Hello House, I have been studying this business recently. Something baffles me though? Why are you all so focused on selling unprocessed cashew nuts to India and Vietnam, who process and the sell to US and EU? What am I missing in the logic that does not favour processing to meet EU and US standards?

because its d nature of nigerians to go the easy way. They dont want to go thru d stress of processing it. In addition, the machine for processing it requires some good money to acquire it, and most farmers cant afford it, a partner company in china sells and ships to nigeria.

i dont know why pple take delight in greedily inflating prices of local commodities, we discourage foreign buyers to go buy from other african countries, its wrong and its greed that makes dealers sell commodities in d local market using international price. The govt shuld establish an agency that will regulate d prices of agro products. The greed of we... nigerians is the bane of nigeria's progress.

Because of our antecedents of being good at supplementing ground products with other stuffs, one tends to be cautious. Should producers of products such as ONGA go into this, it would fly easily because they already have the brand name but a small holder who can assure quality and certified by the regulatory body can at the first entrance focus on student communities and with packs of 50gms which can easily be re-constituted into tomato paste by whisking it with hot water. Honestly, if sum1 with available funds start grinding tomato to powder, if its well packaged and probably approved by SON agency, with solid promo/advert on TV to back it up, it wil sell, people wil appreciate it. I tell ya my brother. It is only in 9ja that you would cook jolly rice with 50naira dried ground pepper and the jolly rice would not be hot "pepperish" in your mouth. Why? Because more than half of the dried ground pepper have been mixed with red grounded kolanut !

my broda, u are damn right. There is a pepper called "cameroon pepper", try ask iya basirah in ur area, its so pepperish, thats what i use for cooking. Its sold for #50. Well, we are supposed to patronize our nigerian product, but we nigerians are wicked. Mixing pepper with kolanut powder. I tire 4 we nigerians.

Before i forget to ask, whats the price of tomato in kwara and kogi? Do we have any1 with info from dat end.

The challenge is that ground tomato is totally alien to most Nigerian housewives. So, unless you have a fair amount of resources to push this new product and convince people to buy, this is probably not a product most small scale Nairaland farmers can rush into.


Besides, in the Nigerian context, there is something about ground dry tomato that will leave me, and I suspect many others, wondering what else is inside that brown polythene bag other than tomato This is Nigeria. People adulterate everything. Nigerians can easily add some funny 'additives' to bulk up the weight.

At least with raw tomatoes, people see and know exactly what they are buying.

Not all ideas are easily transferable to Nigeria. That's not to say this cant work, but, hmmm....


I think this will only catch on if buyers are confident about the providence of the product.

i just got info from my partner in sokoto, a small basket of tomato is currently sold @ #3,500. And the basket is between 10kg-15kg.

If your use our suckers which is new improve hybrid suckers that produce two bunches on each sucker.

These will give you 2000 bunches of plantain.
