Literature › Nairaland Book Of The Month (1/2)--as Deep As The Sea By Serah Iyare by Divepen1(mod):
This is to encourage and discuss books by our own...

This place should and would only be invaded with talks about this book and the characters. Any book chosen must have been published online or offline.

AS DEEP AS THE SEA By Serah Iyare

Promise Daodu was posted to Abuja for her NYSC programme, but, circumstances beyond her control made her to desert the capital city and return home.
She started afresh in Lagos but the ghost of her past returned to haunt her incessantly, leaving no room for escape.
The desire for freedom consumed her every thought. Will she ever be free?

To start with, your call for criticism sounded like a confrontation. I'm not sure I'm bold enough to stand your prowess. I'm writing firstly as a reader; secondly as a lover of Literature; thirdly as a writertainer; fourthly, on behalf of everyone that might assume you are putting on a wall in your post.
Your story is smeared with a lot of adjectives that are disfiguring the beautiful imagination you're pushing us into. More so, your tense usage is another thing you should deal with. You were oscillating between the past and present tense in your tenses, especially the auxiliary verbs.

Lest I forget, avoid abbreviations like plague. And try to ladden the write-ups with enough things to hooks us.

Try reading on places you can hook your readers. I wrote a version of it here:

Well done. I'm loving the tales. Except from for some few punctuations and constructions mistakes, you're really doing good here. Meanwhile, there was a place you wrote out a conversation between some neighbours as regarding Mama Akin's call for 'no credit'. Although I guessed you were referring to her neighbours, an average reader might conclude that the brawl was between you and another character in the story.

Also, you are beginning to turn the story into a first person reporter. The story had suddenly moved from the character, to that of his neighbours'. Suddenly, we're beginning to see more of Mama Akin's story than that of anyone's. Except the story is all about her, it is advisable you start compelling the readers with things the character was forced to do. Probably, you open us to how the character exploited Mama Akin's behaviour or Mama Mustapha's own. You can also make the character a victim. But if the character would continually assume the position of the 1st person reporter, then let the focus remain on one character. If you're doing this, put this at the back of your mind: here, you're like Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes stories, you only know what you see. Nice one.

Divepen1, how is book sales on Okadabooks? Can one make N10k month from book sales if you have like a dozen books on the platform?
It's like normal self published books, hard or soft copy. All depends on your marketing skills.

Am counterplating publishing on platforms like Amazone .pls, how do i go about it. I will also be grateful if any one can give me the email of any publisher to see how I go from their.

Your suggestions will go a long way in helping my writing career. Thanks in anticipation of your suggestions.

But in case any of them do not work

Try self publishing.
Use Nigerian Okadabooks, Smashwords or Amazon

Amazon won't allow you to post in on other store

But Smashwords would distribute it to Kobobooks, Noble and Barnes etc

If you now choose self-publishing, use this checklist.

Literature › First Review On My Unpublished ' Grabbing The Hot Gate' by Divepen1(mod):
So, I got my first Review on the draft of 'Grabbing The Hot Gate' from Oshafi Gloryanna...

Here it is,

General Observation: I enjoyed the book. Before reading this book, I tried to decipher what the book might be about from the title. I couldn't come up with much, so I had no choice than to start reading. I'd honestly say even from the first pages, I couldn't put the book down. Seeing as it deals with the paranormal, it was quite intriguing (and possibly scary as I had to skip some parts where spells were being cast).
Your bringing together of the different characters, developing them and also bringing or resolving their parts is also applaudable. Although, being set in Fortune City, Nigeria I wondered why all of them had English first names.

Writing: Your writing style, choice of words, humor and wit is also quite good. I laughed out loud at some weird proverbs conversations and character traits. There were also excellent "foreign" writing patterns (I mean like stuff you would expect to see in a foreign novel). However, when you were resolving Stella's character, I find the parts where she became a Christian a bit too easy, especially seeing how powerful a witch she used to be. I expected a very tough battle between the world of Lucifer, Heetah and her new found religion especially that bathroom scene.
Again when I started reading the book I was kind of led to believe that prior to this book the was a series... this is because you wrote with the assumption that I (the reader) already knew about Fortune City, Black Town, GreenCity and it's occultic activities. Reading further though, I acclamatized, so I guess it's okay.
Conclusion and resolve of book climax: It was a lovable ending for Gladys. But I think you can do better with Stella and Japheth. Stella was a star of the show. The ending sort of put Gladys in her spotlight. And the part where Japheth finally asks Miry Miry out..it's kinda too "touch and go", like he had been hesistant to ask her since. You now used one paragraph... Lol. Add more flavor to that part na. Lol.

****

I hope y'all are getting ready.

Literature › How To Publish With Parresia Publishers by Divepen1(mod): 9:20am On Nov 17, 2017
Parresia Publishers is one of the new TradoPublishing houses that have stepped out of the norm of regular printing presses and publishing houses, and have made books fun for readers. They publish strictly publish five fictions per year. Some of their authors include Ifesinachi O. Okpagu, Author of 'The Domestication of Munachi'; Molara Wood, Author of 'Indigo'; Helon Habila, Author of 'TheChibokGirls'.
Although many people are desirous to know how to publish their books with them, they don't know how to go about it. This post would enlighten you on how to do that.
1. Read Their Books: Not necessarily all. Try to read their works. If you can get your hands on the summaries of their books, do that also. It would give you a chance to know if your book can be published with them.
2. Your synopsis: Send Synopsis not blurb or Teaser: Synopsis is what the editors read after they have read some parts of your novel. The synopsis gives them details on the main theme, a major character, and the major conflict.
Whereas, a teaser is just to catch the readers’ attention. For example:
The Enchanted Swans by Christy Nicholas
Fionnuala must care for her three brothers while learning to live under an evil curse. Will she find a way to break the spell, or will they remain swans, tethered to three places for nine hundred years?
Meanwhile, Blurbs are quotes from other people about your book.
Parresia Publisher would only accept a synopsis, and ensure it is not more than a page ( Why will it be more than a page, are you writing another novel).
3.Send an Excerpt: Along with the synopsis, send the first 3 chapters of your work in a word document.
4. Format Your Work: Use the following format for any work you want to send to them;
Double spacing
justify to the left.
5. Author's Biography: Be concise.
6. Send it to editor@parresia.com.ng
7. Now, wait for like 6 weeks to get a reply. Another chance to write another great book.
Have any issue, let's hear from you.

while the second one is in its 31st thousand words. I wanted to make the latter as short as possible. So thanks for this timely advice.
