Melancholic In a nutshell... Melancholic people are emotionally sensitive, perfectionistic introverts. Perfectionistic The defining feature of a melancholic attitude is perfectionism. They are idealists who wish for things to be a certain way, and they get distressed when they are not. They hold themselves and others to unrealistically high standards, and get distressed when these standards are not met. This leads to them being self-deprecating - because they do not meet their own standards - and critical of others - because those others do not meet their standards. Their generally dour demeanour comes from their inner struggle between an imperfect world and a desire for perfection. Many melancholics wish to learn and to understand, to know the details of every little thing, because to be ignorant is to stray from perfection. They are not content to just accept things the way that they are. They are inquisitive and ask specific questions in order to come to a clearer understanding. This leads many of them to be overanalytical, neurotic worriers. They are very stubborn, because they try very hard to stick to their own carefully considered views and standards of perfection, and are not easily shifted from this path. They do not go with the flow. They are tenacious and cannot let things go, because 'good enough' is not good enough. They strive for perfection. They are very pessimistic, and assume the worst due to these unrealistic standards. They think and plan before they act; they are not the types who will resort to rash, impulsive behaviour, and will panic if they are unable to plan in advance. It's easier for them to reject and hate things than it is for them to love and embrace them. Their interests and tastes are picked carefully, and they give a lot of attention to each one, and hold them close to their hearts, rather than having many fleeting interests that change quickly and often. They complain a lot, in a 'whinging' kind of way rather than a 'put down' or 'demanding' kind of way. They tend to argue, because they cannot simply let things be if they seem wrong. They argue using reason, evidence, logic, and explanations, delivered analytically or with pleading. They only argue to set wrongs right, rather than to assert dominance. The argument is about the issue, not about them. They respond poorly to compliments, often 'rebutting' them by saying that they're not so great after all. "Wow, that's a really nice painting you just made!" "I don't know, the eyes are probably too big..." (rather than "Thanks!" ![]() They will blame themselves for mistakes, because they are acutely aware of their own imperfection. They tend to prefer things to be tidy, organised in some way or another. This doesn't necessarily mean 'neat' as such; often they have very idiosyncratic organisation methods. They are idealists, who imagine perfect fantasies and feel upset when things don't live up to these fantasies. They prefer to tackle the heart of the matter, which can lead to them avoiding 'beating around the bush'. Introverted Melancholics are the most introverted of the temperaments in that they crave time alone, and are most at ease in their own company. They can enjoy spending time with others, but this drains their energy, and they need alone time in order to recharge. Much of their introversion comes from their perfectionism. They are picky about the sorts of people that they associate with; people who meet their standards and share their outlook. People that don't will make them uncomfortable; they do not wish to talk to 'anyone and everyone'. Their self-deprecation also makes them think that they might not be very interesting anyway, that they aren't really worth spending time with, even if they know in the depths of their minds that they are very interesting indeed. Once they have someone to talk to in a quiet and relaxed environment, they can talk a lot and will enjoy sharing thoughts and ideas. They are very wary of making friends. Unlike sanguines, it can take them a very long time for them to consider someone they're familiar with a 'friend', but once they've reached this point, they will likely stick with that person loyally. They prefer having a few close friends to many acquaintances. They can be seen as selfish, because they prefer to be alone with their thoughts, to have their own things, rather than sharing time or possessions socially with others. They are usually very possessive about the things that they own and are reluctant to let others borrow or use them, because they treat their own things well, care about everything deeply, and will worry that others will not look after them with the same level of care. They could be described as 'intense', rather than 'easy-going'. Sensitive Melancholics are very emotional. They are moved deeply by beauty, and by distress. They are very easily hurt, because of their perfectionistic tendencies. Often their moods are like delicate glass sculptures; built up slowly, deliberately, and carefully, but easily broken, and hard to repair once shattered. They respond to things that they dislike with misery and with tears rather than with rage. They are very slow to 'snap', but will hold onto emotions for a very long time. They hold grudges, because people who have failed to meet their standards, who have hurt them, will not just suddenly meet those standards without changing drastically. They can become very 'moody', and they can be difficult to interact with because they are so easily hurt. They are not aggressive, and wish to flee from things that cause them distress. If they want to get back at another person, they are more likely to make them feel guilty than to insult them bluntly. They are 'thin-skinned'. Role In our distant ancestors, the melancholic members of a pack may have been the analysts, the information gatherers. They scouted for potential danger, or for food, and reported back to the pack leader. The more accurate their findings were, the better; this led to a trend towards perfectionism, as the 'analysts' closer to perfection survived better than those that made sloppy mistakes. In current society, they often tend towards analytical roles such as scientists, analysts, programmers, logicians, and so on. In fantasy settings, they may be wizards or sages. Phlegmatic In a nutshell... Phlegmatic people are meek, submissive introverts who live to please others. Submissive Phlegmatics do not act as if they are better than others. They are eager to please, and quick to give in to others rather than asserting their own desires as if they're the most important. They take the path of least resistance whenever possible. They so desperately wish for peace, for everyone to get along, and to avoid conflict at all costs. Conflict terrifies them. They do not start it (except perhaps in extreme circumstances), or provoke it, and try to defuse it when it comes up. When forced into an argument, they get very upset and distressed, seeking escape rather than victory. If confronted, they are likely to admit that they are in the wrong in order to prevent hostilities. They don't believe that they know best. They have no desire to be a 'winner'; they only wish for peace. They are well-behaved; rebelling against established rules would feel deeply uncomfortable to them. They're the sort who'd say, worriedly, 'should we really be doing this?' or 'we might get in trouble!'. They really, really do not wish to be a bother to others, and always put others first. This is due to a deep-rooted unease about asserting themselves rather than a lack of confidence, or a conscious desire to be a 'nice person'. They are quick to apologise for any mistakes that they may have made, and will sacrifice their own happiness to ensure that others are happy. They are empathetic, and acutely aware of the feelings of those that they are interacting with, as they do not wish to hurt these feelings. They have tremendous difficulty saying no, and will go along with things that they dislike to make others happy. They are extremely trustworthy; if they make a promise, it's very likely that they will keep it. They're terrified of doing things wrong. They will blame themselves if mistakes are made, even if it was someone else's fault, just to make others feel better and more at ease. They try and word things in a way that is not offensive to others. The will be more supportive than critical. Indecisive They'll defer to others to make choices, and will feel upset and pressured if they have to make a decision themselves; this comes from their inability to see themselves in a 'leader' role. They are natural followers, and work best when they are told what to do. Their language is generally full of uncertain phrases such as 'I think', 'maybe', 'perhaps', 'or something'. Compare "maybe you could do X, or something?" to "do X" or "you should do X". Rather than saying or doing the wrong thing, they'll say or do nothing at all. Obstacles that get in the way of their steady path will cause them to halt and fumble around, not sure what to do. They're more likely to travel around than through it; their path is easily changed by others. Calm Phlegmatics are introverted, and enjoy time alone. However, they are much 'nicer' and more friendly and social than the melancholic, as they're unburdened by 'perfectionism' and as such do not judge others. They enjoy spending time with friends, and are very loyal to these friends, sticking with them through thick and thin, even through abuse. This is because they put others first, and will not leave another even if THEY want to because the other person may not want them to leave. They are almost immune to anger. They have extremely long fuses, and will only snap after a long period of prolonged and persistent abuse. Even then, they're more likely to retreat within themselves and cry than to try to harm another. They like calm and steady lives, free of surprises. They can be relatively confident in familiar situations - if not necessarily assertive - but panic when placed in new ones. They do not seek thrills, and enjoy predictable, quiet, ritualistic lifestyles. They are very quiet, and do not share their own inner thoughts readily, as they fear judgement and don't wish to bother others by waffling on about themselves. They are however excellent and attentive listeners, who will quietly and politely take in and absorb the conversations of their friends. They will always pay attention, and will offer supportive feedback rather than criticism or advice. They'd never say things like 'bored now', as if it's the duty of others to entertain them. Since they hate to offend or hurt others, they generally don't ever resort to aggressive insults or attacks. Belittling or hurting another makes them feel bad, not 'powerful and in control' or amused, so they'll worry about having done this accidentally. They could be described as 'nice guys/girls' or, more horribly, 'doormats' by those with different temperaments. They barely express emotion at all. While the sanguine might whoop and cheer and jump for joy at the slightest provocation, phlegmatics are unlikely to express more than a smile or a frown. Their emotions happen mainly internally. They lack 'passion', as their emotions are mostly internal. They often rely on others ordering them to do things to get motivation. Role In our distant past, the phlegmatic members of a pack might have been the obedient followers who'd get much of the actual work done at the command of their superiors. They may not stand out, but without them, nothing would work. They are the cooks, the cleaners, the quiet office drones, the redshirts, the white mages. |

Nutritionist and trainer to the stars, Harley Pasternak You’ve probably heard of celebrity fitness guru Harley Pasternak. He’s the nutritionist and trainer behind the the unbelievable bodies of celebrities like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Jessica Simpson, Megan Fox, and too many others to mention. I met Harley a year ago and we hit it off immediately—I love his direct, no-nonsense approach to health. The best part is that Harley’s advice is not based on fads; it’s based on science. When everyone is jumping on the trend of the moment—from Paleo to juicing—it’s essential to have a voice of reason. I was so excited to interview Harley and find out exactly how he gets everyone looking so strong and amazing. His advice isn’t complicated. It doesn’t require you to hire a trainer or take a pricey fitness class. It’s surprisingly simple. By the end of the interview I was ready to lace up my sneakers and get outside. Related: 4 Go-To Breakfasts of Fitness Champions BB: OK Harley, I’m really trying to adjust my diet, I just had quinoa, arugula and a hard boiled egg for lunch. What do you think? HP: That’s good! We all need more protein though. One egg is not going to cut it. BB: [Laughs] So what should I have eaten? HP: Each meal should include a protein that is the mass of your hand, a palm-full of a high fiber grain or a high fiber fruit, and then all the non-starchy veggies you want. You want to base your meal around the quality of protein, fiber and healthy fats. That’s the holy trinity. BB: How did you learn so much about nutrition? HP: I spent almost 11 years at university. I have three degrees. I was a nutritional scientist for the Department of National Defense and then I spent the next 20 years studying it and writing about it. BB: There are a zillion nutritionists and trainers, all with different ideas. You have managed to stay at the top for so many years. What I like about you is when trends come and go—juicing, Paleo, or whatever—you are always consistent. Why is that important to you? HP: I think it’s because I want proof of something first. I am very conservative when it comes to giving people health advice. I think if you look at the top 50 selling nutrition books in the U.S., hardly any of those people actually have a university education. There are authors who just heard a 90-minute lecture from the first year of med school, or trainers who have no formal nutrition education. I think the bar has been set very low to be a healthy eating guru. BB: What is your advice for those of us who like a nice espresso in the morning and a cocktail at night? How can those people actually follow your plan? HP: First of all, you’ll live longer having an espresso in the morning! Studies show people who have moderate caffeine consumption actually live longer, healthier lifestyles. Caffeine consumption can be very healthy and reduce the incidence of certain neurological disorders, increase alertness, and the rate of preferred body fat. There are three important things you want: to live healthy, to look great, and to perform well. When it comes to looking great, alcohol definitely does not have too big of a place. However, I am sure there are those people who have one to two glasses of alcohol a day and actually can live healthier, longer lives. Related: Chef Sam Talbot’s Ultimate Smoothie BB: Can you lose weight if you have an occasional drink? HP:In my program I tell people two meals a week should be your free meals. If you want to indulge and have your favorite margaritas or bottles of wine then so be it. But for the most part, if you are trying to lose weight then you definitely want to minimize your alcohol intake. It is not so much the calories, as much as it is the biochemical impact of alcohol on your liver’s ability to mobilize its own fat. BB: You’ve had some very public success with some celebs, what are the transformations you are most proud of? HP:Halle Berry in Catwoman, Seth Rogen in The Green Hornet, Rob Pattinson for Twilight. Megan Fox just had her second child and she looks even better than she did before she had kids. Right now we’re working with Victoria’s Secret’s Behati Prinsloo. How do you take her and give her an even better body? But she looks more toned than ever. I also train her husband Adam Levine. I think it’s great when couples work out together. BB: Speaking of couples, are you really training Kim and Kanye? HP: We definitely work with Kim sometimes, and Kanye has not only been a long-standing client but one of my closest friends. He is one of the most amazing, incredible people. BB: I am obsessed with his music. You train a lot of hot young stars, but what advice you have for those of us who are over 50? HP: Here is the good news. I work with Jeff Goldblum, who is in his 60s and looks as good as he did 30 years ago. There is almost a 60-year age difference between Miley Cyrus and Jane Fonda, and one day I trained them both. I would say I trained Jane in her 70s even harder than I did Miley who’s a teenager. I think as you become older it’s not about working harder, it’s about working smarter. Resistance exercise is paramount as you age, because it really is the fountain of youth. I think the older you get the less you can sit, you really have to be moving all day. Not intensity, you don’t need to do wind sprints, you don’t need to spin, just walk. BB: I know you are a big believer in the power of walking. Is that enough? HP:I always say that Americans are working out too much, but are underactive. They are sitting all day, driving everywhere, ordering in lunch, and getting automated coffee machines next to their desks so they don’t have to go anywhere to get it. Then they are driving to a spin class, sitting on a stationary bike for 50 minutes, and thinking that is enough activity. When it should be skip the spin, and bike or walk to get your coffee. Park a couple blocks away when you get to work. Get off the subway one stop earlier. All those little things are exponentially more impactful than those super high intensity bouts of cardio two to three times a week. I tell all my clients, you need an activity monitor like a Fitbit, and to walk no less than 10,000 steps a day, optimally 12,000. I don’t care if you want to dance in your spare time, take the stairs, walk more, have a walking desk—just whatever you need to keep moving. If you’re a New Yorker you’ve got no excuse. BB: In your new book, The Body Reset Diet, you say you can change your body in 15 days. How is that possible? HP: For years my method has always been slow and steady wins the race, and that one to two pounds of weight loss a week is healthy and sustainable. But much like everything else in our culture these days, people want more and they want it faster and they want it easier. So people start doing cleanses and juice fasts and all this ridiculous stuff. They are losing a lot of weight really quickly and then of course gaining it all back and messing up their metabolism and making themselves miserable in the process. So I have this reset that’s like the anti-cleanse. Rather than just giving you the water from squeezed fruits and vegetables, I am including whole fruits and vegetables, plus protein, which you don’t get in juice, plus fiber, plus healthy fats. So you are going to feel full and you are going to feel great. You will also learn about three meals and two snacks a day and about getting all the essential nutrients you need in every meal. Related: The Amazing Health & Beauty Tonic in Your Kitchen BB: So let’s talk about the Paleo diet because that’s what everyone is currently talking about. What is your opinion on Paleo? HP:I find it very strange that someone would base an eating philosophy on a civilization that only lived to the age of 17. Things were very different back then, there were no automobiles or bicycles, everything you needed you had to go get it physically. So the daily caloric expended was incredibly high for these people, they were moving nonstop. Meat was not easy to get, they did not have primarily red meat in their diet—they lived off of seeds and nuts. They also tell you to stay away from dairy, the truth is people who have higher dairy intake actually live significantly longer, have a lower incidence of heart disease and diabetes. So that is one thing you have to take into consideration. I think the principle that we should eat like our Paleo ancestors is very misleading. I think that it’s a marketing tool, it’s another cool sounding concept. BB: Have you always been super healthy? Was there ever a time where you weren’t? HP: You know when I was a little kid I was chunky. My mother would always joke she would have to get me husky jeans for larger kids. [Laughs.] My wife reminds me sometimes if I overdo it with chocolate chip cookies, that I will have to wear Husky pants again. BB: I would doubt that! HP:I grew up in a household where both my brothers had Type 1 Diabetes so I was raised eating healthy food with healthy ingredients. BB: It definitely worked! I know everyone always asks about your advice for others, but what do you do for yourself to stay healthy? HP:I usually start my day with a white smoothie. It is like an apple pie smoothie for the most part. I love it: Greek yogurt, apples, almonds, cinnamon, a banana and almond milk. I do it in my own big restaurant quality blender that I designed. Then I will walk to my favorite coffee shop because I used to have an espresso machine at home but I got rid of it so I could force myself to take steps in the morning. At lunch time yesterday I had an open-faced turkey Panini on double fiber bread with a side salad. Dinner-wise, I have fish almost every night. For my afternoon snack, my wife bakes me these incredible zucchini oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. It is actually has a whole zucchini, but you can’t taste it, you can’t smell it, you wouldn’t know. It’s a way of sneaking vegetables into my diet. She makes them with oats, peanut butter, Greek yogurt, and she uses a little bit of coconut sugar. BB: Is coconut sugar is the best kind of sugar? HP:It works for me. I like that you don’t have to use that much of it. It doesn’t give you that insulin spike. BB: Do you eat dessert? HP: Well everybody has their one thing, and mine is definitely the chocolate chip cookie. It happens at different days of the week at different times. BB: Is it a healthy cookie? HP: No it’s the most opulent decadent cookie from the coffee shop around the corner from me called Commentary. BB: That sounds awesome. Do you walk it off after dinner? HP: I walk all day. Right now my earpiece is in and I walked around the block twice. I have a rule that I don’t sit when I am on the phone. BB: I am going to put my sneakers on and get out the door before I do anything else! I learned a lot today. I can’t wait for you to do more with Yahoo Beauty. HP: Thanks Bobbi!

FASHION NEWS Forbes dropped this year's Highest-Paid Model list yesterday, and we weren't at all shocked to see the name leading the pack—after all, we learned about a month ago that Gisele Bündchen makes a cool $128,000 a day, and who in the heck could top that? But there are some other things to note about this year's roster: a couple of newcomers, for one, as well as some undeniable trends amongst the top earners. At age 34, and with campaigns with H&M, Chanel, and Carolina Herrera—as well as Pantene and Oral-B in Brazil, and jelly sandal and lingerie lines for Grendene and Hope Lingerie respectively—Gisele undeniably earns her number-one spot. But what's astounding is the immense gap in incomes between the first and second-ranked models: The Brazilian supermodel and mom earned $47 million last year, about $39 million more than the distant, second-place contenders. Wowza. Doutzen Kroes and Adriana Lima tie for second at $8 million each, proving that it pays to call yourself a Victoria's Secret Angel—especially for Lima, who has worked with the underwear giant for 14 years, the longest of any VS model. Kroes also has lucrative contracts with L'Oréal and H&M to her name, and Lima works with Maybelline. And those misguided folks who might think motherhood and modeling don't mix should take note that the top three models on this list all have multiple kiddos to call their own—Kroes even gave birth to her latest just last month. The oldest and youngest names on the list clock in at number three with $7 million—and they both happen to be "Kate." Moss, at 40, is as iconic as ever, and enjoys that tricky duality of luxury and commercial fashion, boasting contracts with David Yurman, Rimmel, and Topshop. Upton is a newcomer to the list at 22, but has had a lucrative year, thanks to her work with Bobbi Brown, Express, and an acting gig in The Other Woman. Miranda Kerr and Liu Wen also earned $7 million each—Wen being the highest-earning woman of color on the roster, with contracts with Estée Lauder, Esprit, Calvin Klein, and H&M. In addition to her Kora Organics line and status as a street style star, Kerr also has campaigns with Swarovski, Reebok, Mango, Shopstyle, and—you guessed it—H&M to call her own. Alessandra Ambrosio and Hilary Rhoda follow with $5 million, and Carolyn Murphy, Karlie Kloss, and Jourdan Dunn all follow with $4 million, rounding out the top five incomes. Of these 13 top-earners, six work with H&M, five currently work with Victoria's Secret, and three have contracts with Estée Lauder. Eight are moms, which is pretty great. More disappointing, however, is that only two aren't white. My experience with MYUS.COM. I made purchase on monday 26/8/13(just two tablets). The goods got to them(MYUS.COM) on wed evening of 28/8/13. The goods was in their particular office in US till tuesdy 3/9/13 when they started shipping it to Nigeria. The goods got to Nigeria(lagos) on friday 6/9/13. Customs (according to FEDEX, the courier MYUS.COM chose against my request they should use DHL) said i must pay some exorbitant fee(which i did), after spending several days trying to calculate how much i should pay, before the goods could be released. As at today 13/09/13 the goods is yet to leave customs office. Fedex is giving me one story to another. Its almost three weeks since i made the purchase, i'm not taking this funny any longer. Is this what you guys pass through? or is there a better way or courier service please? |
