Segun Shitta Bey is comforted by friends after the murder of her son Toyosi on Friday night in Tyrellstown

The parents of a 15-year-old stabbed to death in Tyrrelstown, west Dublin, have condemned his murder as a racially motivated killing as gardaí last night continued to question two brothers in relation to the fatal knife attack.

Toyosi Shitta Bey (15), from Mount Eustace in Tyrrellstown but originally from Nigeria, was fatally stabbed in the heart as he walked through his estate towards home with a group of friends at 8pm on Friday night.

"They killed my son because he was black. God has taken him from me but in my dreams I can see my son," his mother Segun Shitta Bey told the Sunday Tribune. "He never did anything to anyone. All he did was play football, that was his life. Is it a crime that he is black? My life is finished in Ireland. I regret ever coming here."

Toyosi was one of six children and has lived in Ireland since he was five years old with his siblings, his mother, and father Bola Shitta Bey. He was a talented footballer and played for Shelbourne football club under 15s.

Yesterday, at their home in Tyrellstown, his family expressed their anguish and deep sense of loss over the teenager's murder. "Does black mean nothing to some people? Why anyone would hurt my son? This time yesterday he was alive and now we can never be the same again," his mother said.

A senior garda source said they were still trying to establish a motive but they were aware of the allegations of racism. Specialist officers from the Garda Racial and Intercultural Office are assisting local detectives.

Toyosi had been to a local swimming pool in Blanchardstown with friends on Friday evening. Afterwards, he was walking home with his friends in the Mount Eustace estate in Tyrellstown. He was in the company of two other male teenagers originally from Nigeria, two teenage boys originally from the Congo and two Irish teenage girls.

Two Irish brothers, aged 23 and 38, were standing on the street outside their home in The Boulevard, Mount Eustace estate. They were living in Tyrellstown but were originally from Dublin's south inner city. One of the teenage girls asked one of the brothers for a cigarette.

Both men then began to abuse Toyosi and his friends about the colour of their skin and called them "niggers" several times, according to a local source. A brief altercation ensued before Toyosi and his friends walked away.

But the two brothers then went into their house and got a knife. Both men had been drinking, according to a garda source. They then got into their car and drove after the teenagers.

When the men approached the teenagers again, Toyosi, who was known as 'Toy', told his friends not to get involved in a confrontation and to keep walking. But the man armed with the knife stabbed the teenager through the heart.

"It was a racist attack. He was a lovely, happy-go-lucky boy," said Marian Salami, who lives in the same housing estate and knew the teenager well. There is a sizable African community in the middle-class housing estate.

"At first, I was worried it was my brother, he is a good friend of his. Football was his life and he was very popular. His friends are very angry. I have tried to calm them."

Korede Salami, a good friend of Toyosi's who was not present when he was stabbed, said everyone was still in shock. "He always had a smile on his face. He always stuck up for people. I think he was trying to help his friend when he was stabbed," he said.

Religion / Soyinka Wants Orisa Worshippers To Visit Yar’adua by dejiariyo: 12:19pm On Apr 07, 2010
Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has demanded audience with the ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua as a worshipper of Orisa, following recent visits to the presidency by leaders from the nation’s two main religions - Islam and Christianity.

Orisa is a generic name for traditional Yoruba religion.

Mr. Soyinka made this demand yesterday at the Civic Centre, where he delivered a lecture titled ‘Leadership and Followership as shared responsibility’ at an event organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG).

Proper examination

Reacting to the reported visit of religious leaders to Mr. Yar’Adua over the weekend, Mr. Soyinka said “the clerics that have visited him have been very modest in their report. One said he couldn’t speak while another said he heard him grumble, but both agreed he could not use his hand. It is time a committee of Nigerian doctors actually see Yar’Adua and examine that his hand was truly raised and as well examine if the hand can be used properly.”

Mr. Soyinka said there should be no limit to the group of people allowed to see the ailing president.

“There is a kind of insolence going on around the precincts of Aso Rock and, as privileged groups are now allowed to see him, I am going to send an application as a follower of Orisa demanding that Sango worshippers also want to see him now,” he said.

He then alleged that the president is a victim of spousal abuse and referred to him as President “Yar I do or die”.

Leadership with a sign

In his lecture, Mr. Soyinka, defined the leadership in Nigeria in two ways: governmental leadership and civil leadership and he decried both level of leaderships in Nigeria, saying “government leadership in Nigeria is generally with a sigh.”

He also criticised the previously active civil society in the country. He said that, due to lack of leadership, “civil society became unbelievably comatose, and it took a lot too much of slapping just because each of them was looking for leadership.”

He therefore said Nigerians need to boost civil leadership so as to balance the zones of leadership; stating that “it is the civil leadership that has authority, what government leadership has is just power, and only the civil society can hold the government accountable. We need to make that power ludicrous.”

He commended renewed effort, as seen with the campaigns of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG) and Enough is Enough coalitions.

“The SNG is an ecumenical, non-partisan and very-very focused group, which is why I joined them,” he said. “This momentum must not be lost or else we return back to the treachery. People must develop the spirit of inconvenience and boycotting. NEPA would not have reached this deplorable state if the civil society was active. This kind of situation is intolerable. Nigerians are amazing people to have taken this much.”

He urged Nigerians to rally around the new movements, which seem to have found the required leadership. Using a Yoruba adage that says “debating if it is the man or woman that killed the snake is irrelevant, what wants matters is that the snake must be killed,” Mr. Soyinka said “that snake of corrupt or manipulative leadership must be killed.”

Iwu must go

The literary icon again reiterated his call for the removal of the chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Maurice Iwu, calling the INEC boss “a human obstacle to reforming the system.”

Then, reacting to a member of the audience who wondered about the point of voting if one knows that “in an election, my vote will not count”, Mr. Soyinka condemned the level of indolence of the Nigerian citizen, whom he described as “people always blaming the system.”

He called on Nigerians to come out of their shells and fight for the redemption of the country.

“Even when you know that your vote will not count, protecting that vote is part of the shared responsibility otherwise we get into the negative cycle where the other half makes sure you won’t have what you ever want,” he said. “If you rob me, I think it is my responsibility to go after you. It is a simple logical attitude.”

Sam Ohuabunwa, the NESG’s chairperson, affirmed that, with the small population of corrupt leaders, “the massive size of the civil society will swamp the government.”

He identified the problem of civil society as a lack of civil leadership. According to Mr. Ohabunwa, “the challenge today is that the civil society needs to improve their leadership because the more vibrant the civil society, the more accountable the governmental leadership.”

Politics / Try Turai For Kidnapping Yar’adua —soyinka by dejiariyo: 7:49pm On Mar 08, 2010
Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has called for criminal proceedings against Turai Yar’Adua for kidnapping and abusing the ailing President. Soyinka spoke this morning at the International Women’s Day March, organised by Women Arise, a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) coordinated by the National President, Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin. The Nobel laureate said: “From the banners I see you carrying here, some of you will realise that there is spousal abuse. This spousal abuse is not one way, not just men to women, but women to men.

“We have an example with the president of this nation, who is being abused physically by a woman. He has been kidnapped by a woman (Turai) under false imprisonment.

“If it were in a civilized society, this woman should be in court by now for kidnapping and false imprisonment,” he stated.

According to Soyinka, “worse than abusing her spouse, Turai is also abusing a nation; abusing and insulting the intelligence of a nation.

“Release this man so that he can speak to the nation about his condition, release him, stop insulting and belittling his family. Even his mother was not allowed to see him.

“For me, this act is sacrilege, acute sacrilege and I think we should begin criminal proceedings against Turai for kidnapping and false imprisonment of her husband,” he said.

On the Jos crisis, Soyinka said the Federal Government and security agents should be held responsible for not being vigilant enough to nip the crisis in the bud.

He lamented that the presidency and the security agents went to sleep while some unscrupulous elements maimed and killed innocent victims.

Soyinka added that instead of pro-active measures to have been put in place to curb the crisis once and for all, the nation’s legislature was busy exchanging Ghana-must-go bags.

He urged the women to protest against this unwarranted crisis as women and children were the most affected. He said they should also agitate for a good electoral system.

Convener of the rally, Okei-Odumakin, said Turai had indeed defamed women by her unbecoming act.

“As a woman, she is supposed to be the mother of the nation. She should let Nigerians know the state of health of the President.

“It is sad and pathetic that she should act this way. A woman is supposed to stand for truth, justice and others,” she stated.

At the rally, Okei-Odumakin said it was sad to know that there were still lots of abuses and discrimination against women in Nigeria, ranging from poor working conditions, battering and genital mutilation among others.

“Our march today is part of our collective efforts as women to demand our rights and to also call for the abolition of all forms of discrimination and violence against women.

“We demand the implementation of national policy on women, abolish all cultural practices that offend the civil liberties of women, pay maternity leave, encourage women to participate in politics and provide better work conditions for women, just like their male counterparts,” she said.

Founder, Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, said something must be done urgently to salvage the nation from criminals in Aso Rock.

“We may be few, but we are in the majority. It is only a matter of time. We behave like monkeys, when they dangle banana before us not knowing that the whole banana plantation belongs to us.

“All forms of abuse of women or men must stop. Women are the hands that rock the cradle. Our march should be for electoral reform,” he stated.

According to Professor Pat Utomi, the nation is not working because of lack of accountability.

He added that “the future of our children is being taken away by those who think of themselves only.”

viaro:

I didn't call you any names. Your assumptions are patently wrong, for Islam and Christianity are not the same. Ask those who are informed Muslims and Christians, and they'll tell you what you need to know.

'Father' is not only mentioned when Christians are thinking only in terms of the Trinity. There are Christian groups that deny both the Deity of Christ and the Biblical teaching of the Trinity - yet these Christian groups also refer to God as 'Father'. Besides, in the Jewish scriptures you find God also being referred to as "Father" (Deut. 32:6 and Isaiah 63:16). Yet, not in one instance would you find Allah in Islam being called "Father".

There may be some identical features in many religions; but these features do not make these religions "the same" in what you are trying to argue.

I still find it hard to believe, Where in my post did i say they are the same thing, i said categorically they both came from the same source.

I dont need nobody to tell me what i know cos am not like every Christians and Muslims who regurgitates,I studied Religion as a degree for good 3 years at the  University of Victoria, Canada, so what do u want anyone to tell me that i havent come across?

It means a whole lot especially when you make such obviously empty statements in a public forum. I wonder that you who go out to call others to knowledge are the same person who has not demonstrated that you have any knowledge of what you want to assert. You sould learn to appreciate the distinctions between worldviews rather than lumping them altogether for your own ideas.

Still finding it hard to get what ur point is, if u have any evidence to disagree with my post, pls do it instead of calling me names.

All i know is,When Christians call Father they mean God, Father comes in when they wanna use the trinity theory.

Or do i need to quote verses to buttress my point?

Religion / Islam And Christianity Are Both The Same. by dejiariyo: 7:35am On Mar 02, 2010
I think Africans need to know that Islam and Christanity are actually from the same source and have same view, and  must now admit they are from the same source.

I am not here to bash no religion but i am here to enlighten Africans or the ones that dont even know what their religion is all about.I think this two religions were the same and had same agenda,  the Problem started when some Isrealite were planning to take over the world including Palestine, The problem still happens till date (Isreal palestine  war)

Africans shud ask themselves why they have churches and mosques in the same building in isreal, and the pple who inherit the religion cant live in peace?I think both religion fell out cos of selfish and obvious reason, how to share the loots taking from the captured Nations.Africans need to do more research on what they are practising or worshipping instead of regurgitating the same old thing they being fed.Even The Bible and Quran said you shud know God Before you worship him, that includes travelling to this places and see if what they sold to you is actually what it is.

Now let break it down, i recently went to some countries just to know some truths about this religions,my sojourn took me to places like Isreal,Dubai,Ethiopia and Egypt, the most shocking thing i experienced was in Isreal, Isrealies are not as Religious as Nigerians and one of my Isrealies friend confessed to me that Isreal is not as holy as i think , its just a propanganda just to make them untouchable in the world, that is why they cant question them on Nuclear Weapon, which everybody know they do have.

My point is, why cant Nigerians go to these places and see things for themselves if what they wrote in the bible is true orfalse, like i discovered that egypt was mentioned in the bible and there was never a mention of the World black pple or at least negro that were taken as slaves then wen its known there were black pple in egypt at the time of Jesus the christ and i think the bible had 2 versions so as to satisfy the selfish interest of the pple who wrote it Or what did God forget  in the first version that he remembered in the second one?

Verses like thou shall not kill are not even read Isreal, cos Isreal govt went as far as Dubai to assasinate a human being and you can see their massacre in Gazza, but they wont be questioned cos they wrote the bible.

pls and pls i beg you all Nigerians shud go out there and seek knowledge,so u dont regret it and the end of the day, i have over 200 evidence to buttress my point that this 2 religion comes from the same pple, they fell out like the buccaneer fell out from pirate confraternity but we know they share the same ideology and beliefs, just that they twist them cos of the selfish reasons.

e.g They both have the lord prayers, Just that the Muslims call it suratu fathia, but its still same thing.

The Fateha [The Opening]

The Qur'an 1:1-7

The Lord's Prayer

Matthew 6:9-13
[The New Testament, King James version]

Will end this post by the word of my Isreali friend, We sent missionaries to Africa so that Africans can get to Heaven but we wont allow Africans in our countries.

N banging

Na local champion these guys wan be til their career finish?

With this type of questions, The thinking level of posters on Nairaland just being put into question.

1)Modenine video badman has being on mtv since 08 and when i was in nigeria last year i saw the video with cashino videos, which i know modenine must have given it to them.

2)You didnt know teeto was in the video, well  its might be the same reason you havent being seeing modenine video on MTv, they must have being playing it and u thought you was watching Dbanj gbono feli feli.

3)U said its would take modenine new video 2 good years to get to Mtv,  why u asking if its There, its not up to 2 years, Dont worry its on its way to Mtv from modenine pc all the way to Southafrica via seme boder

4)Again sample video is on Mtv, Its not NigeriaTv, they play other african songs on there as well, so u cant expect to be seeing A rap song from Nigeria 24/7.

5)What is your definition Of International champion?, Getting your song played  on Mtv??
