chukzyblingz:chukzyblingz, perhaps you are not from Agbor. Could it be that you are just pretending to be from Agbor only to cause confusion? Agbor is part of Igboland, and Agbor people are Igbo people. The whole of Ika areas of Anioma are pure Igbo people. There is no doubt that there are Benin influences, especially around Agbor. Let me make this point very clear: In terms of culture and language, the Benin influence found in Ika areas is mainly around Agbor, while the rest of Ika are even more Igbo than many Igbo communities in the East. Some centuries ago, people from Benin migrated into Agbor. Some of these Benin migrants came by force, waging war against the original Igbo inhabitants of Agbor. Some came by choice, and they were given lands to settle. Over the years, these Benin migrants have become citizens of Agbor, and by extension, citizens of Igboland. The Benin migrants brought many aspects of Benin culture into Agbor, but they could not obliterate the original Igbo culture and language of Agbor because, though they were numerous, their population was small compared to the original Igbo inhabitants of Agbor. Agbor was founded on "Ofo", a universal Igbo emblem that exists in all Igbo communities. Ofo is also associated with "Ani" because the Ofo of the community is usually held by the "Eze Ani". Both "Ofo" and "Ani" exist in Agbor from time immemorial, and these cultural concepts and emblems were not borrowed; rather, they were the very core foundation on which Agbor was founded, because Agbor has always been Igbo right from the beginning. Till today, the Ofo Ani ("Ofo Ali" ) of Agbor still exists, and the elders of Agbor can enlighten you more. The first Eze of Agbor was Eboka, an authentic Igbo name meaning "the community is greater [than a single individual]". The concept of Chi, Mmuo, Nze na Ozo title system (Orinzere/Olinzele), Okpara (Diokpa) community head, Obi/Eze/Dei leadership, the four market days Eke, Orie, Afo, Nkwo, the deities Ani, Ikenga, Ifejioku, are all indigenous in Agbor, and these are authentic Igbo cultural patterns. However, some other cultural concepts have been imported by Edo/Benin migrants recently. Despite some migrations from Benin, Agbor completely retains its original Igbo core and remains a part of Igboland. As the name of the first Eze of Agbor reminds you, the entire Igbo community as a whole is greater than what a single Igbo individual thinks of his origin. |

cheruv:Cheruv, any Igbo leader who truly has vision should call for the unification of Igboland into one region. Igbo leaders need not be convinced before they understand that all Igbo communities should be in the same geopolitical region. If they are not working towards unifying all parts of Igboland into one geopolitical region, it either means that they do not deeply understand the situation or that they feel that splitting Igboland into different regions would benefit Igbo people more, which is a totally wrong and myopic ideology. So, now, the question is, what can the youths and men of vision do to send a serious message to the Igbo political elites to make it a priority to bind all parts of Igboland into one region? Igbo leaders have missed this point for so long. Without any excuses, they need to declare this point a priority and work strategically to achieve it. |
SlayerSupreme:If you underrate any part of Igboland, you are underrating yourself. Ikwerre is Igbo, and all sections of Igboland have equal intelligence, equal capacity, and equal power of the mind to reach any height in all areas of human imagination. Things change, and change happens so fast. What makes a man is not necessarily an in-born ability, rather, it is a combination of all sorts of traits, especially motivation, environmental and psychological situations, level of focus, and conditions that stimulate competition. In philosophy, we talk of "a priori" and "a posteriori" abilities. We can call Nikola Tesla a natural born genius (a priori), but we must also remember that his universal inventiveness was triggered by his diligence, academic experience, and life situations (a posteriori). All men are created equal, but what differentiates men are choice, diligence, discipline, motivation, and environmental situations. Igbo people say, "Onye kwe, Chi ya ekwe" (When a person truly agrees that he can achieve a certain level, his inner spirit will also agree that that level is achievable). So, we the Igbo people should refrain from intracommunal skirmishes and look towards achieving stability and progress as a whole, agreeing that we can do so collectively, and not degrading each other and tearing each other down. And for some misguided Ikwerre people and some other Igbo communities who are still denying their Igbo identity, I challenge you to look deep and ask yourself certain questions. When the world sees you as Igbo and other sections of Igboland embrace you as part of them, and you still deny your identity, you are just acting uncivilized and making yourself a laughing stock before the whole world. |
ANIOMA IS MAJOR PART OF BIAFRA No personal interest people or groups will drop anioma from the mainstream biafra because it's nuclear part of biafra. You are in the contest of Biafra (all igbos including anioma) rated globally as the most educated, hardworking, etc. people and ethnic nationality. Name one nation or people in the world that have suffered what Biafrans suffered after the war and now and excelled from zero rehabilitation to stardom. The answer is None. Prof. Phillip C. ofume & Associates have given igbos or biafra the evidence tools to actualize the nation of biafra but the internal NGOs who have moneyed interest have continued worthless efforts such as street match upon street match, conference/ seminar (including one in US which ended the life of President Odimegwu Ojukwu), etc. If land demarcation at ICJ did not fly, Referendum will prevail at the rate of 96%. https://www.nairaland.com/2739334/anioma-major-part-biafra-apc |

cheruv:Cheruv, see the link to the article. The news was released in 1998. Professor Ben Nwabueze was canvassing for the unification of the entire Igboland into one region, from Agbor to Arochukwu and from Nsukka to Ikwerre. The Professor's proposal is achievable through dialogue and boundary adjustments. However, I don't think the Eastern region should be exclusively Igbo. Many neighboring ethnic nationalities will definitely like to be in the same region with the Igbo people. |

Yampotatocarrot:Yampotatocarrot, your way of reasoning is totally wrong. States and Geopolitical zones are artificial boundaries. Igbo people and other ethnic nationalities existed before these artificial states and zones were created. Therefore, your task as a well-meaning Igbo citizen is to make sure that all parts of Igboland are grouped together into one region, and in the case of a new emerging country, that all parts of Igboland be inside the new country. |
bigfrancis21:Gabriel Nwanze February 19, 2009 at 5:06 pm Eze Chime wasn’t the founder of Agbor, cos the city and kingdom pre-dates him, but he had a stint in Agbor after he fled Benin. He lived for a while there, but some are of the opinion that he actually hailed from Agbor, hence his Igbo name. We all do know for certain that Eze Chime came from the eastern flank ( Igboland ) to Benin and wasn’t a Benin man by ancestry, and also know he was a full blooded Igbo man as his name, Chimerem implied ( shortened to Chime later on ), but wether he came from Agbor or from Nri in Anambra state remains in debate. There is documented evidence that Chime’s grandparents lived in Agbor, but the evidence is not satisfactory, while more recent evidence links him to Nri as his parents/ancestors reportedly had a rulership-related feud with their kinsmen and left as a result, travelling Westward, though he had some royal blood, hence the title Eze being retained in their family name more as a reminder of their roots, as they sought their own kingdom. Some argue that the title Eze is more common , but not limited to people of the South East Igbo origin, while Obi is more common but not limited to Igbos of the western flank, so he may have had very strong roots in either Nri, or in both Nri and Agbor ( inter-marriage ). I’m still gathering more facts on him. For sure, i know that Eze Chime later left Benin after another feud with the monarchy, and he was determined to retrace his roots and where his ancestors migrated from, leading him to move back Eastwards, back into the Igbo area of Anioma and as he went, he set up camps and pocket settlements mainly through his relatives, his soldiers and some of his team that stayed behind and not necessarily by his direct children as many believe, though the off-spring of his relatives, soldiers and aides are generally classified as Umu-Ezechime. His search ended across the River Niger ( modern day Anambra state ), where he died after settling in Onitsha to form an lliance and a co-community with the people of Ado, who were the original people of Onitsha, hence the town was formerly known as Onitsha Ado before being called simply as Onitsha in uniformity with other Onicha towns across the Niger, like Onicha olona, Onitsha Ugbo, etc. There’s a recent contest as to wether Eze Chime died in Onitsha, though, and I’m following the progress of this argument. It is important to note that the towns that were said to have been founded by Eze Chime were not necessarily empty when we arrived there, or he would have been born after Noah’s flood to have attained this ! But that wasn’t the case. Eze Chime did meet people, original Igbo inhabitants ( descendants of the Kwa and Nok civilization as well as Eastern African immigrants that included the descendants of Gad, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. Gad settled in Africa) in every town he was said to have founded, but being a mighty warrior, his influence and name over-rode the existing powers in such areas, and yes, his presence and entrance did bring more development in the places he ( and his battalion ) camped as they moved on, some remaining behind. On the people of Agbor and their ancestry, this also is another hot topic, as even the Agbor scholars cannot explain in full or to any satisfactory degree, how they came about. This inconclusiveness is simply rooted in the fact that their modern day leaders have sought to carve out and formulate an origin for their people, an origin that isn’t theirs, and one that denies their true nature and ancestry. The truth is that Abgor and Owa, who are mainly united with their common tongue in the Ika dialect, are Igbos from origin. Ika is a confirmed dialect in Igbo language as even the constitution of Nigeria states. No doubt, there was a very strong influence by their neighbours , the Bini, which even at a time, ika people were almost entirely absorbed into Bini culture due to the awesome power of the Benin Empire and the natural knack for people in those days, to seek protection from stronger empires or be crushed. But the distinct nature of Ika that is well separate and different from bini could not be over-ridden that easily, and in the end, the Bini gave up in their efforts to claim Ika people as Bini off-springs. This however, didn’t mean that the influence on both language and culture wasn’t left behind in the wake of the exit of the Benin from ika land, and later on, within a period of 600-1,000 years ago, the “Great Flight” occurred, in which a massive wave of immigration from bini was witnessed into Agbor and those immigrants have remained till today, seeing Ika and not Bini as their mother tongue, though some retain both their first and last names as Bini names. But such are in the gross minority in Ikaland, and the majority of any Ika settlement is dominated by the original inhabitants and also by settlers and immigrants from the eastern flank of Enuani dialect Igbo speakers as well as Nri Kingdom ( South East Nigeria, mainly in Anambra State )as they spread. Many of these immigrants from the South East into Ikaland retained purely Igbo cultures, while their Bini counterparts retained Bini cultures, with Ika people having a mixture of both cultures as a result of the factors listed above, in addition to hosting and absorbing their new strangers from both the East and the West. That is where the term “East meets West” was coined, about Ikaland and Agbor. This means that modern day Ikaland has a mixture of three generations of people . The original speakers of Ika dialect in Igboland who were largely influenced by the Bini, the Bini immigrants and the South eastern immigrants. Infact, to halt the spread of immigrants from Nri kingdom into taking over the Benin land area as the Bini kingdom feared, some Bini soldiers ( warriors, rather ) were sent into Anioma land to set up camps and halt the free-flow of people westwards. . The discovery and re-discovery of history always remains interesting. _________________________________________________________________ Comment by Gabriel Nwanze From the Article, "Igbos Of Delta State And Crisis Of Identity (Conclusion)" - written by Ephraim Adinlofu http://www.nigeriansinamerica.com/igbos-of-delta-state-and-crisis-of-identity-conclusion/ |
agronewsng:Tony Elumelu and other Igbo leaders must join hands together and ensure that Anioma becomes part of the South-East. Such an arrangement will help harmonize developments across Igboland from Agbor to Arochukwu and from Nsukka to Opobo. It is time for Igbo leaders to sit down together and do the right thing. We must make sure the entire Igboland is grouped together in one geopolitical zone. Once this happens, we will achieve rapid economic and technological progress. |

Kirigidi:Kirigidi, you are trying so hard to rewrite history. "Emowhua" is a wrong spelling. The correct spelling is "Emuoha" which is the name of a community in the Ikwerre area of Igboland. Emuoha is derived from "Emu + Oha" two Igbo words, similar to the many "Oha" names in the Owerri/Ngwa/Etche areas of Igboland. Secondly, people know that the Urhobo/Isoko clans of Igbide, Enhwe, Evwreni and Emede originated from Igboland. So, do not deceive yourself with your baseless agenda. |
THE ORIGIN OF OGWASHI- UKU, ANIOMA AND THEThe Ikelike people of Ogwashi-Ukwu were the aboriginal Igbo of the land before Odaigbo from Nri came. From all indications, the Ikelike people were Igbo, and they were part of the early Eri subgroup of the Igbo people who occupy the stretch of land from Omambala area in the East to Agbor area in the West. That is to say, the autochthonous people of the Enuani area of Anioma are of the same lineage as the autochthonous people of Anambra area. They all belong to the same Eri subgroup of Igboland. Their dialect and culture, the elaborate tradition of Nze/Ozo titles and Okpala system of leadership, clearly show that these people on both sides of River Niger are of the same stock. River Niger was not a barrier; rather, it was an open access that allowed these people to spread out on both sides. The Ogwashi-Ukwu kingship (Eze/Obi) is found in one of the villages that trace their origins from Nri, while the actual traditional right of leadership is held by the "Okpala" of Ikelike. The elders of Ikelike, the first inhabitants of the land, said they were practicing the Okpala system of leadership before the Odaigbo group arrived from Nri. This is a clear proof that the Ikelike people were Igbo. Any attempt to falsify the origin of the Ikelike people will be seen as a deliberate attempt to re-write history, and that will not be accepted by the elders and academics of the Igbo world. |
http://africandemocrat.com/content/taking-dr-azikiwe-onitsha-origin Taking on Dr Azikiwe on Onitsha origin Most notable Igbo historians disprove Onitsha’s Edo genealogy, but not their Edo prolonged residency and domiciliary. The fact that culture contact of Ezechime and Bini Kingdom resulted resulted in pseudo-monarchy of Onitsha people do not translate to blood genealogy with the Edo people. Professors Afigbo, Onwuejeogwu, Nzimiro, Onwumechili, Alaezi, Echeruo, among others, who were the giants in the research into Igbo history uniformly posted a caveat that although: "The names of the founding fathers, the basic customs, and the language (were) Igbo.....It is not unlikely that some kingship emblems may have been borrowed from Benin....... A distinction must be made between the origin of the people and the origin of some political institutions. " I concur with these giants, in toto. We also know from all accounts of the migration of Ezechime that he left with his nine frown sons and large descendants; and even if Ezechime recklessly omitted to record with specificity of his travails and genealogy, his grown adult sons like, Onicha Ugbo, would have at least done the needful as an traditionally tutored “Bini prince” versed in the culture of written history; that is, if he were truly a Bini prince as claimed by the Onitsha stock of Umu-Ezechime. However, Onicha Ugbo, who was the disputed first son of Ezechime passed on to his descendant that his ancestors (including Ezechime) came from Nri in old Awka district of Eastern Region. The purported Nri genealogy explains the central distinguishing feature of all Umu-Ezechime, which apart from their pseudo-monarchical government, was their celebration of “ozo title traditional rites”, which is 100 % core Igbo culture. In fact, this has a fundamental factual implication to the extent that even Umu-Ezechime who never had “direct” contact with hinterland or mainland Igbo where this “Ozo title rites” are religiously practiced, also celebrate this ozo rite. The universality of this ozo culture amongst the Umu-Ezechime means that Onitsha people could not have copied their “Ozo title rites” by their direct culture contact with mainland Igbos, as their brothers west of the Niger river and as far off as Agbor celebrate r “ozo rites”. Hence, Ozo traditional rite which has nothing to do whatsoever with Bini culture was not a product of “ culture contact” with mainland Igbo, but a product of Ezechime’s “Igbo heritage’ , which is principally justified by his Igbo patrilineal genealogy. http://africandemocrat.com/content/taking-dr-azikiwe-onitsha-origin |
