FEATURES : You have to consider the in-built features of the software you want to use before choosing to learn or make use of a particular software. You have to be aware of the pros and cons of the software ,the flaws and the strength of the software, check out the website and feature /properties of various kinds of that software and make a good choice. EXPANDABILITY : The expandability of a software lies in how many plugins and extensions it has or is capable of having depending on the frame work on which it was built ,it is better to make use of a software or learn a software that has so many plugins and extensions ,so you can maximize the potentials of that software and get better output in good time. INTERFACE: The interface is very important,it is one of the most important things in any software ,i would advice you to always check out the interface of any software before learning it or making use of it.An interface with well arranged menus and well layed out tools is better than a poorly arranged interface ,it tends to confuse you, makes it difficult to find options ,so choose wisely !!!. POPULARITY : It is always better to make use of software that is popular.WHY ? ,a software that is more popular has a larger user base, hence there is increased availability of forums, discussion groups and tutorials for that software. All these gives you a better experience with that software especially if you are just learning that software. SUPPORT : This is very important if the software is a paid one,you have to get value for your money and get support from the technical team of the software in case you run into problems probably during installation or the software crashes often or there is a bug, find out how effective the support for that software is from the makers of the software. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS : This is extremely important, you have to check out the system requirements(like RAM,HARD DISK ,VIDEO CARD etc ) of the software before choosing to use it or learn it ,because if you don't you will run into performance issues when you are making use of the software ,which can cause set backs in production ,or worse the software might not run or start at all.So put these into consideration before choosing a CG software.Check out my article here ( http://cgpadis.com/blogs/9 ) on 9 things to consider before choosing a computer for CG. INTEGRATEABILITY: This is also very important especially if you are working as a team or when you are going to be using other software in the course of production. You have to know and be sure of the import and export formats of the software ,you have to be sure that the software will integrate seamlessly with other software you make use of.Make sure you check out the software website or features to be sure of its integratability. OPERATING SYSTEM : The operating system you have, the version of the operating system you have as well as the operating system and version(of the operating system) the software requires are very important.Let me explain ,some software require and can only run on Windows operating system ,and a particular version e.g Windows 7 .So be sure of the operating system and version the software accepts before choosing a particular software. I am willing to do a free video editing training for someone or people who are interested but as it stands i have a very small place .So if anyone is willing to provide the space i am willing to give free video editing training to anyone or people who are interested for free without collecting a dime. This is my own quota to improving the CG industry in Nigeria. But there are conditions : Whoever wants the training be it an individual or group will provide the following : -A space for me to teach you for an individual but i will actually prefer to teach so many people .Like 5 or more people -And my transportation fee will be paid for To and Fro -And we have to agree on the schedule That's all i will be expecting you folks. 08182346055 |

BACK UP !!! BACK UP !!! Backing up your designs and your files is something that can not be over emphasized. What do i mean? there was a time i lost files that included designs that dated back to 4 years before that time (4 years of hard work gone!!).So please always backup your work ,always back up your designs and files ,it is very important. In case you are wondering where and how you can back up, do one or all of the following(doing all is more advisable if you can) : Back up on as many systems or computers as possible ,your friends laptop, your mums laptop as many safe computers as possible ,note the word safe. Store your data in external data storage devices such as flash drives ,external hard-disks etc. All the above can fail you ,computers can crash ,external hard disks can develop fault ,but your best bet should always be ONLINE STORAGE,yeah !!! this has been very useful to me so many times and the advantage of online storage is that you can access your files anywhere ,even if you don't have access to your computer. Some online storage services you can make use of are Goggle drive,Dropbox, etc ALWAYS PLAN Being a CG artists requires that you plan before executing a project ,whether it is just something you want to showcase or you are just practicing .You have to ask yourself questions like ,what do i want to design ?,what will it look like ? ,what colors would it have ?, what tool/software am i going to use in creating this design, what are the steps i will take.Asking yourself all this questions will help you save a lot of time when you actually start the design or animation on your computer,it is also advisable to answer all those questions(graphically) on paper, i mean make a rough sketch(on paper) of the what your final design will look like.Planning before designing helps save a lot of time ,so make sure you plan before you start that design. DON'T STEAL Stealing or showing off other peoples work as your own can be one of the most horrible things you can do as a designer. Put yourself in the person's shoes, how will you feel if your work is claimed by someone else after spending days working on the designs.Apart from moral reasons for not stealing other peoples designs it could also ruin your reputation as a designer ,your clients will loose trust in your design skills when they find out you have been showing off other people's work as your own ,it places a big tag on you -INCOMPETENT. HAVE AN ONLINE PORTFOLIO Having an online portfolio is one of the most important things a CG artist has to do regardless of your field in CG whether it is animation, graphic design, or modeling ,it does not matter you need an online portfolio-why ?.The world has evolved to a point where almost nothing can be done without the internet ,having an online portfolio is the best way for prospective clients to know your capabilities and your "strong points",it makes them have a feel of what you are good at before contacting you .So create an online portfolio now you can create one here www.cgpadis.com . ALWAYS USE THE RIGHT TOOLS Using the right tools in CG is very important, and most CG artists always overlook this fact ,using the right/best tools will always save time and give you better results .Lets take this scenario for an example,I want to design a brochure or book, and i have the following software on my laptop ,Adobe Photoshop,Indesign,Fireworks ,the fact is that all this software listed can actually be used to design a brochure ,but Indesign should be the chosen one because that was what it was built for and it has some tools that Photoshop and Fireworks does not have which will help you save time and give you better results. So always make your research and use the right/best tools for that CG project you are working on. KEEP UP WITH THE PACE OF CLIENTS Clients are like your life line as CG artists, even though you love what you do i am sure you will also want to make cash out of it ,so keeping your clients happy should be your priority. One thing that makes client unhappy the most is not delivering on time,or at the specified time ,so always keep to the time stipulated by clients even if it means getting an extra helping hand or getting tools to quicken your workflow. DIVERSIFY CG(Computer Graphics) is very broad with so many branches-animation,compositing,matte painting, graphic design and so on.So the fact that you are good in a particular aspect of CG does not mean you should not know some little things about other aspects .It helps you interact with CG artists from other fields without problems, take for example, you are part of a team working on an animated movie and you are an animator you will have to interact with so many other people such as modelers, texture artists ,riggers etc. So for ease of operation, it will be an added advantage if you know some little things or terminologies in the other CG fields. YOU DON'T KNOW IT ALL !!! The fact that you have so many years of experience using a software ,or you have so much experience in a particular field does not mean you should not keep learning ,always get news on new industry standards ,tips and tricks, you never know there might be an easy way of performing certain tasks that takes you hours to finish when it can be done in minutes using another method. So dont stop learning. KEEP PRACTICING You just have to keep practicing no matter how good you are or claim to be.You have to keep improving on your skills ,as you do this you will notice that you will do and achieve more in less time. LEARN AS MANY SOFTWARE AS POSSIBLE Yeah i said it !!!! .Learn as many software as possible ,10 ,20 just keep going ,i tried it and it has being a life saver .It helps you save time, do some task faster, and get better results generally. And it also helps you solve a lot of integration problems easily. BE RESILIENT One of the mistakes i made when i just started out as a CG artsist was that at times i gave up too easily ,learning CG or mastering CG (if you are not a learner) can be very frustrating at times, you will not always get the desired result on the first try, trust me i have been there ,no matter how perfect you claim to be at CG you just have to keep persisting ,and if you are learner dont give up too easily, CG is fun !!!.You just have to keep moving forward ,dont give up,and if you have plans on learning CG and you have not started yet START NOW !!!!.KMF(Keep Moving Forward). ALWAYS USE THE RIGHT COMPUTER This is very important ,choosing the right computer for CG can not be left out of this list it is very paramount ,i wrote an article on things you should consider before buying a computer for CG check it out here - http://cgpadis.com/blogs/9 . I hope i nailed it.Is there anything you thought i should have added ?, get the comments rolling in. Buying computers for CG(Computer Graphics) is not something one should rush into,i have seen so many people who are new to CG buy the wrong computer, the surprising thing is that even people who claim to be "experienced" at CG also buy the wrong computer for CG,not necessarily because of a low budget but because of ignorance. So i compiled this list(in no particular order) to help us make better decisions when buying a computer for CG . Mobility: Should you buy a Desktop or Laptop ?.This is very important ,so important .You have to know what you want, are you going to be indoor all the time, are you going to be on the road all the time, are you a "workaholic" and like to yank the computer out at any given opportunity to start designing or animating. These are factors you have to consider before buying a desktop or a laptop. Screen Size: 14 inch,15 inch,17 inch,21 inch ?.There are so many options to choose from but your aspect of CG matters a lot before choosing the right screen size for a computer be it a desktop or laptop. If you are just a graphic designer a 14 inch computer might be manageable but if you are an animator or game developer 14 inch might not be okay for you because you will have to do a lot of zooming and panning to have a good view of the animation or game scene you are working on,so choose wisely when purchasing a computer with a small screen. In my opinion someone who is into CG should not go below a 15 inch screen. RAM: This stands for Random Access Memory, this is a temporary storage your computer uses when processing information. As a CG artists it is advisable to have as much RAM as possible , imagine rendering a scene with 5 million polygons (for animators and 3D artists) or designing a vector logo or flyer that is about 4000 x 4000 pixels(for graphic designers) your computer will run very slowly and hang so many times and probably crash if you have a very little RAM .So it is advisable to have a RAM size that is considerably okay ,lets say around 4GB if you are on a budget(which to be sincere might still not be okay). But if you can afford it i will advise going for 8GB and above. Processor : The processing speed of the computer you are planning to purchase has to be considerably okay ,whether you are on a budget or not please try not buy a crawling processor. On the specification of the computer you are about to buy you should see something like dual core ,core i3,core i5,core i7,Core i7 is the highest in this case but there are also different speeds for core i7 (for intel processors),you should also look out for something like 2.5 GHz or 3.5 GHz,it is advisable not to buy anything less than 2.5GHz if you are planning to use a computer for CG(Computer Graphics). There are so many other processor specs like Quadcores etc.So explore and check out the specs of the processor and its speed before buying a computer. Operating System: This is another thing most people overlook when buying a computer, you have to consider the kind of software you make use of before buying a computer with a particular operating system.Take this for an example -if you make use of Autodesk 3Dsmax do not make the mistake of buying a Mac computer because Autodesk 3Dsmax is not available for Macs. You have to check the specifications of the software you use before you buy a computer with a particular operating system and make sure it is compatible. Video Card/Graphics Card/Graphics Memory: A video/graphics card is a device installed on a computer that sends graphical information(what you to see) to the screen of a computer.Choosing the right computer with the right video/graphics card and graphics memory is very paramount for people who are into CG ,failure to do this will cause a decrease in performance and speed of workflow, besides some particular software needs precise video card or video/graphics memory to perform well.So when you are choosing a computer check out the graphics card and memory and cross check with the software you make use of to see if it meets the requirement of the software . Ports: This might not be important in all cases but in some cases it is not something you should over look.It is advisable for you to buy a computer that has as many very vital ports as possible ,such as at least 3 usb ports, an RJ45 port,a microphone inlet,an headset port and so on.Take this scenario for example you are working as a team and you need to connect to central server where you can share resources you will need an RJ45 port for networking and you will need to plug in a mouse ,a walcom or any other device for efficient workflow,or if you are a video editor or compositor you will need a fire-wire port (IEEE 1394 port) to capture videos from your camera to your computer. So it is advisable to check out the ports on a computer before buying it and see if it has all the vital ports you will need. Battery Life: The battery life of a computer cannot just be left out (if you plan on going for a laptop).Especially in Nigeria where we have electricity issues the battery life of a computer is a very important thing to put into consideration when buying a computer. Some laptops have 6 cell batteries ,while others have 9 cells ,so choose wisely and check out the specs for how long the battery lasts. Storage Space and Storage Type: The storage space of a computer is very important ,this is how much space you have on the computer to store data,it is very important to try as much as possible not to buy a computer with a storage that is less than 500 GB why?.Because as a CG artist or animator or game developer, there is one thing that is constant ,the higher the quality, the higher the file size whether it is videos,3D models ,vector or psd files ,the higher the quality the bigger the file size ,so you need a lot of storage space. Storage type is not something so many people know about, nowadays laptops and desktops usually have either HDD(Hard Disk Drive) or SSD(Solid State Drive). They both have their advantages and disadvantages but SSD has more advantages than HDD. The only advantage HDD actually has over SSD is that it is cheaper ,on the average SSD is usually about two times the price of HDD for a particular storage capacity,so this adds up to the total price of the computer you are planning to buy. However SSDs are a lot more durable because they don't have movable parts like the HDDs ,SSDs can survive more shock and vibrations better than HDDs,the transfer speed and rate of SSDs(for copying files) is faster than that of HDDs. In conclusion SSDs are a lot better than HDDs,so check out the specs of the computer you are considering and choose wisely. I hope i nailed it.Is there anything you thought i should have added ?, get the comments rolling in.
