Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, David Umahi, has said that governors in the region have no apology to issue to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)

The group had recently in an open letter made some demands on the governors including an open apology, Igbere TV reports.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, Umahi said, “We have no apology for IPOB because we did not proscribe them. Yes, we are the leaders of the people and we had to speak against their activities.”

IPOB had also threatened to attack the governors whenever they make foreign trips.

Umahi said the group lacked the power to place a travel ban on governors or anyone.

“IPOB has no powers to place travel ban on governors or anyone. I will even tell IPOB any time I intend to travel,” he said.

Foreign AffairsRwanda, DRC And Malawi Pull Out From WEF Africa Holding In South Africa by Despirado121(op): 10:15pm On Sep 03, 2019
Following the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, three countries have pulled out from this year's World Economic Forum on Africa.

The countries, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Malawi withdraw from the annual meeting of which was slated to held in Capetown, South Africa, on Wednesday, September 4th, in retaliation to the attacks going on in the host country, Leakers.ng reports.

The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. The Forum engages the foremost political, business and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.

In the “Doing business in Africa: a survey of CEOs.” themed meeting, Leakers.ng gathers that PwC Africa presents the findings of a survey of over 80 CEOs from 19 African countries.

It examines their views of the economy, prospects for revenue growth and the key opportunities and challenges facing businesses today.

It also benchmarks their views against those of their global peers.

The recent xenophobic attacks began last week after a taxi driver was murdered by an alleged drug dealer in Pretoria.

Speculations that the alleged killer was a Nigerian sparked protest, looting and burning of business centres owned by foreigners.

Three Nigerians were said to have been killed in the process with scores injured.

PoliticsOby Ezekwesili Reacts To Aisha Yesufu’s Twitter Account Suspension by Despirado121(op): 1:03pm On Aug 29, 2019
Former presidential candidate, Oby Ezekwesili, has urged Twitter to unfreeze the account of the co-founder of Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement, Aisha Yesufu.

Yesufu’s Twitter account was suspended with a notification that reads temporary restriction.

“Caution: this account is temporary restricted. You are seeing this warning because there has been some unusual activity from this account,” the notification read on Thursday.

Mrs Ezekwesili, in several tweets on Thursday, urged Twitter to release the suspended account, saying Yesufu was only holding the government accountable.

TravelUS Embassy Denies Blocking Visa Interview Appointments by Despirado121(op): 3:58pm On Aug 28, 2019
The US Embassy in Abuja has denied blocking appointment dates for visa interview of Nigerians seeking to travel to their country.

The embassy’s Public Affairs Department told newsmen on Wednesday that reports of the embassy blocking appointment dates for Nigerians awaiting visa interview were false.

Reports had said on August 20 that Nigerians who had applied for US visa could not get appointment dates for an interview despite payment of visa fees.

According to the reports, after payment, once an applicant attempts to make an interview appointment, the applicant is informed through the US Embassy’s consultant website CGI INC that there are no available dates for visa appointments.

“There has been no block on visa interviews. There are interview appointment opportunities available,” the embassy said.

The US embassy had announced on Tuesday that it had increased fees for Nigerians applying for tourism, student and business visas.

It said that effective from August 29 Nigerians applying for the aforementioned visas which used to cost N59, 200, would do so with an extra $110 (N40, 700) bringing the total amount to N99, 900.

According to the statement the embassy issued, applicants who are denied visas would not need to pay the extra N40, 700.

PoliticsMosque Demolition: Wike Is A Pathological Liar - MURIC by Despirado121(op): 8:39am On Aug 28, 2019
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights organisation has again attacked Governor Nyesom Wike and his administration over the alleged demolition of the Trans-Amadi mosque in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

In a statement released by its Director, Isahq Akintola today August 28th, the Islamic group called Governor Wike a pathological liar for “denying he pulling down the Trans-Amadi mosque”.

Recall that Governor Wike, denied media reports that a mosque was demolished in the state. In a statement he released on Monday, the governor warned muslims in the state not to allow themselves be used by disgruntled politicians to cause chaos in the state. Muslims in the state claimed the governor had sent bulldozers aided by thugs and mobile policemen to pull down the Trans-Amadi Central Mosque on Tuesday 20th August, 2019.

In this strong worded statement, the group blasted Governor Wike for describing the state as a Christian state.

“Wike is a pathological liar. He denied pulling down Trans-Amadi mosque. That is a lie from the pit of Jahannam. So what happened to Trans-Amadi mosque? Was it knocked down by invading elephants? Was there a cyclone in Port Harcourt? Wike can say that to the marines. Nigerians have seen a manifestation of the five evils Chamberlain spoke about in Rivers State: brute force, bad faith, injustice, oppression and persecution.

“Wike should have known the implications of his outbursts. Just two months ago (June 2019), he said, ‘Rivers State is a Christian state and I have no apologies for saying that.’ A cleric from the South West who was in the gathering commended him for making such a declaration. Any reasonable person will tie the two incidents together. We are constrained to congratulate Wike for walking his talk. It was like, ‘I told you people that this state is a Christian state and you are still building a new mosque. Boys! Go and pull it down!’

“His latest words, I did not demolish any mosque’ are therefore coming too late. They are afterthoughts and sheer play on semantics. He admitted pulling down ‘an illegal structure’. But how can a building whose plan was approved by the state government before you came into office become illegal? For the avoidance of doubt, the survey plan number of the building is AI/RV2009/D13 and the building plan number is RTP/09/617. Both were approved by the state government since 2009.

As far as Nigerians are concerned, those two documents are vital and a mosque is a mosque, whether it is a completed structure, half or quarter completed. Muslims congregate there and worship. There are uncompleted mosques all over Nigeria where Muslims worship daily. The case of Trans-Amadi Mosque cannot be isolated.

Mosques take years to finish in Nigeria these days for several reasons but it is common to see Muslims using them even as they are under construction. Funds come in trickles because mosques collect no tithes and foreign aid has been strangulated by United States embargo on aid from Arab countries whereas foreign aid continues to flow into churches, mostly from the same US.

Just yesterday, a church leader boasted that it planted 65,000 churches in six months. He has our best wishes but no state governor has the right to demolish our mosques no matter how poor they may appear. We cherish the devotion of Muslim worshippers and the serenity of our poor mosques more than any outward embellishment. Didn’t the Bible say ‘God is a spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth? (John 4:24)

Your Excellency, pictures do not lie. Neither do video clips, unless they are doctored. We watched three video clips where you declared that Rivers State is a Christian state. Can you deny that? We raw the rubble where there used to be a mosque structure. But you are now denying that you demolished a mosque. Who does not understand semantics?

Oh, we can see clearly. It became illegal because it is a mosque and it must go down because no new mosque must emerge after the ‘almighty’ governor has declared the state as a Christian state. A la l’etat c’est moi, n’est c’est pas? It had better not be. Even Louis XIV to whom that infamous declaration is attributed regretted his feudal absolutism on his deathbed when he said, ‘Je m’en vais, mais l’Etat demeurera toujours’, i.e. ‘I depart, but the State shall always remain’.

We remind Governor Wike that there are rules of engagement in every decent society and he must respect those rules. Wike is governor today but like the French king, Louis, he must go one day. Wike’s declaration of the state as a Christian state stands in contradistinction to Section 10 of the Nigerian Constitution. It is therefore unconstitutional and his demolition of the mosque is ultra vires.

Wike is definitely not the only Christian governor in a Christian-dominated state. Ten other states in the sub-region have very large Christian population: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, and Imo. But Wike is the only one who declared his state a Christian state. Wike wants to be more Christian than Jesus. What of the other governors? Are they not Christians as well? Who did this to Rivers State?

“The executive governor of Rivers State is now running from pillar to post in order to cover his tracks. But it is too late. Words are like eggs, they break into fragments once they are allowed to drop. Again, we must note that he repeated those words on three different occasions and in the presence of journalists. Once is happenstance, twice is a coincidence. The third time is enemy action. True to his words, Wike took a wicked decision, viz, to pull down the house of God.

“It is now clear to all and sundry that Wike does not look before he leaps. He acts on impulse. He should have known the implication of pulling down a mosque two months after declaring his state a Christian state. That is the question. That is the crux of the problem. They say action speaks louder than voice. This demolition is even worse than Wike’s unconstitutional declaration. We have no scintilla of doubt that Wike’s wicked action is a followup to his declaration.

“Our message to Governor Wike is this: Your Excellency sir, verily indeed we say unto you, you have bulldozers, we have Allah. You may bring down our mosque. You cannot remove iman (faith) and piety (taqwah) from our hearts. Islam is in our lives and a million bulldozers cannot extirpate it.

“To deceive Nigerians after demolishing a mosque, Wike argued that there were other mosques still standing in Port Harcourt. We reject Wike’s warped thinking. Those mosques he refered to were built before he came to power. They were built during the reign of governors who were not boastful, arrogant, belligerent and power drunk.

“It will be in Wike’s best interest to invite the management of Trans-Amadi Mosque which he pulled down wilfully, consciously and deliberately. That action is illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional in view of a court declaration that the property belongs to the Muslims.

“Wike is advised to undo what he has done by engaging the management of that mosque in dialogue. Wike must refund the total cost of what he caused to demolish and allow construction work to resume at the site. Only this can douse the tension generated by Wike’s wicked act. In addition, the Roi Soleil of Rivers State is advised to, in his remaining days in office, engage in tactical withdrawal of his inflammatory, unguarded and unconstitutional statement about his state being a Christian state.

“Meanwhile, we implore Nigerian Muslims to remain calm and law abiding. There should be no tit for tat. Not all Christian governors are like the governor of Rivers State and definitely not all Christians are as bellicose, militant, boastful, arrogant and mischievious as Nyesome.

“Wike’s wickedness may surpass that of Herod but thousands of Nigerian Christians are kind-hearted, warm and friendly. We therefore advise against any revenge action by any Muslim governor against any church building. Neither should any Muslim individual or group attack any individual Christian or group of Christians in any part of the country.

“We invite Nigerians to love one another regardless of religion and ethnicity. We urge peace-loving Christians to ignore the divisive, autocratic and self-righteous antics of Wike. This man cannot be the ambassador of Nigerian Christians. We need peace to build a prosperous Nigeria. We are therefore willing to live in peace with our Christian neighbours.

“In summary, we assert that Wike is a pathological liar for denying his role in the demolition of Trans-Amadi Mosque in PortHarcourt. We demand adequate compensation for the destroyed mosque and the right to resume construction at the site with immediate effect. Finally, we extend our hand of fellowship to peace-loving and law-abiding Christians throughout Nigeria.”

Science/Technology70-Year-Old Malnourished Elephant Performing In Sri Lanka Goes Viral by Despirado121(op): 4:47am On Aug 17, 2019
These photos showing a 70-year-old emaciated elephant who walked long distances chained while performing at a festival in Sri Lanka has caused outrage on social media.

According to BBC News, the photos were shared on Facebook on Tuesday by a Thailand-based advocacy group that provides assistance to Thailand's captive elephant population through local community outreach, rescue and rehabilitation programs, and educational ecotourism operations, the Save Elephant Foundation (SEF).

In the heartbreaking photos shared by the foundation on its official page, Tikiri appears to be malnourished, with the shape her bones and her ribcage showing evidently.

According to the foundation, "Tikiri walks for miles every night so people can enjoy the festival. Nobody can see thin bodies with visible bones or weak conditions because their bodies are covered with robes.”

"Nobody saw his eyes watering from the lights and because of the accessories that closed his eyes, no one saw him having difficulty walking because the elephant's legs were also chained while walking," it added, referring to the annual Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka.

In reaction to the photos, many expressed anger and sadness after seeing the fate of poor Tikiri. Many users also initiated a petition to help Tikiri.

"Seeing these beautiful creatures being treated and used in this disgusting way shows that humans feel very superior. This must be stopped and I will write to the Sri Lankan government," a user said.

PoliticsGovernor Fayemi Swears In New Council Chair Amid Opposition From Monarchs by Despirado121(op): 4:49pm On Aug 15, 2019
Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has inaugurated the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi, as chairman of the state’s council of traditional rulers.

The governor swore in the new chair on Thursday at the Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office in Ado Ekiti despite protests from 17 aggrieved traditional rulers, Igbere TV reports.

The aggrieved monarchs had filed a suit at Ado Ekiti High Court seeking the nullification of the appointment.

They said Fayemi contravened the Ekiti State Chieftaincy Law which stipulates that the chairman can only be appointed among Alademerindinlogun/Pelupelu Obas.

The monarch alleged that the promotion of Alawe to Pelupelu status was political and that could not grant him the power to become the chairman of the council.

They also shunned the inauguration ceremony. However, other monarchs under the platform of Majority Obas’ of Ekiti State were present.

At the inauguration, Fayemi called on all royal fathers to support the present administration’s efforts at bringing development to every part of the state.

“I enjoined our royal fathers and Ekiti ketes to eschew baseless and unnecessary rivalry that can lead to communal clash,” Fayemi said.

In his acceptance speech, the Alawe promised to be fair to all Obas regardless of status.

CrimeKidnappers Of Pastor Elisha Noma Demand N20m Ransom by Despirado121(op): 6:00pm On Aug 14, 2019
Kidnappers of Reverend Elisha Noma of Nagarta Baptist Church in Angwan Makiri, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have demanded N20 million ransom.

The gunmen, about 20 of them, were said to have stormed the pastor’s residence early Wednesday, Igbere TV reports.

The cleric’s son, Emmanuel Elisha, who was initially taken but set free to get the ransom ready in five days, said that the abductors contacted the family asking for N20 million ransom.

He said: “The kidnappers called this afternoon and demanded N20 million ransom.

“They still reiterated their threat that they will kill him if we fail to bring the money within five days.”

Emmanuel said they were negotiating with the kidnappers on bringing down the ransom.

He had earlier said they have been sceptical about reporting the incident to the police because “when we had similar experience in the past and we contacted them, they did not do anything about it.”

PoliticsCompletely Out-of-touch Leader- Ezekwesili Slams Buhari's Claim Of Food Security by Despirado121(op): 2:24pm On Aug 14, 2019
Oby Ezekwesili has rubbished President Buhari's claim of Food security in Nigeria.

Recall that the President yesterday said the Agricultural sector under his administration has recorded massive growth and development as more billionaires have emerged through agriculture and most importantly, there is full food security.

Describing President Buhari as a ''completely out-of-touch leader’', Ezekwesili who was a former Minister of Education, lambasted the claims made by the President, Igbere TV reports.

She described as a ''blunder'' Preident Buhari's directive to the Central Bank of Nigeria not to issue Foreign exchange to importers of food products.

See her tweets below;

“A completely out-of-touch ‘leader’. He is cocooned away in the grandeur of @AsoRock where they serve him delicatessen and praise-sing to him: “Ranka dede Sir, your Agriculture Policy is working wonderfully. All farmers in Nigeria are now Billionaires & exporting to the US”

We all know that @NGRPresident @MBuhari has absolute contempt for Data but we shall go ahead and put out here some of the Knowledge he should have had before making this latest blunder of ‘Directing’ what should be an independent @cenbank to “not give a cent for food import”.

I will share the latest information on Nigeria from FEWS NET, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, which provides information and analysis on food insecurity around the world.
That our @NGRPresident thinks we have achieved Food Security says a lot about his Policy-Making.

FEWS Net is Famine Early Warning Systems Network. It “uses an integrated approach that considers climate, agriculture production, prices, trade, nutrition, and other factors, together with an understanding of local livelihoods.”

Knowledge that helps Evidence-Based Policies.

In the next few tweets, I’ll share highlights of FEWS Net June 2018 to January 2019 Report on Food Insecurity in Nigeria for many reasons that any reasonable person will easily understand.

“Humanitarian actors have provided sustained food assistance delivery in 2018, reaching 2.5 million people in April 2018 across the 3 northeast states. In May, food assistance deliveries reached 15 percent fewer households, meeting targets closer to what was seen in March 2017”

“With the continuing military offensive, new arrivals continue to be identified in the northeast. As of May, IOM identified 1.8 million people displaced by conflict in northeast Nigeria. Between late Nov2017 &April 2018 an estimated 100,000 new arrivals across Borno & Adamawa...”

“Outside northeast, the main agric season is progressing favorably in much of the rest of the country, &harvests are expected to be average to above-average. Most households will have seasonally typical access to food, income& remain in Minimal (IPC Phase 1) acute food insecurity”

“Various stages of cultivation activities continue throughout the country. In south &some central areas, they have begun harvesting early green maize&tubers. In other areas of central Nigeria, planting, weeding, &fertilizer application for maize, sorghum &legumes is underway.”

“Planting of staples such as millet, sorghum, and maize, as well as groundnut, cowpea, and sesame cash crops, is progressing in most northern areas. Government support through the Anchor Borrowers’ Program continues to contribute to farmers’ access to improved inputs.”

“However, areas worst-affected by farmer/pastoralist conflict are facing greater difficulty accessing basic needs and will be Stressed (IPC Phase 2).”

”In displaced settlement areas and larger cities, affected populations have restricted access to land for cultivation. Additionally, ongoing insecurity is again in 2018 keeping many from engaging or participating fully in cultivation.”

“Heavy conflict between pastoral and farming communities in central and northern areas of the country also continue. These conflicts have left hundreds dead and lead to the destruction of property.”

”These conflicts are also leading to the displacement of households and keeping many from their livelihoods. Both cultivation activities and pastoralists’ herd movements are affected.”

“Main agricultural season: The agricultural season is expected to progress normally. The main season harvests will start normally in September/October across the country. Harvests are expected to be average to above average in most areas.”

“Exceptions are in northeast areas affected by the insurgency and localized areas across the country where conflicts between farmers and pastoralists are disrupting cultivation”

“Main harvests will be substantially below average in the northeast and likely below average in areas impacted by the farmer/pastoralists conflict mainly in the central states such as Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba as well as in Zamfara.”

”As with most years, it is also likely that there will be some crop loss due to excessive flooding along major floodplains.”

I have put out highlights of FEWS Net Report on Nigeria up to January 2019.
As obvious from the Report, there are positives on Agriculture which for example include improved farmers’ access to input from the Anchor Borrowers Scheme.
But, nothing of Food Security yet exists.

What is Food Security, @NGRPresident ?
I will offer the universal meaning provided by the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security because that should help a Policy Maker know easily whether such is the case in Nigeria before taking a major Policy stance in Agriculture.

Food security, as defined by the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, means that all people, at all times, have physical, social&economic access to sufficient, safe, & nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life.”

PoliticsDaura Residents To Buhari: "We Only Have Light When You Are Around" by Despirado121(op): 2:06pm On Aug 14, 2019
President Buhari who is currently in Daura, Katsina state, was yesterday informed by his kinsmen that they only enjoy power suppy whenever he is in town. President Buhari travelled home for the Sallah Holiday.

While receiving some of his community leaders in his home on Tuesday August 13th, one of the leaders, Mohammed Saleh, complained bitterly about the epileptic power supply they suffer whenever he is not in town, Igbere TV reports.

According to Saleh, whenever the President is in town, they enjoy 24 hours power supply.

“Anytime the President is around we enjoy 24 hours power supply. But if he is not around, the power supply is not always stable,” Saleh said.

PoliticsGov. Fayemi Congratulate Muslims On Eid-El-Kabir by Despirado121(op): 1:37am On Aug 11, 2019
Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has congratulated the Muslims in the state and in the country as they join other faithful Muslims around the world to celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir.

In a goodwill message signed by his chief press secretary, Yinka Oyebode, on Saturday, the governor encouraged the Muslim Ummah to carry on the lessons of love, loyalty and sacrifice which form the foundation of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, during and after the festivities.

Fayemi also urged the Muslim Ummah to see the Eid-el-Kabir festival as an opportunity for spirit renewal and sober reflection as demanded by almighty Allah from the Muslims.

As the governor was congratulating the faithful Muslims for witnessing another celebration, he also called for collaboration with the disciples of other religions in the country in the pursuit for peace and progress.

He also urged them to keep praying for the country so that peace and stability will be restored in the troubled spots.

According to him, Nigerians need to assimilate the lessons of commitment, dedication and obedience to higher authority as demonstrated in Prophet Ibraheem’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to the word of God.

“It is only through love for one another and commitment to peace, security and stability that our country can progress,” he opined.

“As we celebrate this year’s Eid-el- Kabir, it is important we remember our dear country and ask for divine intervention in the security situation as well as restoration of peace in the troubled areas.

“I extend warm greetings to the Muslim Ummah in Ekiti State and Nigeria as a whole as we celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festival. I believe the prayers of the faithful can get us the peace and prosperity our country needs.”he concluded.

PoliticsReno Omokri And Daughter In Leah Sharibu-Inspired Outfit (Photo) by Despirado121(op): 2:35pm On Aug 08, 2019
Former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, took picture with his daughter to model the Armani range of his #FreeLeahSharibu outfits.

The former presidential aide shared a picture of himself and daughter on Twitter onThursday

In the tweet, Mr. Reno thanked his social media followers for helping to raise £5,000 for Leah’s parents to use to seek justice for their daughter including the fact that the money was paid directly into the bank account of Leah's father.

“My daughter and I model the @armani range of my #FreeLeahSharibu. I thank my followers who have enabled me raise £5000 for Leah’s parents to use to seek justice for their daughter. EVERY PENNY HAS BEEN PAID DIRECTLY TO LEAH’s FATHER’S ACCOUNT. Keep praying for Leah,” he said.

Recall that Omokri challenged anyone with evidence of him receiving money for personal gain in the guise of Leah’s freedom campaign to go public.

Leah was a Christian girl among 110 students of Government Girls Science and Technical Secondary School, Dapchi, kidnapped on February 19, 2018 .

But she wasn't released while other girls retain their freedom because she refused to denounce her Christian faith.
