The absence of Justice Gideon Kurada of a Kaduna High Court on Thursday staled the arraignment of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibrahim el-Zakzaky; and his wife, Zeenat, over alleged culpable homicide. The Kaduna State Government had brought eight charge against the IMN leader and his wife. They are being charged for alleged conspiracy, abating culpable homicide and other related offences. Journalists were, however, stopped by the Police from entering the court for the proceedings. El- Zakzaky’s counsel, Femi Falana (SAN), informed the News Agency of Nigeria that the judge was “unavoidably absent” to take the case. He said both the prosecuting and defence counsels have decided and picked July 11 as the next adjourned date. Falana decried the action of Police stopping journalists and commuters who were interested in the case from witnessing the proceedings. He said that there was no law in the country which stops people from witnessing the proceedings of a trial of any citizen. NAN reports that on May 15, el-Zakzaky and his wife were brought to court for arraignment. The prosecuting counsel, Dari Bayero, however, asked for more time to enable the prosecution serve the two other persons standing trial with the Shiite’s leader. Former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Kayode Fayemi, on Wednesday formally bowed out of office with a special valedictory session held in his honour. President Muhammadu Buhari led other members of the Federal Executive Council to bid the Ekiti State governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress farewell at a brief event held inside the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The session was held before the start of the weekly meeting of the FEC presided over by Buhari. Describing Fayemi as a man of sound intellect, the President noted that the minister’s contributions helped the present administration to achieve progress, especially in the solid minerals sector. Buhari again made a case for voter education so that people would get the Permanent Voters Card to elect candidates of their choice at all levels. Fayemi’s former colleagues in the cabinet expressed the belief that he has what he takes to rescue his state. The former minister thanked Buhari and his colleagues for the honour. The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Monday kept mum after a meeting he had with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN). When State House correspondents approached the police boss at the end of the meeting, he declined comment. The meeting was held about 24 hours after police authorities summoned the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, over his alleged relationship with suspects arrested following the April 5 bank robbery in Offa, Kwara State. It also came shortly after the DSS withdrew some of its men attached to Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara. The Presidency has lambasted the embattled Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye for rebuking President Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari’s Personal Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie said Melaye needs mental evaluation. Recall that the embattled lawmaker had yesterday challenged Buhari to apologize to the National Assembly over his recent comment that some lawmakers have spent a long time without doing anything. Speaking in Abuja, last week, Buhari had wondered what members of the National Assembly have been doing, even when some of them have spent over a decade as lawmakers. Reacting, the embattled lawmaker described Buhari’s comment as “unpresidential” and “unconstitutional.” However, Onochie said soon, Melaye will come to terms with the fact that the National Assembly “doesn’t belong to him.” In a tweet, Onochie wrote: “It’s an absurdity that Melaye, who is standing trial for alleged criminal offences, who in a suicide bid, jumped out of a moving vehicle and whose obsessive compulsion disorder makes him think he owns the Nass, should be allowed to return to d Senate without proper mental evaluation. “One day, Dino Melaye, will come to terms that the Nass doesn’t belong to him. In his delusional state and on bail, he’s shamefully back to his clowning. “I would hope that he confines his rascality to unsuccessfully suppressing opposing views in the Senate. Let the President be.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/06/01/dino-melaye-needs-mental-evaluation-presidency-rebukes-senator-attacking-buhari/

Justice Chiwendu Nworgu of the High Court in Port Harcourt has set aside the Ward, Local government and State Congresses of the All Progressives Congress, APC, that led to the emergence of Ojukaye Flag Amachree as Chairman of the Rivers state chapter. Justice Nworgu in an elaborate ruling said the All Progressive Congress should return to status quo of May 11th, 2018. The court in the ruling also restrained officers, agents and leaders of APC from conducting any congress in Rivers state pending determination of the main suit. Nworgu condemned the action of leaders of APC for flouting the order of court by conducting the congresses, adding that holding the congresses was a calculated attempt by the APC to disgrace, ridicule and portray the court as a dog that barks and not bite. The Judge also said the High Court does not have the records of stay of proceedings pending at the court of appeal just as he emphasized that a stay of proceedings is not automatic. He finally ruled that the APC in Rivers state was properly served, adding that there was no record before the court that shows that the Legal Adviser of the Party who received the motion on notice was not a member of APC. “What you have done is a Calculated attempt to ridicule the judiciary. The act of Tuduru Edeh, Lawyer to the respondent was unprofessional. He tried to force the hand of the court with the claim of an Appeal. There’s no official record of appeal before the court. “No party has the right to take the matter into his own hands of a matter be for the court. Persons must obey the order of court no matter how it is presented as long as it was lawfully made. It is the obligation for parties to obey a court order until it discharged. “The precedent of action of the respondents by conducting the congress in the pendency of the suit is an attempt to frustrate the matter. It is a design to ridicule the court which the court will resist and tackle head on to protect the integrity of Nigeria,” Justice Nworgu said. The matter was adjourned to June 26th for hearing of originating summons. Recall that after weeks of controversy, the APC rescheduled its Ward, Local Government and State congresses which held on May 19th, 20th and 21st and produced Ojukaye Flag Amachree as Chairman of the party in Rivers state. cC: lalasticlala http://dailypost.ng/2018/05/30/breaking-court-nullifies-apc-congresses-rivers-state-says-fraudulent/ |
The Nigeria Police Force has arrested the Personal Assistant to the Governor of Kwara State on Political Matters (Kwara South) Mr. Alabi Olalekan. DAILY POST was informed that Olalekan was arrested Tuesday night from his residence in Ilorin. Operatives were said to have immediately taken him to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. A reliable source in the Kwara government confirmed the development to our correspondent on Wednesday. “Yes, we understand the police invited him to explain his role as one of the channels of the administration’s youth empowerment schemes,” said the source. It’s not clear if the arrest is connected with the face-off between the Police and the camp of Senate President, Bukola Saraki/Governor Ahmed. On May 17, Ahmed had described as false and misleading, insinuations linking him and Saraki with the suspected cultists arrested in Ilorin, the state capital, and transferred by the Nigeria Police to Abuja. He also denied any knowledge of any intention to harm any individual, stressing that the political leadership in the state has never used violence as a political tool. http://dailypost.ng/2018/05/30/breaking-police-arrest-kwara-govs-aide-alabi-olalekan/ |
