Many Nigerian Traders lost their businesses during the recent Xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Nigerians are angry because this also happened in 2008 with no reparations. This time they have a list of demands. http://smileandtalk.com/2015/04/27/nigerians-in-south-africa-threaten-revenge/ |
Over the past week, xenophobic violence has erupted in South Africa. It all started when Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini said at a gathering that Foreign migrants were taking all the jobs, and that they should leave the country. This sparked attacks on migrants, many of whom have fled. In this video you will see Nigerian Migrants (who make up the bulk of South African Migrants) preparing themselves to fight back! http://smileandtalk.com/2015/04/17/nigerians-in-south-africa-arm-themselves-against-xenophobia-attacks/ |
Since 2009, the militant Islamist group known as Boko Haram has wreaked havoc in northern Nigeria. Instilling terror through bombings, abductions, and beheadings, Boko Haram is fighting to create an Islamic state in the most populous country in Africa. In 2014 the group kinapped over 300 girls from a town in Northern Nigeria, this move sparked outrage, and the #bringbackourgirls campaign emerged. One year later, the girls are still missing and nothing has changed! VICE News traveled to Nigeria to embed with the country’s army as it ramped up its fight against Boko Haram, whose rise has caused a state of emergency. As the only journalists on the front line in northern Nigeria, we witnessed the beginning of the largest military insurgency to date. Jonathan says, “nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian, calls on PDP members to celebrate and not mourn”. This is the first time in Nigeria’s history that the ruling party has handed over power, and it is truly a historic moment. Hopefully the new ruling party will continue to earn the trust of the people. http://smileandtalk.com/2015/04/01/watch-president-goodluck-jonathans-concession-speech/ |

http://smileandmobile.com/2014/12/30/year-in-review-8-african-mobile-apps-that-trended-in-2014/ Well we have come to the end of another great year, and if you have been following us on smileandmobile.com, you have probably figured out that African-made mobile apps are trending. The year has seen the creation of a number of spectacular apps. From social media apps to mobile payment apps to Games, African entrepreneurs have made a huge splash in this $25 Billion dollar industry. We selected the top 8 apps that are trending in our Mobile app Directory. Ethiotype – Ethiopia The Ethio app offers a keyboard that allows mobile phone users to type various Ethiopian dialects (Amharic, Tirgrinya and Oromo) Nearest Locator App – Nigeria In Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria, there is no lack of services. However, locating these services is a whole different story. Nigerias “Nearest locator app” is changing all of that. With this app, you have the ability to locate all points of interest around you. Banks, restaurants, bus terminals etc can now easily be identified by using this app. Eventus – Egypt What does America’s “time to enjoy” app have in common with Egypt’s “EVENTUS”? They both help users discover local events worth attending! In the bustling streets of Cairo this app is very useful! Suba – Ghana After the incredible success of instagram, app stores have been flooded by picture apps hoping to emulate instagrams success. Africa is not exempt from the steady stream of picture mobile apps. Ghana’s Suba app helps users at any event to share pictures into one central stream. You can also edit pictures by creating fun doodles! Mziiki – Kenya There was no shortage of African music streaming apps this year. We have iroking, las gidi tunes, and giddi lounge, but Mziiki was by far the most popular. In a survey we did earlier in the year, this Kenyan app won in a landslide! Check it out! Table Soccer – Nigeria 2014 has also been the year African mobile games came of age. We heard from a number of different gaming companies in Africa such as Kuluya, Maliyo Games and Smile and Game, but It is a game from Chopup, “Table Soccer”, that we are highlighting today. This game is extremely entertaining, and it brings the Nigerian childhood game to life on the mobile phone! |

http://smileandmobile.com/2014/10/08/google-drops-top-nigerian-blogger-an-argument-for-self-hosting/ Linda Ikeji is one of the hottest bloggers on the Nigerian Landscape. For the past 8 years her blog, lindaikeji..com has been the daily destination for Nigerians looking to get all the gossip on their favorite African Celebrities, Politicians and Socialites. On October 8th the unthinkable happened, visitors to her website were greeted with the following message “Sorry the blog, lindaikeji. has been removed”!!! linda ikeji There are a number of rumors as to why this could have happened, but I am not here to gossip, that is what Linda is for! What I want to talk about is how to decide when to migrate off the free blogging websites (wordpress, blogger) to your own personal hosted site. One thing is for sure, as long as you are not hosting your own site you will always be in danger of suffering the same fate as LindaTo those of you that are new to the world of blogging let me take a few steps back. Blogging software allows anybody to quickly create a blog in minutes. You just register, pick a name and hey presto you are ready to start creating articles! The best part about it all is, its FREE!! You will know someone is using a free hosted website because there is usually an additional appendix in the URL. So in Linda Ikeji’s case, instead of seeing lindaikeji.com she had to settle for lindaikeji..com. What this tells me is that she used Blogger, the free blogging software owned by Google. The advantage of blogger over similar sites is, you can actually integrate advertisements onto the free version. Other platforms (example ) require you to upgrade (pay for a custom URL and host the site yourself) before you can incorporate ads. So Linda just stayed on the free site even after she rose to the 10th ranked website in Nigeria (according to Alexa). linda ikeji on alexa If you are serious about blogging, you are going to eventually have to move off the free site. So here are a few reasons why I think you should move off the free stuff sooner rather than later; Google Rank: Your Google rank determines what position your website will be presented on Google when somebody searches with a relevant keyword. There are many factors that determine how high you rank, but one of them is longevity. The longer your website has been around putting out good material, the higher your Google rank will be. So if you stay on the free blog for two years then switch, you will lose all that time you put in! You lose your Alexa clout: Alexa provides commercial web traffic data, and has quickly become a good destination to determine a websites internet rank. Although Alexa's relevance is debatable, one thing is very evident, many people use it as a first step to determine a websites popularity..........Funny side note, did you know alexas, alexa rank is 2,248 ![]() alexa rank You Can lose all your articles: As Linda Ikeji found out, when your site is hosted on these free blogging websites, you do not have any control over the content. Anytime they (blogger, wordpress etc) want they can just delete your blog. They will just say that you have violated an article in the Terms of Service agreement that we all know you never read! No Customer Service: Finally, free is good, but you get what you pay for. If you ever have any problems with the page, good luck finding someone to help you out. A professional site needs professionals customer service, so if you want to talk to a human being when your website is having issues, then you might want to consider switching. The bottom line is this, it cost $10 to buy a custom URL and their are website hosting options that go for as low as $20/year. So if you are serious about being the next big blogger, open up your wallet. Right now if you want to access Linda Ikeji you have to use her mobile site at lindaikeji.mobil . Or you could just hope on over to our sister site www.smileandtalk.com, you will get all African entertainment you need!
