PoliticsThis Nigerian City Is The WORST City In The World by divinehand2003(op): 5:14pm On Feb 14, 2017
Onitsha, Anambra state Nigeria was in 2016 ranked the worst city in the world for the staggering levels of PM10 particulate matter in its air.
Okpoko market, Onitsha

Okpoko market, Onitsha

Onitsha’s mean annual concentration was recorded at 594 micrograms per cubic metre by the World Health Organization – massively exceeding the WHO’s annual guideline limit for PM10s of 20μg/m3.

This means that Onitsha is the most polluted city in the world, but the people living in it do not even know it.

According to a report by The Guardian, sources of the pollution include dust storms, gases emitted by vehicles, all types of combustion, and industrial activities such as cement manufacturing, construction, mining and smelting.

Other rapidly growing Nigerian cities such as Kaduna, Aba and Umuahia, are featured in the WHO’s 20 worst offenders for PM10s, worst polluted cities.

Many of the people who live in Onitsha do not think it is a major problem, however, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), around 600,000 deaths throughout Africa every year are associated with air pollution, while in October 2016 report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) suggested that polluted air could be killing 712,000 people prematurely every year across the continent.

These are what some people had to say about the pollution:

One female traffic warden has been working around Okpoko market for two days when asked how copes with the dust, said: “I am just doing my job, dust does not kill people.”

A businessman in the neighbourhood of Nwangene, Ikechukwu Obizue, says residents cannot do much:

“Onitsha is quite dirty, but the government is not doing anything about it. We do environmental sanitation monthly, but then the city returns to being dirty.

“It is the government’s responsibility to keep the city clean, not the work of the residents – people in this city are too busy hustling to make an income.”

At one of the few state-approved dump sites on Creek Road, a man, Ikechuckwu who works at a smelting workshop.

The man who has been smelting iron for about 5 years said: “I know how to take care of myself,” he brags. “I am not wearing a nose mask because I don’t need it. I take medicine to cater for my health.

“The major problem is that we don’t take air pollution seriously in Nigeria,” says medical practitioner Dr Nelson Aluya.

“As the population increases and we become more industrialised, we ought to have active air-monitoring agencies and a federal environmental protection agency. We say they are there – but are they active?”

PoliticsSyndicate Behind N8bn CBN Currency Scam – Witness by divinehand2003(op): 4:57pm On Feb 14, 2017
A witness in the case of alleged N8bn CBN currency scam, Mr. Edwin Ennah, on Tuesday said that there was a syndicate at the Ibadan branch of the apex bank behind the fraud.

Testifying before Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel, the retired Head of Currency Processing and Disposal Unit said that he discovered that some people were replacing cut newspapers and lower denominations with N1,000 that were supposed to be destroyed.

He said that since he made the discovery in 2013 no investigation had been conducted by the branch to establish the veracity of this discovery.

Ennah added that his investigation revealed that there were 11 boxes which were supposed to be containing N10m each of N1,000 denomination, totalling N110m.

These, he added, were replaced with either lower notes or newspapers cuttings.

The witness stated that CBN lost over N65m in that singular incident.

He further said that upon the discovery that there was a mix of cut newspapers and lower denominations in the boxes sent by Sterling Bank, he asked the bank to send their representatives to witness the inspection of their boxes.

Ennah said that he was, however, surprised that the bank declined response until he reported the matter to the CBN office in Abuja which compelled it to comply.

Meanwhile, the fifth accused person, Emmanuel Ordia, on resumption of trial filed a bail application on grounds of ill health.

The prosecution counsel, Adebisi Adeniyi, prayed the court to reject the arguments adduced by the defence counsel, A. Adebayo.

Ayo-Emmanuel adjourned ruling on the bail application and further trial to Wednesday.

It would be recalled that Kolawole Babalola, Muniru Olaniran, Kayode Togun, Ibrahim Salami and Emmanuel Ordia along with others had since 2015 been standing trial over multiple charges.

The charges border on conspiracy, conversion, forgery, stealing and re-circulation of mutilated N8bn at the Ibadan branch of CBN.

PoliticsNigerian senators hold crucial meeting with their phone lights as power outage o by divinehand2003(op): 3:34pm On Feb 14, 2017
- The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, last Tuesday, commenced the screening of the 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees

- The names of the nominees were forwarded to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari for confirmation

- An embarrassing incident occurred during the screening

A report by New Telegraph has detailed how there was power outage in the Senate new building complex last week Tuesday, February 7.

Blackout in Senate as senators screen ambassadorial nominees

According to the report, the incident happened when the Senate committee on foreign affairs were screening the 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees forwarded to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari for confirmation.

When the outage initially occurred, the expectation was that the screening would be paused for power to be restored but the chairman of the committee, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu and other members of the committee defied the darkness and continued with the exercise.

The venue later became stuffy and virtually unbearable and was partially illuminated with phones torchlight, while camera men increased their inbuilt camera lights to illuminate the arena to be able to get sharp images of the persons they wanted to capture.

Eminent Nigerians who were nominated for ambassadorial appointments went through the hectic process without complaining.

Some of them who were interviewed on their feelings about the power outage refused to make comments, while others said as Nigerians; it was not strange to them because they knew that the country is still undergoing challenges in many areas.

The nominees who were screened are Goni Bura (Yobe), Yusuf Tuggar (Bauchi), Ahmed Ibeto (Niger), Kabiru Umar (Sokoto) and Baba Madugu (Bauchi). Others are Baba Jidda (Borno), Justice George Oguntade (Lagos), Garba Gajam (Zamfara), Bala Mairiga (Zamfara), Christopher Okere (Anambra), Etubom Asuquo (Cross River) and Nurudeen Mohammed (Kwara).

The list also has Amin Dalhatu (Jigawa), Ahmed Bamali (Kaduna), Professor Dandatti Abdulkadir (Kano), Justice Isa Dodo (Katsina), Professor Mohammed Yisa (Kwara), Mrs. Modupe Irele (Lagos) and Suzanne Folarin (Ogun). Major General Ashimiyu Olaniyi (Oyo), Oriji Ngofa (Rivers), Jonah Odo (Ebonyi) and Eniola Ajayi (Ekiti) also made the list.

Do you think the brake disc might be causing that kind of noise. Also have you experienced it before.
Mine was due to an already eroded brake disc which finished the brake pad on the front left wheels faster than the right side. The disc started to wobble in the absence of good grips.
When the disc was removed, I saw that its inner surface was unevenly eroded.
