Business / Education- Medical Transcription by DerrenBrown: 7:20am On May 09, 2013
Hello Community,

The Association for Healthcare Document Integrity (AHDI) provides educational guidelines for educators in the Curriculum for Medical Transcription. Currently, there are no accredited medical transcription education programs. AHDI recommends candidates take a two-year program that includes a transcription externship program of a minimum of 100 hours. Intensive study should take place in medical terminology and health care documentation. Medical transcription schooling is not mandatory, but most employers require it in order to get the foot in the door. Proprietary and vocational-technical schools, community colleges and online programs offer medical transcription courses.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Mistakes To Avoid When Using Web Templates by DerrenBrown: 10:55am On May 06, 2013
Hello Friends,

There are a lot of websites out there that offer free and paid website templates. Templates are great, for they can save you a lot of effort and time when you want to create a new layout for your website. In fact, I use templates to create the design for all my websites - though I personalized them quite a bit.
There is a downside to using template, however. A lot of people make mistakes in the process of choosing and using a web template and end up with something that was unlike the image they had in mind. Here are some guidelines to help you avoid those mistakes.

Art, Graphics & Video / Significance Of Medical Documentation: by DerrenBrown: 7:12am On May 02, 2013
Hello Community,

Medical documentation is essential for standards of care to be met. In many scenarios, like those in acute care hospitals, many different health professionals may see the same patient, but not necessarily together. Your nurse, doctor, lab personnel and other specialists are all involved in your care, and everyone needs to be kept up to date with what everyone else is doing. Without such coordination, your medical care would suffer.

Computers / How To Have An Audio File Transcribed by DerrenBrown: 10:50am On Apr 15, 2013
Hello Friends,

You may have a telephone conversation, a taped interview of someone special to you or you\'ve dictated notes to yourself that you now want to have on paper. But in order to achieve the text to paper goal, you\'ll have to have the audio file transcribed.
1. Select the file you want transcribed. If the file is on a digital voice recorder, you can choose which format to have the computer uploaded onto your computer.
2. Download a transcription software program onto your computer. If you want to transcribe the audio file yourself, there are programs available such as \"Express Scribe.\" The program is free to download, but you may need to purchase accessories like a foot pedal to aid in transcribing the audio.
3. Upload your audio file to your software. With Express Scribe, there are over 20 formats compatible with the software that automatically sync when uploaded. If your audio is on a compact disc, insert that into your computer to listen to it through your transcription software.
4. Begin transcribing your audio. Use the foot pedal to slow down or speed up the audio file to meet your typing speeds.
5. Complete the transcription. Listen to the audio file a second time to compare it to the final transcription to check for discrepancies or missed audio.

Business To Business / Voice-to-text Software For Medical Transcription by DerrenBrown: 6:58am On Apr 02, 2013
Hello Friends,

Electronic medical records (EMIs) refers to technology that integrates computers, software and networking in an effort to reduce the costs of maintaining paper medical records. One key component of this technology is voice recognition software. Using advanced voice-to-text programs, physicians dictate notes into recording devices and later transcribe them into digital records.
Before the age of tape recorders, doctors scribbled hand-written notes on paper when they met with patients. These notes later became part of massive repositories of paper, sticky notes and folders stored in file cabinets. Organization was limited, and without the aid of computers, medical personnel had limited search capabilities. With the advent of audio recording devices, doctors began recording their notes onto tape recorders. Assistants or secretaries would later play back these recordings and transcribe what they heard using typewriters. Word processors replaced typewriters after the invention of personal computers.

National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) is an online system for transferring funds of financial institution, especially for the banks in India. This service is used mainly to transfer funds below Rs 100000.
The instant funds transfer system, known as the Real Time Gross Settlement(RTGS) cannot be used for an amount below Rs. 1 lakh by the banks as per the instructions of the banking regulator, the Reserve Bank of India. RBI has asked banks to offer National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) which provided T+0 and T+1 settlement system depending on the time a customer gives instruction to the bank for transferring the fund for small transactions.

Art, Graphics & Video / How Does An E-book Work? by DerrenBrown: 10:57am On Mar 21, 2013
Hello Friends,

The word e-book originated as an abbreviation for "electronic book." And that is what e-books are: books that are produced for distribution and subsequent reading on a computer or other electronic device, rather than being printed and bound as traditional books are.The vast majority of e-books on the market are distributed as PDF files, meaning they can be read on any computer or device that can read PDF files. (For example, if your computer has Adobe Acrobat or Preview installed, you can read e-books that are distributed as PDFs.) In other cases, e-books may be distributed in file formats that are specific to different individual e-book reader devices, such as Amazon's Kindle reader.

Computers / Re: Which ISP Is Suitable For Cybercafe At Abeokuta? by DerrenBrown: 3:59am On Mar 20, 2013
Hello Friends,

The speed of a cyber cafe network is the most important factor to consider as this can make or mar the business. Some cyber cafe owners buy bandwidth even before determining the number of computers to install on the network. However, it is the other way round; the amount of bandwidth you can afford for your cyber cafe determines the number of computers to be installed. By the way, bandwidth is the amount of data a network can upload or download in a second (measured in kbps or Mbps).
The best point to start is to determine the speed at which each computer in your cyber cafe should operate. Then determine how many computers you want to install, multiply the two and you have your bandwidth. We recommend a minimum bandwidth of 32 kilobits/second (kbps) per computer. Anything higher than this is great for your cyber cafe. If you must compromise, do not go below 16kbps per PC.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: I Need Help On Video/dvd Production by DerrenBrown: 3:49am On Mar 19, 2013
Hello Friends,

Whether you're the designated family video-maker or an experienced video professional, you'll come to a point where you have projects that require and upgrade of your current acquisition system. By acquisition system, we mean the gear that you take with you on the shoot, as opposed to the VCRs and edit controllers you have in your editing system. When it's time for an upgrade, many beginners rush out tot he nearest mall or video discount house, flash their credit cards and buy every new gadget they can think of. Without thinking ahead and planning their purchases, they end up with a closet full of expensive but useless stuff that won't work together and doesn't meet their video-making needs.
It's also important to plan your video system with the future in mind. The more video production you do, the better your skills become. Better skills often lead to a desire for better, more sophisticated equipment. There will also be a greater demand for your skills. Unless you have an incredible nest egg or win the lottery, you won't be able to completly replace your current system. Build your new system one step at a time, improving one component of the system at each step.

Hello Friends,

When doing your own video editing, closed captions and subtitles are not already included or automatically transcribed. Instead you will have to manually add these text versions of the dialogue contained within your videos using video transcription software. There are many pieces of software to choose from, and each has their pros and cons. There are three main ways you can purchase video transcription software. The first is freeware, which is completely free software you download over the Internet. Express Scribe and Hyper Transcribe are examples of this. The second is a purchasable product that's still downloadable over the Internet. This describe how you would purchase almost all of the other pieces, such as Transana which has the former, and InqScribe, which offeres the later.

Computers / Install Cable Modem To A Cable TV by DerrenBrown: 3:56am On Mar 08, 2013
Hello Friends,

If you subscribe to both high-speed cable Internet and cable television, you may have the need to connect both your modem and television to the same coaxial output in your home. Your cable modem needs to be connected to a coaxial output in order to receive a signal exactly like your television does. This can be achieved with the help of a two-way cable splitter.
1. Purchase a two-way coaxial cable splitter. Make sure the splitter you buy has one input and two outputs.
2. Power off your television and cable modem. Disconnect your cable modem from the coaxial output in the wall.
3. Connect your splitter to the coaxial cable attached to the wall. Make sure the cable coming from the wall is connected to the "In" connector of the splitter.
4. Connect a coaxial cable to one of the "Output" connectors of the splitter. Connect the other end of the coaxial to the cable modem connector.
5. Connect a second coaxial cable to the other "Output" connector of the splitter. Connect the other end of this coaxial cable to your television set.
6. Power on the cable modem and cable television. Make sure both devices are working properly and receiving a signal. If not, recheck your connections to make sure they are tight and connected correctly.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Graphic Design + Corporate Branding by DerrenBrown: 5:43am On Mar 02, 2013
Hello Friends,

To create a “brand” for a company is to create their image, and to promote that image with campaigns and visuals. Working in branding allows a graphic designer or design firm to get involved with many aspects of the industry, from logo design to advertising to copywriting and slogans. The goal of a brand is to make a company unique and recognizable, and to project a desired image. Over time, a brand can make a company a household name, and identifiable by a simple shape or color. To create a brand for a company, a designer needs to fully understand the goals of the organization, the industry as a whole, and working with design to create the appropriate materials to represent that company.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: How To Create A Video With Powerpoint by DerrenBrown: 7:46am On Feb 28, 2013
Hello Friends,

When you want to give a high-fidelity version of your presentation to colleagues or customers (either as an e-mail attachment, published to the web, on a CD or DVD), save it and let it play as a video. In PowerPoint 2010, you can now save your presentation as a Windows Media Video (.wmv) file, and distribute it confidently, knowing that your animated, narrated, multimedia presentation will play without a glitch. If you do not want to use the .wmv file format, you can use a preferred third party utility to convert your file to another format (.avi, .mov, etc).
Some tips to remember when recording your presentation as a video:
1. You can record and time voice narration and laser pointer movements in your video.
2. You can control the size of the multimedia file and the quality of your video.
3. You can include animations and transitions in your movie.
4. Viewers do not need to have PowerPoint installed on their computers to watch it.
5. If your presentation contains an embedded video, the video will play correctly without your needing to control it.
6. Depending on the content of your presentation, creating a video may take some time. Lengthy presentations and presentations with animations, transitions, and media content will likely take longer to create. Fortunately, you can continue to use PowerPoint while the video is being created

Art, Graphics & Video / Resizing Images In Evernote by DerrenBrown: 7:06am On Feb 27, 2013
Hello Friends,

This is a big issue for me. I copy and paste a lot of images to evernote for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it may be a decorating plan, or a photo idea, or a location I want to visit. Often the images can be much too large for my needs as they are often just things I want to remember. Unfortunately, the only way I can currently resize an image is to open that image into a separate editing program and then resize it. It would be really nice if I could do this through a simple right-click on the image which would allow me to select an option to resize. It doesn't have to be a fancy thing that allows me to drage corners and change aspect ratios. A simple popup box asking me what deminsions I want would be good enough with perhaps a checkbox to lock the aspect ratio in which case it does the math so tha if I reduce an image on the long side to x pixels, it makes the appropriate adjustment on the shirt side.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: NTSC To PAL Video Converter Now Available For Sale by DerrenBrown: 8:55am On Feb 26, 2013
Hello Friends,

A composite video signal combines on one wire the video information required to recreate a color picture, as well as line and frame synchronization pulses. The color video signal is a linear combination of the luminance of the picture, and a modulated subcarrier carries the chrominance or color information, a combination of hue and saturation. Details of the encoding process vary between the NTSC, PAL and SECAM systems.
The frequency spectrum of the modulated color signal overlaps that of the baseband signal, and separation relies on the fact that frequency components of the baseband signal tend to be near harmonics of the horizontal scanning rate, while the color carrier is selected to be an odd multiple of half the horizontal scanning rate; this produces a modulated color signal that consists mainly of harmonic frequencies that fall between the harmonics in the baseband luma signal, rather than both being in separate continuous frequency bands alongside each other in the frequency domain. In other words, the combination of luma and chroma is indeed a frequency-division technique, but it is much more complex than typical frequency division multiplexing systems like the one used to multiplex analog radio stations on both the AM and FM bands.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Do You Need A Mechanical & Electrical Autocad Design Engineer? by DerrenBrown: 2:56am On Feb 25, 2013
Hello Friends,

A design engineer creates the initial blueprints and schematics for various structures, systems, machines, or equipment. He or she is part of a design team that includes drafters and lead civil or mechanical engineers. Most people who do this job use advanced computer technology and applications, such as computer-aided design (CAD) software, to help them create and test virtual models. Depending on the type of structure or machine that is being built, an engineer may be asked to construct a physical model or prototype to test in realistic situations. Designers are employed in many different government organizations and industries, including research and development companies, construction firms, and product manufacturing plants.
Professional design engineers communicate with planning committees and other engineering specialists to coordinate design plans. They may be given very direct orders or broad conceptual frameworks, and asked to create blueprints that can be translated into working structures. An engineer often begins the process by creating sketches by hand or using CAD programs. Computer software programs allow designers to draw detailed lines, form curves, and input measurements. Other programs can put designs through virtual simulations to test their integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness.

Art, Graphics & Video / What Is A Wireless Notebook Computer? by DerrenBrown: 9:42am On Feb 22, 2013
Hello Friends,

A wireless notebook computer is simply a computer that is equipped with a type of network card so that it can connect to a wireless network. Most modern notebook computers come equipped with a wireless card already on board internally. Those that do not have a card can often be retrofitted with one so that connectivity can still take place once software is installed so that the card can interface with the computer.
The wireless notebook computer has become popular in recent years simply because of the mobile computing capability that comes along with them. In the past, it was difficult to be very mobile even with laptops due to the fact that connectivity to the Internet was still very much fixed to certain locations. Often, these locations involved wires. The advent of wireless networks changed all that.

Art, Graphics & Video / About Interview Transcription by DerrenBrown: 7:42am On Feb 14, 2013
Hello Friends,

Journalists, freelance writers, researchers and other staff that need to capture interview details in writing frequently look for an automated solution to transcribe their interviews. It can take hours to transcribe the text resulting from a brief phone interview, especially when an exact transcript is required.
Given its amazing recognition accuracy, many assume that Dragon speech recognition would be an ideal candidate for this task. The fact is that Dragon software was not designed to transcribe multiple voices. However, thousands of Dragon customers have successfully used the software to transcribe interviews using a basic technique called "voice writing" or "parroting." The key is how the interview content is delivered to Dragon.
Many people don’t realize that Dragon software is "speaker dependent" speech recognition. This means the software is designed to accurately transcribe the voice of a single speaker. When drafting an article or report, a user simply speaks out loud the text that he or she wants to appear on the screen. A user can complete articles and reports – either by dictating directly to the computer or by transcribing an electronic audio file of his/her voice from a digital recorder -- in a fraction of the time consumed by manual typing.
This changes when more than one speaker is introduced. Passing an audio file of an interview of two or more people directly to Dragon will not yield acceptable accuracy since the writer’s copy of Dragon is trained to recognize his/her own voice, not the voice of the person being interviewed. The “voice writing” approach delivers content to Dragon using only the voice of the trained speaker.

Hello Friends,

About once a month I receive a set of questions from an aspiring graphic designer. Usually they send me a set of questions assigned by their teacher. Most of the questions are the typical stock career day fodder and are largely irrelevant. I used to do my best answer them but I'm just too busy these days. So as a service I've compiled the most frequent questions, tossed out the irrelevant ones and added some of my own.
Now I'm just one guy. My experience is just that, mine. Your situation and experiences may be totally different. What works for me may not work for you. I'm also an entrepreneur at heart so it's not in my nature to seek employment in the traditional sense. In fact, I've never had a traditional graphic design job as I've always worked for myself. So I really have no idea what it's like to try to get hired at a design firm, nor am I interested in finding out.

Hello Friends,

I need a new laptop, any suggestions? I currently have an HP HDX18, only two years old, and it's absolutely horrible. It started failing on me a few months into using it with constant programs freezing, issues, and even the occasional random crash. It doesn't even let me update it, it either freezes while installing an update or the installation fails, and this has happened multiple times. I need a laptop that has Windows 7 and isn't too expensive. It has to be able to support Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and right now this laptop can't support them both without issues. I'm going to college in a few months and I need a new laptop soon, I know I can't take this to college with knowing I'll have major problems trying to get graphic-related assignments done. Preferably under $1,000 would be nice, if possible.
