Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central district in the National Assembly has backed the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on their strike.

DAILY POST reports that ASUU on Sunday announced the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike with immediate effect.

The decision was announced at the end of an emergency meeting on Sunday night.

This came just as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is also preparing to commence a nationwide strike on Tuesday, October 6th, 2018, over a disagreement between the organised labour and the government on the N30,000 minimum wage.

Speaking on the development, Sani in a post on his Twitter page, said the ASUU strike was a justifiable to save public universities in Nigeria.

The Kaduna lawmaker while taking a swipe at lawmakers with wards abroad, noted that Nigeria can afford to fund public universities adequately.

Sani wrote: “I share the belief that ASUU strike is a peaceful and justifiable action to save public universities in Nigeria.

“At 70$ per barrel,Nigeria can afford to adequately fund public universities.Elites in power who can afford to educate their wards abroad, should have some honour.”

The Peoples Democratic Party’s five House of Representatives members from Ekiti State have expressed confidence in the leadership of the Chief Gboyega Oguntuase-led Exco of the party.

They, therefore, dissociated themselves from the Saturday meeting of some stakeholders, which installed Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi as state leader.

The House of Representatives members, Kehinde Agboola (Ekiti North I), Thaddeus Aina (Ekiti North II), Ayo Oladimeji (Ekiti Central I), Segun Adekola (Ekiti South I) and Akin Awodumila (Ekiti South II), in a joint statement on Sunday reiterated their loyalty to former Governor, Ayodele Fayose.

“There is no leadership vacuum in the PDP in Ekiti State, those desperate for political leadership should wait for their time”, they said.

“While we agree that individuals or groups have rights to hold meetings, we are miffed that Senator Olujimi was taking her selfish agenda of collapsing the party structures to the extreme.

“We were not consulted before the meeting was held and most of those who attended the meeting were those who worked against our party in the July 14 governorship election.

“Some of them were even governorship candidates of other parties, and collectively, they could not get up to 1,000 votes in the election.

“Also, leaders like Chief Bola Olu-Oju who attended the meeting innocently have started dissociating themselves from its outcome and by Saturday, this week, a proper meeting of stakeholders will be held in the State.

“Most importantly, is Senator Olujimi also claiming leadership of the PDP in the South-west since she is the ranking elected official in Ekiti State and the South-West?”

“We therefore call on our party members and teeming supporters to disregard the meeting and its outcome, bearing in mind that it was a gathering of dissidents”.

There may be shortage of fuel next week as the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has pledged its loyalty to the Nigeria Labour Congress and any step that the NLC decides to take.

The Federal Government on Friday obtained an order from the National Industrial Court restraining the organised labour from embarking on strike.

The NLC, the Trade Union Congress and the United Labour Congress had, however, insisted on embarking on the strike, claiming that they had not been served with court processes.

Attempts to speak with the presidents of the NLC and the TUC, Mr Ayuba Wabba and Mr Bobboi Kaigama, on Saturday proved abortive as they did not respond to calls made to their telephones.

However, the National President of NUPENG, Prince Akporeha, told our correspondent that since his union is an affiliate of the NLC, it would comply fully with any directive the NLC gave.

When asked if NUPENG would join the strike, he said, “Are we not an affiliate of the NLC? Is NUPENG on its own? Of course we are with the NLC.”

When reminded of the fact that a court had ordered unions not to go on strike, the NUPENG president said, “We are waiting for directives.”

Attempts to get the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria on Saturday also proved abortive as its President, Mr Francis Johnson, neither picked repeated calls to his telephone nor responded to a text message on Saturday.

The organised labour had fixed November 6, 2018 for the commencement of an indefinite strike over the failure of the Federal Government to approve the N30, 000 it is demanding as minimum wage.

Last week, the Nigeria Governors Forum said it could only pay N22, 500 as minimum wage, a position which was rejected by the unions.

A fourth video has gone viral online showing the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, allegedly receiving a whopping amount of dollars bills believed to be a bribe.

In the video, Ganduje could be seen receiving stacks of dollar bills while a voice was heard saying “so far, we have received a total of $145, 000.”

This is coming barely less than 24 hour after a third video was released showing Ganduje allegedly receiving kickbacks from contractors.

The video showed Ganduje, speaking with his guests while receiving documents and stacks of dollars.
The footage also exposed the names of the contractors, projects and the voice of the purported bribe giver.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has berated the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, for saying they cannot pay the proposed N30,000 minimum wage.

Labour wondered why the Governors should peg the minimum wage at N22, 500.

The President of the Labour, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, addressed a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday barely 24 hours after the Governors met and took the decision.

The NLC President said that the NGF was not “known to law and was thus an illegal body.”

Wabba said the “governors should return to their respective states and consult with workers rather than hide under the umbrella of the governors’ forum.”

Sani in a post on his Twitter page urged state governors willing to pay N22,500 as new wage to add N8,000 to meet the demands of the workers.

According to him, Nigeria’s econonomy can sustain N30,000 minimum wage.

The Kaduna lawmaker wrote: “NLC’s nationwide mass protest is commendable. Those who can pay N22,000 as minimum wage should just add N8,000 to make it N30,000. Nigeria’s economy can sustain it.

“The struggle must continue. I will add a strong voice of solidarity to this on the floor of the Senate.”

This is coming after the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) on Tuesday agreed to pay a national minimum wage of N22,500.

The Chairman of the Forum, Governor Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara State told newsmen that the decision was arrived at after a briefing from the forum’s representatives at the Tripartite Committee on Tuesday night.

The President said that with the huge resources at the nation’s disposal at that time, “Infrastructure went to a rot completely within the same period”.

President Buhari stated this on Monday when he received the outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency, Paul Arkwright, in a farewell audience at the State House, Abuja.

“Our focus now is on infrastructure; roads, rail, power, and others.

“How I wish we had fixed all those when we had money. What we earned between 1999 and 2014 is on record, but nothing was done to infrastructure.

“Now, we are doing a lot more, with a lot fewer resources. And we shall continue to do our best”, he said.

The President commended the outgoing High Commissioner for his warm and pleasant disposition, which has seen him traversing almost the entire country.

“I always see you all over the place,” Buhari noted.

Arkwright, who spent over three years in Nigeria, said he visited 30 of the 36 states, and found the people quite enterprising and engaging, adding that the British government would be glad to offer a helping hand as required in any part of the country.

He thanked President Buhari for his support, noting that the relationship between Britain and Nigeria has improved tremendously in the past three years.

As the face-off between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and members of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) continues in Abuja, security operatives have opened fire on members of the group, killing an unspecified number of members of the sect.

The incident took place on Monday at Nyanya checkpoint along Mararaba road.

The protesters, who were coming from Mararaba axis, were stopped by the armed policemen and soldiers drafted to mount a road block in the area.

The number of those killed could not be ascertained at the time of this report.

It was gathered that security operatives opened fire on the protesters at close range, as they advanced towards Abuja. It was also gathered that security agents used live ammunition on the protesters.

This is the second time in two days that soldiers have opened fire on Shi’ites.

On Saturday, at least five followers of Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky were killed in a clash with soldiers in Zuba, Gwagwalada Area Council of Abuja.

The Shi’ites were in a procession from Suleja in Niger State to Abuja for the three-day mass march, tagged ‘Arbaeen Symbolic Trek’, scheduled to begin on Sunday.

It was gathered that when members of the sect approached a military checkpoint near Zuma motor park, the soldiers on duty refused to allow them to pass.

However, the directive did not go down well with the group and they insisted they would pass through the road.

Findings revealed that the Shi’ites later resorted to hurling stones at the soldiers, which led to pandemonium, as the soldiers were alleged to have opened fire on them, leading to the death of five people.

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, on Friday said it had captured over 33 million Nigerians in its database as at October 2018.

NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communication, Mr Loveday Ogbonna stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja, saying that the figure comprised both adults and children.

He, however, decried the low turnout of children in the National Identification Number, NIN, registration.

According to him, the registration for NIN is a lifetime opportunity and having NIN as an individual will strengthen and aid service delivery.

He advised Nigerians and Legal Residents to take their children and wards of all ages for enrolment at any NIMC registration centre across the country.

“Enrolment of minors is ongoing and has no age bracket, parents are encouraged to bring children that are one year and above so that the camera can capture their faces very well.

“What we have observed is that it is difficult to take pictures of children below one year, so we advise parents to wait until their kids are one year old.

“Parents and guardians must present their NIN and their children’s birth certificate before their children or ward can be enrolled and issued a National Identification Number,’’ he said.

According to the INEC Chairman, anyone in doubt of forms submitted by the candidates regarding their personal particulars, can challenge it in court. “Any person with reasonable ground to believe that any information on form CF001 submitted by a candidate contains incorrect or false claims is at liberty to file an action against such candidate at the federal high court or the high court of a state or FCT,” he said.

“While the current exercise is limited to candidates for presidential and national assembly elections, the personal particulars of those contesting in governorship and state assemblies elections will be published on November 9, 2018, one week after the close of submission of nominations by political parties.”

“This is an opportunity for citizens to ascertain the personal details of the candidates to enable them take informed decisions on election day or even initiate legal action against candidates who they believe have made false claims on their forms,” he added.

DAILY POST reliably gathered that the break system of a truck heading towards Akure failed, causing it to ram several vehicles coming from the opposite direction, killing most of their occupants.

It was learnt that the vehicles the truck rammed into, which were heading towards Akure from Ilesha were stopped at a road-block mounted by the Police.

An eyewitness, Mr Saka Temilade, told our reporter that “Heavy traffic that was caused by the police on that check point responsible for the fatal accident.

“A truck heading towards Akure with failed break and ran over vehicles already stopped by the policemen.

“We could not even apprehend the driver of the truck, as he disappeared into thin air immediately the accident happened.”

Meanwhile, the Osun Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Peter Oke on Thursday evening confirmed the number of the victims of the accident, and said efforts had been put in place to clear the road for easy vehicular movement.

A mystery fire, early Friday morning gutted about 19 vehicles parked in a mechanic workshop in Awada area of Onitsha, Anambra State.

DAILY POST gathered that the incident happened at around 2am.

Police public relations officer of Anambra State police command, SP Haruna Mohammed told DAILY POST that, “At About 2 am, there was fire outbreak inside a mechanic workshop located at Amanator Street, Awada.

“About 19 vehicles parked at the workshop were affected. While some were completely burnt, others were burnt partially.”

It was gathered that a high tension pole, whose wire passed through the area was also badly affected.

Haruna said, “The fire was eventually put off by the concerted efforts of residents of the area.

“Police patrol team attached to Awada Division rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to prevent hoodlums from taking advantage of the situation to loot.”

DAILY POST reports that no loss of life or injury was recorded in the incident.

“EEDC has been contacted to effect necessary repairs on the affected power line. The case is under investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident,” SP Haruna Mohammed stated.

I am very pleased to formally commission the new International Terminal of the Port Harcourt Airport, Omagwa today. This ceremony represents a significant landmark for International air travelers, particularly from the South-South region, and the entire Country.

2. You will recall that after opening the major airport terminals in the country in the late 70s and early 80s, not much was added to increase the passenger handling capacity of these facilities by successive administrations.

3. Following the large increase in the national population with consequent surge in air passenger traffic, the capacity of the airport terminals became woefully inadequate to cater for the increase in passenger traffic.

4. Although, palliative measures were periodically carried out, the facilities were fast giving-in to the effects of wear and tear. It therefore became necessary to take decisive action to ensure our terminals meet minimum international standards for the travelling public.

5. The Federal Government responded to a global trend in which aviation became a catalyst for economic growth as a result of massive and speedy movement of persons, goods and services in a safe and secure manner.

6. As part of the infrastructure renewal program, the construction of four new international terminals at Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano airports was embarked upon by the Federal Government with a view to modernising the aging airport infrastructure to meet global aviation standards and improved service delivery in tandem with best international practices.

7. At the presentation of the 2017 Budget to the National Assembly, I promised to upgrade and develop Nigeria’s transport, power and health infrastructure, and complete a number of stalled infrastructure projects.

8. These include construction of new terminals at the country’s five major airports; numerous major road projects; key power transmission projects; and the completion of the Kaduna – Abuja as well as Itakpe to Warri Railway lines.

9. Nigeria having an advantageous central location within the sub-region and our desire to develop into a regional air transportation hub must upgrade its facilities to take advantage of its assets. The recent decision by the Federal Government to remove Value Added Tax from domestic air transportation is in line with global best practices.

10. This will make air travel more affordable and subsequently lead to the creation of jobs by the air transport service value chain as well as increase revenues for government.

11. Today’s commissioning is an example of Government’s deliberate policy to sustain the development of infrastructure for economic growth in all geo-political zones of the country.

12. I, therefore, wish to commend the people of the South-South Region and airport users for their patience during the period of construction.

13. Let me also praise the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, particularly Aviation, the Chinese government and the China Exim Bank for their financial support and the various roles they played leading to the successful completion of this project. I also wish to say well done to the contractor, Messrs CCECC for timely service delivery.

14. It is therefore with great pleasure that I commission the new International Terminal building of Port Harcourt International Airport.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have climed four places on the latest ranking released early on Thursday by the world football governing body, FIFA.

The recent video which has sparked reactions online, captures a shirtless Wizkid in bed singing as an erotically dressed Tiwa Savage romances him and they acted out two lovers in bed.

You will recall that Tiwa’s estranged husband, Teebilz described Wizkid as his little brother and cannot have sex with his ex-wife urging anyone with proof that Tiwa and Wizkid had sex to bring it to him.

However reacting, Tiwa Savage on her Instagram page defended her actions stressing that her relationship with anyone is not a ‘’community project.’’

Report just coming to us reveals that the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has been granted bail in the sum of N50 million.

His bail application was granted during his second appearance before the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Wednesday.

Fayose was arraigned before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges of corruption.

The judge also asked him to provide a surety who must have landed property in Lagos. The guarantor is also required to have three-year tax clearance in Lagos.

Fayose is facing an 11-count charge bothering on receiving illegal monies to fund his 2014 governorship campaign in Ekiti State, among other allegations of benefitting from proceeds of money laundry.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted partly cloudy, hot and dry weather conditions with chances of thunderstorms over most parts of the country on Wednesday.

NiMet’s Weather Outlook by its Central Forecast Office (CFO) on Tuesday predicted partly cloudy morning over the central cities with day and night temperatures of 29 to 37 and 14 to 26 degrees Celsius respectively.

It also predicted prospects of scattered thunderstorm and accompanying rain showers over Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Parts of Adamawa, Abuja, Nassarawa, southern Kaduna, Niger and Kwara states during the afternoon and evening hours.

The agency predicted that northern states would experience predominantly hot, dry and sunny weather conditions with day and night temperatures of 34 to 40 and 16 to 23 degrees Celsius respectively.

According to NiMet, Southern States will have prospects of thunderstorm activities in the morning over the southeast coastal cities of Port Harcourt, Calabar, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom region.

“Thunderstorm activities should extend over a wider area of coastal and inland cities in the afternoon and evening hours with day and night temperatures of 30 to 32 and 22 to 25 degrees Celsius respectively.

“There are prospects of some rainfall activities across the country within the next 24 hours,” NiMet predicted.
