You know with all the hullabaloo around Edward Snowden and the US government Spying on our phone records, you would think that spying is a brand new issue in the world! uhhmmm No At Smile and Mobile we already told you how there are a number of ways already in existence that can facilitate spying. Its the digital age, there is nothing we can do about it, our phones give off our GPS locations, our ip addresses are recorded on websites, there is a camera on every street. Peoples cell phones can be turned into surveillance tools (the Tsarnaev brothers know about this one). There are even apps like Shazam, that can turn our phones into listening devices!

Well to be fair to Shazam that is not exactly its purpose. Shazam is an excellent app that is used to recognize music and movies playing in the background. With Shazam, all you need to do is turn on the app and it will automatically identify the name of the song playing in the background. Pretty awesome! However, this is not where the potential spying comes in. Shazam has recently made an update to its IPAD IOS app called Autotagging. What this means is, your Ipads microphone will continuously listen and tag all audio within its reach and ping the database to identify what song it is. This will then be sent to a personal queue that the user can listen to at a later time and possibly purchase. Pretty nice feature…….but wait!!! The microphone is picking up EVERYTHING playing in the background, ALL THE TIME and pinging a database! hmmmm.

With 325 Millions users of Shazam, and a number of other copycat apps, I would say that we have a lot more to worry about in the spying arena than the NSA.

It is rugged, durable and can withstand different environmental conditions. I guess that is why they call it the BRCK . Ushahidi, a Kenyan Software company, best known for its conflict crowd sourcing software, is moving into the hardware arena.

Juliana Rotich, Executive Director of Ushahidi discussed the BRCK at the TED conference



The BRCK is a new kind of router built specifically for the African landscape.

The top selling point for the BRCK is its ability to keep running even when the electricity goes out. That is why they often refer to it as “your backup generator for the internet”. The router stays functional for an additional 8 hours after the power goes out, thanks to some very good battery life. When the power is on, the BRCK can also handle a range of voltages, a very necessary feature in Africa since there is constant power fluctuation. In addition, the BRCK can charge efficiently off Solar. It works like a normal router when the power is on and fails over to the nearest GSM network when the electricity goes out. It has multiple sim capability, this allows the router to look for the best network, in much the same way that a mobile phone does.

3G based Wifi connectivity is nothing new, MIFI has that area covered, but.the BRCK is like the MIFI on steroids! and we are looking forward to the launch in November, 2013…………………….Stay Mobile!

You can find anything in Nigeria. This is a phrase commonly used by locals from Lagos to Port Harcourt, Enugu to Sokoto. What they are basically saying is, whatever you can think up, there is someone, somewhere in Nigeria already doing it! In a land of 140 Million plus people, this should come as no surprise. A nation best known in the western world for those pesky internet scams, is actually actually one of Africa’s largest tech Hubs. Innovation moves at a rapid pace, and ever since the political coups of the 80s stopped plaguing the continent. African countries have been speeding towards a technological revolution. Despite the lack of financing and the infrastructural pitfalls, African entrepreneurs have been able to innovate. We already told you about Jumia and Konga. Now let us introduce you to Maliyo Games. Maliyo is a gaming firm with a focus on African lifestyle and stories. Think of them as the Zynga for Nigeria.

On the company website the philosophy reads as follows: “to share the experiences of everyday Africans with a global audience through games. Our narratives, characters, environments and sounds help us achieve this”

With games like Okada Ride, Aboki and Mosquito Smasher, they are doing exactly that. They have even poked fun at the recent kidnapping trend in the country with a new game appropriately named….you guessed it “kidnapped” Maliyo Games currently generates revenue through sponsorship and advertising. If they continue along with the Zynga model they may eventually be able to generate revenue through a pay to play strategy.

The relevance of the gaming industry growth in Africa should not be underestimated. Traditionally, it has always been believed that the only businesses worth the investment in Africa, are large scale government assisted projects: Telecommunication, construction, banking etc. Foreign investments rarely went towards leisure and entertainment. Surprising because entertainment and leisure seem to be recession proof in Nigeria. Subsequently, innovative young entrepreneurs have taken it upon themselves to build the entertainment industry all alone and without government backing. The same revolution happened in the music industry over a decade ago, and today Nigerian artist can be seen performing alongside american artist at the Grammy’s.

Today, the same drive exhibited by the musicians 10 years ago is can be seen by a new crop of African developers like the people found at Moliya Games. African developers, creating African games, that show African people and culture. The importance of these images cannot be overstated. Much like the movie and Music industry. When you have content that focuses on local issues, it inspires the youth to believe they can do the same thing. So the future looks bright for African developers, and Smile and Mobile give Maliyo Games two thumbs up

In previous articles we have told you how Africa is the undisputed leader in mobile money. No other region in the world pays for goods and services with their cell phones like Africans. Well here is another statistic we would like to share. Africa has the fastest growing online shopping market. Although internet penetration is still only at 13% (Africa makes up 15% of world population) the number of online stores targeting African countries has been growing exponentially (countries like Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa are leading the way). These startups are tackling the online shopping market head on. Think of them as the amazon.com of africa. With these sites, users can buy anything from ipads to bicycles, skinny jeans to air conditioners. The real innovation is in the payment methodology. Both sites allow you to make credit card payments through the interswitch payment gateway, but they have also introduced payment on delivery. This is something very unique to African countries and has proved to be a very successful model. This is how it works, you make your purchase online and indicate that you will like to pay for the product when it arrives at your home or business. When the delivery man arrives, you make your payment and collect your product. You also have the option to open up an account with the store (Konga does this, they call it “the wallet”) and any time you make a purchase, they just deduct the payment from your balance. You can refill your account at any local bank or by giving the money to the delivery guy!

Smile and Mobile give Jumia and Konga two thumbs up and they are yet another indication of Africa’s rapid acceleration into the information technology world. Clement Idoko, writes on the forthcoming Congress of African Mathematicians scheduled to hold in Nigeria in July and preparation of Nigerian children for Rubik’s Cube competition during the fiesta.
Mathematics is the most dreaded and hated of all science subjects. Yet, it has been variously described as “the queen of the sciences” and indeed “the beautiful queen” not loved by many.
The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) under Professor Adewole Solarin is working hard to demystify this phobia and make Nigeria “a maths-loved” nation. He has already vowed that some Nigerian whiz kids he is currently grooming would dazzle the world in Mathematical competitions at the African Mathematics fiesta holding in Nigeria in July, 2013.
Solarin, the Director-General of National Mathematical Centre, Sheda, Abuja, was optimistic that Nigerian school children would break the Guinness Records in Rubik’s Cube, one of the competitions to be featured at the event, which would be a convergence of African Mathematicians, students inclusive on Nigeria under the auspices of African Congress of Mathematicians (PACOM).
A 12-Year-old Nigerian child, Master Samuel Chilaka demonstrated this last week at the zonal competition of Rubik’s Cube Competition in Abuja when he solved a puzzle in record 26.7 seconds. The event was held at Regina Pacis College, Abuja. Chilaka a JSS II student of International Model Academy, Abuja, who wants to become an Architect, in the future, was mystical and adept in his movement of the Cubes in resolving the game.
Another student, a 13-year-old, Dahiru Mohammed, from the same International Model Academy, said to be owned by the National Mathematical Centre, also dazzled at the event as he clinched the second position. He finished at 36.7 seconds while 11-year-old Girl of Regina Pacis College, emerged third with an average of 67.7 seconds.
The NMC boss while explaining the game, said “Rubik’s Cube is an internationally recognised game. It has been classified as one of the wonders of the modern world. It was invented in the late 70s by Rubik and since then, there have been international competitions all over the world because it is recognised as one of those things that can determine how gifted or how talented a child is”.
According to him, “if a child is able to master the solution of the Rubik’s Cube within a short time and then able to solve it within a short time, it shows that that child is actually intelligent”.
During the Mathematical fiesta, Nigeria would host the 2013 Pan African Mathematics Olympiads (PAMO) in which African students will compete to select Africa’s best student in mathematics.
The African Mathematical Union (AMU) in collaboration with the entire mathematics community in Nigeria, comprising National Mathematical Centre; Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN); Nigerian Mathematical Society and the government of Nigeria would also host a retinue of African mathematical Scientists and the rest of the mathematical world in a two-week conference to brain storm on how to use the subject to transform the continent.
In preparation towards ensuring the successful hosting of the event and to ascertain Nigeria’s readiness in terms of the provision of world class facilities for the hosting of the intellectual fiesta, the President of the African Mathematical Union (AMU), Professor Saliou Toure from Cote d’Ivoire was in Nigeria to inspect facilities in preparation for the arrival of guests and commencement of the congress and competition.
The theme of the Congress: “Contemporary Developments in the Mathematical Sciences as Tools for Scientific and Technological Transformation of Africa” was designed to deepen the understanding and practical application of Algebra and Number Theory, Real, Complex, Global and Functional Analysis as well as Probability, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematical Modelling, Mathematics Education and History of Mathematics to tackling Africa’s security and economic challenges.
