Autos / Where In Nigeria Can I Get 'corruption-free' FRSC Team by DevGuru: 6:40pm On Jan 09, 2017
Dear Nairalanders,

I have read in newspapers, heard on radio and watched FRSC officials on TV saying the official fee for obtaining driving license is N6,500. A government official even said recently that we should report anyone that demands for more than N6,500. Last year, their oga at the top urged Nigerians not to pay anyone more than N6,500 for driving license. But I am yet to see any license holder who did not pay far more than that amount. Have I been talking to the wrong people? Is corruption truly being fought in this country?

Please I am ready with my N6,500... which office should I go?

Thank you.

Phones / The Rice Technique For Repairing Phone - Fact NOT Myth by DevGuru: 8:09am On Dec 01, 2016
This is actually a counter-thread to a recent post by CellPhoneRepai wherein he regarded the rice technique for repairing phone as a myth. Before regarding it as a myth, anyone can do a little research into how the technique works and what might cause it to fail. A phone repairer or an engineer may find it difficult to understand but a crop scientist like me will understand it. It works wonders provided you follow the rules. It has worked well for me on four phones and even a laptop that a huge volume of water spilled on. It is dry rice and not cooked rice so I wonder how sugar molecules will get to the phone board as the writer claimed.

MY SCIENTIFIC SUBMISSION ON HOW IT WORKS

Rice is very hygroscopic - which means it has a great affinity for water. It absorbs water molecules from its immediate surroundings. To make this technique work on a phone that dropped inside water, the following conditions must be fulfilled:

1. The phone must not be in the water for more than a few seconds. This means that the faster you get the phone out of water the more reliable the rice technique is.

2. The battery MUST be removed IMMEDIATELY - the longer the battery stays in the phone after the water incident, the less the likelihood of the rice technique saving your phone. Delay for a few seconds might cause you to visit a phone repair shop because a charged battery being in the phone will facilitate short-circuiting on the motherboard which might make the phone malfunction even after the water is completely drained out.

3. Put the phone (without the battery) inside a fairly large quantity uncooked rice. Not just on top of the rice bag but dipped deep inside the rice and completely covered with the rice. The more the rice, the higher the effectiveness of this technique. This is because the rice grains that are closest to the phone will be the first to absorb water molecules and those grains will have to transfer the moisture to the ones farther from the phone.

4. Use rice that is stored in a completely dry environment. If the rice has been stored in an environment with high relative humidity, this technique might not work because the rice grains are already possibly saturated with moisture and their ability to absorb more is extremely weak. The same thing goes for rice stored in a container that had some water in it before pouring the rice. The grains have already absorbed the water and can now absorb less.

5. You must resist any urge to replace the battery and use the phone within 24 hours from the time you insert it into the rice. The long wait might save you some few bucks. Calls, Facebook, Whatsapp and others can wait till the rice grains have perfected their magical healing on your phone. Sometimes, you may have to keep the phone there for longer period depending on the severity of the incident and the size of the phone, in the end, it will surely pay off. In the case of my laptop, I left it inside a bag of rice for a whole week. It's well over six months now and it has never shown any sign of malfunctioning caused by the water.

COMPARISON BETWEEN THE RICE TECHNIQUE AND SUN DRYING / HEATING

Many people have left their phones outside in the hot sun to drain the water and perceived that this technique worked only to begin to notice some anomalies in the functioning of the phone some days after the sun-drying. Sun works best in removing surface moisture and does not completely remove tiny water molecules already clogged in some 'micro' spaces on the circuit board. Sun first heats up the hardware and then causes the moisture to evaporate. This causes moisture migration within the phone and the evaporated water might condense at a different part of the board if it hits a cooler surface. This is why some phones sometimes have cloudy screen several hours after sun-drying.

In contrast, the rice technique doesn't require that the phone gets heated. Though the ambient temperature may influence the rate of water absorption, most dry rice would do appreciably well under room temperature. Also, the water doesn't condense in the phone, it just finds its way out to hit the rice grains.

Thank you for your time.

Religion / Does God Really Frown At A Christian Who Takes A Tablet To Church As Bible by DevGuru: 12:24pm On Oct 30, 2016
Happy Sunday to my fellow Nairalanders,

I am a tech savvy person and for the past 4-5 years, apart from filling cheque leaves or other forms, I can't remember any other thing I use a pen for. I am so used to typing on my iPad that my handwriting is now very horrible. If I go for meetings where I can't write, I simply make an audio recording of the proceedings. I also type church sermons on my iPad and I'm fast at it. I have different Bible versions and commentaries on it and I can make comparisons.

Recently, my Pastor's comments regarding using tablets as Bible are making me feel very uncomfortable in Church. Many of you already know what those who are against it usually say. He added that even herbalists and Ifa priests now use tablets and that what a Christian uses should be different. During the prayer session today, he asked us to raise our Bibles up as weapon to fight our enemies and pray with the 'weapons' raised up. Everybody including the Pastor raised their Bibles but I raised my iPad. I just can't describe the look of an outcast which I suffered from other obedient Bible-carrying Christians in the Church today.

Does God really frown at reading Bible on an electronic gadget?

Benita27:
In order to burst your bubble Sir!,...i don't do home movies. grin
Secondly, your observation was right...i will naturally be scared of meeting my mother in-law for the first time.

Why will your wife hide to those advice given to her by her sisters if she has a kind mother in-law?.

All been said still doesn't change the fact that there are mean mothers in-law.

I'm glad you are here! Firstly, denying watching home movies can't help your case as you can never deny its influence in the world you and I live in. If you could be afraid of meeting a woman you've never met before simply because of your unholy and preposterous presumption, you've already spelt what the outcome of your relationship with her would be.

And regarding my wife's case, she is the last born and has 4 married female siblings who are all at loggerheads with their mother-in-laws and they decided to advise her ahead of the time her own would probably start. I just hope that you (Benita27) will not transmit your own resentment for mother-in-laws to your younger ones (if you have any)...

Family / Why Do Nigerian Wives Nurse A Presumption Of Meanness From Their Mother-in-laws? by DevGuru: 9:30pm On Oct 08, 2016
This is meant to be a counter-thread to a post made by Benita27 titled "Why Are Nigerian Mother In-laws Too Mean Towards Their Daughter In-laws?" For ease of reference, the post has been reproduced below:

I noticed 80% of our Nigerian mother in-laws threat their daughter in-laws badly unlike their foreign counterparts, and this trend is so common, once a man says he wants to take you to see his parents instead of excitement a certain fear creeps in.
personally i'm not scared of meeting the man's father because i assume father's trust their sons to have made the right choices, but for the mothers is not usually the same, was able to ask someone if she felt same and she confessed feeling worse. grin
Why are our Nigerian mother in-laws so mean?.
Need your contributions, and Ladies how do you feel when getting to meet them?.

Even though Benita27 claimed to have sought clarification, she already indirectly made a clarification to the issue by revealing that she would naturally be afraid to meet her mother-in-law, even if it was for the first time. The environment through Nollywood has poisoned our ladies' minds so that by default, as they are planning to get married, they consciously prepare for war with their innocent mother-in-laws. This situation is so bad that even the meekest mother-in-law may become somewhat cruel as a result of the extremely defensive attitude which the wife displays. There are many good mother-in-laws but our ladies are now taught never to give them a space.

I'm not sure of other ethnic groups but I can speak of mine, Yoruba. This menace seems to have found a permanent seat among us and it usually throws this ugly situation at us (husbands) - You have to Choose one between your mother and me!.

Someone might wonder why I feel so concerned. It's because my wife carelessly lost a great fortune to this menace. Her married sisters advised her never to be friendly with my mother even though she had no reason to be cruel towards my mother - the incident remains the ugliest I've ever witnessed in my marriage... It's really a long story but you can read it here https://www.nairaland.com/3206538/wifes-siblings-breaking-us-apart

Webmasters / Re: Why A Digital Marketing Agency Should Build Your New Website by DevGuru: 6:51am On Jul 30, 2016
These points here are formidable. The problem with most Nigerian businesses is that they concentrate too much on increasing profit by over-cutting costs which makes them settle for mediocrity. That's why they patronize those freelancing Web designers who just put 'something' online for them. A digital marketing firm on the other hand has a team of professionals and every member has a role to play in the process of developing a functional website.

If this administration wants to show sincerity in the fight against corruption, EVERY allegation of corruption (even if it's from a mad or estranged person) MUST be investigated and the findings made public to clear the air in case any allegation is found to be false. Allegations against Fashola, Amaechi, Dogara, Fayose, Saraki, Tinubu etc must not be ignored or swept under the carpet. No selective investigation!!!
