Idi Amin: 23 political ediots out of whom a few managed to pass through university education yet behave like touts and the rest, NECO graduates. Only God knows what they will have to say during the debate. Peter Obi will definitely write Obiano's script while Fashola will write that of Ngige. Before the debate, PDP, as usual, will have one court injunction restraining Ukachukwu from participating and Ifeanyi Uba's pride will not allow him accept a helping hand. He will simply mount the podium and end his career politicallyLol,bad guy...but that Ngige of a guy is an orator...i think he can talk on his own without any script. |
THE Nigerian Election Debate Group has concluded arrangements to host the 23 candidates cleared by the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest the November 16 governorship election in Anambra to a public debate. Addressing the pre-debate press conference in Awka on Thursday, the Chairman of NEDG, Chief Taiwo Alimi, said the group had already met and discussed with the political parties fielding candidates for the election. NEDG has representation from the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria; Nigeria Guild of Editors; Nigeria Union of Journalists; Alliance for Credible Elections; Nigerian Bar Association; National Coalition of Youth Professionals; and the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria. “The debates are designed to present to the Anambra State electorate the opportunity to have firsthand information on the plans of governorship candidates and the strategies of implementation before a radio and television audience,” Alimi said. He said the debates, which would include the running mates to the candidates would be issue-driven and each candidate would speak on a number of identified areas germane to state development and the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria. Alimi said October 22 had been chosen for the debate of the deputy governorship candidates, while the governorship candidates would square up against one another on October 29. The grand finale of the debates, which Alimi said would involve those picked by an opinion poll among voters, would hold on October 31. Alimi said that the debate would hold at the Women Development Centre, adding that the audience would not be allowed to cheer or jeer the debaters. He assured that NEDG was not receiving any support from government, both at the national and state levels. Alimi, however, said the NEDG was being supported by the UNDP, the National Democratic Institute, the National Orientation Agency and INEC. Major candidates in the election include Senator Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress, Willie Obiano of All Progressive Grand Alliance and Nicholas Ukachukwu of Peoples Democratic Party. http://www.punchng.com/news/anambra-2013-23-governorship-candidates-set-for-debate/ |
The Anambra government on Friday described the apology tendered by Gov. Raji Fashola of Lagos State over the deportation of 72 persons to Onitsha as ‘courageous’. In a statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Oseloka Obaze, the government said on Friday that there was no need trying to parse the apology. “As regards Gov. Fashola's apology to the Igbo, he apologised and that is it. There is no need trying to parse his apology, as some are trying to do. “Gov. Fashola has shown himself to be a courageous, noble and an honourable man. As a politician, Gov. Fashola is a blessing to Lagos State and Nigeria,’’ the statement said. In September, Fashola had tendered an unreserved apology to the Igbo over the deportation of some destitute to Onitsha, Anambra, by his administration in July. In his apology at the Silver Jubilee Symposium of the Igbo socio-cultural think tank, `Aka Ikenga’, at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, the governor said the action of his government was misunderstood. “People who clearly do not understand the actions taken and words spoken are those I owe an explanation. “I cannot take the Igbo for granted because we have built a relationship based on tolerance, mutual respect, love and trust,’’ he said. …Gives FG one-week ultimatum From PETRUS OBI, Enugu Labour activist and General Secretary, National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, Joe Ajaero has given the Federal Government one week to resolve its differences with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) or cripple the country with the mother-of-all-strikes. Ajaero who was speaking during the opening of a training workshop organized for labour leaders in Enugu, threatened to ally with other unions across the country to join ASUU on a solidarity stike if the impasse persists. He said: “If ASUU issue is not addressed, we will shut this country alongside other unions. We will ally with other unions and make sure that nothing works in this country.” Ajaero said government was being insensitive to the plight of Nigerian students because the children of the rich are studying outside the country. “This is not a strike based on demand, it’s based on agreement. As government, you must honour your agreement. Here, there’s no social security, the price of food is high, the same goes for electricity tariff. We are going to join our children to stay at home and let them run the system,” he threatened. The labour leader said that the time has come to bar public office holders form sending their children to schools abroad or travel overseas for free treatment, noting that not until then, will government take the various institutions serious and put things the way they should be. Ajaero however, reassured electricity workers that the union would ensure that everybody receive their entitlements before the final handover to private investors and urged them to make good and judicious use of the money and not go on spending spree. “They are playing politics with us but all we have told them is to give us our entitlements and we will handover tomorrow. They said before the end of this week; if we don’t see evidence of payment, we won’t handover.” According to him, the workshop is to prepare them for better management of the funds through skill acquisitions and entrepreneurial skills and urged them to take the workshop serious. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/ASUU-well-shut-nigeria-labour/ |

LEADER of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bisi Akande; as well as Governors Rochas Okorocha of Imo, Adams Oshiomhole of Edo and Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, yesterday, in Onitsha, Anambra State separately spoke on the need for the people of the state to vote for Senator Chris Ngige during the November 16, 2014 election. The flag off of the APC governorship candidate at the centenary stadium, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Onitsha attracted a large number of APC supporters from all the 326 wards in the state, who ceaselessly waved their brooms and danced round the magnificent arena. Tinubu told the people that APC has brought to Anambra a revolution that is going on in the country, reminding them that the revolution cannot be achieved without their full participation. According to him, APC treats headache and even rheumatism to get everybody well and on their feet to contribute to the development of the nation, adding that a nation where universities have remained shut for several months was an indication that the government had failed the people and should therefore be changed. He said that the Anambra election is a test case for Nigerians to begin the expected revolution and urged them to vote for Ngige, who he described as an agent of change. Governor Oshiomole described Ngige as a good product that does not need to be spent money on to be advertised. He said: “Ngige is a man who is tested and trusted and with the challenges facing Anambra State, there is no need to bring in a trainee to start learning on the job. “Ngige is trained to save people’s lives and not to make money to line his pockets and that was what he did before and he will do it again.” Oshiomole recalled how, as president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, he led several protests to Anambra State when PDP was in power in the state because the then governor failed to pay workers, adding that all that changed when Ngige assumed office and paid every worker regularly. Governor Fayemi said the victory of Ngige is important for APC, adding that all the 11 governors of APC are determined to ensure that Ngige emerge victorious in next month’s election. In his speech, Governor Okorocha said the main reason they were supporting Ngige is because he fought and ended godfatherism in Anambra State and warned the people not to allow godfathers have their way again. He also stated that Nigerians were yearning for change from the politics of Baba has said or Abuja has said, adding that Ngige will be a man of his own as his only interest will be to work for the welfare of the people. Commending the people for turning out in large numbers, Ngige urged them to follow who they know, assuring them that he would reenact the Ngige quality in roads, security and other areas, if they vote for him. …Former aspirants back Obiano Apart from Professor Chukwuma Soludo who was said to be outside the country, all the former aspirants that participated in the APGA primaries that produced Obiano attended the campaign flag off with their supporters. Those who were present include Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, Prince Chinedu Emeka, Chief Paul Odenigbo, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, Prince Tony Nnacheta, Chief Patrick Obianwu and Mr. Emeka Nwogbo. Ojukwu jr who spoke at the ceremony said his late father, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu -Ojukwu would be very proud of what is happening in APGA. “My late father handed over the leadership of APGA to Governor Obi and we have seen what he did in eight years and we are here to see him hand the baton to Obiano,” he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/ngigell-end-godfatherism-anambra-apc-leaders/

Obi, Umeh describe APGA’s candidate as best All Progressives Grand Alliance’s (APGA’s) governorship candidate in the November 16 election in Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, yesterday launched his campaign. The event was held at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, where Governor Peter Obi and the National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, described the APGA’s standard- bearer as the best. Absent at the rally was one of the aspirants to the APGA’s ticket and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. Also absent were former minister of Information, Prof Dora Akuniyili and wife of the late Ikemba Nnewi Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu. One of the aspirants to the APGA’s ticket and a member representing Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia Federal Constituency, Uche Ekwunife, hailed the leadership style of Obi and urged the APGA candidate to emulate him. She said with the crowd at the event, it would be difficult for APGA to lose the governorship seat. The highlight of the rally was the redemption of the N10 million campaign promise made in Aguleri at the weekend to APGA by the party’s chieftain, Dr. Boniface Emengini. Emengini also donated a new Toyota Hiace and Toyota V-8 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) to the APGA candidate’s campaign organisation. He said he pledged the money during the fund raising dinner at Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government at the weekend. Obiano thanked Emengini and assured him that he would never forget those who assisted APGA during the campaign. “This is the time for us to forget our differences and come to the reality of time. APGA is the only party that represents the interest of Ndigbo,” Obiano said. A minute’s silence was observed by the party faithful for the late APGA leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwun Ojukwu, whose son Emeka (Jnr) attended the rally with former Minister of Health Dr. Tim Menakaya. The National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, who listed the achievements of Governor Obi, said the party had delivered in Anambra State. He described the state as the headquarters of Ndigbo. Former state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Ifeatu Obi Okoye, defected to APGA with over 20 members of his former party. Another defector, Peter Nwosu, led Labour Party supporters to APGA. Chief Anayo Obiakor left the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) with his members to APGA. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/soludo-bianca-ojukwu-akunyili-absent-as-obiano-launches-rally/ |
All Progressive Grand Alliance candidate (APGA) for the November 16, 2013 governorship election in Anambra State, Mr. Willie Obiano has unveiled what he called 10 pillars of Development with which he hopes to govern the state if he is elected governor on November 16. At a brief ceremony in Awka, the Anambra State capital yesterday where he addressed the media, Obiano said he felt sufficiently motivated to deploy his years of experience in managing human and natural resources as a banker for the service of the state in line with the sterling achievements of the APGA administration in the state. He said only a competent technocrat with a deep knowledge of the intricacies of modern management and a vast external exposure and contacts could sustain Anambra’s present development model, adding that politics was too serious a business to be left in the hands of individuals who were ill-prepared for purposeful leadership. He explained that his blue-print revolved around four major areas and included industrialisation, trade and commerce, agriculture and oil and gas; stressing that education, health, the environment, Infrastructure, commerce and industry, agriculture, housing and urban development, security and social welfare, tourism, sports and youth development, administration and civil service, and enabling laws were enablers that would translate to the visible activities of his blue print when he assumes office. He said he will strive to continue with the works started by the Peter Obi administration, complete these works, unveil them and commence a set of new revolutionary initiatives that would lift Anambra State to the status of the leading investment and leisure destination in sub-saharan Africa. “My mission is to create a socially stable business friendly environment that will attract both indigenes and foreigners to seek wealth creating opportunities in Anambra State,” he said. In the area of Health, Obiano said he would set up free health care policy for children under the age of 10 and underprivileged pregnant women and the elderly above 60 and develop state of the art medical parks to provide full spectrum of excellent quality high-tech specialist medical diagnostic services. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/obiano-unveils-10-point-agenda-for-anambra/160729/

In the midst of the hot politics in Rivers State, the Supreme Court yesterday set aside November 11, 2013 to hear the appeal filed by Governor Chibuike Amaechi against legal moves by his political rival and former governor, Celestine Omehia to unseat him. Before fixing the date at the instance of counsel to Omehia, Chief Udechukwu Nnoruka Undechukwu, five jJustices of the apex court led by Justice Walter Onnoghen consolidated the multiple appeals brought in respect of his re-election that took place in April 2011 as against August 2011. Justice Onnoghen said he was reluctant in granting the adjournment in view of the fact that the matter being a political case, was time bound and needed to be dispensed with expeditiously. He wondered why Omehia, who had previously accused the appellant (Amaechi) of delay tactics would turn around to delay the hearing of the appeal. Although it was Governor Amaechi that approached the court to challenge the decision of the Court of Appeal to join the sacked governor, Celestine Omehia, in the substantive appeal before it. Other parties in the mater also followed him to the apex court with their own appeals. The genesis of the present appeal was when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2010 published a timetable for the 2011 general election and the governorship election in Rivers State was slated for August 2011. The election timetable released by the electoral body also affected five other states, whose governors then, were seeking tenure elongation and were caught up in the staggered elections which the 2007 electoral disputes foisted on the polity. Prompted by this development, Governor Amaechi’s legal adviser, Chief Cyprian Chukwu filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the governor and INEC, contending that the date fixed by the INEC’s timetable was wrong. The fulcrum of his suit was that since the Supreme Court decision which brought Amaechi to power in 2007 was that it was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that won the April 2007 governorship election in Rivers State, Amaechi’s tenure started counting on May 29, 2007 and not on October 27, 2007 when he was sworn in after Omehia was sacked. In his judgment, Justice Abdul Kafarati back dated Amaechi’s tenure and said even though the governor was sworn in on October 26, 2007, his tenure would end on May 28, 2011 or May 2015 as the case may be. His reasoning was that since the Supreme Court said it was the PDP that won the April 2007 governorship election in Rivers State, and not the candidate (Amaechi), the tenure started counting on May 29, 2007 when Omehia was sworn in. The judge held that the period spent in office by Omehia, who was sacked by the Supreme Court, formed part of Amaechi’s tenure of four years, adding that it was wrong in law for the governor to expect that his tenure elongation would run till October 2011 because his election of April 14, 2007 under PDP platform was never nullified by any court. The judge ruled that the Supreme Court in its judgment in October 2007 only asked Omehia to vacate office on account of illegal occupation for the rightful person and never cancelled the poll or ordered any fresh one. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/amaechi-vs-omehia-s-court-fixes-nov-11-for-hearing-of-appeals/ |
The Anambra State Government has commenced channelization of flood water which seems to have defied solution for many years along the Arthur Eze Avenue, Awka and environs. During the inspection of work at the place, Governor Peter Obi, said all the drainage systems in the area would be linked to Iyi-Agu Drain for proper discharge of water to protect roads and the environment. According to him, the work included opening up of all blocked drains and building of another culvert along the Arthur Eze Avenue. He explained that the intervention would help to check persistent devastation of the Arthur Eze Avenue and the UNIZIK temporary site junction axis of the Awka-Enugu Dual Carriage Way. Meanwhile, the State Government is to embark on massive erosion control projects across the state. Governor Peter Obi disclosed this while inspecting the ongoing erosion control project at the New Judiciary Complex, Awka. He said the work would be accelerated on all existing projects to ensure their early completion so as to initiate new ones. The governor, who recalled that the contract for the New Judiciary Complex Site was awarded several years ago, disclosed that all necessary measures had been taken to ensure that it is completed as early as possible. In a similar development, Governor Peter Obi said landscaping of the Professor Kenneth Dike Library would commence immediately the adjourning road project was completed. Obi explained that water from the library and Ogbalu Centre will be linked to the road drain system to protect them from flood and erosion and pave way for the landscaping work. He expressed satisfaction with pace of work done so far and assured that upgrading of infrastructure in the capital territory is on course. It will be recalled that Obi did a major work on the Arthur Eze Avenue and Iyiagu axis where he opened blocked drains that saw water percolating at the area and thus caused a major environmental hazard before the drains were opened. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2013/08/anambra-tackles-flood-in-awka/ |

AWKA- ANAMBRA State governor, Mr. Peter Obi has charged Nigerians to seek divine intervention to tackle the various challenges confronting the country. Speaking at an inter-denominational church service to mark the 53rd Independence anniversary of the country at Women Development Centre, Awka, Governor Obi regretted that Nigerians have failed the country in the way they attend to issues concerning their country. Gov Obi According to him, in spite the huge resources that abound in the country, majority of Nigerians were still living in abject poverty, while the privileged few have been exploiting and amassing wealth. He also lamented that some of the people in positions of authority have not shown commitment in seeking the face of God because of their unbridled and blind quest for money. The governor said the Independence anniversary celebration was opportunity for sober reflection to identify the short-comings and chart a new course for a brighter future. The state chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Bishop Ephraim Ndife, while thanking God for preserving the country, commended Governor Obi for giving the state focused and purposeful leadership and touching many lives since he mounted the saddle. Bishop Ndife enjoined people of the State to pray for a successful election that would produce credible and dedicated leader to pilot the affairs of the State. In a homily, Reverend Father Peter Akaenyi of Awka Cathedral Diocese, who noted the high level of instability in some parts of the country, observed that over sixty percent of Nigerians were still illiterate and more than that were unemployed. Reverend Father Akaenyi who described government as God’s way to maintain public good and direct affairs of men, urged those in position of authority to imbibe strong and impeccable moral character. He said the State had been transformed under Governor Peter Obi as God had used the Governor to show that good governance and dedicated leadership was possible in the State http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/09/nigerians-failed-nigeria-obi/

The Prince Ken Emeakhayi led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Anambra State on Friday held a grand reception in honour of the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Comrade Tony Nwoye. Emeakhayi also used the opportunity of the reception to present Nwoye’s running mate, in the person of Dr Amamchukwu Ezike, a foremost medical practitioner from Nnewi. Addressing party supporters, the chairman said “the leadership of our party at the national level asked that we present to you today our candidate for the election, but I have come to show you not just the candidate of the PDP and his running mate, but to present to you the next governor of Anambra State and the deputy governor. “Usually, during the run up to an election, there will be rancor in the party, with everyone wanting to emerge as the candidate, with others holding their own separate meetings, but once a candidate emerges, it behooves on all to join hands and work for the candidate of the party. “We present to you this formidable team, and no matter the faction of the party you belong to, this is your candidate, and you must work to deliver them”. He reminded members of the party that the leadership of the party had fulfilled its part by giving the people a credible governorship primary election, in which a politician emerged as the candidate. “So, the job is now that of the people to ensure that they fulfill their part of the agreement by going out to work for the candidate”, he added. Emeakhayi said that the party would soon launch what he called ‘operation win your polling booth’, a campaign that will mandate every party member to win their polling booths around the state. Addressing members of the party, Nwoye said that there was need to put straight the rumour in town that President Goodluck Jonathan had an agreement with the APGA government in the state to deliver its (APGA) candidate as a reciprocation of their support. He said, “Let me tell all of you, President Jonathan is very serious about winning Anambra State, because this is a PDP state. Do not let anyone deceive you because we are in the race for real. Soon, Mr President will be here in Anambra himself when we launch our campaigns in Onitsha and you will hear from him. “It is in that flag-off of our campaigns that we will issue a formal quit notice to the APGA government in Anambra. That the landlord has been away does not mean that the house now belongs to the tenants. It is God who gives power, and if not for him, I will not be here today. I was only 32 when I became the chairman of PDP in this state, and people were asking who is he? Does he have money? And questions like that. “I urge you all to go to your various locality and start work, we have the logistics to deliver this election, and whatever you need to make your work easy for you, we will provide it. Other parties have been capitalizing on the problem in PDP to win elections, but this time it will not be so”. Ezike, the deputy governorship candidate in his remark thanked the people for coming out in their numbers to welcome him and his boss. He told members of the party that today marked a new beginning for Anambra State, as its rightful owners had come. http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/09/21/anambra-pdp-holds-grand-reception-for-nwoye-deputy/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=anambra-pdp-holds-grand-reception-for-nwoye-deputy

The faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) under the leadership of Chief Maxi Okwu has suffered a setback following the reversal by the Federal High Court, Awka, of its ruling on who should fly the party’s flag in the November 16 Anambra governorship election. The court presided over by Justice M. Salihu had on September 16 ruled that Okwu should submit the name of the candidate that emerged during his faction’s primaries to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the forthcoming ballot. Based on the ruling, Chief Okwu accordingly submitted the name of Dr. Chike Obidigbo, who on September 2 emerged as the APGA governorship candidate during the primaries held by his faction in Awka, the Anambra State capital, to INEC. The faction’s joy has however been cut short as Justice Salihu this morning reversed the ruling, thus leaving Chief Willie Obiano, who on August 26 emerged as the flagbearer of the Chief Victor Umeh-led APGA, as the party’s only governorship candidate. A source close to Maxi Okwu quoted him as expressing surprise over Justice Salihu’s vacation of his order of four days ago. The source told News Express that Okwu, who was voted APGA National Chairman during the party’s National Congress held in Awka in April, would continue with his suit challenging Umeh’s continued stay in office long after his tenure is supposed to have expired. http://www.newsexpressngr.com/news/detail.php?news=2911&title=Setback-for-Maxi-Okwu%E2%80%99s-APGA-as-court-reverses-ruling-on-Anambra-guber-candidate •Photo shows Maxi Okwu.

Except in the event of a last-minute change of mind, Nigeria’s media mogul, High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi, will be announced as the new Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan before the end of this week. “The announcement may even be made today depending on the mood of Mr. President,” a source close to The Presidency told News Express. The source could not say if a new role would be found for the incumbent Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, or if he would be completely thrown ut of the government. News Express had on July 16 exclusively reported that Dokpesi had been lined up to replace Oghiadomhe as Jonathan’s Chief of Staff in an imminent cabinet shake-up. Dokpesi, whose media group, DAAR Communications Plc, operators of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and RayPower FM, has lately started to wear the pro-Jonathan garb, has worked tirelessly in the past few weeks to win over northern political hawks to President Jonathan’s side. Dokpesi, 61, and Oghiadomhe, 55, are from Edo State in South-South Nigeria and both are chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has ruled Nigeria since the return of democracy in May 1999. However, while Dokpesi brings a lot to the table in terms of his media group and his northern political contacts that includes former military president Ibrahim Babangida, Oghiadomhe’s only known asset is his his political godfather, Chief Anthony Anenih, the PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, who happens to be one of those Jonathan is counting on to help him win a second term in 2015. As News Express reported on July 16, “It is not clear if Anenih has finally agreed for Oghiadomhe to be dropped or if Jonathan has finally mustered the courage to do as he wishes and damn the consequences.” http://www.newsexpressngr.com/news/detail.php?news=2895&title=Dokpesi-at-the-verge-of-becoming-Jonathan%E2%80%99s-Chief-of-Staff-%E2%80%A2Oghiadomhe-on-the-way-out •Photo shows High Chief Dokpesi.
