Enugu State Govt. invests N4.5bn to upgrade infrastructure


Enugu State Government says it will spend N4.5 billion to execute infrastructural projects in the 450 autonomous communities in the state, Commissioner for Information, Godwin Udeuhele said on Wednesday.
Briefing newsmen in Enugu on the outcome of the State Executive Council, Udeuhele said each of the communities would get N10 million worth projects.
The commissioner said that the move was to facilitate even development across communities in the state.
He said that the state government would immediately pay N5 million to all the autonomous communities for the execution of their choice projects.
Udeuhele said that the new projects were in addition to the 57 infrastructure development projects going on simultaneously in all the 17 local government areas of the state.
“The council approved a rolling plan of community development initiative of N10 million with an initial payment of N5 million that will start running this year to all the 450 autonomous communities.
“This is to enhance rural development and encourage community participation in infrastructural development. This is a new initiative of the state government.
“The first tranche will be paid this year and next year another will be paid. The primary purpose is to ensure that dividends of democracy touch all communities in the state.
“Each community will get their money and decide what they want to do with it,” he said.
Udeuhele said that the council also approved the release of N23. 6 million to Digital Security Technology for the building and installation of underground vandal proof battery cabinet.
The commissioner explained that the appliances were for street lights that were currently under attack by vandals.
He said that the state government had decided to install an 8metre high overhead vandal proof controller panel protection belt for the 34 street light stations in the state.
“An additional N45 million was also approved for the replacement of the 17 traffic light stations that were completely vandalized.
“The contractor will make a panel under the ground and get those batteries planted underneath, thereby, making it more difficult for intending vandals,” he said.
Udeuhele said that the council also approved the payment of additional N200 million being part of the debt owed the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
He said that the sum was in addition to the N100 million earlier paid to EEDC, adding that the EEDC was having issues with everybody and the state government were not an exception.
“This is a part payment for the settlement of government indebtedness to the company pending when the joint committee of the company and the government on reconciliation will submit their reports.
“Some government facilities were disconnected by EEDC for amount of money that was owed not only by this government but past governments.
“Now the government has agreed and released N300 million and there is a joint committee aimed at getting the actual amount the government owes the company,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EEDC has alleged that the successive governments in the state owed the company more than N2.5 billion.
Some customers of the company had on Friday trooped to the streets and marched to the state assembly calling for the eviction of the EEDC over what they described as unsatisfactory services.
The state assembly same day had an emergency sitting over an alleged ineffectiveness of the EEDC in the state.

FG to complete ongoing Federal road projects in Enugu state- Fashola

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has assured the people of Enugu State that the Federal Government will complete ongoing federal road projects in the area within 18 months.

Fashola made the pledge at the 9th mile axis of Enugu-Onitsha Road during an inspection tour of some ongoing federal roads projects in Enugu State on Saturday.

He said the Federal Government had taken steps to ensure that the federal roads underwent proper soil test.

He added that the roads would have solid drainage system, good soil basement filling and standard stone and asphalt gauging.

“We have fully re-mobilised contractors handling the rehabilitation of about six critical federal roads in Enugu State back to site, and for them to finish their projects.

“We are hopeful that within 14 to 18 months all the ongoing projects must have been completed for ease of movement on the roads and to reduce travel time for the people,’’ he said.

The minister said that the projects had already started stimulating the economy of the state through employment and the re-engagement of construction workers, “who today can send their children to school.

“Food vendors and local markets had witnessed more sales to put more money in the hands of our people; which would help better their lives.

“The resumption of these projects had created businesses and improved diesel supply, sand supply, granite supply, asphalt supply and cement supply businesses.

“Thus, it is a well-thought-out design of the Federal Government to re-boot the economy and get the country out of recession as fast as possible.’’

Fashola urged the residents and motorists to co-operate with the contractors to ensure speedy completion of the projects.

The minister also inspected ongoing work at the Umana-Ndiagu-Agba-Ebenebe-Amensea-Awka federal road.

The six federal roads undergoing rehabilitation are, Enugu-Port Harcourt road; 9th Mile-Enugu-Abakaliki road; Enugu-Nsukka-Obollo road, and the Iheamfume-Ikem-Obollo road.

Others are, the 9th Mile-Oji-Amensea road and the Umana-Ndiagu-Agba-Ebenebe-Amensea-Awka road. (NAN)

That road is udenu ring road, the road moves from ohom orba junction down to obollo afor. It covers about 8 communities most of which have never seen a Tared road in their history.

Enugu State Government has instituted a N60million annual traders’ empowerment scheme aimed at encouraging traders in the state.

Godwin Udeuhele, the Commissioner for Information, who addressed newsmen on Saturday in Enugu on the outcome of the State Executive Council Meeting, held on Friday night, said participation in the scheme was free.

Udeuhele said under the scheme, N5 million would be won monthly by registered traders, with each beneficiary going home with N50, 000.

“The Enugu State Traders’ Empowerment Scheme is a wonderful programme that tends to empower traders in the state free of charge.

“The annual amount to be won is N60 million. The sum of N5 million will be won every month with a winner going home with N50, 000,” he said.

The commissioner said that draws for the scheme would be conducted among members of the 37 identified market associations in the state on a rotational basis in major markets within the three senatorial districts.

“The commissioner for commerce has gone round all the markets in the state to identify 37 associations and got them registered. We have names of the registered traders.

“It is from the list we have that draws will be made. You cannot win it twice and nobody will get more than N50, 000,” he said.

Udeuhele said that the draws would be done by the National Lottery Commission, adding that the purpose was to encourage traders contribute more to the economy of the state.

He said that approval was also given for the re-construction of the Holy Ghost Cathedral/Mgbemene Link Road in Enugu to ease traffic congestion along Ogbette Main Market Road.

“It will also provide quick and easy access into the cathedral compound. The road was earlier awarded but was not done due to the high cost and government has decided to do it through direct labour.

“Approval was given for the release of N226.684 million for the construction of Ebonyi River Bridge, along Ugwuogo Nike road to create a major link into one of the largest food producing communities in the state,” he said.

The commissioner said that when completed, the project would enhance the standard of living in the affected areas and make food affordable in the state.
