I just love this breed, it doesn't seem as popular as boerboels in Naija considering both came from the same region..

I wonder why, breeders??

Interesting train of thought.... I guess we just don't have a market for them here.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog breed developed in Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia. The Rhodesian Ridgeback was previously known as Rhodesian Lion Dog, African Lion Hound or African lion dog because of its ability to keep a lion at bay while awaiting its master's arrival to make the kill. One of the breed's unique trait is that it has a ridge of hair along its spine which runs in opposite direction to the rest of its coat. The Rhodesian Ridgeback has a muscular and powerful build.

The breed is intelligent, loyal and learn quickly, but will be stubborn and willful if it is stronger minded than its owner (in other words they will only pay attention a dominant owner). Ridgebacks react best to an extremely consistent and firm but calm approach to training, training should begin at a young age. This breed was officially recognized by the AKC in 1955.

In my opinion, the Rhodesian Ridgeback shares a slight resemblance to the South African Mastiff (Boerboel) in terms of its muscular frame, color, and roots (they both have roots in Africa). What are your thoughts on this breed?

Pets / Dog Breeds Similar To The Nigerian ‘local Dog’ by DogLover24(f): 11:20am On Feb 22, 2017
Over the years there have been a lot of speculations and questions about the origin of the Nigerian local dog, some of which were raised when I wrote on the Basenji. While the group’s origin is largely unknown (due to lack of research on our part), there are a few breeds that I can not help but notice share a keen resemblance and possibly common ancestors with the local dog. These breeds are listed below;

The Africanis

The Africanis, also known as the African Hunting Dog is a breed indigenous to Africa, particularly Southern Africa. It is believed to be of ancient origin, directly descended from hounds and pariah dogs of ancient Africa, introduced into the Nile Valley from the Levant. The Swahili name for the breed is umbwa wa ki-shenzi meaning common or mongrel or “traditional dog”. The Africanis is medium sized with a slender build, it comes in a variety of colours, with very short, hard and thick coats.

The Africanis is very loyal and courageous with tremendous stamina. It is very playful, intelligent and good with kids. The breed is recognised by the Kennel Union of Southern Africa has a Landrace (emerging breed).

Pharaoh Hound

The Pharaoh Hound is one of the oldest domesticated dogs in recorded history. The breed’s exact origin is unknown, but some believe it began in ancient Egypt. The Pharaoh Hound is independent-minded, highly intelligent, and occasionally stubborn, yet very trainable when positive methods are used.

Numerous Egyptian artifacts and writings show a dog that is probably a direct ancestor of the Pharaoh Hound. The preservation of the breed can be credited to Malta (and Gozo) where it is known to have existed for over 2,000 years. The breed was recognised by the AKC in 1983 and is the national Hound of Malta.

Azawakh

The Azawakh is a sight hound originating from West Africa, particularly from, Algeria, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, they are also bred and owned by other ethnic groups such as the Peulh, Bella, and Hausa. For hundreds of years, this breed has been the companion of the nomads of the southern Sahara, they are named after the Azawakh Valley which spans the region. The Azawakh is a working dog used to hunt small to medium animals and to guard the household. They are relatively uncommon in Europe and North America.

The Azawakh is an excellent training companion for runners and is nearly impervious to heat, it will happily run in weather over 100 degrees Fahrenheit that would kill other dogs. The breed was first recorded in the AKC foundation in 1997 and was recognised by the United Kennel Club on January 1, 1993.

Basenji

Originating from Central Africa, the Basenji is thought to be one of the world’s oldest breed of dog, dating back to the 4th dynasty (of Eygpt) over 4000 years ago. The Basenji has been used as a hunting and tracking dog since time immemorial and is placed in the hound group, specifically, as a sight hound.

The breed’s most unique characteristic is that it does not bark, this is as a result of its unusually shaped larynx. Although the breed is known to make a variety of sounds (yodelling and howling), it is usually quiet, a trait which gives the basenji the nickname ‘barkless dog’.

Pariah Dog

Pariah is a term which was initially coined to describe feral or stray medium-sized dogs found inAfrica, India, or southeastern Asia, However, throughout the 20th century, cynologists have been using the term “Pariah” to describe a primitive naturally selected breed of dogs that have the same physical appearance in all parts of the world in which they are found.

While most pariah dogs are free-ranging, not all free-ranging dogs are genetically pariah dogs, they are also not “mongrel” or “mutt,” which means a dog of mixed breed—although most mix-breed dogs are partly pariah. Individual dogs may be stray pets, descended from strays, or from litters abandoned by owners.

They most likely share the same ancestors, but both dog groups aren't the same. Moreover, the Basenji originates from Congo (Central Africa)

The Basenji is one of the few dog breeds which share a close resemblance to the 'local dog' in Nigeria. Originating from Central Africa, the Basenji is thought to be one of the world's oldest breed of dog, dating back to the 4th dynasty (of Eygpt) over 4000 years ago. Dogs similar to the Basenji are depicted on Egyptian artifacts, the dogs were brought up the Nile as gifts for the Pharoahs of ancient Eygpt. The Basenji has been used as a hunting and tracking dog since time immemorial and is placed in the hound group, specifically, as a sight hound.

Physical Attributes

The breed is small and graceful with a short coat, tightly curled tail, and wrinkled forehead

Weight: 9.5 - 11kg
Height: 16-17 inches
Coat: Very Short coat
Colours: Chestnut and white, Black and White, Brindle and White
Life Span: 10-14 years

Characteristics of the Basenji

The basenji is alert, highly intelligent, independent and reserved with strangers. They have an aloof personality and will only bond with one or two members of the family and most likely wouldn't get along with non-canine pets.

The breed's most unique characteristic is that it does not bark, this is as a result of its unusually shaped larynx. Although the breed is known to make a variety of sounds (yodelling and howling), it is usually quiet, a trait which gives the basenji the nickname 'barkless dog'.

One of the perks of owning this dog breed is that its inability to bark, short coat and clean habits make it a perfect house dog, the downside though is that they can be very difficult to train.

This breed was officially recognised by the AKC in 1943.

Pets / This Season's Most Exciting Event To Attend With Your Dog by DogLover24(f): 10:34am On Dec 10, 2016
December is one of the most exciting months of the year, it is always filled with excitement and anticipation. One of the reasons for this (asides from Christmas and the joy of a new year), is that as December kicks in a series of activities. As we go about enjoying what this month has to offer, let’s not forget to have the well-being of our doggie companions at heart.

There are a couple of ways to do this; you could take your dog for more walks, exercise him more, go for a stroll on the beach or it could be as simple as taking him for a car ride. One unique and ultimate form of pampering though, would be to take him to the most elegant, exquisite and stylish dog event this season; The First Nigerian Dog Fashion Show

The First Nigerian Dog Fashion Show will take place on the 18th of December at 2 p.m, RIVERPLATE PARK, Ahmadu Bello way, Wuse II, Abuja F.C.T and is being put together by Chuns Kennels with the hope of creating more awareness and excitement about dogs in Nigeria. This event, themed ‘Renaissance’ aims to reconnect Nigeria [the African continent] to its past and history – A reminder of our new heritage, a mixture of our European experience and the African culture.

The show is open to all well-behaved dogs. A series of activities have been lined up; a Runway Session, couture exhibition, and a contest between dog models.

For more information on this event; check here or contact any veterinary clinic in Abuja or the numbers on the digital poster. Download or Email delivery of participation forms [attending dogs ONLY] and digital ticket delivery to the attending public is possible.

Pets / How to Know Your Dog Is Pregnant by DogLover24(f): 9:29pm On Nov 29, 2016
The gestation period for dogs is relatively short (63days plus or minus 5days), so it can be difficult to tell whether a bitch is pregnant until the last few weeks of her nine-week gestation period (A dog may not show any signs of pregnancy in the first 2-3 weeks ) . In order not to miss some of the early signs of pregnancy you need to pay close attention to your dog’s habits. The best way to find out is obviously by taking her to a vet, but being aware of her condition beforehand can be helpful. Here are some of the signs that your pet is preggos.

Change in Behaviour

One of the early signs of pregnancy your dog will exhibit is a change in behaviour. She’s likely to have a decrease in energy level and she’ll play less than usual. Dogs are also usually more affectionate and snuggly than usual during this time.

Change in Appetite

Your pet is likely to have a decrease in appetite at the beginning of pregnancy, as her pregnancy progresses to later stages her appetite will increase. It’s usually a good idea to increase their food intake by about 25% during pregnancy and lactation period.

Change in Nipple Development

There is normally a change is colour and size of the nipples. By the last 3weeks of pregnancy, her nipples will get bigger and possibly start to produce milk (especially the nipples closest to her hind legs).

Enlarged Abdomen and Body Weight Increase

Pregnancy gets more obvious physically from the 3rd week, her belly gets bigger and there’s an increase in weight as her due date approaches. A pregnant dog’s body shape doesn’t change until the second half of pregnancy. Between about 4 – 5 weeks her waist begins to thicken and her tummy fills out.

Dogs with false pregnancy can exhibit any of these symptoms, which is why going to a vet is the best bet. Unlike humans, there is no urine or blood test to determine pregnancy in dogs. However, a hormonal test can be done at about 30days into pregnancy.

By the 3rd week into pregnancy, a vet can feel/tell if she has bred or not through palpation or ultrasound. Ultrasounds are usually a great idea because it allows you see the number of puppies and how large they are.

At the about 6 weeks into pregnancy, an X-ray can be done and you get to see the skeletons developing, if an x-ray is done before the 6th week the puppies won’t be spotted because the bones won’t have calcified before this time.

Finally, ensure you prepare for whelping by providing a warm, dry and clean place with a nesting box or whelping box for the bitch and her puppies.

Pets / Interview With Animal Lover Lanre Sunmonu AKA Slimbone by DogLover24(f): 3:25pm On Nov 25, 2016
Interviewing pet owners, breeders and lovers is something I recently considered including on here, I figured it'll be a great way for readers to learn a thing or two from fellow animal enthusiasts. When I eventually decided to start off, Lanre Sunmonu came to mind immediately.
I have known slimbone for a while, he's an ardent and amazing animal lover. I dropped by his place on Saturday to have a chat with him about his love of animals, and also spend some time with his pets. Enjoy the read.

Did you have a dog as a child? If so what breed?

My family is an animal-friendly one. I grew up with dogs all around me, at a point we had about 13dogs all at once and it was fun. There was a particular Male that was 6years older than me, he was the oldest we had, he eventually died at the age of 14years.

Do you consider yourself a dog breeder?

I am not a breeder, am just a passionate animal lover which lead me to what I majored in during my university days (Bsc Zoology, MSc Natural Resources Conservation). To me, having dogs is more of passion than breeding/business, but that doesn't mean I don't make money off them. Before you can qualify to be a breeder, you have to abide by all breeding rules and ethics e.g space, aim of breeding (which is to improve and maintain breed standard of the desired breed you intend breeding, both genotypic and phenotypic) time, finance, setting a standard, etc.

How many animal species have you owned so far?

I have owned so many species of animals, just name it. From domestic to exotic, to weird to cute to scary.Let me just mention a few: Monkey, Dogs, Parrots, Chameleons, Pythons, Rabbits, White Rats, Owls, Hawks, Falcons, Bush rats, Hedgehogs, Different species of birds, Scorpions, Tortoise, Crocodile, Goat.

Have any of your dogs participated in a dog show before?

Sure, my dogs go for dog shows are they mostly win awards.

What are your pets’ names? How did you choose the names?

My Dogs: Havoc, Anton, Suzie, Jessica, Bella, Lizzy, Lilly and Treasure. My Parrots: Michelle, Acapella and Manny Coco. I name them according to circumstances surrounding them for example, if I have a new set of pups (new litter), their name starts with the same alphabet.

What sort of relationship do all your animals have together (do they get along fine)?

My animals are well socialised and they all get along, pretty well.

What do you think makes a good pet owner?

First thing first, passion, then time, sacrifice and finance. You have to love animals to really understand their needs, it's not about you being able to afford one. You have to sacrifice the desired time and money to make them happy.

What have you learnt so far from keeping animals?

I have learnt a whole lot that I couldn't have learnt even from we humans. Keeping pets teaches you patience, perseverance, controls your temper, brightens your mood, makes you see life in a whole different perspective and finally, makes you appreciate God more.

What advice will you give someone buying their first dog?

My advice is, ask yourself these sincere questions: Are you ready for the task you about to embark on? Do you really need a dog? Are you ready to sacrifice your time, money, space and comfort? If your answer is NO, then don't bother. If YES, then this advice is for you:

Get a dog that suits your lifestyle.
As a first timer, study extensively on what breed you would like to own and see if it's appropriate for a first timer. Some breeds are hardy, big and full of energy, some are prone to some illness, which you might not be able to handle as a first-time owner. So, do your research properly and consult a certified canine behaviourist when making your choice.

After you have chosen a desired breed, it's very important sourcing your dog from a reputable breeder that breeds healthy pure breeds. There are so many dubious people out there that parade mongrels and mutts as pure-bred dogs, so you need to consult a sincere canine enthusiasts when buying your first dog. Some people think it's just about buying a dog and feeding it, but there is more to having a dog.

Your dog needs to be vaccinated appropriately by a certified veterinarian.
Feeding the right diet is very important so that you don't end up with an obese or a malnourished dog.
You need to have proper housing for your dog.
You need to clean your dog's housing and environ, properly.
You need to bond with your dog and you can only do that when you spend appropriate time with them. Dogs are emotional, they have feelings too.
If you can guarantee all these steps, then I can boldly say, you are ready for your first pet dog.
