Angry youths at Chukuku Community, on Thursday, barricaded the Kuje-Gwagwalada road during a protest over incessant kidnappings by bandits in the community. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the angry youths barricaded the road with inscriptions on placards “Government should provide security to Chukuku Community”. The youths set tyres on fire on the busy road, insisting that government should provide adequate security to curb kidnappings being witnessed by the community regularly. A resident, Mr Bulus Wodi told NAN that over 10 people were kidnapped on Wednesday night in a four-hour operation by the bandits in the community. He said that last week, four other people were also confirmed missing, while one person was killed on the spot before the bandits took away their victims, adding that security operatives came hours after the operation. Wodi called on the government to provide adequate security in the community, adding that the situation was becoming worrisome to residents of the community. NAN reports that vehicles have to be diverted through Kuje-Airport road to get to access Gwagwalada from Kuje. The police also arrived at the scene and talked to the youths to sheath their sword as necessary steps had been taken to address the issue. The Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal says the Peoples Democratic Party should give its presidential ticket to a candidate that can win the election, not minding what part of the country the candidate comes from. “I’m appealing to my party that we should be talking about how to win the election. Not just not zoning of where the President is coming from,” Mr Tambuwal said. He added that “The President can come from wherever provided he has the capacity and competence to fix Nigeria of the moment. The Nigeria of 1998 is different from the Nigeria of 2023.” Mr Tambuwal made this statement in an interview with Channels TV on Tuesday, citing how the All Progressives Congress won the 2015 election by strategically picking President Muhammadu Buhari as its candidate. “As I said before, APC in 2015, deliberately out of strategy sort out President Muhammadu Buhari from Katsina state. Meanwhile, the last president from the Northern part of Nigeria was Umaru Musa Yar’Adua from the same Katsina State. “Because they believe they can win the election with him. It is now the APC is talking about zoning. When they were looking for Presidency and power, they didn’t talk about zoning. They got someone they believe could check the box at that moment and deliver,” Mr Tambuwal said. The governor’s comment comes amid agitation for the PDP to zone its presidential ticket to the south. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/03/forget-zoning-give-ticket-to-who-can-win-tambuwal-tells-pdp/ |

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, deferred hearing on the application seeking to extradite the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Abba Kyari to the United States of America, USA, to face trial over his alleged involvement with a notorious internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, till April 27. Kyari is wanted in the U.S. to stand trial for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft. A grand jury had on April 29, 2021, filed an indictment against him with the approval of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, after which a warrant was issued for his arrest. The application for his extradition was brought before the court by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN. Malami said the extradition application was based on a request by the Diplomatic Representative of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja for Kyari to be surrendered for trial. The AGF, in an affidavit that was filed in support of the extradition application, said he was satisfied that the offence in respect of which Kyari’s surrender was sought, is not political or trivial. He said he was also satisfied that the request for Kyari to be surrendered, was not made to persecute or punish him on account of his race, religion, nationality or political opinions, but in good faith and the interest of justice. According to him, Kyari, “if surrendered, will not be prejudiced at his trial and will not be punished, detained or restricted in his personal liberty, by reason of his race, nationality or political opinions”, adding that having regard to all the circumstances in which the alleged offence was committed, it would not be unjust or oppressive, or severe a punishment, to surrender him. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/03/hushpuppi-court-shifts-hearing-on-abba-kyaris-extradition-to-us-till-april-27/ |
The Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (retd.), on Thursday, said the Federal Government knew that the killing of Chad’s President, Idriss Deby, was capable of causing security problems for Nigeria and other neighbouring countries. The minister, who spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja during the weekly briefing organised by the presidential communication team, said government feared that insecurity in Chad could lead to proliferation of illegal arms in Nigeria. Magashi stated these as gunmen kidnapped no fewer than seven people in Oyo and Kaduna states between Wednesday and Thursday. In Oyo State, kidnappers of five occupants of a vehicle are demanding N50m for the release of their victims, who were abducted on the Igboora-Eruwa road on Wednesday night. In Kaduna State, health workers have threatened to go on strike if the state government fails to ensure the release of two nurses who were abducted on Thursday morning. Apparently preparing the minds of Nigerians for the implications of the recent incident in Chad, where Deby died as a result of the injuries he sustained in a battle with the country’s rebels, the minister stated that Nigeria would be hit most by the development. He said, “When we heard of this unfortunate killing of the Chadian President, we knew that the problem is bound to be replicated among neigbouring countries and Nigeria will be hit most by his absence. “If there is insecurity in Chad, there will be a lot of problems. But thank God, we have a lot of military activities with the Chad, Niger and Cameroon. “So, under the aegis of the Multinational Joint Task Force, all these countries, including Chad, are contributing soldiers for the operation (against Boko Haram insurgents). “We hope that very soon, we will find a secure way for the continuation of the activities we are supposed to be doing. “The problem is now going to be aggravated because we are not sure the direction that country ( Chad) is going to face. “But I assure you that we are mindful of our borders. We are mindful of the development (in Chad)…We are beefing up security at all borders to ensure that refugees do not flow into the country.” The minister said the Federal Government was also afraid about possible proliferation of weapons as a result of the development in Chad. https://punchng.com/nigeria-fears-arms-influx-over-idriss-debys-death/ |

U.S President Joe Biden on his first day in office issued some executive orders undoing some of former President Donald Trump’s policies. Among the 17 executive orders and presidential actions Biden signed on Wednesday were the order to end travel restrictions and immigration from countries including Nigeria, Eritrea, Yemen, Sudan and others. “There’s no time to waste,” Biden said before signing the executive orders in the White House. “These are just all starting points,” he added. The American Civil Liberties Union, a non-profit civil rights organisation, applauded the move calling the travel policy a “cruel Muslim ban that targeted Africans.” However, the ban was changed, in part due to legal challenges, and included some non majority-Muslim nations. President Biden described the policy as discriminatory and an affront to the country’s values. The President has also sent a bill to Congress to overhaul the country’s immigration system, his team said earlier. The legislation aims to provide pathways to US citizenship for undocumented people, address the causes of migration and speed up the reunification of families after children were separated from parents at the US border with Mexico. https://thenationonlineng.net/biden-cancels-travel-ban-on-nigeria-eritrea-sudan-others/?fbclid=IwAR3fgc1WGAllcHHYEuRGr2Ni-Lg-K00szSrN-rsUu8eeZgcqoB6j_TY6QvY |
