Pets / Interesting Dog Facts by DogLover24(f): 4:28pm On Jul 21, 2016 |
The Local Dog: I left this out in my last post (which is ironic), but this is probably the most popular group of dog in Nigeria. Even though they are commonly called ‘local dogs’, the proper term for them is Mongrel or Mutt. A mongrel is a mix of two or more breeds, many mongrels have no pure breed ancestors. Pitbulls and Locked Jaws: Contrary to popular belief, there is no mechanism anatomically that allows for jaw locking in Pitbulls or any other breed of dog. In dogs generally, the size and power of a bite is proportional to the size of the jaw and jaw muscles. Tail Docking: I once met a guy who thought Rottweilers were born without a tail, it’s hilarious but it shows how popular the practice has become. Tail docking is the term given to the surgical removal of puppies' tails. A lot of people aren’t aware but docking of dog tails for cosmetic purposes is illegal in a number of countries, because the procedure is seen to be painful and more importantly affects the dog’s ability to communicate effectively. Domestication of Dogs: Archaeological evidence locates the earliest dog remains along with human remains 15000 years ago at Russian Plain, Europe. This suggests that humans and dogs have co-existed as far back as this period. Wolves and Dogs: The grey wolf and domestic dog are so closely related that they can still interbreed, producing fully viable offspring. A cross between a grey wolf and a dog is known as a “wolf-dog” or “wolf hybrid”. Why German Shepherds are Sometimes Called Alsatians: When British soldiers brought German Shepherds to the UK after World War 1, anti-German feeling was still intense. Breeders decided it would be diplomatic to rename the breed after the province of Alsace, which was German until the war but is now part of France. Enmity towards Germany continued and it was not until the late 1970's that British breeders recognized the breed by the name used worldwide and re-named their club The German Shepherd Dog (Alsatian) Club. Dog Groups: There are more than 150 dog breeds, divided into 8 classes: sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, herding, and miscellaneous. Dogs Do See Colour: We perceive colour through a series of receptors in the retina of our eyes called cones. Humans have three kinds, each of which is activated by a specific wavelength of light corresponding to a specific set of colours; blue, green and red. Dogs like humans that are colour blind only register blue and yellow wavelengths of light, so even though your dog can’t see red he can distinguish between various shades of yellow, blue and grey. Sense of Smell: Dogs have roughly 40 times more smell receptors than humans, this makes their sense of smell up to 40 times more sensitive than that of humans. Bloodhounds are known more than any other breeds for their sense of smell and are bred mostly for this reason. Pets / Rottweiler Picnic In Ikeja, Lagos. by DogLover24(f): 2:38pm On Jul 12, 2016 |
An interesting activity took hold on Saturday 9th of July, it was a Rottweiler Picnic themed ‘Knowing the Rottweiler’. The event which took place at Alausa Park, opposite state assembly, Ikeja was put together by His Kennels Rottweiler Kennel Club (HKRKC) in celebration of its first year anniversary and also as a give back to the canine community. It was focused on only Rottweilers and the aim was to enlighten Rottweiler lovers, enthusiasts and aspiring breeders on methods of caring for the breed. The event kicked off with a dog parade and photo session after which a short seminar was held, the following people facilitated the event: Mr Emeka Tobi of Von-Tobex talked on Nutrition for Rottweilers Mr Funso Akin-Amuwa of Ajatodar Kennel spoke on Documentation and Breed Standard of Rotts Dr Titilope Akeredolu of HIS Kennel talked on Socialization among Breeders and Dog Pairing Mr Idowu Abiodun spoke on Basic Canine Handling, There was also a free veterinary check up by Truthmiles Animal Hospital. During events like this it’s easy to get carried away and focus only on getting good photos (of your dog) or chatting with other breeders or pet owners. But you should always remember to keep an eye on your dog to ensure he’s comfortable and well behaved, one of the ways to do this is to keep him hydrated because of the heat from the sun, so that he’s not snappy at people or other dogs. Quite a number of people turned up with their dogs for the show and seemed to have a good experience. I think both the organizers and attendees should always put the dog’s enjoyment into consideration and planning, a little doggie give away or treat would have been a great way to end the event. Still it was a good initiative, kudos to HKRKC. xana101:how is it a wild animal . how a dog turns out depends mostly on his environment and training, the rest on genetics. Sorry but you sound ignorant. |
Pets / Re: Native Dogs by DogLover24(f): 9:45am On Jun 27, 2016 |
Eveezy: Sorry about that, i was just trying to make you see that they aren't a particular breed of dog. They are a mix of various breeds(so basically they are just a group of dogs), which is why there isn't an existing market for them. |

Pets / Re: My Dog Poo Is Always Too Much. Help! by DogLover24(f): 5:40pm On Jun 22, 2016 |
xana101:i don't get, why would you FLOG your dog for pooping, if you aren't ready for the stress of owning a dog, why have one ? In my opinion that's abusive. You are probably overfeeding him or there's something wrong with his diet (he cant shit what he didn't eat), him getting lean isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as he is not underweight. |
Pets / Re: Rate This Rottweiler by DogLover24(f): 5:32pm On Jun 22, 2016 |
kchaste:Nice shiny coat, she look really healthy. She doesn't have a massive head formation or paw, but i guess that's okay since she's female. I would rate her 75%-80% 1 Like |
