Many Christians are convinced that they are required to tithe(paying a tenth of their income). “tithes and offerings” are collected in various Christian worship services. While some other Christians are also convinced that tithing is not a requirement for a believer in Christ.



The first mention of tithe in the Bible was in Genesis 14:20, Abraham gave a tenth of his spoils of war to Melchizedek King of Salem. Jacob also vowed to give a tenth of everything God give unto him after his meeting with God in Bethel.

Subsequently, God commanded the Jewish people, the children of Jacob to tithe when they reach the promised land.

A tenth of Israel’s seed, fruit, and flocks were to be given to the Lord (Lev. 27:30–32; Deut. 14:22–24; cf. 2 Chron. 31:5–6; Neh. 13:5, 12). A tenth is given to the Levites to support them since they have no inheritance among their people (Num. 18:21–24; cf. Neh. 10:38; 12:44), A tenth were given as the poor tithe (Deut. 14:28, 29). Those who pay tithe were promised blessing by God while those who didn’t tithe were threatened with a curse(Mal. 3:8–10).



With the examples above, it is clear that tithing was ordained by God under the Mosaic law and since we Christians operate under the grace and not the Mosaic, we have nothing to do with tithing.

Daddy Freeze, a controversial radio presenter once raised his voice against the payment of tithes in Nigerian church but he met with stern media backlash, with many Pastors as well as other Christians calling him heretic. However, in this article, I would argue why tithing isn't required or even encouraged for Christians today. I would explain my stance in order to give more biblical clarity to Christians.


Below are six points to make my opinion clear to the readers

1. Christians Are Not Under The Mosaic Covenant (Rom. 6:14–15; 7:5–6; Gal. 3:15–4:7; 2 Cor. 3:4–18).
Romans 6:14 KJV- "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace."


The commands stated in the Mosaic covenant of the Old Testament doesn't apply to believers. In the Bible passage above, Paul addresses believer with a clear message that believer are now bound by grace and not under the bondage of the law . It’s of a truth that the moral norms of the Old Testament still apply to Christians today, and we understand them from the law of Christ clearly stated in the New Testament, but tithing is not among these commands given through Christ in the New Testament

2. Abraham And Jacob Payment Of Tithes Are Not Normative Patterns.
Some people will argue that tithing is required of a believer because both Abraham and Jacob gave a tenth, and they both existed before the Mosaic covenant came in place. However, both examples doesn't clearly ascertain that tithing was done on a regular basis. Abraham’s gift to Melchizedek king of Salem and his victory over his enemies was a one-time event; there is no recorded evidence in the Bible that he gave God a tenth regularly


Jacob’s vowed to give a tenth to God after Jehovah promised to be with him and to keep him safe everywhere he goes. However, there is not historical backing to support that Christians must give God a tenth of their income.

3. Tithes Were Remitted To The Levites And Priests, But There Is No Place for Levites And Priests In The New Covenant.


Levites and priests were connected to the sacrificial system of the old covenant. Now according to the New Testament, all Christians are priests and Jesus the high priest. 1 Pet. 2:9; Rev. 1:6; 5:10; 20:6)

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 1 Peter 2:9 KJV

4.The Tithe Is Tied To The Jewish People And The Promised Land Of Israel Under The Mosaic Covenant.
Israel was supposed to celebrate a tithe every three years in Jerusalem.

1. The Levitical, or sacred tithe (Num. 18: 21, 24).

2. The tithe of the feasts (Deut. 14:22-27).

3. The tithe for the poor (Deut. 14:28, 29).

This requirement applies only to the Jewish nation and not to Christians today. It related to Jews who lived in the promise land of Israel. With the coming of Christ, the Jewish people are longer only the favorite people of God but every believer in Christ becomes God's favorite.

5. When Jesus Spoke About Tithe , It Was Before The Dawn Of The New Covenant
Some people always defend tithing by saying Jesus spoke about tithing and never condemned it (Matt. 23:23; Luke 11:42).

Matthew 23:23 KJV- Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

This argument appears strong, but it’s not persuasive enough to prove that Christians should adopt the practice.

Jesus spoke about tithing before he was crucified on the cross and subsequent resurrection. It was before the manifestation of the new covenant. He used tithing as an illustration when addressing pharisees and scribes. Jesus was born under the law and he kept the law(Galatians 4:4). The new covenant came into manifestation after resurrection of Christ, so Christians are not under the Mosaic law but under Grace.

Galatians 2:19 KJV - For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

6. Giving Generously Was Commanded In The New Testament But Payment Of Tithe Wasn't Mentioned.
Christians are instructed to give to the poor in the New Testament, they were not commanded to give “the poor tithe.” instead , believers are commanded to be generous givers to the needy (Acts 2:43–47; 4:32–37; 11:27–30; Gal. 2:10; 1 Cor. 16:1–4; 2 Cor. 8:1–9:15). If Christians were to follow the principle of the Old Testament tithing, there would be reference to the apostles collecting or distributing tithes in the New Testament.

Live generously, even though Christians are not biblically required to tithe, it does not allow Christians to live selfishly.

We as Christians are commanded to render support to those who are preaching the gospel (Luke 10:7; Tim. 5:17–18). And while we should enjoy the good things God gives us, we are also called to be generous to those in need (1 Tim. 6:17–19; 2 Cor. 8–9). Wealth can so easily become an idol, leading us to abandon the Lord.

The Scripture doesn’t command believers to give a tenth and since the Scripture is our rule and authority, we should not tithe

How Did The Tradition of Birthdays Begin?
Have you ever wondered where the celebration of birthdays started? In the simplest of terms, it’s a time for friends and family to come together and celebrate you, the anniversary of your birth, and another year of your life under your belt.

But there’s so much more to it than that.

It’s been constantly evolving throughout, turning into what we know it to be today. This widely used tradition started somewhere and that’s what we are looking to uncover here today.

We’ve pieced together the hypotheses of several historians, making this one huge piece of our culture a little bit more comprehensible.

Here’s what we know:

1. Birthdays didn’t begin until calendars were created.
Early civilizations had no way to keep track of time other than by using the moon, sun, or some other important event. This made it difficult for them to pay attention to the anniversary of a person’s birth.

As time went on, everyone realized that they all experienced the effects of aging, they just didn’t have a means to mark a special milestone for it.

It wasn’t until ancient people began taking note of the moon’s cycles that they began paying attention to the change in seasons as well. They also noticed this pattern repeated itself over and over again. They began marking these changes in time.

This is what bore the first calendars, which marked time changes and other special days. From this type of tracking system came the ability to celebrate birthdays and other significant events and anniversaries each year.

2. It all started with the Egyptians.
Scholars who study the Bible say that the earliest mention of a birthday was around 3,000 B.C.E. and was in reference to a Pharaoh’s birthday. But further study implies that this was not their birth into the world, but their “birth” as a god.

When Egyptian pharaohs were crowned in ancient Egypt, they were considered to have transformed into gods. This was a moment in their lives that became more important than even their physical birth.

Pagans, such as the ancient Greeks, believed that each person had a spirit that was present on the day of his or her birth. This spirit kept watch and had a mystic relation with the god on whose birthday that particular individual was born.

3. You can thank Greeks for all those birthday candles.
Gods and goddesses were a huge part of Greek culture. Greeks offered many tributes and sacrifices to appease these gods. The lunar goddess, Artemis, was no different.

As a tribute to her, the Greeks would offer up moon-shaped cakes adorned with lit candles to recreate the glowing radiance of the moon and Artemis’ perceived beauty. The candles also symbolized the sending of a signal or prayer. Blowing out the candles with a wish is another way of sending that message to the gods.

4. Birthdays first started as a form of protection.
It is assumed that the Greeks adopted the Egyptian tradition of celebrating the “birth” of a god. They, like many other pagan cultures, thought that days of major change, such as these “birth” days, welcomed evil spirits. They lit candles in response to these spirits almost as if they represented a light in the darkness. This implies that birthday celebrations started as a form of protection.

In addition to candles, friends and family would gather around the birthday person and protect them from harm with good cheers, thoughts, and wishes. They would give gifts to bring even more good cheer that would ward off evil spirits. Noisemakers were also used to scare away the unwanted evil.

5. The ancient Romans were the first to celebrate the birth of the common “man.”
This seems to be the first time in history where a civilization celebrated the birth of non-religious figures. Regular Roman citizens would celebrate the birthdays of their friends and family members. The government, however, created public holidays in honor of more famous citizens.

Any Roman turning 50 years old would receive a special cake baked with wheat flour, olive oil, grated cheese, and honey. But an important thing to note is that only men would experience this birthday celebration. Female birthdays were not celebrated until about the 12th century.

6. Birthdays were first considered to be a pagan ritual in Christian culture.
In Christianity, it is believed that all people are born with “original sin.” That, in combination with early birthdays being tied to pagan gods, led Christians to consider birthdays to be celebrations of evil. This lasted for the first few hundred years of the existence of the Christian Church.

It wasn’t until the 4th century that Christians abandoned that way of thinking and began celebrating the birth of Jesus, also know as Christmas. Celebrating the birth of Jesus was partly enacted to recruit those who already celebrated Saturnalia, the Roman holiday.

7. German bakers invented the birthday cake as we know it today.
At this point, birthdays had been celebrated around the world, even in China, where a child’s first birthday was more special than most.

Kinderfeste, which started in the late 18th century, was the name for a German birthday party that is closest to today’s style of parties. This party was held for German kids, or “kinder,” and featured a birthday cake adorned with candles.

Kids were given one candle atop the cake for each year they had been alive, plus one for the hope of living for at least one more year. Blowing out these candles while making a wish was a big part of these celebrations

Bible history is a specialised history concerning events that of importance to the Covenant between God and Israel.. There is no evidence that someone, somewhere didn't celebrate birthdays in Jerusalem same day as Herod.

2. Jesus was said to have been named and buried according to Jewish tradition.

3. The early church fathers established Hermits and many of them refused to marry like Paul. If the examples of early Christians are to be followed, convince the house how you are doing that.

As it is now, even then, celebration of birthdays is a personal choice. It doesn't affect God in anyway. This is pure hypocrisy.

Now allow me list a very few of those attributes and let us compare them with the attributes of any angel written in the bible.

1. In whose name do people come to pray? Jesus (Matthew 18:19-20). So do we pray in the name of angels? No. That means Jesus is not an angel.

2. Who gives life? Jesus (John 8:51). And from the bible, do angels give life? No. So Jesus is not angel.

3Who searches hearts and minds? Jesus (Revelation2:23). So do angels search the hearts and mind? No. So Jesus is not an angel.

4. Who has the right to forgive sin? Jesus ( Matthew 9:6)
Now, in the bible, has God at any point in time, given ,
authority to any angel to forgive the sins of men? No. So Jesus is not an angel.

5. Who is the Life? Jesus ( John 14:6). Has any angel been called the "life" in the bible? No. So Jesus is not an angel.

3. Birthday celebration have pagans root. According to funk & Wagnall’s standard dictionary of folk lore, mythology and legend, these celebrations originated from the belief that on a person's birthday, “evil spirit and influence have the opportunity to attack the celebrant” and that “the presence of the friends and expression of good wishes help to protect the celebrant".



*. The book "The lore of birthday" says that in the ancient times, birthday records were "essential for the casting of a horoscope” and remember, the reason God condemn the ancient city of Babylon was that it's inhabitants practiced astrology, which is a form of divination. ( Isaiah 47:11-15. ).

*. Based on “the mystic science of astrology" the book adds that " birthday candles, in folk belief, are endowed with special magic for granting wishes". The bible however condemn the use of magic, divination, etc. ( Deu18:14 ).


4. The early Christian's did not celebrate birthdays. the world book encyclopedia says that “they considered the celebration of anyone's birth to be a pagans custom.
