The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Rivers State University and the University of Port Harcourt, Choba, have said they would not shield any lecturer found culpable of corrupt practices or sexual harassment of students in their institutions.


ASUU Chairman at the RSU, Dr. Emmanuel Ekwuolo, stated this while speaking on the sex-for-grade undercover video released by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), recently.

Ekwuolo advised students of the university with evidence of corrupt practices or sexual harassment by any lecturer to submit same to him.

“There are things that can be determined and some of the persons dismissed. But most importantly, it is for us to encourage those students who are victims to report the matter.

“I assure you that if such things happen, the first thing we do is to get to the Dean and the Head of Department and tell them that we don’t want to see any student victimized.

“We ensured that no one did so. We monitor from the beginning to the end. We encourage students to confide in us.



“If they think they cannot confide in the administration, maybe, their Deans or Heads of Department, they can confide in the union and provide evidence. No matter how high ranking you are, if you are found guilty, you will face justice,” he warned.

Similarly, the ASUU Chairman at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Austen Sado, challenged students in the institution to submit evidence of sexual harassment against any lecturer, promising to help them get justice.



“I am challenging anybody in the University of Port Harcourt who has information about anybody, and you can give us evidence about it, to bring it forth.

“Lecturers have been sacked in the University of Port Harcourt for misconduct, and to a reasonable extent, we worked with the administration to make sure that some lecturers were disciplined,” Sado stated.



He recalled that lecturers found to have committed one infraction or the other in the past were disciplined for acts such as ‘extortion and people doing more than one job,” noting that “the union is fighting to expose it.”



Meanwhile, the 2019 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, commended the senate for reintroducing the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill.

Atiku expressed hope that the move would be an intervention in addressing the sex for grades scourge ravaging Nigeria’s universities.

The Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, had, yesterday, during plenary reintroduced the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill.



He had explained that the reintroduction of the bill was due to call by concerned parents and youth that law be enacted against sexual harassment in workplaces and educational institutions.

Reacting, the former Vice President, in a tweet wrote: “I welcome the reintroduction of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill, a carryover from the 8th @NGRSenate.

“I hope that it will be one among several interventions in addressing the #SexForGrades scourge and in ensuring that our campuses are rid of predators.-AA”

This is coming at a time a documentary by BBC exposed a lecturer with the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Boniface Igbeneghu, after he was caught on camera demanding sex from an undercover journalist who posed as an admission seeker.

Igbeneghu is a former sub-dean of the Faculty of Art and head pastor of local Foursquare Gospel Church.

The church has since suspended the alleged randy pastor and distanced itself from Igbeneghu.

Makurdi…The Benue State Government, on Thursday arraigned Mr. Andrew Ogbuja, a 54 years old Senior Lecturer at the Benue State Polytechnic Ugbokolo for the alleged rape of a late minor, Ochanya Ogbanje.
He was arraigned alongside his son Victor who is at large, before a Makurdi High Court presided over by Justice Augustine Ityonyiman on a four- count charge of allegedly criminal conspiracy, rape and murder of the 13-year-old girl.

Mr. Ogbuja’s arraignment came nearly a year after Ochanya’s death on October 17, 2018 from alleged complications arising from prolonged rape by the accused and his son.

At the mention of the case, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him but the prosecuting lawyer, Mr. Paul Ukande, a Deputy Director, Public Prosecution, Benue State Ministry of Justice prayed the court to remand him pending the full commencement of trial. Counsel to the accused, Mr. Abel Onoja, applied for an order of the court compelling the prosecutor to ensure that the medical experts named in the suit were brought before the court to testify during commencement of full trial.

“My Lord, I have a motion which seeks to compel the prosecution to produce medical experts who have been mentioned in the proof of evidence to be put on notice as to their physical appearance in court, so that they can testify when the trial commences,” Onoja stated.

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday that he has instructed all the relevant agencies involved in the recovery of looted assets such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), to sell all forfeited assets and the money put in the Treasury Single Account (TSA).

This came just as the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) said that the Committee has recovered looted assets of about N1 trillion and that the money was used for the national budget and the Social Investment Programmes (SIP) which includes the school feeding programme.

The Chairman of the PACAC, Prof. Itsey Sagay also said panel would now concentrate its fight against corruption at the top level of government where powerful people use state funds for personal needs. Hosting members of PACAC at the State House, Abuja, President Buhari promised to beam the searchlight on the cost of governance, and weed out possible corruption that exists anywhere.

The President in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, thanked members of the Committee for the “major sacrifice “they’ve made in accepting the assignment to serve the country,” noting, “some of the elite won’t trust you, and you will be alienated, no matter how close you are to them.” Recalling experience of the past, in which assets were seized from officials who couldn’t explain how they got them, “only for those assets to be returned to them when government was changed,” President Buhari vowed that such would not recur, as he had given instructions that all forfeited assets be sold, “and the money put in the Treasury Single Account.” He said: “Let’s see who will now take back the money from the treasury, and give back to those people, as was done in the past.” Prof.

Sagay, who led the delegation, said Nigeria was lucky more than ever to have a person of President Buhari’s credentials as leader of the government. “We congratulate you for being a star of the anti-corruption struggle in Africa.

You attach a lot of importance to the fight against corruption, and we have tried to achieve the aims you had in mind when you established PACAC.” Prof. Sagay said the committee trains and builds the capacity of anti-corruption agencies, and has helped to develop a programme of non-conviction assets recovery, which is recording great successes.

Mrs Margaret Oputa, wife of late Supreme Court Justice, Chukwudifu Oputa and mother of foremost Nigerian showbiz maestro and activist, Charles Oputa, a.k.a Charlyboy, has passed on.

Charlyboy confirmed reports of her death to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

The 68-year-old grand-father also took to his social media page to mourn his late mother with an elegy, describing her as simple, humble and caring.

Charlyboy wrote: “My dearest Mother, you couldn’t just wait for me to come back before you sneaked away to the great beyond.

“Now all I have are beautiful loving Kodak memories of our times together. You tried for me, for us and many of the people who were privileged to encounter your kindness and your love.

“Thank you for allowing me take care of you. Thank you for being That Great Woman who gave birth to The Icon, CharlyBoy.

“Thank you for teaching me how to care, to love, to live a simple and humble Life. Thank you for constantly reminding me of my pedigree and my very Rich Heritage.

“I wish you would have waited just one more day, but I guess you didn’t want me to see you go, because as usual I would have talked you out of it, I know we both hate goodbyes.

“Greet Papa when you see him, tell him I have been holding forth. Gallant as ever. Love you my Darling Mother.”

Although, the late Oputa stayed with Charlyboy for over two decades before her demise, he lamented that he was out of town when the sad incident occurred.

Charlyboy did not however disclose the age at which his mother passed on.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the National Assembly (NASS) to redirect the 2020 budget to areas that would better serve the interest of majority of Nigerians.

The party gave the advice in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan on Tuesday in Abuja. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday presented a N10.7 trillion 2020 budget to the joint session of the National Assembly.

Kogi, Bayelsa Guber: PDP assures members of reconciliation(Opens in a new browser tab) Ologbondiyan said that the budget as it is would further impoverish Nigerians and mortgage the future of the nation. ”The core of the budget remains hazy, showing streaks of padding, duplication, replete with false performance indices, deceptive projections and inexplicable expenditure assertions,” he said.

These according to him would create openings for diversion of public funds. “The budget is skewed to serve the interest of the opulent, as projects that have direct bearing on the well being of the masses were not substantially accommodated in the overall expenditure profile,” he said Ologbondiyan also criticised what he termed allocations for “alleged vague projects”, particularly the Ministries of Works and Housing as well as Transportation, where according to him there were allegations of diversion of public funds in the last budget. “Standing with millions of Nigerian youths and women, our party rejects the paltry budgets of N48 billion for education and N46 billion for health and urges the National Assembly to review the allocations in the interest of Nigerians.”

Nigerian international act, Wizkid in a latest interview with Okay Africa on Thursday disclosed a lot that has been happening with him especially this year.
The Star Boy record label owner spoke extensively on his latest song ‘Joro’, which was released a few days ago.
Wizkid disclosed that Joro was inspired by love.
He said:-

It was inspired by love. It’s talking about not wanting to lose love. “Joro” means enjoyment, so on the chorus it means at the end of the day, “if I can be with you, we can enjoy ourselves.

He also spoke on what happened during the production of the song.

[It was] produced by Northboi and mixed by STG. Big up to my guys. There was a part recorded when I had my son Zion with me. I actually had to wait for him to sleep. I wanted to drop it to mark Nigerian Independence. It’s for my people. I always want to recognize my people, my country.’

Although, some critics are of the opinion that the song ‘Joro’ lacked content, however, Wizkid on his part seems not be bothered about that as he is preparing for the StarBoyFest to hold this month.

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) Joint Venture (JV) has appealed to its host communities to continue to create the enabling environment for sustainable business growth.
Mr Igo Weli, the SPDC General Manager, External Relations, made the appeal on Thursday at the inauguration of 34 community projects in Ogulagha Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta.
The projects were executed through a Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) between SPDC and Ogulagha Kingdom Cluster Development Board (OKCDB).
Weli was represented at the occasion by Mr Arthur Owagbedia, the Installation Manager, SPDC Forcados Terminal.
He said it was only when businesses thrive that the oil giant could undertake more social investment initiatives in Niger Delta communities.
According to him, the oil multinational remains committed to the creation of greater positive impact in the oil-bearing communities and the entire Niger Delta region.
“The Ogulagha Kingdom Communities will benefit more social investment projects and programmes if people can continue to promote peace, safety and growth among themselves and support SPDC-JV’s sustained uninterrupted production.
“I encourage all stakeholders to speak up against sabotage of facilities, because willful damage of the company assets, like pipelines, is a criminal act that sadly has a far-reaching negative implications for people and the environment.
“Sabotage to facilities harms the environment and is also unsafe for those undertaking these dangerous activities.
“We must speak up against the theft of crude oil, vandalism and the attendant damage to our environment,” he said.
In his remarks, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta reiterated the state government’s commitment to provide safe and enabling environment for investors.
Okowa, represented by Mr Emmanuel Amgbaduba, the Commissioner for Oil and Gas in Delta, also urged SPDC to improve on its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to the host communities.
“I will do everything humanly possible to make Delta a business destination.
“The SPDC and other oil companies should improve on their CSR in the areas of employment, contracts and award of scholarship,” he said.
Earlier, the Chairman of Ogulagha Kingdom Cluster Development Board, Mr Linus Yeinanagbegha, said the board was inaugurated in 2015 and started receiving fund in 2016.
Yeinanagbegha said that the board had embarked on several projects across the Ogulagha Kingdom.
He said that some of the projects had been completed, while others were at various stages of completion.
Yeinanagbegha listed some of the completed projects for inauguration to include: construction and furnishing of three units of two-bedroom flats in teachers quarters, Construction of two units, six standard public conveniences, among others.

Chelsea striker, Tammy Abraham says he’s yet to make a decision of whether to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles or the Three Lions of England.


There are reports that England manager, Gareth Southgate could name Abraham today in the squad that will face Czech Republic and Bulgaria in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, but the 21-year-old has revealed he is still undecided on who he will represent.



Abraham has been in impressive form in the colours of the Blues, having scored eight goals in 10 appearances in all competitions this season.

The former England youth international, who can still play for the Super Eagles despite featuring for England in an international friendly game, has become a hit under Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a journalist-activist, Mr Chido Onumah, who is a Columnist with an Online News medium.
Mr Onumah, a journalist and author, is said to have been arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International, Abuja on Sunday evening.
It is reported that Mr Onumah had just returned to Nigeria from Spain, where he had obtained a PhD in communication studies.
The Columnist is the author of a book titled, ‘We Are All Biafrans.’
In a telephone conversation, the Public Relations Officer of the Service, Doctor Peter Afunanya, said he was not in the office as at the time of filing this report so he could neither confirm nor deny the arrest of Mr Onumah.
