Months after his inability to visit murder sites in the troubled Southern Kaduna region of Kaduna state, Governor Mukhtar Yero finally surfaced in the ‘killing field’ today, while angry women protested, naked, against the governor's negligence and poor leadership. An indigene of Sanga local government, residing in the United States, Barrister Sunday Ugah, who is presently in Nigeria, sent our New York office pictures and details of the governor’s visit to Fadan Karshi, where terrorists killed over 40 persons last week. Ugah said all attempts by some prominent politicians to dampen the protest fell on deaf ears as the women said the governor was on a political campaign and not making condolence visits. His e-mail read “It is absolute nonsense that, since March to date, about 1000 people have been killed in Southern Kaduna. [The governor] never came until today, in the name of last week killings, but we all know it is for political reasons. He came in company of hundreds of security personnel. We have no business with his politics, but we will speak in the ballot." “Over 200 were killed in March in Kaura local government, he refused to go there. The same thing happened in June here in Sanga, over 200 were killed. Our parents protested almost naked and we told him he is not a leader but a combination of deceit and lies." “Next month we will take our case to Chatham House in London, where we will address the world of the genocide going on in our villages, and how representatives from the Senate down to state assembly have failed us completely." "We are not docile, we are documenting everything, the senator is only bothered about her re-election like the governor, the same for all the politicians. And the world will hear us, they are killing us like animals and none of them can raise a voice because of vested interests.” http://saharareporters.com/2014/09/22/months-after-murders-kaduna-governor-visits-killing-field-women-naked-protest-poor

SaharaReporters has learned of a simmering tension in Kebbi State between Governor Saidu Nasamu Dakingari and police officers upset about the governor’s assault of his aide de camp, Mohammed Umar, on Saturday, September 9. Several police sources in the state told a correspondent of SaharaReporters that the assault took place at the Ahmadu Bello International Airport in the state capital, Birnin-Kebbi, at a ceremony marking the airlift of pilgrims. They stated that the unruly governor slapped his ADC in the presence of pilgrims and other officials at the ceremony. Governor Saidu Nasamu Dakingari According to all sources, Mr. Dakingari’s ADC had prevented a total stranger who was attempting to pull at the governor’s clothes. Instead of commending his ADC for protecting him, the governor allegedly slapped him, accusing him of over-zealousness in preventing a stranger from meeting him. The ADC is a superintendent of police. Several of the police officers told SaharaReporters that they were dismayed that the governor had not apologized for assaulting and humiliating his ADC. They also accused the Inspector General of Police in Abuja of failing to intervene and demand an apology and restitution for the assaulted officer. The irate officers said they were determined to take to the streets to protest the degrading treatment meted out to one of their own. “The police authorities in Abuja have refused to comment about the issue,” said one of the angry police officers in Kebbi State. http://saharareporters.com/2014/09/19/kebbi-governor-slaps-his-adc-public |

ABUJA – Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Tuesday , directed it members to ignore the 22nd of September, 2014, resumption of primary and secondary schools in Nigeria. National President of NUT, Comrade Micheal Olukoya, gave the directive while briefing journalists in Abuja. He said the teachers should only resume if the Federal Government sufficiently trained and provide them with necessary preventive and protective gadgets on Ebola virus. It would be recalled that the federal government changed the resumption date from September 8, 2014 to October 13, 2014, over the outbreak of Ebola virus in the country. The date was reviewed fom October 13, to September 22, 2014, based on the advice given by Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who said based on the progress made so far that over 98% success has been recorded across the nation. According to Olukoya, “But where the federal government insists on the 22nd September, 2014, date in spite of the wise counsel, the union will rather direct teachers to resume schools whenever they are sufficiently trained and their schools have been provided with the necessary preventive and protective gadgets. For the avoidance of doubt, the teachers have this day, resolved to resume classes in obedience to the federal government directive, in states where teachers have been trained to handle any outbreak and all the required preventive and protective gadgets such as hand gloves, sanitizers, infra-red thermometers, running water and soaps have been provided as directed by federal government of Nigeria. “In states where the training has not been done and necessary safeguarding gadgets not provided, teachers shall continue to remain at home until their state governments respond positively or the union directs them to the contrary”. He noted that the dream of the union is to see all things put in place to protect the teachers and school children from being infected in the school. He said, “The NUT is strongly of the opinion that it is better to delay the resumption of school till 13th October, 2014, even when the scourge would have been off months ago than rush and open schools only to be faced with attacks of EVD in the schools. “It makes more sense to be doubly sure than to operate on shaky grounds of uncertainty and probability as it will be catastrophy of unimaginable dimension if by any act of omission we rush and open schools and end up with even up with even one primary or secondary school being infected by the virus”. The union also threatened to shut down the education sector if the federal government scrap Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN because it is the only regulatory body for the practice of teaching in Nigeria from primary school to the terrtiary institution. “This attempt at scrapping TRCN shows clearly that the federal government does not care about the standard of teachers of Nigeria and the much sought-for professionalism of the teaching industry. “The teachers of Nigeria are watching this development with keen interest with a view to returning to the trenches of 1992 and 1993 as they will not just fold their hands and watch the bastardisation of thei profession”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/ebola-nut-asks-teachers-ignore-sept-22nd-resumption-date/ |

The authorities of Adamawa State University, Mubi, has announced indefinite closure of the institution due to the fear of possible attack from insurgents. This is contained in a statement by Malam Hassan Tanko, Acting Registrar of the institution, in Yola on Sunday. The statement, which directed students to go home, stated that the university was closed indefinitely for security reasons. Meanwhile some students of the university, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone that they were stranded due to residents rush to leave the town. One of the students who identified himself as Ali said many commuters were now stranded in the commercial border town due to lack of vehicle. “Motor park is now jam-packed with stranded passengers with no vehicle to move them out,” Ali said. http://leadership.ng/news/383270/boko-haram-adamawa-varsity-closes-indefinitely |
Families and non-military staff residing in two major military barracks in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, are being evacuated after Islamist insurgents dropped letters announcing their plan to take the most important city in Nigeria’s northeast region. The letters were dropped at the gates of Giwa and Maimalari military barracks as well as different parts of the city of Maiduguri. Several soldiers also told SaharaReporters that some of their colleagues had fled the barracks after the letters were circulated amongst military personnel yesterday. A military officer at Defense Headquarters in Abuja said he was not aware of any desertions. The letter detailing the planned attack on Maiduguri was written in the Hausa language. It specifies that Boko Haram’s unpredictable leader, Abubakar Shekau, planned to personally lead insurgent fighters to attack Maimalari, the more formidable of the two barracks, and to fight to the death as a martyr. “Soldiers are moving their wives and children out because they should not be there if a battle begins,” a security source said. Boko Haram appears emboldened by its success in capturing Bama, the second largest city in Borno State. The Nigerian army and officials of Borno State were so rattled by the insurgents’ seizure of Bama that they claimed for two days that the town remained under Nigerian troops’ control. However, a senior official of the Borno State government told SaharaReporters yesterday that there was no doubt that Bama had fallen to the insurgents. A senior United States official also acknowledged the capture of the town by insurgents, and disclosed that the US would provide logistical assistance to the Nigerian government to help secure Maiduguri. Yesterday, the Islamist terrorists began an apparent push towards Maiduguri by killing some 30 people near Kawuri town. They now have just an army checkpoint in Konduga standing between them and Maiduguri, a city with more than two million residents. http://saharareporters.com/2014/09/05/soldiers-evacuate-families-barracks-boko-haram-drops-fliers-about-plan-seize-maiduguri |

Who is the woman who came on to help Petr Cech? Chelsea first-team doctor Eva Carneiro. Born in Gibraltar to a Spanish father and English mother, Eva studied medicine at Nottingham University before working in emergency surgery in the Highlands. She studied in Australia, did MSc in London and a thesis at West Ham. When did she join Chelsea? After working at the British Olympic Medical Institute, helping athletes at the Beijing Olympics, and with the England Women’s football team. She joined the Blues in 2009 as reserve-team doctor.Andre Villas-Boas brought her into the first-team fold in 2011. How did she get into football? Carneiro fell in love with the game while travelling in Mexico. She watched a match between Mexico and Brazil during the 1998 France World Cup and was hooked. Growing up she loved sport but struggled with injuries. ‘It made me think there had to be more than rest to treatment of injuries and this sparked my evolving fascination with sports medicine,’ she said in 2009. Does she support a team? Real Madrid. Which could get awkward if they and Chelsea both make it to the Champions League final. Anything else we need to know? As a teenager Carneiro enjoyed ballet and riding, she loves to travel — handy, given her line of work — plus salsa and samba. She also likes to surf, something she learnt in Australia. ‘Those moments on the surf in the early mornings and evenings I can honestly count among the happiest in my life,’ she said. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2611480/Meet-Chelsea-physio-Eva-Carneiro-busiest-doctor-football.html

A large chunk of the finances of Boko Haram may be passing through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), an Australian with close links to the militant group has told TheCable. Dr Stephen Davis, who was in Nigeria for four months trying to negotiate with Boko Haram to release the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls, said Boko Haram commanders told him a senior CBN official, who cannot be named by TheCable for legal reasons, was fully involved in the funding of the insurgency. Davis, who spoke with TheCable on phone from Australia in his first interview with a Nigerian journalist, said Western countries could not trace the majority of the source of funding to Boko Haram because “it is done through a legal channel, through the gatekeeper, the CBN, and that makes it very easy to cover up”. He said Boko Haram commanders told him a senior CBN official, who currently works in the bank’s currency operations division, was the one handling the transactions. “One of the biggest of suppliers of arms and military uniforms to the JAS (Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, better known as Boko Haram) currently lives in Cairo, Egypt. He is the recipient of money sent by political sponsors from Nigeria. The funds go through the CBN’s financial system and appear to be a legal transaction. “Meanwhile, the CBN official who handles the funding is an uncle to three of those arrested in connection with the Nyanya bombings. The three boys lived with him. They were arrested by the SSS (Department of State Security) after the bombings but they do not seem to have been interrogated about their uncle in CBN. Or if they have given up information about their uncle then the SSS has not moved against him.” “Also, a senior official of CBN, who recently left the bank, was very close to Sodiq Aminu Ogwuche, the mastermind of the Nyanya bombings who also schooled in Sudan. Boko haram commanders said Ogwuche’s wife used to visit this top official in his office at the headquarters of the bank in Abuja before the Nyanya bombings. They were very close,” Davis said. The former Canon Emeritus at Coventry Cathedral, UK, said he decided to come out to speak now because the Nigerian authorities were not acting fast and he was heart-broken by the evils being done to the kidnapped Chibok girls and the many other girls and boys being kidnapped. “I have three daughters. I just cannot stand the thought of what those girls are passing through. I have spoken to an escapee who described how she was being raped for 40 days by militants. I can’t stand it. It is heart-breaking. Nigerian authorities must act decisively now,” he said, revealing that he spent “days and weeks” with commanders of Boko Haram in the north-east during his time in Nigeria. Davis, 63, holds a PhD in political geography from the University of Melbourne, Australia. http://www.thecable.ng/exclusive-boko-haram-funded-through-cbn |
Even worse is the fact that they cannot prevent the infectious disease. In what has been called an "unprecedented epidemic" with a "worrisome" geographical spread, more and more cases of the deadly Ebola virus are being reported all over the world, especially Africa. However, statistics reveal that women tend to be disproportionately affected by the deadly disease. About 75 percent of people contracting Ebola are females, according to an announcement made by the government of Liberia, the West African country with the highest death toll. Liberia's Ebola cases are rising the fastest. And the depressing reason women are more vulnerable is not even biological, as one would expect. It apparently has its roots in human nature that compels an individual to empathize – to love. In addition, health experts believe that traditional social structures of most West African nations have also contributed to the unfortunate gender-biased susceptibility to the disease. Since women are often the primary care-givers to patients suffering from Ebola, it follows that they are more likely to contract it. Julia Duncan-Cassell, Liberia’s minister for gender and development, told The Washington Post that health teams in Liberia found three-quarters of those who were infected or died from Ebola were female. “Women are the caregivers – if a kid is sick, they say, ‘Go to your mom,'” she said. “The cross-border trade women go to Guinea and Sierra Leone for the weekly markets, [and] they are also the caregivers. Most of the time when there is a death in the family, it’s the woman who prepares the funeral, usually an aunt or older female relative.” Lauren Wolfe from Foreign Policy reiterated the same point while quoting Marpue Spear, the executive director of the Women's NGO Secretariat of Liberia. "If a man is sick, the woman can easily bathe him but the man cannot do so," Spear stated. "Traditionally, women will take care of the men as compared to them taking care of the women." This essentially means the women have no escape. They will not – and simply cannot – deny compassion to their infected family and they also have little chances of receiving any help at all. Maricel Seeger, a WHO spokeswoman in Monrovia, Liberia, said reaching women and educating them on the disease is crucial to tackling the virus’ spread, as they play a major role "as conduits of information in their communities." "By reaching the women, they are reaching those who can best protect their families, and their own health," she said. Although an outbreak started in winter, Ebola took its deadliest turn this month when 28 deaths were reported July 18-20. Overall this year, the current outbreak has killed more than 1,200 and infected about 2,000 people, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak in recorded history. The World Health Organization has described Ebola as “one of the most virulent viral diseases known to humankind.” http://www.carbonated.tv/news/ebola-virus-kills-more-women-government-of-liberia-africa-reveals |
