Politics / APC Records Zero Votes At Ekweremadu’s Polling Unit by DinoMelaye(m): 10:40am On Feb 24, 2019
The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has convincingly delivered his polling unit to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with the All Progressives Congress (APC) recording zero votes in the presidential, senatorial and House of Representatives elections.

Mr Ekweremadu, who voted at polling unit 003 at Amachala Primary School, Mpu Ward, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, polled 490 votes while his main challenger, Juliet Ibekaku-Nwaugwu of the APC, scored zero.

The polling unit, which has a total of 1,287 registered voters, was divided by INEC into polling units 003A and 003B.

At the polling unit 003A where Mr Ekweremadu voted, he scored 265 votes and recorded 225 votes at the polling unit 003B, totalling 490.

In the presidential poll, while Mr Muhammadu Buhari of the APC scored zero, the candidate of the AAC and publisher of Sahara Reporters newspaper, Mr Omoyele Sowore, scored one vote.

PDP’s candidate for the House of Representatives in the constituency, Toby Okechukwu, scored more votes than other candidates at the polling unit including Mr Ekweremadu. Mr Okechukwu scored 492, two votes ahead of the senator.

Okowa Campaign AD

PREMIUM TIMES reported on Saturday Mr Ekweremadu’s complaints about an alleged shortfall of ballot papers and result sheets in some of the polling units in about two local government areas in the district.

Mr. Ekweremadu, who is seeking re-election into the Senate for the fifth time, had said in spite of the one week extension, lapses were identified in some of the units in his Enugu West Senatorial District.

Shortly, after voting, Mr Ekweremadu told reporters that his contacts across some wards confirmed the lapses, but said he had complained to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said; “Specifically, I made contacts with Udi Local Government Area and I was told the ballot papers for Senate at Amaupe Ward is yet to arrive and in Uduma Ward 1 and 2, the result sheets are not available. Also in Umuabi ward, they are still looking for result sheets.

“Also in Nnewe Ward 1 and Achunu Ward 3 ballot papers are not complete. But in places where they have started such as this place where I voted it, though they have challenges of card readers initially, you can see now it is very orderly and they have been able to move seamlessly.

“I also learnt that the security situation is still fine and we can only hope that as we move forward it can be sustained,” he added.

Politics / Dont Be Afraid Of Violence, Go Out And Vote, Buhari Tells Nigerians by DinoMelaye(m): 7:31am On Feb 22, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has advised Nigerians not to be afraid of violence as they perform the civic responsibility tomorrow.

Nigerians will elect their leaders in the rescheduled general election beginning on Saturday.

Mr Buhari is running for a second term in office on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

His major challenger, Atiku Abubakar, is of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The president had earlier in the week ordered security agencies to shoot-at-sight anyone found snatching ballot box.

The statement has been condemned by critics of the administration who opined that the president was installing fear on the minds of the people.

Urging the people not to be afraid, the president said security measures has been taken to ensure a free, fair and credible elections.

“Do not be afraid of rumours of violence and unrest,” Buhari told Nigerians in his National Broadcast Friday morning monitored by POLITICS TIMES.

“Our security agencies have worked diligently to ensure that adequate security measures are in place.

“As your President, I hereby ask all Nigerians with voting cards to participate in defining the future of our nation by exercising your democratic rights tomorrow. I urge you to go out and vote,” the president said.

Meanwhile, his party has said the Nigerian leader will congratulate whoever emerges winner if he is defeated at the poll.

Politics / Buhari Will Concede If Defeated, Congratulate Winner, Says APC by DinoMelaye(m): 6:39pm On Feb 21, 2019
The All Progressive Congress (APC) has said President Muhammadu Buhari, if defeated in the rescheduled presidential election, will concede defeat and congratulate who ever wins the race.

The ruling party however said for such to happen the process that will produce the winner must be free, fair and credible.

The above information is coming from the campaign council of the ruling APC when its deputy director-general, Waziri Bulama, addressed newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

Although Mr Bulama said it’s impossible for the party to loose the election he said the electorate has the final say.

“The outcome of this election, if free, fair and credible would be accepted by President Muhammad Buhari and by the party,” the deputy DG said.

“If we win, which is very, very likely we will congratulate Nigerians for having participated in a free, fair and peaceful election. That is number one. Number two, we are not even going to celebrate or over celebrate because an election success of President Muhammadu Buhari is another burden on him and this man would want to do more than he has done.

“So, we will humbly thank Nigerians for given us their votes for another four years to build on what we have done. But in the event Nigerians decided, in a free, fair and credible election to give their votes to another person, President Muhammadu Buhari will still thank Nigerians and will call the person that eventually won the election and congratulate him,” Bulama said.

Politics / Onnoghen: It’s Either You Lied Or Buhari Is Not In Charge, Obasanjo Tells Osinba by DinoMelaye(m): 5:17pm On Jan 20, 2019
Olusegun Obasanjo, former president, has tackled Yemi Osinbajo, vice president, over his claim on the controversial trial of Walter Onnoghen, Nigeria’s Chief Justice.

Mr Onnoghen accused of failing to declare some assets traced to him was hurriedly arraigned before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on behalf of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The speed at which the case was rushed trumped up suspicions in some quarters alleging the administration is out to oust the top jurist in preparation of plans to rig the 2019 general election slated to commence next month.

While a Federal High Court has halted commencement of the trial, the government is not leaving any stone unturned in a bid to oust the Chief Justice. While ordering his accounts to be frozen, there is a fresh litigation praying for his removal from office.

Absolving the administration of any wrongdoing, Osinbajo claimed President Buhari is not aware of the trial, this the former president claimed was false.

“I must tell you in clear terms that President Muhammadu Buhari, his whole approach is that institutions should just do their work, I can tell you for a fact that he did not even know about this until Saturday evening,” the number two citizen said at a one day conference organised by Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN) on Wednesday.

For the former president, Osinbajo is either lying or that Buhari is not in charge of his administration as alleged in some quarters.

“President Buhari and his hatchet men in the coming election think that the judiciary must be primed in their favour,” Obasanjo said on Sunday in an open letter titled “Point for Concern and Action.”

“Hence, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, has been harassed and prosecuted for non-declaration of his assets without following the Constitution and the law, just to make him conform or set him aside for a Buhari man to take over or act, as President Buhari and his people believe no stone should be left unturned to rig Buhari in.

“It seems to be a ploy to intimidate the judiciary as a whole in preparation for all election cases that will go before them.

“Where and how will all these stop? Typically, with overwhelming outrage and condemnation, we are told that the Presidency denied knowledge of the action. But the Vice-President told us that the President knew of the action on Saturday night for everything that has been prepared for Monday morning.

“Haba VP, it doesn’t happen that way. Nobody should take such measure against any of the four in hierarchy below the President or any of his ministers without his knowledge and indeed his approval. But if that can happen to the Chief Justice of the Federation, the fifth man in the hierarchy of government, without the knowledge let alone the approval of the President, then it speaks for the type of government we have which means the President is not in charge let alone being in control and no Nigerian must take anything for granted.

“We are all unsafe and insecure under such an administration. And enough of it! Buhari’s apologists will not stop at anything to try to cover up his administration’s inadequate performance and character.

“A constitutional liberal democracy cannot thrive without an independent and insulated judiciary from the executive and the legislature. Nigerians must wake up and stop these acts of wanton desperation tantamount to mental incapacity to run the affairs of Nigeria wholesomely.

“Life and living are anchored on trust. But if I trust you and you deceive, cheat or disappoint me the first time, it is shame on you. However, if I allow you to do so the same thing for me the second time, I do not only have myself to blame, I must be regarded as a compound fool,” he added.

Politics / Amina Zakari Should Resign – Obasanjo by DinoMelaye(m): 4:44pm On Jan 20, 2019
Olusegun Obasanjo, former president, has called on Amina Zakari, the newly appointed head of election collation centre for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2019 elections, to step aside as the nation elects its leaders next month.

The appointment of Mrs Zakari has drawn condemnation from Nigerians including the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). She is said to be related to President Muhammadu Buhari, who seeks a second term in office on the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

The former president who supported the incumbent president during the 2015 general election has parted ways with the Nigerian leader. Obasanjo accused Buhari of incompetence, nepotism among others.

Although the presidency has denied the claim that the INEC official is related to the president by blood, calls for her to step down continues to rent the air.

The latest is from Mr Obasanjo who had described himself as an alarm raiser. He said the lady, having being related to the president by marriage, should step aside as she could not be trusted.

“Amina Zakari has become too controversial a figure to be able to give assurance of free, fair and credible election for INEC,” the former president said on Sunday in an open letter titled “Point for Concern and Action.”

“President Buhari and her family have declared that there is no blood relationship but there is relationship through marriage and that is more than enough for the good lady to step aside.

“A judge does not sit in judgement over a case once he or she becomes a cause for controversy or one side in the case has strongly objected to the judge.

“Madam Amina Zakari should, in honour, stay out and not be seen as a source of contamination of the election. Otherwise, it will be difficulty to deny the rumour that she is being assigned to Collation Centre for one duty only – to write out figures that are not results of the voting in the field on fake results sheets without water mark or on genuine results sheets which she will have access to as a Commissioner,” Obasanjo said.

While passing a vote of no confidence on the electoral body, the former president said it’s never to late to make amends.

“Amina Zakari is not the only Commissioner that can be in the Collation Centre. Let the INEC Chairman act boldly and impartially and prove his absolute neutrality and responsiveness to contribute to make the election peacefully free, fair and credible. His integrity needs to be transparently demonstrated,” he said.

“We should remember that there had been reports of INEC sponsored rigging in the past, and also with INEC officials through collation and with officials being put in party coordinators’ dresses and working for the political party favoured by INEC and also putting the dresses of other parties on INEC-favoured parties and police uniforms on INEC-favoured parties to rig all the elections for the favoured party. Like all of us, INEC knows all these and it should devise means to make sure they do not happen. But will they? One way will be to only allow card readers to be means of authenticating voters and where there is no such authentication, it should mean no voting.

“The second is to use only identity cards with watermarks issued by INEC itself to party officials only for identification of political party coordinators, officials and agents and not political parties dresses or arm and wrist bands which anybody can wear for purposes of identification on election duty or function. Both the Presidency and the National Assembly must so far be commended for adequately providing funding as confirmed by INEC, and therefore funding cannot be an excuse for poor performance by INEC,” the elderstatesman said.

Politics / Atiku Fulfils Threat, Boycotts Presidential Debate by DinoMelaye(m): 7:46pm On Jan 19, 2019
Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has carried out his threat of boycotting the debate for presidential candidates.

The former vice president popularly known as Atiku had threatened to withdraw if President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress (APC) failed to turn up for the parley.

Atiku who later backtracked and stormed the event premises, reversed his position on finding out that Mr Buhari is absent.

Five candidates including Buhari and Atiku were expected to participate.

Those slugging it out at the debate includes: Oby Ezekwesili – Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Fela Durotoye – Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) and Kingsley Moghalu – Young Progressives Party (YPP).

As at press time, POLITICS TIMES could not independently verify why the president was absent, although his party had hinted of his possible withdrawal.

Atiku on Saturday restated his earlier claim that he won’t participate in the debate without the president absent.

“We came here for a Presidential debate, not a candidacy debate, and I, Atiku Abubakar cannot challenge or question an administration where the man at the helm of the affairs of the nation is not present to defend himself or his policies,” Atiku said in a tweet.
