Medical doctors have said that Widal test, a popular laboratory investigation prescribed by many hospitals for the diagnosis of typhoid in Nigeria, is no longer valid for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of the disease. According to the experts who spoke to our correspondent on Monday, 70 per cent of typhoid cases treated in Nigeria are as a result of misdiagnosis. To accurately diagnose typhoid, a General Physician, Dr. James Atanda, noted that in addition to other clinical evaluations, patients must have their fecal and sometimes blood culture tests done. “Typhoid is an illness you cannot just diagnose from a Widal test. It is not a valid test for diagnosing typhoid but many Nigerians don’t know this. The diagnosis of the disease involves a lot of clinical parameters and tests, including a culture of the patients’ waste products.”Atanda said. The Medical Director of Daysprings Hospitals, Ikotun, Lagos, Dr. Samuel Adebayo, also raised the alarm that many Nigerians had been made to believe that prolonged fever or malaria infection was typhoid. According to the physician, typhoid, an enteric fever that affects the intestine and the guts occurs when the bacteria ‘Salmonella Typhi’ or its other specie gains entrance into the body through the drinking of unhygienic water or unhygienic food preparation. He maintained that the disease could only be diagnosed after a thorough clinical examination and consideration of the patients’ history. Adebayo said, “There is no direct symptom of typhoid. All symptoms are suggestive. Some typhoid cases do not even show in the Widal test that is being used by quacks to diagnose the disease. It is dangerous to use these results to treat a patient for typhoid. Most doctors are aware of this, especially those who work in teaching hospitals that is why we don’t use it. “Patients also want to hear that they have typhoid. I have had to convince patients who believed that they had typhoid even after thorough clinical evaluations suggested that they did not have it.” Also, the Medical Director, Sanomens Hospital, Ejigbo, Lagos, Dr. Marcus Eruaga, said it was high time the public was enlightened on the fact that Widal test was not a conclusive test for the diagnosis of the disease as it was prone to error due to the complexity of the test results. Eruaga said, “The Widal test is laden with errors, but the public carry it as evidence. Some conditions could increase one’s titre value from the Widal test. The result is nothing without a medical examination. It does not mean you have active typhoid,” he added. Speaking on the consequences of wrong diagnosis, Adebayo noted that many Nigerians with serious illnesses had been sent to their early graves due to self or wrong medication. He said, “Some patients have died from liver and kidney failures because they were told that they had typhoid. If you ask them who confirmed that they had typhoid, you get replies like ‘my neighbour’, ‘the chemist’, or ‘my mother’. It is always a little too late for them when they realise that the symptoms they were treating was of another ailment.” Eruaga, however, noted that in order to check the confusion clouding the diagnosis of typhoid in the country, the public should be enlightened through advertorials and stiffer penalties should be meted out to health workers who dabbled into areas beyond their specialty. “Typhoid is not prolonged malaria. It is caused by different organisms. It is only a doctor that can determine a fever typical of typhoid or malaria. Meeting with an expert is inevitable. You cannot put the cart before the horse,” he added. http://punchng.com/widal-test-not-valid-for-typhoid-diagnosis-doctors-2/ |

Ejeba Efe Michael (born February 25, 1993) popularly known as Efe Ejeba or simply Efe, is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter, actor and reality television show star. Efe is the most popular Big Brother Naija 2017 housemate, having over 60% of fans compare with the other housemates. Efe ‘Based On Logistics’ as he is fondly called by viewers has so far competed himself in the Big Brother Naija House, staying clear from all. Kinds of drama. Despite his Nose picking habit, the Delta State-Born, Jos-based Rapper has taken everyone by surprise with the supports from viewers. After being nominated for possible eviction, Efe pulled an incredible 39.9% 58/59% out of 100% to stay in the Big Brother Naija House. He hails from Delta state, Nigeria (with his family-root from Warri). As a rapper, Efe musical style is referred to as pigin-english rap. Efe is one of the housemates in the 2017 Big Brother Naija television shows. Efe moved to Lagos because it is “where it all happens’’ and worked his way up to earn recognition. Studying isn’t one task, it’s many. You may need to memorize facts or just understand the basics. You might need a broad conceptual base, or just skills. To add even more variety, each person has different learning styles and preferences. No one tool is the right one. But with 10 here, you’re bound to find something that might help. Note: I realize this article is fairly long, so you may want to bookmark it to finish it later 1) Visualization The idea here is that you want to put abstract information into a picture. If you are struggling to understand a concept, visualization is a good technique to start with. 2) Rote Memorization I’m not a huge fan of this method, but sometimes brute force is required. Rote memorization involves pounding information into your brain by repeating it continually. Works best when the information is arbitrary and fact-based, so applications won’t go beyond simple memory. 3) Interlinking Take two ideas and ask yourself how they relate. They can be ideas within a specific field (short roads) or between two completely different fields (freeways). By doing this you create a road-map for traveling between information in your brain. 4) Metaphor Take a more complex idea and compare it to a simpler one. When learning computer programming, I found it helpful to look at a function like a pencil sharpener. A parameter was a dull pencil, inside processes sharpened and returned a sharp pencil. Some metaphors have limited applications while others can be used for deep understanding. 5) Diagram Draw it out. I love using diagrams for sorting large pieces of information. When I used to write computer programs fairly heavily, my desktop would have pieces of paper with hastily scratched diagrams. I consider creating a diagram to be the upgraded version of visualization. 6) Fluid Notes Most people take notes in a linear fashion, writing one statement after the next. Fluid notes may look less organized, but involves you drawing connections between ideas and writing in all directions across the page. Remember the point of note taking is to encourage learning, not just record what was said. 7) Acronyms A bit more efficient than rote memorization is to use mnemonics. Acronyms simplifying memorized information are a great way to do this. When I used to lifeguard, I had memorized all sorts of acronyms for various procedures such as RED or ABC. Make up your own acronyms to store arbitrary info. Link MethodThis is an advanced memory technique. I’ve found it works surprisingly well, but it takes longer to set up and requires practice if you want to do it quickly. The basic idea is that you link two ideas together by forming a bizarre picture that involves both of them. If I wanted to memorize a grocery list that had apples, milk and beans, my goal would be to create two images that linked apples to milk and milk to beans. The first could be a picture of a giant apple milking a cow. The second could be a milk container that poured baked beans. 9) Peg Method A variation of the link method, this one helps you memorize numbers. Instead of linking two pictures together, you use a system of phonetics to remember all the digits. From that you create short words and sentences to encode numbers. This article isn’t enough to fully explain the technique, but a Google search should give more depth if you’re interested. 10) Retracing Another technique that works well with holistic learning is retracing. Basically this involves you starting with one concept in your class. From that you find a relationship between that idea and another idea. You continue doing this path until you get back where you started or reach a dead end. With these few points of mine, hope you were able to grab one or two methods. http://www..ng/education/10-tricks-to-study-better-faster-and-with-less-stress-a-must-read |
President of Pentecostal Sanctuary Bible Ministries, Prophet Sunday Iyunade is of the opinion that those convicted of corruption should be welcomed into the church. Speaking recently at a Press conference to herald the church’s 21st anniversary/15th convention in Ijebu-Ode, the cleric described the church as the only place where ex-convicts could be refined by the word of God. “A lot of you have been criticising the Church for accepting corrupt leaders. Where else will they hear the truth if not in the Church? “It is only the religious bodies that can give them a course to feel guilty of whatever crime they have comitted. They may pay offerings, tithes and even do thanksgiving, they will surely be told the truth they need to hear,” he argued. Prophet Sunday said: “We need to pray for political stability as there will be threats to democracy. We need to seriously pray for our governments.” While highlighting the shortcomings of the government, the prophet lamented that the Treasury Single Account (TSA) has killed the Nigerian economy. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/corrupt-politicians-welcomed-church-cleric/ |
It is a rigorous activity. Most overseas scholarships are highly competitive and each have its unique eligibility criteria before one can be considered for the awards. As a promising student with the dreams of studying overseas on one of the numerous awards, you must have certain documents at your disposal including; -Academic Transcript -Bachelor degree certificate -International passport -Letters of employment to show proof of work experience in that field you are applying for -Proof of English language proficiency eg IELTS, TOEFL, PTE -A personal statement or statement of motivation Some scholarship bodies require that you forward an application to the school of your chosen course and be admitted first. Lastly, you need God's favour to win a scholarship as there are thousands out there seeking the same awards. Wishing you all the best as you try your luck. - |
A Special Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi, Lagos, on Saturday remanded 13 students of the University of Lagos in Kirikiri Prisons pending their bail application. The police arraigned the students on a two-count charge of unlawful invasion and disruption of activities. The accused, standing trial before Chief Magistrate P.E Nwaka, are alleged to have engaged in unlawful invasion of TVC Television in Lagos. They all pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge. The magistrate, who ordered that the accused be remanded, adjourned the case till April 6, for a determination of their bail. The accused are: Femi Adeyeye, Toni Aina, Kodri Yaya, Asimi Oladime, Ismahim Olalekan, Segun Okesola, Abdulazeez Soneye, Idris Abogunloko, and Muyiwa Olaniyi. Others are: Toheed Oladimeji, Joseph Akanni, Lukumon Olusegun, and Abiodun Agbeniyi. The Police prosecuting counsel, CSP Effiong Asuquo, Officer in Charge of Legal Unit, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 31. He said that the accused engaged in a riotous invasion of TVC Television station, protesting an alleged rustication of a student. According to him, the students also invaded the main campus of the University of Lagos, Akoka, and disrupted normal activities in the institution. The prosecutor told the court that the invasion by the students was simply a ploy to stall the commencement of the institution’s semester examination scheduled to begin on April 3. He said that the offence contravened the provisions of section 168 (1) (d), and section 2 of the Criminal Law, Laws of Lagos State, 2015. http://www..ng/news/13-unilag-students-sent-kirikiri-prisons-guess-read |

Some people have given up on the Nigerian police when it comes to their security, probably because of previous experiences. Policemen are human and sometimes give in to the demands of their weak bodies. You just cannot cheat nature. Some have been caught on camera sleeping on duty but can you blame them? These men work round the clock to secure lives and properties. NAIJ.com brings you photos of Nigerian police officers sleeping on duty. Every year, approximately 1.9 million Nigerian school leavers sit for compulsory entrance exam into 150 public and private universities in the country. Higher institutions can only accept about 600,000 students. Add that to the poor perception about Nigerian education system, then it’s no surprise that abroad is the destination for many Nigerian students seeking quality higher education. So where do most Nigerian students go to study? In a recent study (2016), UNESCO revealed statistics of countries around the world that attract the most Nigerian students. It referred to Nigerian students that are enrolled in a part-time, full-time and distance learning undergraduate and postgraduate programme abroad. Below are the top 10 countries for Nigerian students to study abroad according to UNESCO research in ascending order. study abroad nigeria10. Russian Federation Nigerians represent one of the numerous groups of all foreign students studying in the Eastern European countries of Russia and Ukraine. Currently, more than 3300 Nigerian students are studying in Ukraine. Also, with the Bilateral Education Agreement between Nigeria and Russia, through the Federal Ministry of Education, the number of Nigerian students studying in Russia is gradually increasing over the past few years. UNESCO placed the figure at 777 Nigerian students studying in Russia in 2016. 9. Hungary Hungary according to the most recent UNESCO survey is gradually becoming a destination country for foreign education. Three quarters of international students arriving in Hungary come from only ten countries, while one quarter of the students arrive from another 100 countries. One of these ten countries include Nigeria. Hungary has attracted more than a thousand Nigerian students owing to it’s sophisticated medical program. The University of Debrecen is one of the best and widely-known schools in the country and has over 700 Nigerian students, more than half of that number undertaking courses in the medical field. 8. United Arab Emirates Universities in UAE have been featured in world university ranking. In addition, a number of highly ranked universities based in other countries have branch campuses in the UAE. These include branch campuses run by Australia’s University of Wollongong, the UK’s Middlesex University and the USA’s Michigan State University. Of more than 200 international branch campuses in the world in 2016, 41 were located in UAE, making UAE the home to more branch campuses than any other countries in the world. This is as part of the ambition of the Emirates, in particular Abu Dhabi and Dubai, to become educational hubs, without compromising quality. About 1,755 Nigerian students were reported studying in UAE in 2016. 7. Saudi Arabia You may be surprised to find Saudi Arabia in the list. But it will interest you to know that, there were 1,915 Nigerian students reported studying in Saudi Arabia in 2016. Arab States; Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are making efforts to recruit students from abroad. These 3 countries hosted 4% of the global share of mobile students. 6. South Africa In terms of internationalization and collaboration with foreign institutions, which are major requirements for successful evaluation and ranking of high institutions, South African universities are leading other African unis. The country attracted 32% of mobile students from sub-Saharan Africa in 2016 and is fast becoming a study destination for Nigerian students, with a reported population of 2,525 students in 2016. One down side (apart from the recent xenophobic attacks on other Africans) according to this article by a Nigerian student who went for postgraduate studies in South Africa, is that non South African students struggle to access scholarships despite all kinds of local and international funding available in South Africa. 5. Canada Canadian universities and colleges are recognized for high standard for education, variety of program and friendliness to international students. UNESCO reported 3,257 Nigerian students studying in Canada in 2016. According to Ambassador Perry John Calderwood, Canadian High Commissioner in Nigeria, more than 6,000 Nigerian students were studying in Canadian universities in 2014. He also said that Nigeria has become the 8th largest source of foreign students in Canada. There are available Scholarships to study in Canada. 4. Malaysia The Malaysian government has set the ambitious goal to become the world’s sixth largest education exporter by 2020. As a result, the Malaysian higher education sector is rapidly advancing, making it a popular study choice for international students. According to Vanguard News, there are about 13000 Nigerian students in Malaysian universities. However, there have been several reported cases of Nigerian students being marginalized in this country. Constant intimidation, harassment and illegal arrests by Malaysian authorities. Such cases resulted to an open letter to President Jonathan by Nigerian students in Malaysia, to intervene on their behalf. But it’s still a study destination for 13,000 Nigerians due to its low cost of living, relatively low tuition fees and global recognition of academic qualification. The Malaysian Government also offers scholarships to its international students. 3. United States The US has some of the best schools in the world, with quality education and tons of extra-curricular activities. It’s no doubt why it’s the second country in the list for Nigerian students. In 2014, the United States Embassy noted that 7,318 Nigerian students were studying in more than 700 universities and colleges in the US, at undergraduate and graduate levels. According to Mrs Jennifer Onyeukwu, Head Education USA Advising Centre (EAC), 80 percent of the Nigerian students who left to study in US in 2014 were given partial and full scholarships by the schools. Six students received the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship of $311,140 each annually for 4 years. 2. Ghana In a public lecture by Lamido Sanusi, former CBN governor, he said, “although there are no comprehensive data on the number of Nigerian students abroad, recent data have shown that there are about 71,000 Nigerian students in Ghana paying about US$1 billion annually as tuition fees and upkeep, as against the annual budget of US$751 million for all Nigerian federal universities”. This number of students reported by the former CBN governor is wide apart from the UNESCO report of 13,919 Nigerian students studying in Ghana as at 2016, a whooping 50% rise from figures as at 2012. Whatever the case, the point is that Ghana is a top destination for many Nigerians to further their studies. 1. United Kingdom UK remains the number one destination for Nigerian students to study abroad. In 2016, there were 17,973 Nigerians studying in UK universities. Mr. Iain Steward, member of the British Parliament, said that about 30,000 Nigerian students would be studying in UK Universities by 2020. This number accounts for 7% of the total UK University population. As a result, there are several UK Scholarships opportunities for Nigerian Students and more scholarships every year. Other 5 countries with Nigerian students studying abroad were India – 1,260 students, Egypt – 1,189 students, Australia – 949 students, Turkey – 876 students and Germany with – 845 Nigerian students as at 2016. Again the figures presented here may be underreported, but we assume it gives a representation of countries where you can find most Nigerian students. http://www.afterschoolafrica.com/10032/study-abroad-nigerian/
