Education › Sit-At-Home: Private Schools Turn Saturdays To Working Days In Enugu by Doraty1(op): 9:21am On Oct 16, 2021 |
Some private schools in Enugu State now hold classes on Saturdays following the ‘collapse’ of academic activities on Mondays as a result of the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The group instituted the order to press home their demand for the release of their leader Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu is facing treason charges for running a proscribed organisation.
Some of the school proprietors interviewed warned against mentioning their names and their schools for security reasons.
One of them, located at Emene, Enugu, said, “It is an internal measure adopted by the school management and the parents to make up for lost grounds. The academic curriculum runs whether we go to school or not. And the pupils and students write the same external exams as their counterparts outside this region.
“Instead of allowing Mondays to waste just like that, we devised a means. Our supposed academic activities on Mondays now hold on Saturdays.”
A principal of a private school, along University Market road at Nsukka, on condition of anonymity, said, “We won’t allow the education of our children to die just like that. As such, we deliberated on the way forward, and converted our Mondays to Saturdays. That is the only way we fill the vacuum of the sit-at-home. We wouldn’t like to risk any child’s life.”
A parent, Cajethan Odo, said, “It is to the advantage of pupils and parents. We pay the school fees accordingly. So, we commend the school authorities for the innovations. I am personally happy.”
A pupil in one of the schools said she was happy. In her words, “On Saturdays, we come to school. We learn what we usually learn on Mondays. I am happy because all my friends come to school.”
THE WHISTLER reports that despite the cancellation of the sit-at-home order by the IPOB, general activities on Mondays in the southeast region of the country have remained paralysed as unknown gunmen use Mondays to perpetrate their activities. https://thewhistler.ng/sit-at-home-private-schools-turn-saturdays-to-working-days-in-enugu/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

The panel chairperson, Doris Okuwobi, while handing out the cheques to the victims, said it is part of the gesture of the state government to ease victims of pain suffered from the hands of brutal police officers.
Five petitioners were awarded N10 million each as compensation over the extrajudicial killing of their family members.

The family of Charles Otoo also narrated how he was shot by officers attached to Ojodu Police Division in the evening of October 21 last year.
Sunday Shoyemi, a consultant pathology at LASUTH, also confirmed to the judicial panel that a bullet was extracted from the body of the deceased.

Politics › It’s An Insult Comparing Me To Hushpuppi, Says Jailed Invictus Obi by Doraty1(op): 5:25am On Sep 29, 2021 |
Convicted fraudster, Obinwanne Okeke, better known as Invictus, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence in a United States prison for $11m fraud, says it is insulting comparing him with self professed fraudster, Ramon Abass, aka Hushpuppi, Yahoo News reports.
Invictus said while he took to fraud in order to empower the less fortunate in Nigeria, Hushpuppi defrauded people in order to show off on social media.
While Invictus has been convicted, Hushpuppi is facing criminal charges for conspiracy to launder money obtained from business email compromise frauds and other scams, including schemes that defrauded a US law firm of about $40m, illegally transferred $14.7m from a foreign financial institution and targeted to steal $124m from an English football club until his arrest by the Dubai Police in June 2020 and his extradition to the US
Responding to a question on his similarity with Hushpuppi, Invictus said, “It’s insulting. Hushpuppi and I are not on the same level. Hushpuppi could never achieve what I achieved. He cannot run a business and we are not similar in any way. He was out to please the crowd, I was out to change lives, create jobs and conquer the business world. I have done so much for my community back home with my charity foundation, which lives has he helped? Nobody.”
When asked if he disliked Hushpuppi, Invictus responded, “No I have never met him, but I just find the continued comparison very annoying. Our impact on the world is very different. I have made a much more positive contribution to society than he has.”
Invictus, who was named on Forbes Africa 30 under 30 in 2016, also went down memory lane, narrating how he became a fraudster.
He added, “I was doing a little here and there but the level changed through this one particular friend I used to look up to. I visited him one day and he was living very comfortably with three new cars and a huge house at a young age. When at his house I noticed him on a website www.vionz.to that was selling crypto and money highways.
Why Hushpuppi's account remains active, according to Instagram Hushpuppi: Buhari will determine Abba Kyari’s fate, says minister Hushpuppi: PSC gets report, Kyari may face disciplinary panel “I asked him about the website and he showed me that he buys bank and crypto logins from there and easily withdraws above $20,000 at a time; that’s how he was funding his lifestyle. In 15 minutes he demonstrated it to me and from there I tried it myself when I got home.
“After successfully doing my first transfer so easily, it was hard to stop after that. From there I got introduced to other money making schemes that got me where I am today.”
On what he missed the most about the outside world, Invictus said he missed his family and his business. https://punchng.com/its-an-insult-comparing-me-to-hushpuppi-says-jailed-invictus-obi/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter&&utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter&__twitter_impression=true

NYSC › NYSC Admits Advice On Ransom Payment On Pamphlets, Begins Probe by Doraty1(op): 2:58pm On Sep 24, 2021 |
In what appears to be a bold volte-face, the authorities at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have admitted that copies of its pamphlets containing security tips for staff and corps members contain the “embarrassing” clause that advises corps members to prepare for ransom payment if abducted.
The organisation, however, noted that it realised that different copies of the pamphlets are in circulation with some containing the clause and others not.
The NYSC spokesperson, Adenike Adeyemi, in a terse message to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday noted that the organisation was already investigating the situation.
The reaction followed this newspaper’s insistence that copies in its possession contain the clause, and queries the rationale behind the hurried rebuttal earlier issued by the organisation on the matter.
Mrs Adeyemi, in a short response, simply wrote; “We realised different copies are in circulation. We are investigating.”
Backstory On Thursday, the page containing the advice for the corps and staff on reaching out to the family and friends when plying such routes it described as “high risk” had flooded the social media.
The handbook, which is titled; “Security Awareness and Education Handbook For Corps Members and Staff,” on its page 56, advised both corps members and (and staff) travelling on “high-risk” roads to alert their “family members, friends and colleagues to have someone on hand to pay off the ransom that could be demanded” in case they are kidnapped.
The document lists such roads to include “Abuja-Kaduna, Abuja-Lokoja-Okene, or Aba-Port Harcourt” roads.
The document is produced by Watchcon Security Consultancy Services – a private security outfit, in collaboration with the headquarters of the National Youths Service Corps.
More tips The pamphlet, on page 57, advises both the staff and corps members on how to conduct themselves when kidnapped, saying; “Do not antagonise your captors, be polite and operate with reasonable regards.”
It also advises the corps members and its staff to show reasonable cooperation to the abductors, and that they should “establish personal relationship with your abductors as soon as possible.”
It further added; “The kidnappers may ask for contact persons, do not mention your place of work, but your close friends and parents. They will reach them to negotiate for your release.
“Advise your friends involved in the negotiations, they should be friendly with the captors. ' “Take no risk by attempting to escape,” even as it urges abductees not to attempt to be a hero making making efforts to escape.
“Make no statement to the media after your release without official clearance but share your experience with close associates,” it further counsels.
Rebuttal But in its statement issued earlier on the matter, a copy of which it made available to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday, NYSC described the clause in circulation as the handiwork of mischief-makers.
The reads in part; “The attention of Management of the National Youth Sevice Corps has been drawn to a fake release making the rounds on the social media to the effect that Corps Members travelling on ” high risk roads” should alert their families, friends and colleagues in order to have somebody to pay off the ransom that could be demanded in the event of being kidnapped.
“Management wishes to emphatically state that the clause mischievously quoted is not embedded in NYSC Security Tips pamphlet which was put together by a highly respected retired security expert.
“Management wishes to appeal to the general public to always clarify issues with the Scheme.”
The organisation, therefore, advises Nigerians to always verify things before sharing them on social media, saying it “has offices in all the states of the federation, as well as the 774 Local Government Areas in the country for enquiries.”
“Please, be wary of falling prey to the antics of mischief makers out to ridicule the Scheme,” it added.
Backlash Following the discovery of the clause, Nigerians have flooded the social media including Twitter, which was banned by the Nigerian government, to criticise the document.
Many also described the rebuttal by the organisation as an “open lie”, saying they were shocked that a public organisation would be so bold to continue its defence in the face of clear evidence to the contrary. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/486560-just-in-nysc-admits-pamphlets-contain-advice-on-ransom-payment-begins-probe.html

Crime › Banks Shut Down In Ogun Over Armed Robbers’ Threat by Doraty1(op): 2:04pm On Sep 24, 2021 |
Commercial banks in Ijebu – Ode, Ogun State have closed operations for the fear of being attacked by armed robbers.
Daily Trust gathered that banks have closed shops against customers since Monday following letters allegedly sent to some of them by the suspected robbers.
The development, which has left some residents and customers stranded, was seen as a proactive measure by the bankers, our correspondent understands.
Sources said the banks maintained that they would only resume operations if the Ogun State Government assisted the police with armoured personnel carriers to be mounted close to their branches.
Some residents of Ijebu-Ode said they have been travelling to places like Sagamu, Abeokuta and others to deposit or withdraw money.
A Point-of-Sale (POS) operator, who identified himself as Salam, said the development would have adverse effects on the economic activities of the area.
He said: “We withdraw money from banks to pay our customers and we also deposit in the bank when we have large sums of money in our kitty.
“If the banks are not opening, it will negatively affect us.
“In fact, it is affecting me already. I have been going to Sagamu to make withdrawals. It is bad.”
The spokesman of the Police Command in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said there was no reason for fear of attacks, saying the police had assured the banks and residents of their safety.
He said: “They are just entertaining fear where there is none; even the Area Commander and the DPOs have told them that there is no need to fear.
“Why should they be afraid because there are no Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC)? Even if the APCs are working, is it not the police that will operate them?
“The police are on ground to provide adequate security of lives and property, they are the ones that know why they are entertaining fear.
“We have assured them of their protection and our presence everywhere in Ijebu-Ode and everywhere in Ogun state. There is no reason to be panicking.” https://dailytrust.com/banks-shut-down-in-ogun-over-armed-robbers-threat

NYSC › Who Is Lying? NYSC Denies Telling Corpers To Prepare Ransom by Doraty1(op): 9:34am On Sep 24, 2021 |
The National Youth Service Corps has denied advising corps members to be ready to pay abduction-for-ransom syndicates currently on a rampage across Nigeria.
NYSC issued the rebuttal after a security advisory allegedly introduced in March 2021 trended on social media.
According to images on social media, the Security Awareness and Education Handbook for Corps Members and Staff said between pages 58 and 59 reads:
“When travelling in high-risk roads such as Abuja-Kaduna, Abuja-Lokoja-Okene or Aba-Port-Harcourt road, then alert your family members, friends and colleagues in order to have someone on hand to pay off the ransom that could be demanded.”
However, NYSC described the release as fake.
The rebuttal by NYSC reads:
“The attention of Management of the National Youth Sevice Corps has been drawn to a fake release making the rounds on the social media to the effect that Corps Members travelling on “high-risk roads” should alert their families, friends and colleagues in order to have somebody to pay off the ransom that could be demanded in the event of being kidnapped.
“The management wishes to emphatically state that the clause quoted is not embedded in NYSC Security Tips pamphlet which was put together by a highly respected retired security expert.
“The management wishes to appeal to the general public to always clarify issues with the Scheme.
“Please, be wary of falling prey to the antics of mischief-makers out to ridicule the Scheme.
Management shall continue to prioritize the security and welfare of Corps Members and staff at all times.
However, corps members disagree with the management of the National Youth Sevice Corps.
The corps members alleged that they receive their hardcopies in March 2021 and it contains the ransom advisory.
John Elochukwu, who recently completed his service, said:
“I received my own copy in March 2021 before I left the camp.
“I did not even read the document until I saw online comments and I went to open my own copy to check and found that the paragraphs were exactly the same as those posted online.”
Another corps member who identified himself as Mattew also shared his copy and wrote: “This should be reviewed.”
Theophilus Danjuma wrote: NYSC “didn’t review the book before printing.”
However, it was also observed that NYSC deleted some comments and also limited who could comment on their Facebook post. https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2021/09/24/who-is-lying-nysc-denies-telling-corpers-to-prepare-ransom/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&=1&__twitter_impression=true

Politics › Precious Chikwendu Files N800m Suit Against IGP, Others by Doraty1(op): 7:06pm On Sep 23, 2021 |
…..applies for a restraining order Ms Precious Chikwendu, the estranged wife of the former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja to secure a restraining order against him.
Chikwendu, in the suit she filed through her team of lawyers led by Mr Abdul-Aziz Jimoh, also cited the Inspector General of Police, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Force CID, Commissioner of Police FCT, and the OC Legal (CID) FCT Command, CSP James Idachaba, as Respondents in the matter.
She is praying the court to restrain her former husband from using the other Respondents to intimidate or harass her in any form whatsoever, pending the hearing and determination of an earlier suit marked No CV/372/2021, which she filed to take custody of four children she had for the former Minister.
Aside from seeking the enforcement of her fundamental rights, the Applicant, equally prayed the court to award her the sum of N800million, to be paid by the Respondents, jointly and severally.
Chikwendu told the court that she is apprehensive of an imminent violation of her fundamental rights in the actualization of threats to her life by the erstwhile Minister and in the face of the refusal of the 1st to the 3rd Respondents (IGP, DIG Force CID and CP FCT) to investigate her genuine petitions of threat to life against the 5th respondent (Fani-Kayode).
She is seeking a declaration that an invitation letter dated March 10, 2021, which was written by the 4th Respondent (Idachaba) amounts to a rise by the 5th Respondent in cahoots with the 1st to 4th respondents, to stultify and interpose in Suit No CV/372/2021 and to orchestrate a contravention of her fundamental rights as enshrined in Part IV of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999(as amended) by imminent unlawful harassment by invitation, interrogation, molestation and detention.
More so, the Applicant prayed the court to declare that she is not bound to honour the invitation of the 1st to 4th Respondents in relation to a purported conspiracy and forgery of court records during the pendency of the suit between her and the 5th Respondent (Fani-Kayode).
In an affidavit she personally deposed to in support of the application, Chikwendu, averred; “That I was in a most tempestuous and violent relationship with the 5th respondent (Fani-Kayode), a qualified legal practitioner, a politician and a former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The 5th respondent and I have four (4) children together and I am forcefully separated from our children who are all minors.
“Consequent upon the unbridled violence perpetrated against me by the 5th respondent and the forceful separation from our children, I filled a suit in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with suit no CV/372/2021.
“Rather than allow the contending matters placed before the FCT High Court to be determined by the Honorable Court, the 5th respondent has persisted in using the police officers under the control of the 1st respondent( IGP) and supervised by the 2nd respondent (Commissioner of Police FCT) incessantly to intimidate and harass me with a view to interfering in the adjudicatory powers of a competent court of justice.
“That the 5th respondent, in cahoots with his counsel, being legal practitioners and officers of the court contrived a purported petition against me alleging forgery and falsification of court records in relation to the matter pending before the FCT High Court”.
The Applicant stated that she is fearful of her life, alleging that the 5th Respondent had been bragging that he could do anything to her and nothing would happen, adding
She told the court that in spite of several petitions she wrote to the 1st Respondent (IGP) alleging threats to her life by the 5th Respondent, he refused to act on the petitions.
The Applicant said she had also petitioned the Commissioner of Police FCT, alleging threats to her life by the 5th Respondent and that the Commissioner has refused to act on her petition, thus prompting her to approach the court to enforce her fundamental rights.
Meantime, no date has been fixed for hearing of the suit FHC/ABJ/08/428/2021. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/09/fani-kayodes-ex-wife-files-n800m-suit-against-igp-others/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

There was pandemonium in Birshin Fulani, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis when gunmen invaded the area and allegedly kidnapped a nursing mother, Rukayyat Odedoyin.
According to neighbours, the kidnappers who were about 10 in number invaded the area about 12am and forced themselves into the building by breaking the main door before gaining entrance into the house.
After succeeding in breaking into the house, they were said to have gone away with the woman whose husband had just been transferred to Kaduna State.
“About 12 midnight, we started hearing sporadic gunshots from different directions around our house. We woke up and thought of having cover.
“We then heard people jumping the fence trying to gain entrance into the house of our neighbour. They were there from 12 midnight to 1.30 am.
“By the time we came out, they had left with the woman leaving behind her three children,” a neighbour who refused to give her name told journalists.

Politics › Imo Is Capital Of Drug Abuse In Southern Nigeria –NDLEA by Doraty1(op): 4:53am On Sep 15, 2021 |
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has described Imo State as home to the highest incidents of substance abuse in the entire Southern Nigeria. This was contained in a paper presented by the Commander of Narcotics in the Imo State Command of the agency, Olugu Kalu Chinyere, during the 2021 Pharmacy Week of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Imo State.
The paper, which solicited strategic partnership between pharmacists in Imo State and the NDLEA Command in the state, regretted that drug lords have brought ‘the drug war to our door steps’. Olugu pointed out that a recent report by the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) notes that Methamphetamine (meth) production in West Africa is of growing concern to the authorities. She added that Nigeria featured prominently in some of the reports with the South-Eastern states as major sources of Methamphetamine production.
The paper read: “To substantiate the reports, NDLEA Imo State Command has identified and countered illegal diversion of Ephedrine Hydrochlo-ride which is a precursor substance under international legislative control. In the last few years too, we have uncovered and neutralized clandestine laboratories, all sited within the state. This shows that the drug war is already at our door steps. “In a similar vein, it is important to note that substance abuse, especially by youths, is higher in Imo State when compared to other Southern states.” While lamenting the lapses in the supervision and regulation of these drugs and substances, the agency decried the absence of a vital, self-regulating mechanism among stakeholders in the value chain. Responding, the Chairman of the state branch of the PSN, Dr. Stanley Emegwara expressed dismay at the laxity of regulators while noting that there was not much the PSN could do without the approval of the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN. https://www.newtelegraphng.com/imo-is-capital-of-drug-abuse-in-southern-nigeria-ndlea/

Celebrities › Paternity Fraud: Police Invite Uzoamaka Ohiri For Questioning by Doraty1(op): 6:49pm On Sep 08, 2021 |
The Lagos State Police command has invited Uzoamaka Ohiri, the former wife of comedian, Chinedu Ani, a.k.a Nedu, The PUNCH has learnt.
Our correspondent learnt that policemen attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, visited her home in the Ajah area of Lagos State on Tuesday evening, but she was not at home.
They subsequently told the security guard to inform her to report at the SCID on Thursday.
Speaking with The PUNCH on Wednesday, Uzoamaka’s cousin, who identified himself only as Peter, said, “Policemen attached to Panti came to the house on Tuesday evening, but she was not around.
“They asked the security guard to sign a document and then they asked her to come to their station.”
A member of her legal team from Wingman Legal Chambers also informed The PUNCH that the comedian’s ex-wife had been invited.
“It is true. She was asked to report at the SCID tomorrow morning,” he said.
Attempts to speak with Uzoamaka proved abortive, as her telephone line indicated that it has been switched off.
“She may have already been arrested because I have not been able to reach her all day,” said Uzoamaka’s cousin, Peter.
The mother of three has been trending on social media for the last five days after accusing her ex-husband of domestic violence.
In his response to his ex-wife’s allegations, Nedu said he had been the victim of domestic violence, rather than Uzoamaka.

Politics › Defwan Dariye: Police Arrests Killers Of Ex-Governor Of Plateau, Dariye's Father by Doraty1(op): 6:12pm On Sep 08, 2021 |
The Police on Wednesday said they have arrested eight suspects over the kidnap and murder of 93-year-old Mr Defwan Dariye, father of former Governor of Plateau, Mr Joshua Dariye.
The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr Frank Mba, disclosed this during a media briefing in Abuja.
He said the nonagenarian was kidnapped by the suspects and held incommunicado for eight days in a very unhygienic condition.
According to him, after a protracted negotiation, a ransom of N10 million was paid to the kidnappers and rather than setting him free, he was murdered.
Mba said the incident happened in June 2020, adding that after recovering the victim’s body, detectives from the Intelligence Response Unit and other police investigators swung into action to uncover the perpetrators.
“Within the last 30 days, the police were able to make tremendous progress that led to the arrest of the eight key suspects that played major roles in the kidnap and murder of the ex-governor’s father.
“All the suspects, except very few of them, were from the same village in Bokkos Local Government Area with the murdered victim.
“This perhaps explained why they took the very wicked and costly decision of murdering the old man,” he said.
He said the crime was initiated by the eldest suspect, who identified the victim, recruited men that executed the operations and handled the distribution of the ransom.
Mba said three suspects were also arrested on Aug. 28 in a border community between Nasarawa and Taraba after months of intensive monitoring.
He said the suspects were arrested over unlawful procurement, distribution and selling of weapons to end- users who were largely criminals, kidnappers, bandits, terrorists and armed robbers.
According to him, the suspects were arrested after operatives of the Intelligence Response Team mounted a sting operation that was intelligence driven and clinically executed.
Mba said a total of 26 AK47 magazines, one AK49 riffle and its magazines, as well as 14 live ammunition for AK47 riffle, were recovered from the suspects.
He said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigation. https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2021/09/08/arrested-killers-of-dariyes-father-collected-n10m-still-killed-him/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=arrested-killers-of-dariyes-father-collected-n10m-still-killed-him&=1&__twitter_impression=true
