Rossikk: That report is a bit confusing.@ Rossikk, A mall is been constructed which will house many shops with shoprite the anchor tenant. |
ujoinme: IS SHOPRITE A SOUTH AFRICAN OR AN AMERICAN COMPANY?shoprite is a South African Company. |
At last, construction work has started on the Onitsha branch of popular South African retail company Shoprite. Onitsha, the famous trading town, is the economic capital of Anambra State in South-East Nigeria. Speaking today during an inspection of the project, the state governor, Mr. Peter Obi, promised that his administration would expand parts of the road in the area to further widen the access road to the International Shopping Mall. He said the expansion of the road would be extended to the Onitsha General Hospital axis to enhance free-flow of traffic in the area, as well as to complement the on-going upgrading of infrastructure in Onitsha and environs. The governor expressed satisfaction with the level of work at the kick off of the project and assured that all necessary infrastructures would be put in place to ensure smooth take-off of the facility. He announced that an Amusement Park would also be built in the area. The shopping mall is being executed under Public-Private Partnership (PPP). Welcoming Governor Obi, a representative of the collaborating firm, Mr. Osita Okonkwo, assured that the shopping mall would be completed on schedule and according to specifications. He commended the governor for awarding the contract for the access road to the mall. Also speaking, a representative of the Shoprite Group, Mr. Gerald Frits, said that when functional, the mall would reduce the cost of goods as they would be working with local farmers and suppliers in the state. Frits noted that the facility would also provide a lot of employment opportunities, and commended the vision of Governor Obi in attracting high class investments to the state. •Photo shows Governor Obi at the project site. From ALOYSIUS ATTAH, Onitsha Anambra State Police Command has arrested one Francis Beluchukwu Nwoye in whose residence at Nkwele Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area, six pump action guns and six double barrels were allegedly recovered. It was reliably gathered that the police acted on a tip off by some members of the community, who have been living in fear of the man said to be chairman of the local vigilante group in his town. The vigilante group boss was a few days ago arrested at the Nteje Magistrate’s Court premises where he was standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and robbery. Nwoye, according to sources, was alleged to have dispossessed many people of their lands and sold same without regard for the consequences. However, some aggrieved persons reported the matter to the police and he was charged with conspiracy and robbery, but was discharged by the court on the ground that Anambra State Commissioner of Police was under contempt for another matter. While the legal department of the police led by DSP B.A. Onwuemekaghi is battling to ward off the court contempt raised by counsel to Francis Beluchukwu Nwoye, Barr. C.J. Asiegbu, the same man was last week dragged to the Federal High Court at Awka for a 12-count charge of possession of firearms. The case with charge No FHC/AWK/51c/13 Federal Government versus Francis Beluchukwu Nwoye, was duly signed by DSP Onwuemekaghi (Head of Legal Section, Nigeria Police, Anambra State CID, Awka). He was accused of unlawful possession of six pump action guns with registration Nos: 00318, 599, 1031, 47730, 1763, 998137648 and unlicensed double barrel guns with registration Nos: 032717822, 032717764, 032730985, 0322753254, 072725227 and 072725810. People of Nkwele Ezunaka, who stormed the Federal High Court premises at Awka, the state capital, were disappointed that the case was not mentioned for hearing. However, the case has been fixed for June 26 this year. Source: http://sunnewsonline.com/new/national/police-arrest-man-over-illegal-arms/ |
Awka, the Anambra State capital, was at best, a glorified village when Mr. Peter Obi mounted the saddle as governor of the state more than seven years ago. Interestingly, however, the situation in the area today, is entirely a different story. The town which could only boast of about four motorable roads then: the popular Zik Avenue (formally the Enugu Onitsha old road), Works road, Court road which were all in a terrible bad state and of course, the Enugu – Onitsha expressway, currently has a network of several link roads traversing different parts of the capital city, courtesy of the present administration in the state. Among the roads currently under construction is the Executive Business district, located behind the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), state headquarters complex, Chukwura street and about four others at the hitherto inaccessible Nodu area in Okpuno village, including the one linking the Retreat Centre in that area. Another strategic road currently under construction in the capital city is the link road to the Chief Jerome Udoji state secretariat complex from the popular Arroma junction, Awka. Apart from the current roads under construction, the administration had already constructed many strategic roads in the capital city which greatly assisted in decongesting traffic flow within the capital city. One of such roads is the Agu-Awka – Nibo by-pass which provides easy access to motorists conveying people to and from Enugu - Orumba –North and Orumba South axis to make their trip straight passing through the Agu –Awka area instead of passing through the heart of Awka town. The road also serves as easy access to those travelling to and fro Enugu to Nnewi to cut off the usually congested Amabia round about by driving through the by-pass to Nibo –Nise road, then through Nise –Agulu road to Nwagu junction to Neni – Nobi – Nnewi road. Besides this strategic by-pass, the administration had already developed an area that is today known as the “New Awka City”. This area which is located behind the Government House, Awka, has several thoroughly tarred link roads. Located in this area is the Commissioners’ Quarters which was abandoned by the top government officials it was meant for because there was no tarred road linking the area and even within the estate. In fact, the estate was almost a bush before now as the entire area was overgrown with grasses. Also in an effort to transform Awka into a beffiting modern state capital city, the administration has started the construction of modern buildings for use by public institutions. Almost all the public institutions burnt down by suspected political thugs during the 2004 mayhem in the state, including, the Government House, Awka, state assembly complex, state Judiciary headquarters, the state Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) headquarters, have been reconstructed. The state government had even gone further to build a brand new ultra-modern high rise state secretariat complex named after the late Chief Jerome Udoji. Before the new state secretariat was built, the only structure that served as the state secretariat was the one built and donated to the state government by then military president, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida’s administration after the state was created on August 27, 1991. Before then, most state ministries squatted in rented buildings scattered in different parts of Awka. Another infrastructure that has really improved the social status of the capital city is the popular Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, which was reconstructed by the present administration. The entire landscape is now thoroughly tarred and provided with proper perimeter fence and gates, gallery as well as fitted with modern plastic seats. The transformation of the Amaku General hospital, Awka, into the state University Teaching Hospital by the present administration has also greatly enhanced the social status of the capital city on account of the several modern buildings constructed with the teaching hospital. Mr. Callistus Ilozumba, the state commissioner for Works, told LEADERSHIP that the Obi administration has an elaborate infrastructural development programme aimed at “developing Awka into a modern state capital city, “and this is why you see all these network of link roads being constructed in all parts of the capital city”. “The government is committed to developing the Agu-Awka industrial lay-out to attract more investors into the state capital. And that is why you see the network of roads being constructed in the area”, the works commissioner state Mr. Anthony Okechukwu, president general of Awka Development Union Nigeria (ADUN), though not yet satisfied with the status of Awka as a capital city considering the level of modern infrastructure in place in the town, however praised the administration for putting on ground some facilities relative to what the previous administrations in the state did in the city. Chukwudi Charles Obi observed that the transformation agenda of the Obi administration has led to increase in investment in the town. This development he further observed has led to increase in the population and house rent. “When we had no good roads here, very few people were living in Awka. But since Governor Obi came and started developing Awka, many people have started coming to live In Awka. There are many investments in Awka now. And house rent has increased. A flat which used to be N120, 000 a year is now between N250, 000 and N300, 000, Obi told Leadership. Despite this developmental strides, much work still needs to be done in the city to put it at par with several other capital cities in the country. Governor Obi will be leaving office in about nine months time and the expectation is that his successor would lift the city to a higher ground. Although a date is yet to be fixed for the wedding of PDP chieftain, Chief Chris Mba’s daughter, Barrister Nonyelum Oby Uba and Anyim Ude Jnr, the social pulse is already quickening. On Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the Ubas’ Uga, Aguata, Anambra State home, Anyim Ude Jnr, son of Senator Anyim Udeh, will pay a visit with his people to perform the traditional marriage rites. The top politician is exhaling whoops of joy because this is the first time any of his children would be preparing to tie the nuptial knots. Anambra distributes 177 vehicles to traditional rulers Posted by NAN Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, on Monday in Awka, distributed one SUV each to the traditional rulers of the 177 communities in the state. Obi handed over one of the vehicles’ key to the state Chairman of the Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Alfred Achebe, Obi of Onitsha. He said that the gesture was aimed at helping them run and build better communities, adding that the vehicles would also help the traditional rulers to function effectively. “If you have better communities, you will have a better Anambra, Anambra today is changing for better and I want this sustained,” the governor said. “In doing that, the state government and the local government will do what it can to support the building of a better Anambra.” Achebe said that he was overjoyed because the governor cared about the well-being and welfare of the traditional rulers. “It is completely unprecedented in Anambra and probably elsewhere in Nigeria,” he said. “It is a mighty gesture from the governor and for the government of the state to make a distinct impact on the well-being of the traditional rulers in the state.” According to him, it was one of the several measures the present administration in the state had taken to improve the wellbeing of the traditional rulers. “We pray that God will give us a successor that will continue from where Obi has left and lift Anambra to the next level.” Source: http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/anambra-distributes-177-vehicles-to-traditional-rulers/ |

May 8, 2013 | 12:55 am News By ENYIM ENYIM ONITSHA — Former governor of Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige, yesterday, declared his intention to run for the 2014 governorship election in the state. Senator Ngige made the declaration in Awka on the occasion of Rainbow Coalition stakeholders’ meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), and Democratic People’s Party (DPP). Speaking on the occasion, convener of the meeting and coordinator of Rainbow Coalition, Chief Ben Oranusi, explained that after due investigations and understanding of the personalities aspiring for the 2014 gubernatorial election, they found that Ngige was the person good enough and better experienced to take up the task of piloting the affairs of Anambra State. Oranusi said: “We are urging him to come and contest this election and continue from where he stopped. We have been holding this meeting for months now and now is the time to call him up and say ‘go for us and become our governor again.’” Source: Former lawmaker in the House of representatives for Anambra East and West Federal Constituency Chief Ralph Okeke, later moved a motion for Senator Ngige to contest 2014 gubernatorial election. The motion was seconded by Ezike Nwosu, an APGA member from Ezinifite Aguata in Anambra South and supported by Chidi Abasilim of Idemili South and Paul Obianaso who do not belong to any political party. Speaking on the occasion, Ngige said: “While I was there as governor, I worked with about N80 billion as total budget and executed about N69 billion and if we go by this data and figure, you will discover that the four budget which I prosecuted I had about N150 billion, including the Internally Generated Revenue. “Yet we delivered services and built roads and lifted the embargo on employments and promotion which the then governor placed while in office. “But when you compare my administration with that of the incumbent, Governor Peter Obi, you will see the difference. “He had received N1.2 trillion in total as allocation from Federal Account and about N800 billion as local government allocation which makes it up to roughly N2 trillion in the last seven years, yet we have nothing to show for it. “I wish to ask, what do we have in Anambra State in terms of infrastructure to show for the N2 trillion received by the governor? “Even if you allow for inflation by doubling the N150 billion to N300 billion, does the situation in Anambra State justify the huge resources that has come into the state since then?” source : http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/05/ngige-declares-governorship-ambition-in-anambra/ |

AWKA — GOVERNOR Peter Obi of Anambra State and first civilian governor of the state, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, have condemned the killing of the former deputy governor of the state, Dr. Chudi Nwike, describing it as pathetic, crude and inhuman. Nwike was found dead in Delta State last week and it was suspected that he was killed by those who earlier kidnapped him. According to Obi, the death of Nwike is a great loss to Anambra State and Nigeria. The governor said the deceased was an experienced voice in terms of advice on governance. He wondered why people could still take somebody’s life without scrupples, saying such acts were vestiges of barbarism the country was trying to wipe out. First civilian governor of the state, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, who said he once enjoyed a good working relationship with the late Nwike, described his late deputy as a man who loved to serve his people diligently. |

Billyonaire: Turai Yaradua is now a saint, a woman who ran Aso Rock like her kitchen with the assistance of Michael Aondoakaa. Jonathan's response is very accurate. We need to know the faces of Boko Haram, just as we knew the faces of MEND, example, Tompolo and others. Without seeing their faces and knowing their residences, JTF will keep making life uncomfortable for the killers of Christians and Igbos in the North. And there must be collateral damages, I am not unapologetic about that. God must punish people who kill others for wants of power and desires of Allah. The North has not yet suffered, when they suffer enough, they will bring out members of Boko Haram. Full Stop!GBAM!!! |
