The President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Bobboi Kaigama, announced on Wednesday that a new amount agreed on by the Federal Government and labour to serve as Nigeria’s new minimum wage would be announced next month. Bobboi, who made the disclosure in an interview with the labour correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, said that the committee working on the minimum wage had almost concluded negotiations on the matter. The Federal Government had set a September date to roll out a new minimum wage for workers, although the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, was recently reported as “double-speaking’’ on the issue. Civil servants in Nigeria are eagerly awaiting a wage increase after years of enduring a wage structure, described by analysts as one of the lowest in the world. But public office holders in Africa’s most populous nation, including members of the bi-cameral parliament enjoy some of the biggest wages in the world, according to analysts. Kaigama said that a tripartite committee meeting was holding on Wednesday in Abuja but refused to elaborate on issues being discussed at the meeting. “The tripartite meeting is holding today but I do not want to pre-empt the outcome or the level we have reached in our discussions, otherwise there will be unnecessary anxiety. ”But by the end of August, I am assuring you that workers will know what the agreed new minimum wage will be, ” he said. On November 22, 2017, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the appointment of a 30-member committee to work out a new minimum wage. He inaugurated the committee on November 27. Buhari was, subsequently, hailed by workers for listening to their cries for a review of the current N18, 000 minimum wage put in place by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011. The labour movement, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the TUC had previously demanded N56, 000 as new minimum wage. However, the President of the NLC, Mr Ayuba Wabba later submitted a memorandum to the wage committee, demanding N66, 500 “living wage’’. Wabba said the living wage was necessary to restore confidence for workers, whom he said, had been devastated by years of exploitation and enduring slave wage. The committee negotiating the new wage is made up of representatives of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, the TUC/NLC and the government, represented by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment. http://punchng.com/workers-to-know-new-minimum-wage-in-august-says-tuc/ |

The detained former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), has met all the bail conditions imposed on him by the Federal High Court in Abuja on July 2, 2018, his lawyer, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), told The PUNCH on Tuesday. Raji said that a letter by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court confirming that Dasuki had fulfilled all the bail conditions would today (Tuesday) be presented to the Department of State Service which has been holding him in custody since December 29, 2015. The lawyer, responding to The PUNCH’s inquiry about the status of Dasuki’s bid to meet the bail conditions, Raji said in a text message sent to our correspondent that the ex-NSA was expected to be released as soon as the DCR’s letter was delivered to the DSS on Tuesday morning. Raji’s text message sent to The PUNCH read, “The letter written by DCR confirming that all conditions for the bail have been met will be delivered to DSS this morning. “Upon delivery of the letter, the DSS is to release him in line with the order of the court.” The Federal High Court in Abuja had on July 2 granted bail to Dasuki from the custody of the Department of State Service, where he had been detained for two and a half years. Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, who granted bail to Dasuki in the sum of N200m with two sureties in like sum, ruled that “the long and continued detention” of the applicant since December 29, 2015, could not be justified. Although the judge rejected Dasuki’s prayer for a public apology and an award of N5bn compensation, she rejected all the grounds canvassed by the three respondents to justify the ex-NSA’s continued detention. Apart from granting bail to the applicant in the sum of N200m with two sureties in like sum, the judge also attached other bail conditions including, that the sureties must be residents of Abuja. She said the sureties could be civil servants not less than Grade Level 16 in the employment of the Federal Government or private citizens not employed by government. If the sureties are Federal Government employees, they will deposit the certified copies of their letters of appointment and last promotion letters with the court, the judge said. But the judge said if they are private citizens who are not employed by the Federal Government, they must own properties in the Abuja metropolis and must submit the original title documents to the registry of the court. Such sureties are also to submit to the court, their evidence of tax payments the years 2015, 2016 and 2017. The judge also ordered that either of one of two sureties to be presented or Dasuki himself, should pay the sum of N100m to the court’s account which could only be taken back after the completion of the case against him, to guarantee the bail. While the court ordered that Dasuki’s passport must remain in the custody of the court, it also ordered bailiffs to verify the addresses of the sureties. The judge also ruled that should the DSS have cause to question Dasuki after his release, he could only be invited and questioned between 9am and 6pm only on weekdays. The judgment came about one year and nine months after the Economic Community of West African States Court of Justice in Abuja, in its own verdict delivered on October 4, 2016, ordering his unconditional release from illegal custody but which the DSS did not obey. http://punchng.com/dasuki-fulfills-bail-conditions-should-be-released-today-lawyer/

The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, has directed that the alleged N2.9bn fraud case of a former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, must be concluded before the end of September this year. The trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, who was among the 12 high court judges recently elevated to the Court of Appeal, said this on Monday at the resumed proceedings in the case at the Federal High Court in Lagos. Though all judges, except those designated as vacation judges, have proceeded on their annual vacation, which will end in September, Justice Idris has stayed back to hear Kalu’s case, presumably to conclude it before September when he would get busy at the Court of Appeal — his new duty post. Kalu’s lawyer, Prof. Awa Kalu (SAN), had earlier written to the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Bulkachuwa, to release Justice Idris to enable him to conclude hearing of Kalu’s case, which is already at an advanced stage. The defence counsel made the request pursuant to Section 396(7) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, which allows a high court judge elevated to the Court of Appeal to conclude all partly-heard cases in his docket at the high court. At the Monday proceedings, the prosecuting counsel for the Federal Government, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), and other defence counsel, Chief K.C. Nwofor (SAN) and Solo Akuma (SAN), gave their consent that Justice Idris should conclude the case despite his elevation to the Court of Appeal. Kalu, who was Abia State governor between 1999 and 2007, is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly diverting N2.9bn from the state’s treasury. He was charged alongside his company, Slok Nigeria Limited, and Ude Udeogu, who served under him as the Director of Finance and Account, Abia State Government House. The defendants have, however, pleaded not guilty to the 34 charges pressed against them. The prosecution had, on May 11, 2018, closed its case; while the defence counsel hinted that they would file no-case submissions in response to the charges. However, the prosecutor, Jacobs, later sought to amend the charges and re-arraign the ex-governor and his co-defendants — a move that the defence counsel resisted. While the defence counsel contended that the prosecution could not amend the charges without first obtaining the leave of the court to do do, the prosecutor maintained that the leave of the court was not necessary. Justice Idris adjourned till Tuesday, July 17, for ruling. Cc: lalasticlala http://punchng.com/n2-9bn-fraud-judge-gets-september-deadline-to-conclude-orji-kalus-trial/ |

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Operations, Mr. Habilal Joshak, has said the security details of important personalities in Ekiti will be withdrawn on Saturday — the day of governorship election. The Police boss added that no party will be allowed to hold any political rally that is not approved by the Police until the election is held. Addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, Joshak said he will work with one Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. H.H. Karma; and three other Commissioners of Police — Ali Janga, J.B. Kokumo and G.B. Umar — who would man each of the senatorial districts in the state. Joshak said they have contacted security details of Governor Fayose and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and other top government officials to report at 6am at the Police headquarters in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday. “We won’t allow anybody to go to the polling booth with armed men, because it will be a breach of the Electoral Act. “We have contacted them and they have to be here before election commences. This election must not be compromised. “They will be documented and whoever defies this will be sanctioned, because they have been contacted,” he warned. http://punchng.com/police-to-withdraw-fayose-fayemis-security-dig-joshak/ |
