Which Is Better Place To Live US or Europe? Anonymous: ''I personally would say Europe. Places across the world have been more hospitable, I have felt more safe than my home in AMERICA.I am American, my entire life I have been inundated with American customs. I lived in Lisbon for 3 months. Here is Europe vs. America: AMERICA: - pretends to be whatever is trending or hot at the moment because Americans don’t have a common history or pride that bonds the people together - has horrible meth, and drug pockets of insane people trying to threaten steal of harm you. Cops do nothing about it. - viral videos of American cop that beat/ harm/ kill people, that’s half the reason America is so angry right now. PEOPLE are demanding justice. -you have to be careful, who you talk to cause they could have a weapon. That’s how weird it is, you always have to watch your back in the US. - is so repressed, everybody wants to get fake porn star bodies. You cannot topless sun tan without getting Cops called on you. -makes it so difficult to get access to cheap, nutritious food without having to go on far drives, because nobody actually plans for a sustainable future in America. -sprays insane amounts of chemicals into their food sources. I get sick when I eat food in America, because everything is so processed. - doesn’t care about it’s past, now or the future, so it has no foundation for moral intergrity. -has alot of flashy, cheaply and lewdly dressed people. GO TO LAX airport, stand by the curb and you will be in a tornado of insults, curses, yelling and threats in seconds. -has the most materially wealthy people, that are miserable. They complain and are the most entitled, constantly. - has never had a war, or anything really terrible ever happen. They are not grateful or peaceful because they have never had to learn to be. - is a culture of quick, convenience, terrible food and arrogant attitudes. - has the ugliest buildings/ houses I have ever seen. Bad materials, built with no love or pride. They build it quick and cheap, and don’t care about anything other than making money immediately. - is where people meet you, and make automatic snap judgements, instead of just treating you like a human.Europe is really comfortable , being who they are, they know their history and they don’t pretend to be everything. -HAS CONSTANT STRESS, PRESSURE, JUDGEMENTS put on you by society. VERSUS EUROPE—— - has amazing old buildings, art, statues etc mixed with modern new buildings. -has alot of class, how they carry themselves and dress. -loves to socialize. -loves to enjoy life, siestas, long social meals together. - has a rich, history, no matter which country you pick. -has a wealth of ancient remnants there, it is respected. - is more open minded -has decriminalized many things. -is more comfortable with sexuality. -has great, public transports . -has convenient great fresh food/grocery that you can walk to from your home. EUROPE IS WONDERFUL. *****TRUMP Election : It was inhuman, the worst circus I’ve ever seen and I constantly apologized to foreign people that were angry at me, because he is My country’s President. I constantly had to say I disagreed with everything he said or did, I refuse to even watch any of it. I have never seen America more violent, explosive, reactive and just ready to snap at anything, all within this past year. These are my observations why I am ashamed of America, and I feel it would be best to learn from countries who have been around for thousands of years.'' ****************** Bogdan Ceptureanu : ''Depends on what lifestyle you look for, but I prefer Europe. Here is why: Housing. Although smaller is size, housing in Europe in most cases consist of apartment blocks, which build nice and walkable neighborhood, where you can walk or bike to your grocery store, cafe or restaurant. Or you can just go for a walk in a quiet Sunday afternoon. There is also no need for big houses and big backyards, as some apartment complexes have a nice green backyard and maybe a playground for children. Transportation. Public transport is no. 1 choice for commuting to work (and also around the city), so no time wasted on traffic jams at rush hour and you don’t have to stay late in the office to avoid the rush hour. Also, you can bike around the city. You can even live a little farther away from the city and come to work with a sub-urban or regional train. Sometimes you even don’t need to own a car, the combination of public transport, bicycle and a car sharing service can fill all your need regarding going from one place to another. Work-life balance. Usually, the work schedule is 8 hours with rare occasions of overtime, unlike in US. It is expected that you finish your tasks within the normal work time and then go home and enjoy time with your family or friends. On very rare occasions you are bothered with stuff from work in the evening or during the weekends. No guns. I know that in US this is a sign of liberty, but I feel much safer that a maniac doesn’t have access to guns. Food. More authentic and diverse, each culture is bringing their own specific dishes. Fast food chains are not so popular, there are usually for kids and tourists. Normal people usually like to go to a restaurant, and you can find one for all income brackets. Travelling. You can reach very easily and fast another country with a different culture, cuisine, mentality, architecture etc. Also, I consider that you can live with a much lower income than in US - you don’t need to buy a big house, one (or maybe two) car(s) for commuting, money on gas because you have to drive everywhere, you don’t have to pay for healthcare or education.'' ***************** Jack Costner: ''EUROPE is a much better place to live than the USA. Safety: personal firearms are rarely seen, not to mention how police brutality in the USA is insane whereas more people tend to trust police officers in Europe. Healthcare: it costs much less in Europe, and in some countries like Spain it is basiclly free. In addtion, a lot of Americans flee the USA to get treatment in cheaper places. Food: America’s generalized industrial food is far from usual, as Europeans’ diets contain more fresh, natural food. The Mediterranean diet, which is popular in France, Spain, Italy, Greece and is currently spreading out to other countries, is said to be one of the healthier and most balanced in the world. Moreover, fast food restaurants are less frequented. Culture: America might be a mix of different cultures, but in the end everyone acts as “Americans”. However, in Europe you have so many cultures, that keep their traditions, very close to each other. Transport: most of the EU is connected by rail and boasts a huge number of frequencies. Also, flying to other European capitals is much cheaper, as there are a lot of low cost airlines with a lot of competence. Due to the fact that European countries are much smaller that the USA states, huge cities like London, Berlin, Milan, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Munich, Frankfurt, Madrid or Zurich are connected with 1–2 hour flights. History: Europe is called “the old continent” and The United States of America itself was stablished by European immigrants. That’s all I have to say. Globalization: Europe is full of different languages and most of them have the same roots, so learning new languages is much more accessible and easy. Plus, economically speaking, trade in Europe has so much potential as it is full of different markets. Travelling: I have already mentioned how European countries are really close and travelling is cheaper than in the USA. But, on top of that, just by looking at a map you will notice how Europe is closer to other continents and exotic cultures. Flying from, let’s say Paris, to Africa, Middle East, Turkey, India and even China and South-east Asia is much shorter than doing it from the USA, and therefore cheaper. For example, a flight from Frankfort (in the centre of Europe) to Dubai lasts 6h30, whereas flying from New York (not in the centre of the USA) to Dubai lasts 12h30, almost double!! And not to talk about lifestyle, working hours, wages… EUROPE WINS'' ***************** Tshabal: ''Both USA and Europe have their ups and downs, but Europe over-surpasses living in the USA. Here's why: Public transit is far superior, has greater reach and lower time intervals. Sorry but even South Africa puts the US PT system to shame. Even with the country pretty cocked. Tuition fees are much lower in Europe than the US. Depending on which country in the EU, your tuition fees per semester will be around €500-1,000. In general at least. Seems affordable enough. In the US, the aforementioned figure has an extra zero on it. Do many Americans even MAKE this much in a year? (Two semesters in one year) Food laws are much stricter in Europe. Meaning no steroids, hormones, GMOs (mostly), chemicals, additives, etc. There does tend to be a few stories abound where people who travel to Europe for a time and while they "nom" down as much food as they would in America, they tend to lose a couple of kilograms of weight. Oh, and food insecurity barely even registers in the EU. It's only like 1 or 2 percent. The US on the other hand, has a 17% food insecurity rate. Zimbabwe has 15.6% (And people flee out of Zimbabwe for food, among other reasons). Safe to say that the US has the highest food insecurity rate in the industrialized world. Healthcare. Oh boy. Europe and pretty much the rest of the industrialized world can happily smear all over the US on that. People actually flee from the US to recieve medical care overseas. I think they do so in EU as well, but to a much lesser magnitude. A person in EU on average spends a third of what Americans spend on healthcare. European healthcare is also more effective to the dollar. Money. Average incomes are lower in EU than in the US but it is more balanced. The lower and middle classes have more income than their American counterparts while the upper class income varies between "slightly higher and much lower" the higher up the ladder you go. Income inequality is not so much an issue in EU as in the US. Work. Europeans on average are more productive at work, earn more (as mentioned earlier), and work less hours. Average European weekly shift hovers between 30-40 hours a week. Job security is higher in Europe, though unemployment is also higher. Europeans also are given, BY LAW, an average of 1 month of PAID vacation time and sick leave, which is also PAID. Maternity leave varies between nations between 4 months to a year. Also PAID. Though the percentage of income otherwise working varies. In the US, that's not the case. If you are contagious with something that you could also possibly die from, you either come to work or say good bye to your pay (Or job). Such laws in the US are non-existent and the general populace seems to be against it Laws in Europe, while more numerous, are more lenient than in the US. Incarceration rates are much lower and penalties are less severe for breaking most laws, usually a couple hundred Euro fine and/or community service. Crime (and violent crime too) is also lower in most parts of Europe than in the US. Police are also less violent and trigger-happy than their US counterparts. While the police in and around Europe are packing a submachine gun and/or an assault rifle too, they rarely even use their sidearm, only when necessary. Keyword: "Necessary". Europe is not as much car-centric as the US. Cities are denser, have more taller resiential units, tower blocks, flats and high rises. They are also better integrated into the city proper where employment, shopping, entertainment, residencial, etc. are easily reached by public transit or walking distance (<20 minutes). Though gas does cost at least €2 to a liter. Free speech. Can be subjective. Both the US and Europe have such liberties. Though "hate speech" is prohibited in most of EU (and some nations around the world as well, some consider it a contradiction/violation of free speech). Some feel that "free speech" is abused in the US to justify hate rallies, Nazi marches, Islamophobia, anti-communism, white supremacy and other such protests/demonstrations. This exists in Europe as well, though to a lesser extent. Then there's the wiretapping. While both US and EU are guilty of it, the EU perhaps less so. ...And the military. Europe is less patriotic than the United States and not as much pro-war either it seems. The military spending in the EU is about €190~ billion. The US spends between $600 to $650 billion on it's military, which actually supercedes entire GDPs of nations, some even industrialized (It surpasses the national GDP of South Africa at $620 billion, or R7.4 trillion ZAR). It is also worth mentioning that during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the USA temporarily halted relations with France and called France, Italy and Germany the "Axis of Weasels" tdue to their opposition and unwillingness (at the time) to participate in the war against Iraq. Europe is also mostly left-wing. It is somewhat subjective to say it is "better" but the left does tend to favor the "workers" who comprise a majority of any populace. The laws and preceding points do reflect that. Europ also has a growing support for Palestine over Israel. More countries are recognizing the Palestinian Authority as a nation and disdaining Israeli policies of apartheid and military rule. There is a growing sense of a boycott against Israel in Europe as well. A law passed recently in the EU requires all products made in Israel/Palestine to be properly labeled before being allowed for retail. This is similiar to a law also passed in South Africa a few years prior regarding labeling of such products (Sorry SodaStream but no store in Johannesburg or Berlin is going to have a "Made in Israel" labeled product that's actually made in the West Bank stocked on their shelf. Also, its a R1,200 ZAR plastic load of shite <- No effect on legality) The US however is staunchly pro-Israel and actually endorses their Apartheid practise and are even making moves to shut up anyone who dare speak against it. Metric Master Race LOL A few things however are superior in the USA though. Guns. The USA has it in print on the 2nd Amendment. There's a gun culture and they are easier to come by than in most countries, espeically in the EU (Though there are exceptions). This is however somewhat subjective due to cultural differences between Europe and the USA and most Europeans see no real need to procure a firearm. But who doesn't love the feel of a Beretta 92FS in one's hand or hearing the distinct TSHK-TSHK of a shotgun pump? There is indeed a greater cultural diversity in the US overall. Communities of nationalities, religions and ethnicities are existent in all major cities. Entertainment, neighborhoods and options for food reflect that. ROAD TRIP! There is a certain liking to driving for thousands of kilometers between states and seeing a wide array of sights, places and people. (Though the suburban sprawl, car-centric culture and the arse public transit... Yeah) Cost of living is much lower in the USA than in Europe (Though people's wages are stagnating and things becomign more expensive). Gas is cheaper, entertainment is cheaper, computers and mobile phones are cheaper, housing (mostly) is cheaper and food is cheaper too. In many places in the EU, a Big MAC can cost at least €7. WTF. Oh, and taxes are much lower in the USA than in Europe. Again, a bit subjective but European tax money appears to be put to better use. Europe is in many ways superior to the United States to live in, but one can't say the US doesn't have a few perks of its own either.'' ************ Alex Winn: ''I’m assuming you are talking about North America. I’m going to mostly compare it with Western Europe as that is the wealthier part of Europe. Both NA and EU have good and bad parts. For example, many of the Western European countries are very nice, especially the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden) which are basically a paradise on Earth. however some countries like Portugal and Spain are poorer. Same goes for the US. Some states are poorer than others especially in the south. The homicide / crime rate in the US is much higher - you are much more likely to be murdered in the US than you are Europe. Arguably the US is the most dangerous first world country in the world. Some cities have delved into gang violence, such as Chicago, but this is something that all US cities have. The US has a bigger homeless problem. In most cities you will see a lot of homeless people, more often than you would in Western Europe. America is more multicultural. Most European countries are high 80/90% white whilst America is 63% white. Not that this should matter, but just something to consider. America has guns, and therefore has some pretty bad gun crime problems as discussed earlier. Most European countries don’t have guns. America has bigger homes however European homes are arguably of higher quality (made from brick not wood) Both have diverse weather. In the US you could go skiing in Colorado or sunbathing in Florida. Same goes for Europe. Skiing in Sweden or sunbathing in Croatia. Most food in the US is GMO whilst Most European supermarkets have banned GMO food.'' Source: https://www.quora.com/Which-is-better-place-to-live-US-or-Europe

DIT student Taofeeqat Olanlokun, is living in Ireland most of her life, but work priorities means her mother spends most of her time between her native Nigeria and China. Living in Dublin proves complicated... Accents can tell us a lot about people but they don’t always tell the full story. The soft Dublin accent of Taofeeqat Olanlokun would tell the listener she is a Dublin native with a good education and excellent manners. The listener would be correct in discerning this but it does not come close to telling the story of this 17 year old and her family. Taofeeqat moved to Dublin with her mother, father and two older brothers. Her two older brothers are now in Galway and Athlone studying IT and biochemistry respectively. Since moving to Ireland her parents have had two more children to take the number of children to 5. Last January Taofeeqat’s mother moved to Nigeria where she works in fashion retail and despite communicating often Taofeeqat understandably misses her. Taofeeqat’s mother has to alternate between living in Nigeria and China which makes it difficult to get back to Ireland and with Taofeeqat’s dad working as a Taxi driver she needs to help out a lot at home. Nigeria, like many other countries, is affected by terrorism. Boko Haram in particular is a very active terrorist organisation in Nigeria, often in the media for abducting schoolchildren and committing crimes of violence on Christian villages particularly against women. Taofeeqat says she does not often worry about her mother’s safety as the area in which she lives is relatively violence-free. "Where my mam lives there are protestors but they are usually not violent. The problem with Boko Haram is that you don’t know where they will attack next and the government are not doing much to catch them." Having spent most of her life in Ireland but with family in Nigeria, would Taofeeqat consider visiting her family’s homeland? "I would love to visit. My dad and brother went to visit last summer for two months." Life in Nigeria is not what people may think, with a smirk she says: "We don’t live in huts, we have big houses with swimming pools and everything is a lot cheaper over there." Ireland has not provided complete stability for the Olanlokun’s since moving to Ireland; Taofeeqat had two secondary schools, her two older brothers have moved away for college as well as their mother moving back to Nigeria. With one parent at home and two younger brothers’ ages 8 and 14 I get the sense Taofeeqat helps at home. "My dad is the bread winner so we have to help him, I cook when I go home and I make my brothers clean the house," she says. There is no sense of self-pity from Taofeeqat. She speaks constantly with a broad smile and a slight giggle which makes it sound like she’s chatting about one direction and not terrorist groups in the country in which her mother lives. With her families interesting and decorated past covered, we discuss what the future holds. "In 5 years I want to be making films I want to be done with education. I want to make a controversial movie and have diversity of characters in the movies." Taofeeqat speaks with a sense of confidence and possess the right amount of kindness to make you believe she can achieve anything she sets her sights on. Her families proven work rate is instilled in her and she has every opportunity to follow her dreams thanks to her family. Sitting in DIT’s coffee shop Taofeeqat is surrounded by her peers and her friendly smile and exterior reveals none of her fascinating story which she has just shared and which is only just starting.
