Oyo assembly backs state police bill

The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, seeking to provide a constitutional framework for the establishment and operation of State Police Services across the country.


The bill was passed at plenary after clause-by-clause consideration by the legislators, with the sitting presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.

The consideration followed the reading of a letter from the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, transmitting the bill to the Oyo Assembly for consideration and approval.

The PUNCH reports that the Senate passed the bill on June 24, 2026, while the House of Representatives passed it on July 23, 2026, urging state legislatures to give it expeditious consideration to facilitate the conclusion of the constitutional alteration process under Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution.

Speaking during the sitting, the Oyo State Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ogundoyin, said, “The passage of the bill would have significant legislative implications for the Oyo Assembly, particularly the need to develop a comprehensive State Police Law capable of translating the constitutional framework into an effective operational institution.”

Explaining the bill to members, the Speaker said, “The proposed amendment would fundamentally restructure Nigeria’s policing architecture by providing for a Federal Police Service alongside State Police Services.

“The bill would empower each state to establish its own Police Service through legislation by the State House of Assembly, while defining the respective responsibilities of federal and state police authorities.

“State Police would be responsible for the enforcement of state laws, public safety and order, prevention and detection of offences, protection of life and property, and other local policing functions prescribed by state law.

“The proposed framework would also establish State Police Service Commissions with responsibilities covering the appointment, promotion, transfer, discipline, oversight, complaints and accountability of state police personnel.

“The bill provides for a State Commander of Police to head each State Police Service, with the Commander to be appointed by the Governor on the recommendation of the National Police Council and subject to confirmation by the State House of Assembly,” he explained.

JUST IN: Tinubu arrives Lagos after France working vacation

President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Lagos after ending his working vacation in France.

The President arrived at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, on Tuesday, where Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other dignitaries were on hand to receive him.

The President’s arrival was confirmed by the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Olusegun Dada, who posted on X, “Landing. Welcome home Mr President!”

Tinubu had departed Abuja on August 30 for the working vacation, spending one week in London before travelling to Paris.


According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu departed Paris for Lagos, where he is expected to hold strategic meetings with political leaders and associates.

“While in Lagos, President Tinubu will also hold strategic meetings with political leaders and associates over several days in preparation for the 2027 elections,” the statement read.

The Presidency said Tinubu chose to travel to Lagos first to honour the memory of the late Chief MKO Abiola, winner of the June 1993 presidential election and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s democratic struggle.


On October 1, Independence Day, the President is expected to attend the premiere of a movie honouring Abiola at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.

Tinubu’s working vacation also included a private dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
