Religion / Wealthy Nigerians, Pastors Waste $225 Million On Private Jets-- Forbes by dejiariyo1: 1:50am On May 19, 2011 |
A few wealthy Nigerians spent at least $225 million acquiring private jets between March 2010 and March 2011, a Nigerian newspaper reported on Monday. According to the report published by the Punch Newspaper, a couple of the acquisitions were made by billionaires Aliko Dangote and Mike Adenuga. Last year, Dangote acquired a US$45 million Bombardier jet as a gift to himself on his 53rd birthday, while Mike Adenuga purchased a Bombardier Global Express XRS. Both Dangote and Adenuga own at least two private planes each. Apart from wealthy business tycoons, Nigerian clergymen and spiritual leaders are also joining the very elite league of jet owners. In March this year, David Oyedepo, a Nigerian cleric generally believed to be Africa’s wealthiest gospel preacher, acquired a Gulfstream V jet for US$30 million. Oyedepo, who presides over the Winners Chapel, one of Africa’s largest churches, now owns a private collection of four aircraft. In addition to his latest acquisition, he previously owned two Gulfstream planes and a Bombardier Challenger Aircraft. He is also reportedly creating a private hanger to accommodate his flying toys. Oyedepo is not the only Nigerian clergyman to own a jet. Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the revered overseer of Nigeria’s largest congregation, The Redeemed Christian Church of God, is also a proud jet owner. In March 2009, the great man of God spent $30 million on a Gulfstream jet amidst widespread criticism. Pastor Sam Adeyemi, another cleric and founder of the Daystar Christian center, a flourishing Pentecostal congregation which repeatedly preaches financial prosperity, is also a jet owner. It’s not cheap to own a private jet. On average, it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to maintain a personal plane. The majority of Nigerians frown at such flagrant displays of opulence, particularly on the path of their clergymen, given that 60% of Nigerians still live below the poverty line. Paradoxically, the same people who complain about the extravagant lifestyles of their spiritual leaders are the same ones who finance it. Every Sunday, swarms of worshipers rush to the church to give away their hard-earned money to the pastors’ coffers in the form of tithes, offerings and special gifts with the deluded hope of multiplied financial blessings in return. For many, this is but a pipe dream. Deep down, the pastors smile; they’ve got just the perfect suckers. http://blogs.forbes.com/mfonobongnsehe/2011/05/17/wealthy-nigerians-pastors-spend-225-million-on-private-jets/ |

Aboru Aboye o, Ifa agbe wa o Alagbede7: The correct quote is from Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa “When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said, 'Let us pray.' We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land.” People lets keep liberating our fellow Africans home and Abroad, Unity is what we need to eradicate what the Imperialist have done to Africans, Bless 1 Like |

Before the Unrest in Libya caused by the Islam extremist , Libya was one of the best country in Africa when its comes to GDP Only Libya will deport black Africans and give them 2,500 dollars. Only Gaddafi supported the project of Kwame Nkrumah and Marcus Garvey United States of Africa and which Obasanjo,The Arabs and the White house were against. Only Gaddafi opposed the Arab Nation exploiting the black Africans and its sad the black Africans are the ones against him now and now supporting the Islam extremist aka the Rebels , SMH Gaddafi is the only head of state that supported the Black civil rights movement in America monetarily. The same islam extemist gaddafi is reported killing are the same people killing the blacks in Libya, You people should seek caution Gaddafi did not become a dictator over night, This is another case of Kwame Nkrumah and Thomas Sankara two of the best leaders that were outed by the imperialist. |

justwise: I guess you dont really know nothing about the situation in Libya and all your judgment is based on the only side you get to see on TV anyway bless you. But remember 44 people killed in just 3hours of invasion, i guess we should be looking at thousands death before the end of the month. I said it earlier its a loose loose situation for people of Libya after they get killed they loose their Oil to the Imperialist again, |

justwise: I laugh at comments like this, in 3 hrs of the invasion 44 pple have already lost their lives, when you want to bring peace to a nation you dont go there with missiles and war planes cause the civilians will be the ones to die, Iraq is an example , so this is a loose loose situation for the people of Libya. my fear of such military intervention is who are u bombing? aerial bombing is not precise, how do u identify supporters or rebels? |

justwise: Take it easy bro, You cant say all what i typed earlier is rubbish, You can tell me its coincidence that 53 African countries cant get things right, Fela knew what was going on and that was why he did the song "Basket Mouth" where he dissed the United Nation, The Imperialist Nations are the one who put most of this dictators into power e.g Mumbarak but you only see their wrath when you go against them, Do you remember the 1986 libya bombing where Gaddafi's daughter was killed during the bombing? common Gaddafi did not become a dictator two weeks ago. I am not supporting Gaddafi but where is Blair and Bush the two warlords that invaded Iraq ilegally even against the will of the UNITED NATIONS? |

I think you lots need to off your Tell-a-lie-Vision, America/France/UK are the ones supplying the middle east the weapons they are using in the first place, They are their for business purpose, Don't get it twisted they left Rwandans to die, Where were they when Omar Bashir was killing over 2Million Black Africans in their own country? This is a war they need to create with the help of the media, the economy is bursted already so they need war to make money and if you dint know how that is possible then you should ask yourself why a bank like Barclays bank manufacture weapons. Its a loose loose situation for the people of Libya. We should all seek caution, this was the lies they told us all before they overthrown kwame nkrumah, history is repeating itself here, the french killed one of the best leader Africa could ever produce in Thomas Sankara. Dont ever believe anything untill its officially denied History we judge us all, Bless scholars |

The west supports "dictators" when it suits them & as soon as power comes into play, they storm in and condemn their practices, Libya's tear gas is made in UK,Mirage F1 planes made in France & Herc planes made in US. US/UK/FRANCE will never invade Zimbabwe even though they said Mugabe is the worst president in Africa, cos apparently Zimbabwe got no oil |
Politics / Opinion: What We Have Learnt About Buhari by dejiariyo1: 1:18am On Mar 19, 2011 |
What have we learnt about Buhari Buhari has held numerous juicy offices, but he has not enriched himself corruptly Buhari has a passion for Nigeria Buhari knows the odds against him, but that has not detered him because he is banking only on the fact that Nigerians will decide this time around if they are fed up with the PDP or not. Buhari is not someone who strives to be politically correct – otherwise, he would have joined the ACN or pick a traditional politician rather than an activist pastor as his running mate Buhari recognises deputies – just like Bakare is a relevant figure in his campaign today, we can remember how Tunde Idiagbon was a relevant figure in his government Buhari is a victim of his love for Nigeria – Sanusi Lamido Sanusi Buhari focuses on priorities of his office and not side attractions; as NNPC and Ministry of Petroleum Boss, he built refineries; as Head of State, he worked vigorously to kill corruption – a reason why he took power; as PTF Chairman, he made sure Abacha did not intefere to deter him from delivering results Buhari is not a candidate of the northern elites; unlike the Atikus and IBBs of this world, Buhari’s support is with the northern commoners, not the elites Buhari is not an apostle of do-or-die; this was the infamous Obasanjo declaration. Contrary to popular critics, Buhari never asked riggers to be lynched – he only asked voters not to allow their votes to be stolen. He didn’t say how. Buhari was head of state who combated religious extremism; in 1984, he successfully quenched the Maitatsine in the north; unlike the PDP failure to quench Boko Haram; this is a teatament to the fact that Buhari can address the security situation in this country better thanthe PDP. Buhari has NEVER advocated for Sharia in all of Nigeria; he only acknowledge that Sharia is a part of the consitution and he even mentioned that in difficult circumstances, the civil court always overide Sharia which is a legal and constitutional fact Buhari does not have a godfather or godmother – all he wants is to serve Nigerians – ONLY if they allow him. Buhari believes in the rule of law; when he was rigged out of past elections, he went to court for a record 50months. In 2011, he has said, he is not going to court again as this is the last time he will contest Nigerian election. Asking for Buhari is not because we see him as the ONLY one or a perfect man. No. But among the other aspirants, he is the only one that can break us from the shackles of the past. GEJ will only continue the status quo and antics of the PDP. GEJ has so far been playing safe with the elites and let’s be honest, he will continue to do so given another four years. So, he will continue celebrating Bode George, consulting OBJ and IBB and allowing every unholy practises of government to continue. Forget the usual story of his poor background. Have we forgotten that even Obasanjo and MKO Abiola had poor backgrounds? Actually, Ribadu happens to be my second choice; he would have been first (given Buhari’s age), but, I do not know how Ribadu intends to break free from Tinubu’s influence. Also, I cannot honestly judge his anti-corruption criteria, because when he succeeded in EFCC, we know that he had the backing of Obasanjo. What happens when he suddenly have the charge to himself? He may choose to save his own neck rather than offend any elite for Nigeria. I will end this note by quoting the man Buhari himself; Nigerians are fed up with the indiscipline and the corruption of governance, and this is our greatest hope against next year’s elections – that they need change. They need a serious team to be in charge of the country - Buhari in September 1,2010 interview on NVS - http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/nvs/politicians-would-be-the-first-victims-of-sharia-if-properly-implemented-buhari.html For Sanusi Lamido Sanusi article on Buharism, go to http://www.facebook.com/notes/ayodeji-daniel-abiola/buharism-economic-theory-and-political-economy/10150132340575189 The views held in this piece are those of the author alone and not of CP-Africa. Funny enough Nigerians are full of hypocrisy , Tell me if pple like royce da 5'9, joe budden havent done worst than he did? He just gave you an option if you dont like him just ignore him and do your own thing, going as far as his twitter page and facebook to diss him shows you a coward. I have heard rappers who ustream and address their haters but cos its modenine addressing haters who took time out of their non existence life to diss him has suddenly become a crime? If i were you i would say whatever i want to his face then that makes u real man and not internet Gangster. I dont follow pple i dont like on twitter so we dont have a clash, i choose pple who i follow which is fair, Dude said dont follow him if you dont like him but its funny its modenine haters who will bring out videos like this, i guess ulterior motives , if you dont like him just unfollow that way there wont be no clash. And wassup with the title of the video , its does not even relate to what is in the video>? i guess just to bring pple in here, we all know its only modenine threads that makes the music section on Nairaland , no modenine thread =boring music section. And how did this make the homepage ? he only mentioned nairaland once and other blogs as well but i guess you lots wanna achieve something by putting it on the homepage, anyway Gudluck Dodo is for , |
