Abioye Samson Damilare CEO/Co-founder, Pass.ng

Enterprise54 was able to track down Samson Abioye, (CEO and one of the co-founders) to discuss the progress they’ve made so far.

So, Pass.ng is now on WeChat. Apart from the increased accessibility it offers, (WeChat users can now take the tests from inside the app) how else does this benefit Pass.ng? Doesn’t that increase your workload a bit?

This comes with increased visibility and distribution for our product. You may have noticed our ads on BRT buses, radio and some TVC. For a startup like ours, getting our brand out there is really helpful. Well of course it does increase our workload. You can imagine building an app on top of an already existing platform. We had to understand WeChat development pre-requisite and some other connections to different API. Overall, it was fun achieving those goals as we didn’t see it as being burdensome because we began with the end in mind. The Pass.ng-WeChat partnership has afforded more students to use our product.

I like the fact that you can compare your scores with the scores of other students on the site. Which makes me curious. How do you decide what features to add/include in the app/service? Is there a democratic process or it’s your call eventually?

We are close to our users. Sometimes we have an event, called UX (user experience) in-house. There we study our users, see how they use our products and come up with features that matter most to them. Also we have a brilliant and energetic team with whom we brainstorm after interacting with our users.

Pass.ng looks like a programming intensive platform. How much did your programming background help with the success of the platform? Do you think this would be possible for someone without that technical knowhow?

I can’t rule out the mileage we got from being tech co-founders. I, Adebagbo Joshua, Abayomi Akanji and Imole Oluyemi studied computer science and engineering in university Ladoke Akintola University of Technology where we learnt programming and software development. On a couple of occasions, we represented our university in both local and international events. The thing about running a tech-startup business is that you’ve got to iterate a lot until you find the right product-market fit. Having a good knowledge of tools to use and the technical know-how is extremely essential as you can extend your run time, iterate, measure feedback and improve the product.

Founder & Managing Partner @microtraction

Microtraction launches to invest in early-stage Nigerian startups with technical founders

For nearly a year, former country manager of Starta, Yele Badamosi has worked tirelessly behind the curtain on a new product. Microtraction, as he fondly calls this new venture, is on the verge of solving one major problem for early-stage startups in Nigeria.

Launching officially today, Microtraction looks to invest early in the most remarkable technical founders as well as provide support to build world-class startups.

With this in mind, Microtraction commits $65,000 at two different stages to the recipient startups — an initial tranche of $15,000 for 7.5% equity stake, followed by an extra $50,000 (convertible note) at a $1 million valuation cap for companies that show significant progress.

“We are focused on getting you money from your first application and working to make sure the entire process does not exceed 60 days,” he says.

Co-Founder and CEO of BudgIT.

https://techpoint.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/budgit-37-of-99.jpg

A Co-Creation Hub Hackathon set the stage for public finance analyst, Oluseun Onigbinde, to launch one of the best ideas that Nigeria has seen in some time – BudgIT. Because of BudgIT, Nigerians now have access to federal budgets while they are being drawn up.

BudgIT uses SMS, infographics, interactive applications and games, amongst other tools, to bring transparency and accountability to civil society while aiming for a more socially and economically evolved Nigeria. According to Oluseun, BudgIT simply aims to provide budget access, which both he and his team believe is the key to civic engagement and institutional reform.

Oluseun is presently working on international partnership to advance BudgIT’s vision. The Africa Transparency Initiative, a Pan-African initiative, USAID, Ford Foundation, and the Knight Foundation are some of the partners that the company has managed to make progress with over time. Additionally, BudgIT has developed tools such as ‘Tracka’ and ‘Fitila’ to monitor local community projects.

The idea is that rather than having reports just being entirely narrative, we want them to be backed by data. We don’t want 1000-word opinion pieces not backed with data guiding the thoughts.
BudgIT currently employs 22 people and has future plans to build “sustainable cities” that are data-driven. To do this, Oluseun is ready to “pull the old order down and rebuild a new experience for stakeholders” while strengthening access to citizens in digital and offline communities.

“We want to publicise finance data in the hands of citizens, raising their ability to ask questions and demand service delivery. But we don’t want to do this with heavy dependence on donor funding, so we want to ensure that we fully establish a thriving business segment that focuses on private clients and development agencies in areas of data science, visualization and civic technology.”

Ms. Adeniran studied Russian Language at the University of Lagos, along with minors in the Italian, Yoruba and English Languages.

However, she was always passionate about teaching her language (Yoruba) to others while also learning to speak theirs. She is fluent in English, Yoruba and Russian, can speak some Italian and is currently learning to speak Portuguese

In the future NAILANGS hopes to incorporate language translation as one of its features.

Good work, sir. It would be nice to add a little historical perspective to this. Bashorun J.K Randle is the son of Joseph Kosoniola Randle MVO MBE, (1909 - 1956) who was a Nigerian businessman and socialite from Lagos.

He was Chief de Mission of the Nigerian Olympic team to Melbourne, and was connected to various public activities in Lagos. Randle was a social crusader and philanthropist, who started the Nigerian arm of the Anti-Tuberculosis Society, a member of the Lagos Town Council but his politics discouraged extreme nationalism and was a sportsman who was a trustee of a proposed National Stadium.

He held the title of Lisa of Lagos given to him by Oba Adeniji Adele. Randle was a founding member and later Chairman of the Island Club. He was also a sports enthusiast, vice president of the Nigerian Olympic Federation, as well as the British Empire and Commonwealth Games Association and a trustee of the proposed National Stadium. Before his death, he built the J.K Randle Memorial Hall at Onikan, and opened it up to the public. Sadly, that historical building was demolished last year, by unknown people who claimed to be acting on the orders of the state govt.
You can not write the History of Lagos state without mentioning the Randle Family.

EXECUTIVE Director, Springfountain Infrastructure Ltd, Mrs. Tokunbo Fagbemi

EXECUTIVE Director, Springfountain Infrastructure Ltd, Mrs. Tokunbo Fagbemi has revealed plans that the company intends to provide 200 aircraft in 20 years for the teeming flying population of the country with plans to invest over $20 billion in key need areas of aviation.

The company plans to invest massively in key areas of aviation such as aircraft leasing, Maintenance, Repair Organization (MRO), Spares logistics and supply and aggregated services solutions.

All this is coming on the backdrop of a Work Together agreement it signed earlier today with American aircraft manufacturer, Boeing at the Aviation Education and Aviation Education Infrastructure conference

The thrust of the agreement is aimed at improving the industry will through the investments which will create opportunities for millions more as the areas they are focusing on will require local skills in diverse fields.

Mrs. Fagbemi said,“We have faced the realization that our proposed investment (inclusive of FDI) of over $20 Billion dollars in Aircraft Leasing, MRO, Spares Logistics and Supply and Aggregated Services Solutions will require the local skills in diverse fields ranging from piloting, aviation engineering, aviation economics, aviation law etc. We believe that this challenge is also relevant for the industry as a whole.”

She also challenged government to take measures to ensure air travel is affordable to the masses so that the market would be harnessed as well as exempt the industry from certain charges inimical to the industry’s growth.

“What do we ask from Government is commitment, commitment to increase primary demand for air travel. We need for government to commit today to “take” flying to the masses by making air travel affordable and convenient.”

She said Nigeria with a population of 180 million people has 12 million of people travelling domestically and less than five million of flying on the international routes.

“The propensity to travel for Nigeria is 0.12 while the propensity to travel for South Africa is 0.87. If Nigeria is to have 44 million passenger departures per annum, it will require over 100 aircraft to meet this propensity to travel, Nigeria will need more aircraft.

“To boost its international including intercontinental flight potential, the airlines have to improve in both the quality and quantity of the aircraft. In addition, the aircrafts have to be brand new to be at par with competition within Africa at the least.

Speaking earlier, representative of Boeing Company, Head of Sales, West and Central Africa, Larry Tailor saluted springfountain stating that they were proud working with the company.
