US comedian Charlie Murphy, the older brother of actor
Eddie Murphy, has sadly died of leukaemia at the age of 57.
Here's a chance to look back at his life and career.
He's known for his Prince and Rick James sketches
Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Story sketches on
Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show in the early 2000s
made him a star in the US.
In the Rick James skit, Murphy recounted how he got to
know the Super Freak singer before James punched him in
the face in Studio 54, leaving a ring imprint on his forehead.
In the Prince sketch, the pop legend challenged Charlie and
his friends to a basketball match after a party - then made
them all pancakes.
Murphy said both incidents really happened.
The brothers had a tricky start in life
Born and raised in New York, Eddie and Charlie's parents -
Lillian and Charles - split up when the boys were little.
Charles was murdered by a girlfriend just a few years later.
Lillian became ill and the brothers spent a short period in
foster care. She then remarried and her husband Vernon
Lynch brought Eddie and Charlie up.
Charlie was a troubled teen
He has talked about experimenting with drugs and having
"tons of fights" . He once found himself with a gun held to
his head in high school after threatening a classmate.
According to his 2009 book The Making of a Stand-Up Guy,
Murphy received three years probation for robbing a driver
at gunpoint, and in the final year of his probation was
arrested for larceny, loitering and other misdemeanours.
He was then sentenced to serve the rest of his probation -
10 months - in county jail.
He was once part of controversial group The Five
Percenters
The group, also known as the Nation of Gods and Earths,
was founded in 1963 by Clarence 13X when he broke from
the Nation Of Islam.
The group says black people are the original people of the
planet earth and that black people are the fathers and
mothers of civilisation.
Murphy explained in a Talk of the Nation interview in 2009
how he removed himself from their influence.
"I would question things. I had an analytical mind back then.
And if you tell me something and profess it to be the truth, I
don't just accept it... because you said it.
"And that's what I felt like when I was part of the
organisation, like, you know, I was being told things, but the
explanation beyond the explanation I was getting was not
good."
He had a varied career
His mother took him to all the armed services recruitment
offices on the day he was released from jail in 1978 and
they all turned him down due to his criminal record.
The Navy eventually agreed to take him after his mother
pleaded: "You gotta take my son or he's going to be killed
out here." He served for six years as a boiler technician.
Before he hit the big time, Charlie was also a screenwriter, a
hip-hop manager and the head of security for his little
brother - but was overprotective of Eddie became hot-
headed when dealing with hecklers.
He later went on to appear in films including Jungle Fever,
Night at the Museum and Lottery Ticket.
He didn't start stand-up until he was 42
He said: "When I first started doing comedy, I was 42 years
old and I was the brother of one of the most celebrated
comics in history who made his name in the game 20 years
earlier.
"So, that took a lot of bravery. It's never been done before.
It's not a part of human reality. It's like, if Michael Jordan
all of a sudden had a big brother who plays basketball and
he's good, too. That does not compute for most people."
Having a famous brother ain't that bad
In a 2009 interview with Essence , Charlie spoke about his
relationship with Eddie.
"I've never felt like I was living in anyone's shadow," Charlie
said. "My life was what it was. I was always proud of my
brother. He helped me tremendously, but we're family so we
were never in his shadow

Sir I don't know if truly you are a VO or just a nickname but what I know is that if someone is going for a conference, he should go with his invitation letter should in case he/she is asked. I feel you comment should be you don't need an invite letter if you going on vacation. Truly those that want to show the VO things without being asked get less believe. It's advisable to go with all documents cus u never know what they will ask for. As for the passport, I have seen where a VO gave back the old passport without even looking at it. Those VO can have good and bad days that's all I see.

In a nutshell, what you are saying is that I should ignore their "document verification" part and just go with ALL my Visa Application documents ready to submit it on my first visit? I would really like that if they can just accept it all at once and let me return to Lagos and wait.

Please do you know anyone who has done it (submission of all documents both for verification and visa application) like this?

I don't tell you to ignore any documents verification oh.. so when you get to the embassy to submit, if one things is missing, you will not be allow to submit.... travel on Sunday night. so on Monday, you can go to the ministry of education and foreign affairs... on Tuesday to the embassy and take night bus back to Lagos...

I got admission MSc. into NOVA IMS. And my resumption is slated for September 2017. I immediately contacted the Portugal Embassy, Abuja and this was their reply:

With reference to your email below, the Consular Section informs that it will first verify your certificate/s. Therefore, you have to stamp the photocopy of the certificate/s and transcript/s at the Federal Ministry of Education before bringing them to the Embassy. Depending on the level of education, the verification process has cost implication.
If the result of the verification is positive, you will be contacted to come to apply for the visa with the following documents:

- a valid passport,
- copy of data page of the passport and any other page with a visa or stamp,
- very clearly completed application form,
- 2 recent coloured passport photos,
- copy of school certificates stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country,
- Police Character certificate stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country,
- letter of acceptance from the school in Portugal,
- evidence of accommodation in Portugal,
- proof of financial capability if you are not on scholarship.

The Police Character Certificate will be translated and authenticated by this Consular Section at the cost of 55 Euros (paid in Naira, according to the exchange rate for the month).

You must apply in person. Consular Section is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9.30a.m. and 12.30p.m. except on Portuguese and Nigerian National holidays.

Please note that if you will require your certificate/s legalised by this Consular Section, the fee is 15 Euros per document (paid in Naira, according to the exchange rate for the month).

Visas are granted or denied by Portugal and this visa has a long processing period, so the Embassy does not keep the passport. When the reply is received from Portugal, the Embassy contacts the applicant.

Almost everything is clear. However, I need clarification from those who have gone through this process. I am based in lagos and my schedule is very tight. For those who have gone through this Student Visa Application Process (especially recently) please share your experiences/advise:

1. How long does this Verification of Certificate/Transcripts By the Embassy take?
2. From whom are they verifying?
3. Is there a way to speed things up (if verification is with my school)?
4. As I am in Lagos, can I send someone to submit the Credentials for me (proxy submission)? What would I need, in addition, to give to the person?
5. Whats the specs for the Passport photo collected at the embassy?
6. I currently do not have accommodation in Portugal, I will only get it when my visa is ready and pay my remaining school fees. This would even probably mean when I get to Portugal. How do I make case for this during Visa Application?
7. For the proof of financial capability, I am not sponsoring myself. Whoever my sponsor is, what is the minimum amount that should be in the Person's Account? Remaining school fees is about 4000 EUROs. Does Block Account apply here?
8. After verification and submission of Visa Application, how long does it take to hear from the embassy?

These and many more are my questions. Please help out in answering them.

you must have a accommodation before you can apply. ask your school to get one for you, if not forget about applying.
