Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi receives Xiamen University President

The Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, received Prof. Zhang Zongyi, President of Xiamen University, China, to the university.

During the visit on October 24, 2025, Prof. Zhang led a delegation to the Vice Chancellor's office, where they discussed student progression and training in the Chinese language.
Prof. Zhang expressed gratitude for the warm reception by the university's management.

In her response, Prof. Arinze-Umobi thanked him for the visit, describing it as a significant occasion for the university, assured the delegation of continued collaboration.

The meeting was followed by a tour of the Confucius Institute, where Prof. Zhang conveyed his warm regards regarding the institute's development. He highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between the two universities and emphasized the Confucius Institute's role in meeting the growing local demand for education in Chinese language and culture.

The AVC represented by Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, noted that Confucius Institute, Unizik is proud to collaborate with Xiamen University, and called for continued cooperation

The warm reception featured display including, Traditional Chinese cultural dances and performances were also showcased, including a CI video, Tachi fan, Cross Talk, Rap Face, and "A Grateful Heart."

Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi Receives Transformational Leadership Award

Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has been recognised with the Transformational Leadership Award by the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN). The award ceremony took place in her office on Friday, 24th October 2025.

This prestigious accolade was presented by Dr Ruth Arokoyo, a representative of the CITN National President, describing Prof. Arinze-Umobi’s visionary leadership and her dedication to fostering professional collaborations. The CITN team praised UNIZIK for its significant contributions to advancing education in Taxation, especially following the recent National Universities Commission (NUC) approval of the University’s Taxation program.

In her response, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition and emphasised UNIZIK’s commitment to collaborating with CITN in training, research, and professional development initiatives. This partnership aims to further enhance the field of Taxation and benefit the wider community.

UNIZIK STAFF UNIONS JOIN NATIONWIDE PROTEST OVER UNMET DEMANDS.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Thursday, 9th October 2025, launched a one-day protest against the government's failure to address their demands.

Protesting members of SSANU and NASU gathered at the Multi-Purpose Hall at UNIZIK to call for the release of their entitlements. Placards carried by non-teaching staff featured various inscriptions as they marched around the university, passing from the Multi-Purpose Hall to the Administrative Building Block A and the University Beautiful Gate. They urged the Federal Government to release their entitlements and implement their outstanding demands.

Addressing the press during the protest, the SSANU UNIZIK Chairperson, Comrade Chukwudi Anthonia, described the government’s actions as provoking. She highlighted the unfairness of the situation, particularly the unjust disbursement of the N50 billion Earned Allowance. "The JAC and the Federal Government entered into an agreement in 2009, and the Federal Government has still not fulfilled this agreement," she stated.

She urged the government to take immediate action to prevent further disruptions to university operations and called on the Minister of Education and the Minister of Labour and Productivity to urgently address these issues.

Similarly, Comrade Ikegulu Chukwugozie, the NASU Chairman for the UNIZIK branch, stated that today’s protest marks the beginning of a series of union actions that could lead to a total shutdown of all universities in Nigeria. He referred to the President as a father and reminded him of his statement that universities cannot go on strike under his government. Comrade Ikegulu urged the government to act swiftly to resolve the situation and avoid unnecessary disruptions to academic activities.

The unions' demands include the unjust disbursement of the N50 billion Earned Allowance, delays in the renegotiation of the 2009 Federal Government and NASU/SSANU Agreements, non-payment of two months' outstanding salaries, non-payment of arrears of 25%/35% of salaries, and non-payment of third-party deductions for the two months' salaries (May and June 2022), among other issues.

Earlier in 2022, SSANU and NASU members went on an eight-month strike to press for some of their demands, including a better welfare package. During that strike, all administrative functions within public universities in Nigeria were halted, with hostels, university gates, classrooms, and offices locked and electricity supply cut off by disgruntled non-teaching staff.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) Branch, recently paid a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Registrar, Dr Chinenye Gloria Okeke, in her office on 7th October, 2025.

This visit represents a significant step toward fostering collaboration between the university administration and the non-teaching staff community.

The delegation was led by SSANU Chairperson, Comrade Chukwudi Anthonia, who extended heartfelt congratulations to Dr Okeke on her recent appointment as the substantive Registrar of UNIZIK. In her remarks emphasised the crucial role of cooperation in advancing the interests of both the university administration and the union's members.

"Under my leadership, SSANU UNIZIK is committed to working closely with you to enhance the welfare of our members and the broader non-teaching staff," Comrade Anthonia stated.

In her response, Dr Okeke expressed her sincere gratitude for the visit and the warm welcome. She assured the delegation of her commitment to supporting the union's initiatives and fostering a positive working environment for all. Dr Okeke emphasised the importance of teamwork in achieving the university's goals and acknowledged the invaluable contributions of non-teaching staff.

A notable aspect of the visit was the ceremonial presentation of the SSANU badge to Dr Chinenye Okeke. This symbolises the beginning of a collaborative relationship and highlights her status as a key ally in promoting the interests of non-teaching staff.

Improving Women's Health Outcomes through Evidence-based Medicine: Prof. George Eleje's Research to Reality in the 113th Inaugural Lecture

Professor George Uchenna Eleje, the 113th Inaugural Lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, delivered a compelling discourse on improving women's health outcomes through evidence-based medicine. As a distinguished scholar in feto-maternal medicine and evidence-based medicine, as well as the Director of the Grants Development and Management Office at NAU, his lecture explained the paradigm shift from research to reality.

Addressing a captivated audience at the university's auditorium on Thursday, September 25, 2025, Prof. Eleje emphasised the global significance of enhancing prenatal care and understanding women’s perspectives on health.

He identified key components of medical research, highlighting a book titled "Fundamentals of Systematic Reviews in Research," co-authored with Prof. Oliver Chukwujekwu Ezechi and Prof. Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikechebelu. He also contributed to "Punchline Obstetrics and Gynaecology," which includes insights from 80 medical scholars on advancing safe labour and delivery practices.


This work addresses various topics such as managing infection and parasitic co-morbidities during pregnancy, reducing the burden of viral infections, maternal metabolic health and long-term risks, and improving reproductive care metrics. Additionally, the book covers obstetric surgery risks, maternal outcomes, and innovative strategies for preventing preterm birth, among others.

Prof. Eleje discussed his research achievements, emphasizing his roles in promoting safe childbirth, discovering effective herbal medications, supportive practices for postnatal care during the COVID-19 pandemic, and presenting findings on ulcer treatments and the use of Pre-maquick.

Reflecting on his academic journey, he expressed gratitude to Prof. Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikechebelu and Prof. Samuel Meludo for their pivotal support in his early career.

In his remarks, he encouraged the pursuit of grants and recalled his 2022 publication titled "40 Rules for Proposal and Dissertation Writing," which positioned him on a global platform.

“I dedicate this lecture to all Nigerian women whose stories fuel my commitment. Together, let us move from research to reality, fulfilling the promise of improved women's health outcomes through evidence-based medicine. May this inaugural lecture serve not just as a ceremonial event but as a call for faculty, students, and policymakers to root every decision in rigorous evidence, continue advancing women's health, and ensure our findings truly change the lives of those in need," he concluded.

In closing remarks, the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, represented by Prof. Josephat Ogbuagu, described Prof. George Uchenna Eleje as a noble and renowned scholar whose contributions have significantly impacted students, medical professionals, and the university as a whole. UNIZIK AVC Prof. Carol C. Arinze-Umobi Optimistic About Receiving NUC Approval for New Programs Following Resource Verification Team Visit

It was a busy week for the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, as she hosted two groups from the NUC Resource Verification Team at the university. The team visited from September 14 to 19, 2025, to evaluate the establishment of new programs across various faculties, including Arts, Agriculture, Education, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Medicine.

At the end of their official assessment, the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Angela Ufele-Obiesie, led the team in a meeting with the Acting Vice-Chancellor. During this meeting, she outlined the team's mission and allowed the leaders of the different teams to present their findings, including the challenges encountered during their evaluations.

In the Faculty of Education, four new programs were proposed: Environmental Education (B.Ed.), Social Studies and Civic Education (B.Ed.), Language Art, and Communication Education (B.A.Ed.), and Geography/Education (from the Department of Science Education).

The Faculty of Agriculture aimed to establish two new degrees: Agricultural Economics (B.Sc.) and Agricultural Extension (B.Sc.). Meanwhile, the Department of Architecture planned to launch two programs: Interior Design and Landscape Architecture (B.Sc.).

In the Faculty of Arts, a new program in Theatre Art and Film Studies leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Film Production was proposed, along with a new Folklore program (B.A) from the Department of Music.

The Faculty of Social Sciences, specifically the Department of Mass Communication, verified four proposed programs: Advertising (B.Sc.), Broadcasting (B.Sc.), Development and Communication Studies (Film Production), and Journalism and Media Studies (B.Sc.).

Additionally, the Department of Public Administration submitted two new programs for verification: Local Government and Developmental Studies (B.Sc.) and Employment Relations in Human Resource Management (B.Sc.).

Within the Faculty of Management Sciences, the Department of Banking and Finance proposed two new programs: Insurance (B.Sc.) and Security and Investment Management (B.Sc.).

In the medical field, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.) will be awarded to students upon successful completion of studies, contingent upon the program passing verification and establishment.
The various team leads of the verification exercise earlier expressed their gratitude during the exit interaction, thanking the Vice-Chancellor and the university management for their warm reception. They shared their delight in the university’s leadership while also highlighting several challenges identified during their findings. These included: the need for expansion of offices, particularly for professors, provision of sandbags in various departments, Improved cleaning of the premises, completion of the micro-teaching laboratory at the Faculty of Education, conducting a physical headcount of staff, upholding the statutory ratio of 70:30 per cent in the curriculum for the College of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Allied Sciences (CCMAS), establishing libraries, especially an E-library, strengthening the curriculum, particularly the credit load in the Banking and Finance Department, ensuring adequate lighting in the studio and supplying locally authorised books to the library.

In response, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol C. Arinze-Umobi, assured the visiting team that her administration is committed to addressing these observations to improve the standard of education at the university. She thanked the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) for sending skilled officers for the verification exercise and expressed hope that the recommendations would be beneficial for the university's future.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor further assured the team that more books would be purchased for the libraries and that classrooms would be properly demarcated from staff offices. Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the need for a dental program and stated that if funds were available, they would allocate resources for the dental program. She also proposed the commencement of a Faculty of Dentistry. Furthermore, the Acting Vice-Chancellor promised to provide two buses to the College of Health Sciences upon the arrival of the vehicles from TETFUND.

A highlight of the occasion was the presentation of souvenirs to the various groups by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, which was complemented by a group photograph to mark their visit.

The resource verification team included Prof. Akwiwu Benjamin (University of Jos), Mrs. Yetunde Adekoya (NUC), and Akazue Nonye Ebele (NUC), who were there for the Dental Surgery program. Prof. Patrick Zayol (Joseph Tarka University, Jos), Nathan E. Eseme (KSM), and Queen Uchendu (NUC) assessed the Insurance, Investment, and Security Management Program. Prof. Gauis Jatau (Kaduna State University), Bar Nkiru Blessing Agagwuncha (NUC), and Emmanuel Anawo (NUC) were present for the Folklore Studies program.
Prof. Sunny Udeze (ESUT), Mrs Rosemary Egoalu (NUC), and Nweke Ugochukwu (NUC) represented the advertising and broadcasting programs. For Journalism, Media Studies, and Development Communication studies (Film Production), Prof. Fred Amadi (Rivers State University), Chinegwu Kenechukwu (NUC), and Ochala Solomon (NUC) were present. In a related development, Assoc. Prof. Aliyu G.A. (Hamisu Kawo), Dr C.C. Tukwa (NUC), and Chinenye Augustine (NUC) attended the programs in Social Studies, Civic Education, and Special Needs Education.

Prof. M.B. Yunusa (FUT Minna), Olalaye Jemil (NUC), and Mrs Martha EtoK (NUC) were there for the program on environmental education. Meanwhile, Prof. Oluwafemi K. Akande (Nile University), Onuoha Florence (NUC), and Rosemary Egoalu (NUC) represented the program on Interior Design and Landscape Architecture.

Also on the delegation list were Prof. Ahmadu E. Jonah (ABU Zaria) and Umukoro Anthonia (NUC), who undertook the verification of the Language Arts and Communication Education programs. Prof. Yahaya I.I. (FUT Minna), Yaya Nguman (NUC), and Doris Enemchukwu participated in the Education and Geography programmes verification.

The verification for the Local Government and Developmental Studies program, as well as Employment Relations and Human Resources Management, was handled by Prof. Joseph Onyemyi (LASU) and Oni Abimbola (NUC). Prof. Haruna Ibrahim Opaluwa, Jude Akubue (NUC), and Odigwe Esther (NUC) verified the programs in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension.

Additionally, Prof. Adullahi Rasheed, Abdullahi Kadir Rafindadi (UDU Sokoto), Yahaya Washima (NUC), and Bluejack Minasigha (NUC) were also in attendance. Various Deans, Heads of Departments (HODs), and Coordinators of the proposed academic programmes were present as well.

Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has received a high performance rating from critical stakeholders, including students, alumni, and staff, in a recent public opinion poll.

The poll was conducted on the university's official facebook page on September 19, 2025, and evaluated her performance in three categories: "VERY GOOD" "GOOD," and "POOR."

The voting, which lasted for 48 hours, had a total of 1,252 votes. 78% (977 votes) rated Prof. Arinze-Umobi's performance as "Very Good," while 15% (188 votes) rated it as "Good." and 6% (86 votes) rated it as "Poor" . From the data collection, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi's administration has been rated very good with 78% of 977 votes out of 1,252votes.
The overwhelming percentage of "very good" is a true reflection to her exceptional leadership and vision.

Since assuming office on May 19, 2025, as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Arinze-Umobi has demonstrated exceptional leadership through her vision, "Feeling the Pulse of Students, Staff, and Finding Solutions." Her missions through her vision have addressed long-standing challenges, including the provision of solar-powered boreholes, lighting, and internet access for students. Other notable achievements include the installation of solar-powered streetlights in both the Awka campus and Mbakwu, as well as the construction of entrance roads at the Okofia campus, among other projects.

These accomplishments have earned Prof. Arinze-Umobi an exceptional rating as well as promoting institutional excellence.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, has been honoured with the Distinguished Public Service Award by the Rotary Club of Awka. The award was presented during a courtesy visit to her office on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

The delegation, led by the Club President, Rotarian Chijioke Ogugua, commended Prof. Umobi for her exceptional leadership, dedication, and impact on both staff and students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, within her administration. He further applauded the Acting Vice-Chancellor's contributions to promoting peace and fostering development within the university, noting that the decision to honour her was based on her consistent efforts to improve the welfare of the university community. "The Acting Vice-Chancellor has touched lives in the university community in many ways. This is our way of recognising and encouraging her efforts," Rotarian Ogugua stated.

In their separate speeches, Rtn. Emmanuel Ojukwu, Past Assistant Governor (PAG), and Rtn. Adedeji Ann, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Awka, shared their experiences as Rotarians and lauded the Acting Vice-Chancellor for her selfless services to humanity.

In her response, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Arinze-Umobi, expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the honour and pledged her willingness to join the Rotary Club. “I am humbled by this award, and I promise to join Rotary, not just for the name, but to be part of a mission that uplifts humanity. My table is for service and the world needs people who will build others, not tear them down, and I believe that is what Rotary stands for,” Arinze-Umobi opined.

She also expressed gratitude for the peace and development that Rotary promotes globally and assured the club that the award is a motivational symbol to continue doing more for the good of society.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi has been honoured with the Sir Ahmadu Bello Distinguished Leadership Award for 2025.

This award recognises her exceptional leadership and contributions to national development.

The award ceremony took place on Wednesday, 17th September 2025, at the Vice-Chancellor's office and was attended by prominent individuals, including Comrade Godiya T. Adams Bogoro, President of the Northern Youth Forum Association of Nigeria (NYAN), Comrade Dauda Sambo, Organising Secretary of NYAN, Comrade Iloduba Oluchukwu Winifred, Liaison Officer for the Southeast, Barrister Philomena Okoye, the immediate past Registrar of UNIZIK and Mr Njelita Louis, Acting Director of Public Relations, UNIZIK, among others.

NYAN conferred the award to recognise Prof. Arinze-Umobi's exemplary contributions and significant impact on Nigeria's development, particularly in the realms of academic and leadership advancement.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Illuminates UNIZIK with New Solar-Powered Security Lights

The administration of Acting Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, has begun the installation of new solar-powered street lights across the university.

This initiative is a direct implementation of her administration's core vision: "Feeling the Pulse of Students, Staff, and Finding Solutions." The project addresses longstanding concerns over darkness and security, particularly around key pedestrian walkways and student hostel areas.

The new lighting system has already begun to transform the campus environment. It ensures the safety and security of students and staff during evening hours, facilitates extended academic and social activities, and significantly aids the patrol efforts of university security personnel.

Professor Arinze-Umobi explained the project's philosophical grounding, stating, "We operate on the principle that where there is no light, there is no life. This 'Light Up UNIZIK' project reflects our unwavering commitment to fostering a secure and conducive environment for learning, working, and community living."

The Department of Music, UNIZIK Unveils IGBO EKUNIE MBEM TROUPE

The Department of Music, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, recently launched the IGBO EKUNIE MBEM TROUPE during the inauguration of the Chisco Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management (CILSCM) Board, held on August 26, 2025.

Led by Pastor Dr. Ikedimma Okeke, the Head of the Department, the event captivated the audience with a blend of aesthetics, sights, and sounds reminiscent of international performances. The stage band performed special musical numbers, the renowned OYOMMA DANCE TROUPE showcased their beautiful dance styles, and the OGENE OJEMBA TROUPE delivered an outstanding performance.

The event began with the official unveiling of the IGBO EKUNIE MBEM TROUPE, a special group within the department. They warmly greeted the guests and audience with traditional OJA chants and MBEM performances.

Pastor Dr. Ikedimma Okeke expressed his delight at the productive engagement of students in these performances through the various groups established by the department. He emphasised that the music department is home to many talented students and that this platform will help propel them to musical heights. He is confident in their potential for success.

The Music Department has consistently led initiatives that support youth development and promote music investment, celebrating the country’s rich arts and culture.

Music Department, UNIZIK Concludes 2024/2025 Second Semester Performance Examination

~ Ensemble Performance Concert and Unveiling of Maiden Yearbook

The Department of Music, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, recently concluded its second semester performance examination for the 2024/2025 academic session. The event featured a concert showcasing various groups, including the Western Chorus, Western Orchestra, African Chorus, African Orchestra, African Dance, Stage Band, Pop Choreography, University Orchestra/Band, and the African Instrumental Ensemble. This concert occurred on August 22, 2025, at the Faculty Auditorium, Faculty of Arts, and attracted music lovers, parents, staff, and students. A special rendition was performed by one of the parents of the first-year students, Barrister and Barrister Anyabolu, the wife being a Magistrate of the Anambra State Judiciary.

In his opening remarks, Pastor Dr. Ikedimma Nwabufo Okeke, Head of the Music Department, expressed his gratitude to God for this year’s performance examination. He emphasised the students' active engagement in the production, describing it as the best. The music ensemble performance was in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the specified examinations, such as MUS 174, MUS 117, MUS 272, MUS 344 and MUS 444.

The Music Students' Association of Nigeria (MUSAN) also unveiled its maiden yearbook titled "Chronicles of UNIZIK Musicologists." Pastor Dr. Ikedimma Nwabufo Okeke described the yearbook as significant, aiming to capture the developments and achievements of both the staff and students of the department. He noted that the "Chronicles of UNIZIK Musicologists" is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and legacy, pinpointing the department's impressive potential and progress.

The event climaxed with award presentations and performances by the renowned "Oyomma Dance Troupe" and "Ogene Ojemba Troupe," both created by the department.

De Editorial's Award of the Year was presented to Mr. Chimezie Emmanuel Mmadueke (Ife - Akujiabia Na Mba). Awards of Excellence were given to several students, including Mr. Chibuike Victor Anolue (Vic-Cee), Mr. Chinaecherem Ezue, Mr. Delight Onyemuta, Mr. Michael Gard, Miss Joy Patrick, Miss Daniella Diamond, Miss Precious Emeka, Mrs. Esther Ejiofor, Mr. Christian Nwokocha, Miss Ebebuchukwu Ejiofor, and Miss Gloria Obidiume.

Notable attendees were Prof. Alvan Ikoku Nwamara, Prof. Nnamdi Onuora-Oguno, Prof. Eunice Ibekwe, Prof. Ebele Ojukwu, Prof. Chinyere Esimone, Dr. Amaka Ugoo-Okonkwo (Staff Adviser), and Mr. Ralph Umeoguchukwu (Ensemble Coordinator) and other members of the staff including Postgraduate Music Students.

The event was thrilling, featuring students displaying various performances in colourful costumes, led by their respective group leaders and the MUSAN President, Comrade Ebube Ejiofor.

Department of Music, UNIZIK Unveils OGENE OJEMBA

The Department of Music at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, recently unveiled the OGENE OJEMBA at the Homecoming event for the Giant Comrades Investiture of Patrons and Conferment of Honours, organised by the Student Union Government. This event took place at the ASUU Secretariat on August 21, 2025.

A defining moment occurred when the OGENE OJEMBA took the stage, igniting cheers from the crowd as their musical performance filled the air with excitement.

Pastor Dr. Ikedimma Okeke, who is deeply passionate about academics and youth development, mentioned that the special OGENE Troupe, composed of first-year music students from the Department, is intended for special events.

The OGENE Group was established by Pastor Dr. Ikedimma Okeke, the head of the Department of Music, who was present at the unveiling. He stated that the group was created to provide more students with performance opportunities and to form an ensemble capable of performing at public events both within and beyond the community. The number of opportunities for students to participate in music ensembles at Nnamdi Azikiwe University has significantly increased.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Registrar Pledges Commitment to E-Administration

The Registrar of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke, FNIM, FCILGPA, FCAI, ACIS, has assured the university community of her commitment to electronic administration (e-administration) as she assumes her new role.

Dr. Okeke revealed this during the official handover ceremony on Monday, August 18, 2025, while outlining some of her visions for the university.

In her remarks, Dr. Okeke thanked God for His benevolence upon her life, noting that "it's God all the way." She further expressed her gratitude to the University Governing Council, led by Pro-chancellor and Chairman, Barr. Monsur Olugbenga Kukoyi, for entrusting her with the appointment.

Dr. Okeke assured the university community that her office would be open to all, working together to foster progress and development of the university, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and collaboration among staff. Part of Dr. Okeke's vision for the university is centered on leveraging technology to enhance administrative efficiency and productivity, hence, she called on all staff to embrace the innovation for smooth services.

Speaking earlier, the Immediate Past Acting Registrar, Mr. Victor Modebelu, congratulated Dr. Okeke on her appointment and described her as a workaholic with the capacity to deliver on tasks. He called on staff to support her for the progress of the institution. Mr. Modebelu also glorified God for making the day come to reality, reiterating the significance of having a Substantive Registrar from within.

The brief ceremony was attended by notable university officials, including the immediate past Registrar, Barr. Philomina Okoye, Deputy Registrars, Acting Director, Information and Public Relations, Mr. Njelita Louis, among others.

Dr Chinenye Gloria Okeke Assumes Duty as Registrar, NAU

Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke has officially assumed duty as the Substantive Registrar of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Monday, August 18, 2025. In a brief handover ceremony held at the Registrar's office, Dr. Okeke took over from Mr. Victor Modebelu (Immediate Past Acting Registrar).

Dr. Okeke was born on May 31, 1978. She obtained her First School Living Certificate from Okpoko Community Primary V School Umbrella Nursery and Primary School, Lagos, in 1990, and her West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) certificate from Hope Bay College, Lagos, in 1995. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Government/Public Administration from Abia State University, Uturu, in 1999. Dr. Okeke furthered her studies, obtaining an MPA from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in 2006 and a Ph.D. in Public Administration (Public Policy Analysis) from the same institution in 2018.

Dr. Okeke began her career at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in 2002 as an Administrative Assistant. She rose through the ranks, serving in various capacities, including Administrative Officer, Assistant Registrar, Senior Assistant Registrar, Principal Assistant Registrar, and Faculty Administrative Officer. In July 2019, she was promoted to Deputy Registrar, working in various units until her current appointment as Registrar on August 15, 2025.

Dr. Okeke hails from Igbo Ukwu in Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State. She is married and the marriage is blessed with four children.

Dr. Okeke is a member of several professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Local Government and Public Administration of Nigeria (Fellow), Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria (Fellow), and Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) (Fellow).

Dr. Okeke has attended several trainings, workshops, and conferences, and has received several awards, including the Vice-Chancellor's commendation and the UN-POLAC Mother Theresa Heart of Gold Award in 2022.
As a scholar, Dr. Okeke has published several articles in different journals to her credit including Learned Journals.

Her contributions to the university community are enormous, and we wish Dr. Okeke success in her new role as Registrar of the great citadel of learning, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

UNIZIK GOVERNING COUNCIL APPOINTS NEW REGISTRAR

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has appointed Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke as the new Registrar.

The announcement was made on Friday during the 18th Emergency Meeting of the University’s Governing Council by Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council. Dr. Okeke’s appointment is effective from Monday, August 18, 2025, and is for a term of five years.

Before her appointment, Dr. Okeke served as a Deputy Registrar I (Senate), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Born on May 31, 1978, Dr. Okeke holds a B.Sc. in Government/Public Administration from Abia State University, Uturu, Abia State, which she earned in 1999. She obtained her M.Sc. in Public Administration from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in 2006 and completed her Ph.D. in Public Administration (Public Policy Analysis) at the same institution in 2018.

Dr. Okeke began her career at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in 2002 as an Administrative Assistant. She became an Administrative Officer in the Personnel Unit in 2005, serving in that role until 2008. In October 2008, she was promoted to Assistant Registrar in the Admissions Unit and served as a Senior Assistant Registrar from 2011 to 2014.

From 2014 to 2016, she held the position of Principal Assistant Registrar. In November 2016, Dr. Okeke became a Faculty Administrative Officer at the Faculty of Engineering, where she worked until April 2019. In July 2019, she was promoted to Deputy Registrar, working in various units including the Continuing Education Programme, Admissions Unit, and University Senate until her current appointment as Registrar.

Dr. Okeke is from Igboukwu in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. She is married and has four children.

NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY GETS NEW SUBSTANTIVE REGISTRAR

The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has appointed Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke as the Substantive Registrar of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. This decision was made during the Council's 18th Emergency meeting, chaired by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Governing Council, Barr. Olugbenga Kukoyi, at the Council Chambers. Following a rigorous and transparent screening exercise on August 15, 2025, the Governing Council received and considered the report of the joint Council/Senate Selection Board and appointed Dr. Chinenye Okeke.

In her letter of appointment, signed by the Chairman of Council, Barr. Kukoyi, Dr. Okeke's appointment is effective from Monday, August 18, 2025.

Prior to her appointment, Dr. Okeke served as the Deputy Registrar, Senate Unit of the University.

PROFESSOR ORAKWE DELIVERS 112TH INAUGURAL LECTURE ON CLIMATE, TECHNOLOGY, AND FOOD SECURITY.

Engr. Prof. Louis Chukwuemeka Orakwe of the Department of Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering delivered Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s 112th Inaugural Lecture on Thursday, 7th August, 2025. The lecture, titled "Climate and Technological Dynamics in Soil-Water-Plant Relationships for Food Security and Environmental Sustainability," addressed critical global challenges of climate change and food scarcity.

The 112th Inaugural lecturer, is a Professor of Soil Conservation, Water Resources, and Environmental Engineering. Prof. Orakwe emphasised the interconnected roles of soil, water, and plants in sustaining ecosystems. He explained that soil acts as the foundation for plant growth, while plants enhance soil health and water quality through transpiration and photosynthesis. Disruptions to this balance, he noted, threaten food security and environmental resilience.

The lecture pinpointed how digital agriculture leveraging data analytics, AI, and machine learning can optimise these relationships by predicting weather patterns, diagnosing soil health, and improving agricultural efficiency. Prof. Orakwe also showcased sustainable technologies like regenerative agriculture, hydroponics, and vertical farming for conserving biodiversity, reducing soil degradation, and minimising water waste.

Professor Orakwe highlighted some of his research breakthroughs from his work including; Advanced irrigation systems (e.g., mulching and drip irrigation) that conserve water and reduce waste, plant breeding techniques enhancing nutritional quality and stress resilience, climate impact assessments using permaculture and agroforestry to promote soil carbon sequestration, studies on soil structure, organic content, and texture for improved crop management and river sediment transport modeling, water quality forecasting, and irrigation development.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, in her opening speech earlier, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to scholarly excellence, noting that its 500 professors drive impactful research. She commended Prof. Orakwe for his academic leadership and scholarly contributions to engineering and the society, represented by Prof. Greg. Obiamalu, Director of Continuing Education(CEP).

Having done justice to the lecture title, Prof. Orakwe was decorated with a Medal as the 112th Inaugural Lecturer of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

AVC Celebrates UNIZIK Sport Teams' Silver and Gold Medals

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, celebrated with the university's sports teams that returned with outstanding performances in recent national competitions. The ceremony took place on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Vice-Chancellor's Conference Room.

The competitions, which included the Nigerian University Staff Sports Association (NUSSA) Games held at Bayero University Kano (BUK) and a Chess competition in Lagos State, saw UNIZIK's teams win 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals in the NUSSA Games, and 1 Gold and 2 Silver medals in the Chess Invitational.

Welcoming the victorious teams, Prof. Arinze-Umobi commended their exceptional performance and exemplary conduct as ambassadors of UNIZIK, commending Pastor Dr. Ikedimma Okeke, Chairman of UNIZIK Chess Association for mentoring these students in Chess games. She emphasised the significance of the medal achievements, stating, "It is very significant that when there is an amalgamation of all Nigerian Universities in a sporting competition, UNIZIK makes the top three positions." This achievement aligns with the legacy of the university's namesake, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. She challenged future participants to aim for gold and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting sports development within the institution.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor appreciated the teams with welfare packages and charged them to continue projecting Nnamdi Azikiwe University on the global map through sports, just as Azikiwe was number one in Africa.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, received Mr. Okpogba Alvin Chinedu, an alumnus of the university, in her office on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Mr. Chinedu was celebrated for his exceptional achievements during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, which earned him the prestigious Presidential NYSC Honours Award.

Mr. Chinedu was recognised as the Overall Best Corps Member for the 2021 Service Year, 2nd Overall Best Corps Member for the 2020-2023 Service Year, and Best Corps Member, Batch A Stream 1, Cross River State (2021). During the reception, Professor Arinze-Umobi warmly congratulated Mr. Chinedu on his outstanding accomplishments, commending his dedication and positive impact on community development services.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor emphasised the vital role corps members play in nation-building, drawing from her experience as an Overall Platoon Leader during her service year. "On behalf of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Management, I want to use this opportunity to thank you for your dedication and commitment," Professor Arinze-Umobi stated.

Mr. Okpogba Alvin Chinedu, a graduate of Music from the Faculty of Arts, served at the 13 Brigade Headquarters, Nigerian Army Barracks, Calabar. His exceptional year was marked by significant community development initiatives, including composing music albums, constructing infrastructure, and volunteering as a music teacher.

~Producing 10 band sashes for the Band Community Development Service (CDS) group at the NYSC Secretariat, Calabar.

~Volunteering as Choir Master and Band Musicologist for the Brigade Band office at 13 Brigade Headquarters and the Air Force Catholic Chaplaincy.

In a significant advancement for student accommodation, aligning with her administration's vision, "Feeling the Pulse of Students, Staff and Finding Solutions," the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, on Thursday, July 31, 2025, officially received the entrance key to the newly completed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Female Hostel.

In a brief handover ceremony held at the Vice-Chancellor's Office, Arc. Larry Koinyan, Managing Director of Atlantic Bridge, thanked the University Management for the opportunity to contribute to the institution's development. He stated that despite the challenges encountered during the project execution, they were able to deliver according to specification through perseverance and collaboration with University officials

In her address, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi expressed profound gratitude to the Federal Government for crucial support. She emphasised the hostel's strategic importance, stating it represents vital infrastructure for fostering a conducive learning environment. Prof. Arinze-Umobi further announced that construction of a complementary male hostel is already underway. She lauded Arc. Larry Koinyan and Atlantic Bridge for delivering a high-quality facility, describing the building as a state-of-the-art construction.

Professor Makodi Biereenu-Nnabugwu, Dean of Student Affairs, on behalf of the students, expressed appreciation to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Arc. Larry Koinyan and all dignitaries present for their unwavering support and commitment to enhancing student welfare.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Commissions Transformative Student Welfare Projects at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka

In a significant effort to enhance student welfare and address critical needs, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, has launched a series of impactful, student-centred projects.

Prof. Arinze-Umobi led a distinguished delegation to officially inaugurate the facilities, which utilise solar technology to improve campus life. The projects include: solar-powered free internet WiFi at the Oby Ezekwesili Hostel, a solar-powered borehole providing water at the Prof. Basil Oli Hostel, solar-powered charging points for student devices at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Hostel and solar-powered lighting installed at the Chief Mrs. Stella Okoli Female Hostel.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Barrister. Olugbenga Kukoyi (represented by Dame Amina Elizabeth Yakowa), Council member, Chief Barrister Olisa Metuh (Akajiugo), former national publicity secretary, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr. Chukwuma Ugbala Ofoke, another member of the Governing Council.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi Attracts Ultra-Modern Female Hostel

In her unwavering commitment to improving the well-being and living conditions of students, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, has successfully attracted an ultra-modern female hostel from the Paul Erinne Foundation.
During the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Foundation in her conference room, Prof. Arinze-Umobi commended the donor and founder of the Foundation, Brother Paul Erinne, for his benevolence to humanity and appreciated him for extending his kind gestures to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

She further expressed the management's gratitude and prayed that God would continue to strengthen Paul Erinne for his humanitarian endeavors.

Speaking, Paul Erinne appreciated the Acting Vice-Chancellor for her kindness and recounted their childhood days when they lived in the same area, as their parents worked together in the same school. Erinne stated that he wanted to cement their long-established relationship, hence his donation of the ultra-modern female hostel.

At 70 years old, Erinne reflected on his humanitarian service over the years and expressed his determination to contribute to the welfare of Nigerian students in his golden years.

The ultra-modern female hostel will feature 100 fully furnished rooms for 200 students, 24/7 power supply, high-speed WiFi, modern kitchen and laundry facilities, study and relaxation lounges, top-notch security and CCTV surveillance, and an accessible location.

During the foundation stone-laying ceremony, Paul Erinne Foundation assured that the project would be completed within one year and would be virtually free for occupants, with only minimal charges for maintenance fees, if necessary.

The event was witnessed by the management team of the university.
