He was the Minister of finance in 1984 and the dept of Customs was under the MOF. Soleye was actually Atiku's saviour because if the details of Atiku's carelessness/crass ineptitude by allowing a journalist have access to classified information had gotten to the SMC(Supreme Military Council), no way he wouldn't have been tried under decree 4.. So Soleye ensured the issued stopped at the ministerial level. |

SalamRushdie: the 53 suit cases actually belonged to Emir Jokolo whose son was Buharis ADC then and it was open secret that that the son actually used the dad to launder those suitcases , if Buhari was not involved why did he kill the case Get the facts right. This is the explanation of Mr Odumakin in 2011 Details on the 53 suitcasesBuhari’s spokesman, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, in another statement giving further details on how the 53 suitcases were ferried into the country said: “In 1984, the Emir of Gwandu whose son was ADC to General Buhari was returning to the country from overseas.
The Head of State on learning of his arrival asked his son to go and receive him at the airport as they were only playing squash at the time.
“Coincidentally, the Nigerian ambassador to Libya at the time, Dr. Tahir Waziri, arrived at the same time with the Emir with his three wives and 16 children.
They all came with their belongings as he was coming home to take up a new appointment as chief of protocol to the Head of State. It was the suitcases of the family of 20 that were counted as belonging to the Emir and falsely presented to the public. |

From Atiku's own account, he wasn't present at the scene of the incidence. He was home that day being a weekend. So the much he knew was from briefing by ground staff. So his recent claim that he prevented the smuggling of money into the country is a fat lie
He stated the number of suitcases brought in, not their contents, was entered into the customs" station diary. So how did he know the contents was money. If indeed it was money, he should kindly state in which currencies.
Atiku cannot pretend in his current ego trip that he didn't know who the suitcases belonged to. In 2017, he pointedly stated in the interview with Thisday, that a powerful first class traditional ruler in the north was the owner of the suitcases. Even though in his usual cowardly disposition he couldn't mention his name, we all know who that traditional ruler was. Why is Atiku now yarning a new tale.
He claimed, he almost lost his job as a result of the incidence. He should have lost his job and put on trial! Here is a man who said the station diary of the customs was supposed to be a confidential government document but allowed a journalist to peruse it which was later used to write a damaging report against the government and its officials, a clear violation of Decree 4.
Atiku should be asked of what became of the investigation he claimed to have initiated on the 53 suitcase saga |

Trending on front page is the thread: Buhari Has History Of Bringing Looted Funds To Nigeria – AtikuThe issue of 53 suitcases has characterized several presidential electioneering campaigns since 1999. Most notable is the 2011 presidential campaign. In an interview published in the Vanguard, 21 March 2011 Candidate Buhari directed his interviewers to channel further questions on the 53 suitcases to Atiku Abubakar, the person in charge of customs at MMA when the incidence occurred. Atiku in a riposte acquitted himself and blamed “rude and crude” soldiers from Buhari’s headquarters for the slip This doesn't tally with his current proclamation that Buhari has a history of bringing looted funds https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2011/03/53-suitcases-saga-buhari-blasts-atiku-jonathan/amp/Again on May 3, 2017, Atiku shed further light on the 53 suitcases in an interview with Thisday and reported by several media outlets Alhaji Atiku Abubakar said the importation of 53 suitcases when he was in charge of customs was done by a northern ruler
- He said the saga almost cost him his job
- The former vice president applauded the role played by the late Onukaba Adinoyi-Ojo
Alahji Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, has revealed what truly happened in 1984 over the importation of 53 suitcases when he was in charge of customs.
This Day reports that Atiku made this revelation on Wednesday, May 3 during the inauguration of an education endowment fund in memory of the late former Managing Director of Daily Times, Dr. Onukaba Adinoyi-Ojo, at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja,
Atiku said the importation of the 53 suitcases was done by a first class northern ruler in 1984 which was during the military administration of Muhammadu Buhari and that the saga almost cost him his job as customs officer in charge of Murtala Muhammed Airport.
He said: “I was a young officer in 1984 in charge of Murtala Muhammed Airport while Ojo was a correspondent of The Guardian covering the airport. We got to know each other because apparently, there were some things we both believed in. Ojo was radical and I was radical, he believed in transparency and straight forwardness.
“Then this policy of change of the national currency came into effect by the military government. It was on a weekend when the issue of the 53 suit cases came up. I wasn’t at the airport because it was a weekend and I was the officer in charge of the place and so, there were beat officers conducting the affair
“The plane landed on the VIP section and the ADC to the Head of the federal military government came in with a military truck and personnel and drove straight to the aircraft and offloaded those suit cases and did not allow the Custom officers to do their work, and drove away.
“All the custom officers could do was to make an entry into what we called station dairy. If you are a policeman, custom or military man, you should know what a station diary means. It is a diary where we record all incidents as they happen.”
Atiku recalled the Ojo played saying “because he was such an investigative journalist, he got the report. He wasn’t there and normally, a station dairy is not a public document, but our own document. Somehow, Ojo, because of his inquisitiveness, came to know of that entry and from the extract of that entry, he told the world about the improper importation of 53 suit cases.
“I resumed duty on Monday and was confronted with national headlines about the 53 suit cases and without clearing from my headquarters, I just confirmed that there was such an importation and that investigation was being conducted.
“I was summoned to the headquarters and queried why should I confirm the report, and I said I did because it happened, and I met it in the station dairy. I was threatened with expulsion or dismissal from service and I said I was ready if that was an offence.
“The controversy raged on and the bureaucracy insisted that I should be fired and the then Minister of Finance who happened to be Dr. Soleye, said: ‘What is Atiku’s offence that you want him fired?’ As the minister, he over ruled the bureaucracy and I retained my job.”
He said the saga showed the kind of person Ojo was when it came to work.
“He was completely dedicated to investigating and writing the truth. No matter what you do or try to do, he will go ahead and write the truth.
“Since that moment, we struck a very close relationship. When I had the opportunity to work with him again, I did not hesitate to give him an appointment as one of my Special Advisers... https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.legit.ng/amp/1102783-atiku-account-53-suitcases-saga-imported-nigeria.html |

madridsta007: It is in the history books. Atiku was recommended for sack and then for transfer after that incident. The sack would have been too obvious so it was rejected as an option.
He was then transferred to Kano.
This is Buhari's history as it is. Sadly, most Young Nigerians never read so just know what Tinubu's media feed them. There is dull, duller, and dullest. Choose the one that befits you. Who was Atiku in 1984 whose sack would have generated controversy? A president, vice president, ministers, governors et al were sacked without a whimper. Who was Atiku? Kids on the proll. |

supereagle: They were not after looting then, he didn't even have a house until Abacha came and started paying past president and Head of State.
It was IBB that came in and starred looting. You are wrong in all your assertions. Economic corruption predated the Shagari regime. In fact it started right from the first republic though was limited to the regions. It spread slowly to the federal level as power gradually became centralized. Corruption was rampant during Shagari era. Rice importation was one of those areas that was corrupted. Alhaji Umaru Diko as the Transportation minister. was the sole issuer of import license for rice importation. Likewise, importation of other essential commodities were given to a selected few belonging to the NPN. There was so much abuse that essential commodities became scarce because of hoarding. Prices consequently sky rocketed. Corruption was also responsible for the collapse at infancy of Aladja steel mill, the newly commissioned Sapele ports as well as many of the several River basin development authorities and so many other state enterprises. |

I heard that shagari administration ushered in grand corruption
If that’s true Then maybe shagari is mad at buhari because him shagari couldn’t loot enough funds Hmmm Shagari didn't loot, at least no documentary evidence supporting that. However, his easy disposition led others to make his administration corruption-ridden resulting in the introduction of austerity measure on 1982 which led to a lot of economic hardship later on. Though not known to be corrupt, the hawks of his party, NPN, were overtly corrupt most especially Alhaji Umaru Diko(Minister of transport under Shagari), Alhaji Uba Ahmed(NPN national Secretary), and Chief Augustus Adisa Akinloye(NPN national Chairman) |

Hmmmm OBJ told me Igbo can’t be president under PDP until 150 years – Chekwas Okorie...I also looked at the South-east where PDP has done so much damage to the political psyche of the Igbo people since 1999. No political party in recent history has shown so much hatred for Ndigbo more than the PDP. Unfortunately, this is an aspect that has never been highlighted. It was the PDP that deceived the entire Igbo people and husbanded by the military. All the military generals, apart from Buhari, were the original founding members of the PDP. They established an unwritten policy that no Igbo man will become the president of Nigeria until 150 years. Obasanjo said(to)me (that) pointedly; it is not a rumour or hearsay, but something I can defend anytime. I have said it many times and he never debunked it because he invited me to say it after the 2003 elections. The PDP then came up with the policy that the president will come from the South, but any presidential aspirant that failed to deliver his geopolitical zone will not be eligible to contest, so the Igbo people went all out to deliver the zone for Dr Alex Ekwueme. This was after giving him the impression that they will bring him in as a compensation for the loyalty he showed to Shaghari. The Igbo people delivered 100 per cent of the whole five states, state assembly to PDP…they made sure that the election took place before national assembly and presidential election primaries. So, when they had their convention in Jos, the governors and state assembly people went there as governors elect and house of assembly elect. At that point the Igbo people had been soaked into the PDP, they set aside that policy, knowing that the AD had cornered the whole of the South-west and their preferred candidate was one of their own Obasanjo couldn’t deliver his zone. Having set the zoning aside, they proceeded to deliver Obasanjo. I have never seen such political 419 and mass deceit of an entire race as perpetrated by the PDP against the Igbo...https://www.blueprint.ng/obj-told-me-igbo-cant-be-president-under-pdp-until-150-years-chekwas-okorie/Here you have it.
