KUNLÉ ADEYEMI
FOUNDER | PRINCIPAL

NLÉ is led by Kunlé Adeyemi, an architect, designer and ‘urbanist’ with a track record of conceiving and completing high profile, high quality projects internationally. His recent work includes ‘Makoko Floating School’, an innovative, prototype, floating structure located on the lagoon heart of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos. This acclaimed project is part of an extensive research project – ‘African Water Cities’. NLÉ is currently developing a number of urban, research and architectural projects in Africa; one of which is Chicoco Radio Media Center; the amphibious building in Delta city of Port Harcourt in Nigeria.

Born and raised in Nigeria, Adeyemi studied architecture at the University of Lagos where he began his early practice, before joining the world renowned Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in 2002. At OMA, working closely with founder Rem Koolhaas for nearly a decade, he led the design, development and execution of numerous projects in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Among these projects were the award winning Samsung Museum of Art, the Seoul National University Museum, NM Rothschild Bank in London, Shenzhen Stock Exchange tower in China, Prada Transformer in South Korea, Qatar National Library, Qatar Foundation Headquarters and the 4th Mainland Bridge and master plan in Lagos. Adeyemi was responsible for critical stages in design and realization of these projects. This involved leading OMA’s design team, coordinating a diverse global network of stakeholders and experts collaborators, including Arup for Engineering and Davis Langdon (AECOM) on cost matters.

Academic work
Kunlé Adeyemi is 2014 Baird Distinguished Visiting Critic of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, teaching and researching ‘Water & The City’. Previously he was the 2011 Callison Distinguished Visiting Lecturer of the University of Washington, teaching and researching ‘The Modern City in the Age of Globalization’ in Chandigarh – India’s first planned modern city. His main area of academic interest is in developing cities of the global south. He has pursued and developed this issue via a number of research papers and study opportunities. They include a post-professional degree from Princeton University in the US, where with Peter Eisenman he investigated rapid urbanization and the role of market economies in developing cities of the global South, focusing on Lagos.
His hypothesis ‘Urban Crawl’ published in the Log Journal, is a critical exposé on architecture and urbanism in emerging megacities of the global south, which also unravels the complex urban conditions and operative mechanisms of such cities.
His knowledge and opinions in this area are much sought after. Consequently, he has acted as a speaker and visiting critic at prestigious institutions such as the Guggenheim New York, Harvard University, MIT, the Cooper Union, the School of Oriental and African Studies, the Architectural Association in London, ETH in Zurich, Chandigarh College of Architecture in India and Delft Technical University in the Netherlands.

Towards Africa
All of Kunlé Adeyemi’s experience, knowledge and background underpin his new architectural, creative design, and urbanism practice for Africa and other developing regions. The overarching aim of the practice is to bridge critical gaps in infrastructure and urban development by creating coherent networks and global exchanges that work for people. The scope of the practice is not limited to architecture. He has also designed furniture, among many other things, and explores all social and cultural possibilities that contribute to urbanism.

Adeyemi is currently one of 5 members of the International Advisory Council for the World Design Capital 2014 being hosted by Cape Town, South Africa. This International design event is an opportunity to identify, nurture and promote projects that offer tangible evidence of how design can improve lives, within the uniquely South African and African context. In 2010, Adeyemi was the creative director for Lagos Photo – Nigeria’s first contemporary public photography exhibition with the African Artist’s Foundation. Lagos Photo is an urban intervention aimed to inspire and enlighten people about Lagos and other African cities, through photography in public spaces. His article ‘The Architecture of Photography’ was published in the Lagos Photo 2010 catalogue. Fundamental to his vision for developing cities is the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge & Master Plan in Lagos state – with OMA for Missing Link Motorway Development Company. A project, which has the potential to positively transform daily life for millions of people in one of the world’s most populous and challenging cities.

“Whether a chair for charity in South Africa, a revolutionary rotating art space for Prada in Seoul or the visionary plan to eliminate traffic paralysis in Lagos with the 4th Mainland Bridge, in each project the essential needs of performance, value and identity – critical for success – are fundamentally the same for me. Although quantitatively different from place to place, the responsibility of achieving these needs at maximum, with minimum means, remains the same globally. I am constantly inspired by solutions we discover in everyday life in the world’s developing cities” — Kunlé Adeyemi, 2010

Fifthcolumnist:
If you had been to states like Akwa ibom and rivers some 12 years ago before the 13% derivation was passed you'd appreciate the impact of that law. Forget all that talk about the Niger Delta and corruption; there's worse corruption in Abuja and the north and even among SW states. The Niger Delta has improved rapidly in the last 10 yrs. But if you're expecting it to be like Dubai for a 13% that hardly amounts to 4 or 5bn a month then you're funny.

Even Abuja that has been built already still has nearly the largest monthly allocation in Nigeria. The NDDC is a sham. What is needed in Nigeria for the better is fiscal federalism else we'd keep on buying drugs to cure the ailment instead of addressing the problem that caused them in the first place.

What are you talking about? You must really think I'm a foreigner and not a Nigeria with detailed knowledge about my own country.

And besides from when oil was discovered in the Niger Delta till 2000 despite the peace there was no development of sorts at all and expect the People not to get restive? The rotten tooth has to pulled out first before the mouth can chew in peace
What exactly is in Akwa Ibom and what have they done within the last 10 years?

Akpabio with just 5 million people to manage posted more state budgets than Lagos state and the largest in the history of state budgets in Nigeria and apart from 1 fly over and a few roads, he commissioned less than 4 projects so please tell us where the money went.

1 Hospital

1 football field

1 library

That's all.

He budgeted billions for Ibaka seaport, but ordinary road clearing or fencing wasn't done

Tropicana consumed tens of billions, but only 1 cinema was delivered.

What was done in Delta state? Nothing, I mean nothing, unless you have some invisible projects to share with us. To date, Delta state owes more money than Lagos state, but nothing to show.

What was done in Bayelsa? Nothing. Alams stole all the money and GEJ did not build 1 single classroom

Rivers did better because Amechi was a good manager.

Sam Edem, chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission, is accused of stealing a total of £3.4 million in public money to pay a witchdoctor to cast "juju" spells to secure business contracts and to kill a powerful rival at work.
Part of the black magic reportedly involved Mr Edem burning £1.2 million in cash and then smearing the ashes over his naked body in a cemetery in the middle of the night in a "fortification" ritual

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/nigeria/2597126/Nigerian-burns-1.2m-in-bizarre-ritual.html
Son of the soil looted billions to spend on Juju.

This will be my last reply on this. Granted there was a mix up, why I showed you two other cases of company known as zebra is to let you understand where the mix up is coming but you choose to be afonja.
Orjiakor is also chairman of Zebbra Energy Limited which owns the deepwater concession OPL 248 offshore Nigeria.
I ran a search on it and the zebra you are making noise up and down popped out. I didn't look at it twice, because I have many things to post. But you choose to be stuuupid. Even when there are two companies bearing this name all from Igbos, you still did not make use of your brain...

Founder of Ibis Hotel, Ikeja, Otunba Olufemi Okenla

Founder of Ibis Hotel, Ikeja, Otunba Olufemi Okenla, unveils his autobiography, ‘Power of Thought’, to mark his 50th birthday.

When you look at a king’s royal mouth, you would think he never sucked his mother’s breast. This is one of the evergreen sayings from Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe’s novel that will ever remain classical.
This proverb very much applies to the life of the founder and Managing Director of Hotel Ibis, Ikeja, Lagos, Chief Olufemi Okenla. Many people will, for instance, think that the man who radiates much financial contentment must have been in affluence all his life.

But Okenlan, who relocated to Nigeria after spending 25 years in the UK, has a lot of tales to tell. When he was studying abroad, for instance, he was once a sawmill attendant in London. When he later worked in a hotel, scrubbing floor and doing other menial jobs, the experience was so cumbersome that he was soon hit by a life-threatening fever.
Okenla was thus compelled to change the job. So ‘lucky’ was he that he was employed as a kitchen ‘manager’ when he had to work with an automatic dish machine, filling dishes into the system. He was of the opinion that the job was more elevating than scrubbing the floor. But that was until the new job also brought a dramatic hazard in the form of a nightmare. In his sleep, he began to see nothing but dishes rolling on the washing machine, thus graduating from the frying pan into the fire.
These are some of the stories Okenla narrates in The Power of Thought: A Compendium of my Life in Half a Century, his autobiography presented in Lagos on Monday. The book marks his 50th birthday, which was celebrated on Tuesday. It captures the writer’s journey from a struggling guy to a successful entrepreneur.
For Okenla, being 50 presents an auspicious time to open the pages of his life for people – especially youths – to read. According to him, his life is a shining evidence that whoever believes in the power of his or her dream and thought is destined for success.
The public presentation, which featured readings from the book, music and comedy by Lagos-based comedian, Kofi, who was the master of ceremonies, was held at the hotel, with several dignitaries in attendance. These included the Group Managing Director of Skye Bank, Mr. Timothy Oguntayo, who was the chairman, Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Sadiat Oladunjoye; lawyer and politician, Dr. Muiz Banire, and the Managing Director of Opas Ltd., Mr. Muyiwa Green. The host’s wife, Modupe was also present.
In his review of the book, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Dr. Dayo Amokaye, commended Okenla for publishing the work which, he believes, will positively affect posterity.
Amokaye said, “The book is motivational and inspiring. It is an invaluable asset to the younger generation and adults that want to be motivated.”
Okenla explained that it took him some time to write the book but that he is very happy to see it out as he believes every reader has a lot to learn from it. He intends to give proceeds to the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos and the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria. The reason for this is that it was the hospital that healed him when he had an accident that affected his spine.
He said, “When some people read this book, they will think it is a fiction. But it is not. It is the truth of what has happened to me. I am a living example. If you can think it and dream it, you can get it. What we believe in is what we are. It is what we become. My philosophy is, ‘Nothing is impossible’. Everything in life is affordable and achievable once we get our priorities right. But many people spend time on what is urgent, not what is important or vital.
“Never give up. Hold on to your dreams. Be patient. Be calm and don’t be afraid of tall dreams.”
The commissioner, who unveiled the book, described the author as a successful entrepreneur and pathfinder per excellence.
She added, “He is a motivator and someone who believes in dignity of labour

Your business should be to your immediate constituency. For example, i have n business how Kaduna chooses to spend their money just like you and i have no business how the Niger Delta chose to spend theirs.
Again, I'm a Nigerian and Nigeria is my constituency and everything in Nigeria is my business.

The fact that you don't care about Kaduna doesn't mean well-meaning Nigerians shouldn't give a damn about their fellow countrymen or the fact that you have zero moral concern about the same people you pretend to care about doesn't mean other people shouldn't.

Your moral compass is very detrimental to the people of the delta.

What's your business on how people choose to spend their own money. If they decide to use it for toilet paper, how the hell is it your business. What you self righteous people don't understand that we understand all these your tactics of telling us, what about the 13% this, NDDC that. it's the resource of the Niger Delta ad it's their prerogative to decide whether they want to squander it or not. it's not in your place to ask questions. You're a parasite just like all of us that are not from there. Heard?
I'm a Nigerian and the Delta is part of Nigeria so it's my freeking business and it should be yours too even though I do understand that you favor and excuse crooked, corrupt and incompetent leaders regardless the damage they do to their people. .

Whose aim s it to resolve issues? The ND says we want to controll our resources and pay tax to the federal government, the government says no. They say that oil companies should up their social responsibility ability, the oil company goes ahead to bribe government officials and everything is swept under the carpet. The little money that gets to the community are shared by chiefs and elders and you wonder why able bodied men go about bombing pipelines. My brother, don't worry, one day a company will come to your village and rape everything in sight, that day i will tell you to resolve issues with them. English is always easy when you're not at the receiving end of grave injustices.
You really should be telling us what happened to all the 13% derivations, IGR, budgets, NDDC and ministry of Niger delta affairs and also Alams, Ibori and the other leaders in that region looting every kobo in sight.

The has nothing to do with resources control, it's all about bad, crooked and corrupt leadership in that region.

Even with resources control, are the leaders in that region going to repent, stop looting and deliver on behalf of their own people and if they don't, is it not going to be bombing and blowing up oil installations all over again?

You know the problem so why keep pointing fingers elsewhere?
