UNIZIK: Management rejects Permanent Secretary's cancellation of Appointments.

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, has rejected the permanent secretary's cancellation of the appointments of Professor Benard Odoh as Vice Chancellor and R.I. Nwokike as Registrar. The Federal Ministry of Education had claimed that the appointments didn't follow established protocols, and directed the council to pause all appointments until the new Minister of Education takes office.

The university's Registrar, Barr (Mrs) Nwokike, responded by clarifying that all necessary protocols were observed during the appointment process. She emphasized that informal discussions took place between the outgoing Minister of State and the Council, instead of a formal meeting. Nwokike also highlighted that invitations were sent to all relevant parties, ensuring broad representation from stakeholders, including the Federal Character Commission.

Nwokike further confirmed that due process was rigorously maintained throughout the selection and appointment of both the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar. She noted that 15 out of 18 applicants attended the interview, and score sheets were duly documented. The Council acted within its lawful authority, adhering to the University's regulations as outlined in the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act, Cap 139 (as amended), LFN 2004.


It's worth noting that Nnamdi Azikiwe University is a federal university that follows strict federal government guidelines on admission and appointment processes. The university's management is committed to upholding the principles of due process and legal compliance.

Professor Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh Appointed as New Vice Chancellor of UNIZIK

In a landmark announcement, Professor Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh, a distinguished Professor of Geophysics, has been appointed as the seventh substantive Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka effective October 29, 2024.

The appointment, revealed on Tuesday in Awka by the university’s Pro-Chancellor, Ambassador Greg Ozuomba Mbadiwe, follows an intensive selection process involving 18 candidates.

Professor Odoh emerged as the top candidate due to his extensive experience in academic teaching, research, and administration. His appointment is governed by Section 4 of the First Schedule of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, as amended in 2007.

The letter of appointment, handed over by Ambassador Mbadiwe, confirms a five-year term for Professor Odoh, in alignment with Federal Government standards for all federal universities.

During the ceremony, Professor Odoh expressed his gratitude to the Governing Council and the Selection Committee for their confidence in him, pledging his dedication to advancing the university.

“I am honored to be the first alumnus of UNIZIK to serve in this role. Having completed all my degrees here, I deeply understand the challenges we face. I promise to lead with performance as the measure of success, and I am committed to making tangible improvements,” he said.

Professor Odoh, born on August 5, 1975, in Ezza North LGA, Ebonyi State, has a rich history at UNIZIK, where he served on the Senate from 2010 to 2014 and held positions such as Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor on Academic Matters. Appointed a professor at Federal University Gusau in 2015, he returned to UNIZIK in 2019 after resigning as Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government. He is also known for his significant contributions to academic research, with over 120 publications in international journals and e-books.

Ambassador Mbadiwe emphasized the council’s confidence in Professor Odoh’s leadership, asserting that he has the qualities necessary to steer UNIZIK toward greater achievements. With Professor Odoh at the helm, UNIZIK’s community anticipates a promising era of growth and excellence.

HON. MINISTER OF STATE, EDUCATION APPEALS FOR PEACE AND PROGRESS IN UNIZIK

The Honorable Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Education, Yusuf Tanko Summunu has appealed to the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka to ensure peace and progress in the University.


The Honorable Minister made the appeal during a scheduled meeting with some members of the Governing Council of Unizik led by the Pro chancellor and Chairman, Ambassador Greg O. Mbadiwe, MFR.


The Honorable Minister also stressed the need for the Council to close ranks with both ASUU and MDCAN in the interest of the university. According to the Minister, the advice became necessary to ensure stability in the university, emphasizing that with peace, the University will develop rapidly.


In his remarks at the meeting, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman Amb. Mbadiwe assured the Honorable Minister that the Council will do everything within its power to maintain peace in the University. He assured that all grievances will be amicably resolved in the interest of the great University named after the great ‘ZIK of Africa’ Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe.


The meeting which was at the instance of the Honorable Minister ended cordially after several other discussions that centred on the welfare of staff of the university and other developmental challenges currently facing Higher Education in Nigeria.

Hardship: Unizik Students Get Relief As Acting VC Slashes Fees

The Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Carol Arinze Umobi, has reduced the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) fees and charges in the university.

This decision was made based on the recommendations of the CIT Committee, according to Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor on Information and Public Relations.

The reduction amounts to a total of N9,500.

Students will now be charged only once for all ICT services, while the App fee of N2,000 and Duplicate Orientation fee of N3,500 have been abolished.

Additionally, the General Studies publications fee has been reviewed downwards from N12,000 to N8,000, and there will be a 50% reduction on all transcript fees.

The CIT Committee emphasized the need to domicile the transcript processing platform in the university to be managed by the university staff.

Prof. Umobi expressed her conviction that these reductions will be in the interest of the university and the students and their parents, stating that no measure is too small to alleviate the hardship currently being faced by the students.

She advised the students to make use of all available opportunities to excel, pledging the university's commitment to working hard in the interest of the students.

The Governing Council and Management of CICA-International University & Seminary, Orlando, Florida, USA, held a 3-day symposium and awards night with special guest lecture on the art of establishing Inaugural Lecture Series with the 97th Inaugural lecturer of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka-Nigeria, Professor Williams Emeka Obiozor from Friday, October 18th -Sunday, October 20th,2024, at the Rosen Centre Hall in the Orlando, Florida, USA.


In his welcome remarks, the Chancellor of CICA-International University and Seminary, Rt. Hon. Dr. Phillip Phinn welcomed the Guest lecturer and participants to the annual University Symposium and reiterated the university has a long-standing principle of working with people from diverse cultures while pursuing the goal of research, teaching and faith-based programs to promote peaceful and progressive lives of human beings.

The Chancellor hailed the innovative packaging of faculty training on instituting Inaugural lectures which he said will strengthen faculty commitment and excellence in the teaching and research fields.


Speaking at the symposium, the Guest speaker Prof Obiozor deliberated extensively on the procedures of instituting an Inaugural lecture series in the university taking cues from his own University in Awka-Nigeria, Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, the Coventry University in the United Kingdom, and European universities.


The lecturer went on to inform that the Inaugural lecture if established will introduce new research outcomes and reports of scholars on a professorial cadre. He explained that the essence of full professors engaging in the Inaugural lecture programs in their institutions gives exposure, recognition and appreciating his or her years of active research, teaching excellence and community services while serving the institution.


According to Prof Obiozor, "Inaugural lectures provide our professors with the opportunity to share their achievements in research, innovation, engagements in grants, teaching activities before an audience which includes members of the University community and the public. It is not a mandatory program because some professors, due to some personal circumstances may not be able to present the lecture before retirement while unfortunate ones may be deceased before their time for such presentations".


Prof. Obiozor accentuated an inaugural lecture to celebrate life in the field of academia, a thing of pride, joy and excellent accomplishments which every erudite professor looks forward to becoming a participant.


The event usually features people from all works of life, feasting and exchanging ideas, networking, social interactions amongst colleagues.


Highlights of the paper presentation included a special training workshop session with the professors and faculty at CICA-University; awards of Excellence plaques and Certificates presentation to Doctoral degree graduands and deserving faculty members by the Chancellor of the University.


The Symposium, training and award ceremony was presided by the President of the CICA-International University, H.E. Rev. Dr. Sharon J. Baquedo-Phinn. Prof Obiozor was also appointed a visiting professor position, as well as offered a fellowship program subject to the approval of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.


Speaking to reporters after the symposium, the first Inaugural lecturer of CCA-International University and Seminary, Prof. Ada JUNI Menakaya explained that CICA International University and Seminary is expanding its academic and research scope with the annual symposium whereby Inaugural lectures will be held by deserving professors.

"This is the first of its kind in America and we are happy to have Prof Obiozor, the Dirextor of CENDASNER, in our midst to help us midwife the project take off.

"We are repositioning CICA-International University and Seminary for global excellence and development," she concluded.


The symposium and awards event ended with a mandate call by the University Chancellor and a prayer of charge to all graduates and award recipients to position ourselves to all we are asked to do as builders of humanity.

Under the visionary leadership of Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), continues to make strides in sports development.

Recently, Prof. Arinze-Umobi's forward-thinking approach enabled top UNIZIK sports officials to attend the 11th All Africa University Games ('UNILAG-LASU 2024'), held from September 20th - 29th, 2024, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU).

The UNIZIK delegation, comprising Dr. Dereck Orji and Engr. Dr. Ikenna Nwokedi, benefited from the experience, gaining valuable insights into sports administration and management.

"Prof. Arinze-Umobi's support has been instrumental in our participation, Her commitment to sports development aligns with UNIZIK's vision for excellence," Dr. Nwokedi stated.

The 11th FASU Games brought together over 22 African universities, with 12 Nigerian institutions participating. UNIZIK's presence was a total commitment to Prof. Arinze-Umobi's dedication to promoting sports as an integral part of the varsity life.

The Department of Health Promotion and Public Health Education at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, recently organized a four-day conference in collaboration with the Health Promotion Research Association of Nigeria (HEPRAN). The event, titled "Reorienting Health Service for Effective Health Promotion in Nigeria," took place from October 9th to October 12th, 2024, at the University Auditorium. The conference also included a workshop on "Grantmanship and Health Research."

Representing the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze Umobi, Emeritus Prof. Jerome Okonkwo Okafor conveyed good wishes to the National President of HEPRAN, Prof. Cajetan I. Ilo, and its National Secretary, Tochi E. Iwuagwu, and the staff of the Department of Health and Public Health for their efforts in organizing the conference.

The theme of the 21st Annual Conference, "Reorienting Health Service for Effective Health Promotion in Contemporary Nigeria," and the workshop "Grantmanship and Health Promotion Research," are both relevant to the current socio-economic landscape of Nigeria. The conference aimed to address the various aspects of health services in contemporary Nigeria, including emergency, preventive, rehabilitation, palliative, hospital, and home care, with the goal of providing high-quality and affordable patient-centered services to the population.

“I am aware that health services refer to a combination of resources, facilities, and individuals providing medical care in a specific area, such as contemporary Nigeria. This includes various medical professionals, organizations, and support staff, offering a wide range of services including emergency care, preventive measures, rehabilitation, palliative care, hospital services, and home care. The goal is to ensure that high-quality and affordable patient-centered services are accessible to the population. This leads to some important questions: What is the current focus of health services in Nigeria? Why is there a need for a change in focus and in what direction should this change occurs? The theme of this workshop appears to be related to that of the conference, which centers on how to encourage the government and other organizations to allocate funds for health promotion research,” he said.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Nnaemezie Nkiru Onyinyechukwu, Head of Department for Health Promotion and Public Health Education at UNIZIK, highlighted the importance of the day and the unique opportunity it presents in light of the many challenges facing our healthcare system. These challenges include inadequate infrastructures, workforce shortages, and competing priorities.

However, Dr. Onyinyechukwu also pointed out that there are opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and transformation. The theme of the conference reflects a commitment to prioritizing prevention, community engagement, and people-centered care.

"We will be engaging in state-of-the-art presentations and practices, and will be exploring strategies to strengthen health systems for effective health promotion. This will include fostering community participation and ownership, addressing social determinants of health, leveraging technologies for health promotion, and enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration. As we gather today, let us reaffirm our commitment to prioritizing health promotion, prevention, and empowering communities to take charge of their health," she stated.

During his keynote address, Prof. Emeritus Jerome O. Okafor, FNSHA, FNAHE, emphasized the significance of the first Global conference on health promotion, which took place in Ottawa, Canada in 1986. This conference led to the establishment of the Ottawa Charter for health promotion and built upon the advancements made through the declaration of primary health care at Ama-Ata.

Professor Okafor defined health promotion in line with the Ottawa Charter as the process of empowering individuals to enhance their control over and improve their health. The Charter underscores health as a positive concept that emphasizes social and personal resources, alongside physical capacities. It also outlines the fundamental prerequisites for good health, including peace, shelter, education, food, income, a stable ecosystem, sustainable resources, social justice, and equity.

Furthermore, the Emeritus Professor elaborated on the strategies outlined in the Ottawa Charter for health promotion, which encompass building healthy policies, fostering supportive environments, strengthening community action, assisting individuals in developing personal skills, and reorienting health services.

The conference went beyond captivating displays and dancing sessions. It included a courtesy visit and a presentation of the book to the Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Carol Arinze Umobi. Notable attendees included: Prof. Jerome O. Enugwu Ukwu-Houston Community marks her 2024 Olili Onwasato (New Yam Festival) in USA

USA - Saturday September 14, 2024, was a great historic day to Ndi Igbo in the city of Houston, Texas, United States of America; when Nigerians and Americans converged at the Grand Affairs Ballroom, to celebrate the New Yam festival of Ndi Enugwu ukwu under the auspices of the Enugwu Ukwu Community Development Union Houston chapter, USA.

The event which kicked off with the arrival of special guests, friends, inlaws and ndi Enugwu Ukwu which included, Chief Emma Nwankwo (Ozonkpu Akajiugo Enugwu Ukwu na Umunri kingdom) the representative of Eze Enugwu ukwu na Igwe Umunri, Igwe Sir Ralph Ekpeh, Chief Joel Osita Ekpe (Alupuo Aku Enugwu-Ukwu n Umunri),
Chief Henry Okolie Aboh. (Ononando chukwu Enugwu-Ukwu na Umunri), Chief Obinna Mbachu (Ide Umudioka and President emeritus People's Club International 1st Sugarland Texas plus a host of other members of Peoples Club; Professor Chris Ulasi of Texas State University,

In his welcome remarks, the President of ECDU Houston chapter, Dr Uche Odinigwe said that the new yam festivity is an annual reminder to ndi Enugwu ukwu and Igbos in diaspora on the need of carrying our culture and tradition along for the benefit of everyone especially families and children coming together. He also emphasized that new yam feast also creates opportunities to raise funds for community projects in Enugwu ukwu town.

In his opening speech, the chairman of the occasion, Attorney Okey Dike (Ugoebenaja N'Urualla) admonished ndi Enugwu ukwu for living up to the expectations as the custodians of Nri/Igbo culture with the various cultural and traditional activities both at home and abroad. He urged other Igbo communities to cue into this cultural project for the sake of our children.

The chairman of ECDU Board and former President of ECDU USA, Ozonkpu Chief Sir Basil Mbuba thanked the guests for coming to the new Yam Feast. He appealed for everyone present to give their financial support at the event because monies raised are used to assist the development of Enugwu ukwu town, provide scholarships, palliatives to the needy, among other charities.

The Guest Speaker, Prof. Emeka Obiozor spoke extensively on the essence of Yam as a staple crop and essential food that is celebrated in Igbo land and other tribes in Nigeria, West Africa and other parts of the world.

"New Yam festival is very significant in Enugwu ukwu and Igbo land because it symbolizes the end of farming season and beginning of harvest of crops. Yam is the first crop to be harvested in the farm and the harvest symbolizes the abundance of produce, while rituals are performed to express gratitude to the Chi (gods) in the community for making harvest possible and bountiful, " he added.

Among the highlights of the new yam festival included performing iri ji and sharing yam tubers to visitors and guests; presentation of awards of Excellence to deserving personalities and youth awards to enterprising Enugwu ukwu youths in America, as well as dances by the prestigious Enugwu Ukwu Houston Women's Dance and other displays.

The event was moderated by Chief Udoji Achebe, Okosisi na Ogidi, Ezeoba Chris Nwuzoh and Attorney Ifeoma MBA (PRO).

In a laudable effort to promote public health and support the University community, the Center for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) collaborated with the Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation to organize an extensive free medical outreach on Friday, September 6th, 2024.


The event, held at the CENDASNER premises on the UNIZIK campus, offered a wide range of free medical services to attendees, including blood pressure checks, HIV testing, eye massages, blood and sugar level tests, malaria screenings, and medical consultations. Additionally, supplements were provided to all those who participated in the outreach.


Representing the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, the Director of CENDASNER, Prof. Williams Emeka Obiozor, expressed his gratitude to the founder of the Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation, Enyi Ezenwayi May Egbunike Agbakoba, for her generosity and support towards the center and the university community.


"This free medical outreach is a crucial initiative that addresses the healthcare needs of our students, especially those with disabilities, by bridging the gap and reducing the financial burden on them," said Prof. Obiozor. "We are honored to collaborate with the Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation to make this possible."


Henry Edward, the Head of the Cultural Unit at the Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation, highlighted the importance of this partnership in reaching out to the people, particularly those in the grassroots who require medical assistance but may not have the means to access it.

The event was a resounding success, with a large turnout of participants, including students with disabilities. The highlight of the day was a transparent lucky-deep picking by a small girl, during which a visually impaired student from the Department of Mass Communication, Master Chukwuke Miracle Emela, emerged as the winner of a brand-new laptop.

Beneficiaries of the outreach, such as Mr. Osunkwo Uche, a university staff, expressed their gratitude for the comprehensive medical services provided and the organizers' commitment to improving public health within the UNIZIK community.

"We are here because we heard that CENDASNER, UNIZIK in partnership with Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation is giving back to the society through this medical outreach.

“I came to see for myself, and indeed, everything promised happened right here. Yes, I was physically present and witnessed the transparent lucky-deep picking by a small girl, by which Master Miracle emerged as a the winner among four contestants; I was also given an extensive free medical test for HIV, Malaria, BP, Sugar level test and eye massage. Prof. Willie Obiozor, thank you and your partners, team and I pray that God rewards you appropriately,” he said.

UNIZIK: Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation in Conjunction with CENDASNER Holds Free Medical Outreach for University Community

The Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation in Conjunction with the Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has organized a free medical outreach for the physically challenged students as well as staff of the institution.

The free medical outreach bankrolled by the Founder of the Charity Foundation, Enyi Ezenwanyi May Egbunike Agbakoba was held on Friday, 6th September 2024 at the CENDASNER Premises, UNIZIK.

The medical outreach offered medical services such as Free Malaria Test, Free Typhoid Test, Sugar Test, High Blood Pressure, HIV Test, Hepatitis B Test, Eye Massager and Body Massager.

Addressing the media during the free medical outreach, the Manager of Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation, Arthur Udo stated that the medical outreach by the benefactor was as a result of her love and concern for the people and humanity, a noble act which Enyi Ezenwanyi Agbakoba has consistently done for over 30 years.

Udo noted that the medical outreach which has been done in all the five states of the South East Geopolitical zone and beyond has seen over 5000 recipients benefiting from the act of love and benevolence geared towards wiping the tears of the needy and downtrodden in the society. The manager of the charity foundation offered that the free medical outreach holding at UNIZIK is based on the partnership with CENDASNER for people with disabilities and staff of the institution.

"We are delighted to see that through this free medical outreach we have been able to put smiles on the faces of the physically challenged and staff members of UNIZIK all made possible by the founder of the Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation, Enyi Ezenwanyi May Egbunike Agbakoba.

"We have been able to do this through our partnership with CENDASNER at UNIZIK, this is our second time of touching lives here as last month we donated wheel chairs and crutches for the physically challenged. Our boss have done this because of the love she has for humanity to wipe the tears of the less privileged and the downtrodden. It may interest you to know that over 5000 persons have benefitted from this medical outreach across the nation and we intend to take that to other places such as the North so that they can also feel the impact of her milk of kindness and magnanimity," Udo said.

In his remarks, the Director of CENDASNER, Professor Williams Emeka Obiozor eulogized the founder of the Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation for her continuous act of kindness and support to not just the less privileged and the physically challenged but the University at large. Prof. Obiozor informed that it is the second time the charity foundation is coming to the University for the philanthropic gesture as the first was in the form of donation of wheel chairs and crutches to the physically challenged.

The Professor of Adult Education and Special Needs appreciated Enyi Ezenwanyi May Egbunike Agbakoba for her benevolence and kind disposition while expressing hope that the medical outreach will become an annual affair in the institution. The scholar disclosed that the free medical outreach will offer a lucky dip where one of the students will win a brand new laptop.

On his part, one of the recipients, Mr. Emmanuel Chudi described the medical outreach as a welcome development considering the state of the nation as a lot of people are passing through difficulties and financial challenges. The medical outreach featured various medical tests for the physically challenged and staff of the institution, medical counselling and rehabilitation while a visually impaired student from Department of Mass Communication, Master Chukwuka Miracle Emela smiled home with the brand new laptop on offer from the lucky dip moment.

UNIZIK CENDASNER SUPPORTS GOD'S CARE SPECIAL SCHOOL WITH CASH DONATION

The Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, known for disability advocacy, training, rights and support activities has reached out to God's Care School for Special Needs, Amaenyi, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The event was held at the premises of CENDASNER'S building on Thursday, 22nd August, 2024, where the Director, Prof. Williams Emeka Obiozor presented a financial donation to the school through CENDASNER'S Trust Fund.

While commiserating with the special school on the loss of one of their pupils, Professor Obiozor called for the support of public spirited individuals including NGO's and government at all levels, to cater for the persons/children with special needs in our communities during these difficult times. He commended some philanthropic organisations/corporate firms like Afrexim bank of Cairo-Egypt for the support given so far to CENDASNER and vulnerable persons in the society.

Furthermore, the erudite Professor appealed to parents of children with special needs not to neglect or abandon their wards in the special school rather they should work with the school to bring out the best in them, for the pupils development and growth.

Receiving a check of N20,000 on behalf of the school from CENDASNER, the proprietress of God's Care Special School, Mrs. Ndife Justina Ebele said, "we extend our heartfelt appreciation for your generous financial donation which will significantly contribute to the feeding of the pupils. Your advocacy and support will enrich the experience of our school and create a more inclusive environment. Thank you for your kindness and generosity," she said.

She further solicited for more assistance from Nigerians and philanthropic groups; she added, "we can't do it alone but need help from Nigerians as we have classrooms but not all are furnished. We need chairs, television sets, and computers in all classes as we need to use these learning aids to help them learn fast".

"We also spend so much money feeding these disabled pupils and buying the medications they need because they take a lot of medication which are very expensive. We take them on routine medical check ups at the Hospital. We also need collaborators to help us subsidize our other expenses and feeding," she stated.

Finally, the special education teacher thanked Professor Obiozor and CENDASNER for remembering the disabled pupils and pray that God will bless and protect them, including the acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof Carol Arinze Umeobi, students and management team.

The past Governor Enugwu ukwu Forum Lagos, Ozonkpu Chief Phillip Nworji (Elochukwukpalu-Nwachinemelu Enugwu ukwu na Umunri) was recently honoured by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER) Awka, in appreciation of his support to the activities of the Centre.

In a brief remarks during an appreciation visit to his country home at Enugwu- Ukwu, the CENDASNER Director, Prof Williams Emeka Obiozor commended Chief Nworji for being among the philanthropists who responded to the call for support to the Centre during its inaugural event in 2020.

"Sir, you wholeheartedly accepted to produce award plaques plus logistics to CENDASNER when we organized our inauguration in 2020. Since then you have been supportive to us whenever you are in the Southeast. It is our prayer that God will continue to bless you and give you success in your business. Thank you", he prayed.

In his acceptance of the Award of Excellence and Appreciation, Chief Phillip Nworji who was also the past President General ECDU Government Appointed Caretaker Committee, Chairman Ilu Ogbo Commission and acting Chairman Enugwu Ukwu Traditional Council, thanked CENDASNER for remembering him, called on members of the public to lend their support to students with disabilities in their quest for education and training for a better life.

2024 UNIZIK Visually Impaired Students Week Commences Today


The 2024 UNIZIK Visually Impaired Students week commenced today with advocacy visits to the Dean of Students Affairs, the Director of the Centre for General Studies and the Chief Security Officer.

Declaring the week open, the President of the association of Visually Impaired Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Enoch Chioma Lillian, described the advocacy engagement as a crucial instrument of finding solutions to some of the common challenges faced by students with visual impairment on campus.

Addressing the Dean of Students Affairs, the President of the association, Enoch Chioma Lillian appealed for more scholarship opportunities to be made available to visually impaired students. She advocated for special considerations during scholarship award, stating that any financial support given to students with visual impairment will go along way in improving access to quality education.

Also speaking, Frank Obiefune appealed for extra examination time for visually impaired students as they can not write at the same level with their sighted counterparts.

Responding, the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Chinonso Achebe commended the students for their resilience and restated the commitment of the school authority to making the university environment accessible to all who desire quality university education. He assured the delegation that his office will work with scholarship providers to provide support to the students while urging them to keep faith alive. He congratulated them on the visually impaired students week celebration and commended the various volunteers for a job well done.


Commending the warm reception given to the delegation, the Public Relations Officer of the association, Favour Ezinne Onele, thanked the office of the dean of students affairs for the warm reception and invited him to the gran finale of the week-long celebration.

High points of the visit was the presentation of the advocacy statement to the dean and a group photograph.

Similarly, at the Centre for General Studies, the delegation was received by the Director of the centre, Dr. Charles Nweke. Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the President of the association, Enoch Chioma Lillian, disclosed that the essence of the visit was to intimate the centre on the various challenges confronting students with visual impairment.

Frank Obiefune commended the director for the warm reception and listed some of the challenges facing visually impaired students to include: absence of textbooks in audio formats and absence of specialised readers to read questions to the students during examinations. He also appealed for extra time during examination.

Responding, Dr. Nweke promised to make the audio books available to the students before the commencement of the general studies examination for second semester. He also assured the delegation of his commitment to personally supervise their examination to ensure that the best standard is maintained. The delegation also presented the advocacy statement to the director.

At the Office of the Chief Security Officer, the delegation was warmly received by the CSO. Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Vice-President of the association, Confidence Nwachukwu, commended the school safety department for providing professional security services to students with visual impairment. He however called for sanctions for some transporters within the campus environment who are in the habit of discriminating against their members. He revealed that the situation has become a huge source of concern to visually impaired persons as the uncivilized behaviour has continued to go unchecked.

The delegation which was led by the association’s President, Enoch Chioma Lillian, had Frank Obiefune, Emmanuel Somtochukwu Okoye, Favour Amarachi Atta, Confidence Nwachukwu, the association’s Vice-President and Favour Ezinne Onele, the Public Relations Officer. A team of representatives from the Visually Impaired Students' Association of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (VISNUA) with the mandate of the Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER) conducted a successful advocacy and courtesy visits to the Office of the Chief Librarian today. The purpose of the visit was to address the pressing needs for a well-equipped resource facility for visually impaired students at the university.

According to the President of VISNUA, Miss Enoch Chioma Lilian, the advocacy team was led by Mr. Meze Chinedu, the association's Secretary General, along with the treasurer, Uduchukwu Rejoice, a member of the association, Eyibio Patience, and a volunteer, met with Professor Stella Ifeoma Nancy, the Chief Librarian of the University to discuss the current status of the University's resource center for visually impaired students.

During the meeting, Professor Stella Ifeoma Nancy acknowledged the existing resource center but highlighted the significant lack of essential equipment necessary for the academic needs of visually impaired students. She also expressed her openness to partnering with individuals or organizations willing to support the cause, and even mentioned the possibility of naming the resource center after a generous benefactor who could provide the necessary funds for its complete equipment.

In response, Meze Chinedu, on behalf of the association, expressed gratitude for Professor Stella's transparency and commitment to addressing the challenges faced by visually impaired students at the university. The team members appreciated her dedication to seeking potential partners and fundraising opportunities to ensure the resource center's comprehensive equipment, ultimately aiming to enhance the academic performance and overall experience of visually impaired students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

CENDASNER, receives Wheelchairs, Sight canes and Crutches, from the Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation

In the spirit of kindness, responsibility and for the love of humanity, a nongovernmental organization, Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation has put smiles on the faces of students with disabilities in Unizik by donating sight canes for the visually impaired (blind), wheel chairs and crutches for the physically challenged students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

The event took place on Friday 19th July, 2024 at the premises of the Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research, (CENDASNER), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

In his welcome speech and appreciation to the CEO of the Foundation, Enyi Ezenwanyi Egbunike Agbakoba (who was ably represented); the director of CENDASNER, Prof. Williams Emeka Obiozor, applauded the Foundation and benefactor for remembering disabled students and her other numerous humanitarian projects worldwide. He disclosed that CENDASNER had received various interventions in the past which positively affected and touched the lives of students with disabilities on campus.

Professor Obiozor stressed that this initiative of lending support to students with disabilities on campus is an ongoing process since 2019 when the Centre was established till date.

"CENDASNER has focused on providing opportunities for scholarships, disability aides, and essence of research, including opportunities for skill acquisition training which are programmed to promote the education, entrepreneurship, personal development and general wellbeing of students with disabilities in UNIZIK. We have made significant successes and investments through provision of academic and non academic assistances to these students. The Centre has a Skill Acquisition Training Building under construction which needs public funding support," he said.

Prof. Obiozor further thanked the CEO of the charity organization, Enyi Ezenwanyi Egbunike Agbakoba; presented an Award of Appreciation to her, as well as prayed for the sustainability of the foundation to keep her philanthropic gestures and services alive.

In his presentation of the gifts/disability aides to CENDASNER, the Cultural head of the Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation, Hon. Nwachi Edeogu explained that the secret behind Chief Mrs. Enyi Ezenwanyi Egbunike Agbakoba's charity works was born out of genuine love for humanity. He called on other organisations and privileged individuals to come to the aid of students with disabilities in these hard times.

Among the highlights of the short ceremony included the presentation of gifts to NAU's Acting Vice Chancellor; and Award of Excellence plaque and gifts to Professor Obiozor by the Foundation in recognition of his services and passion in advocating for the disabled community in Nigeria.

The representative of the Association of Students with Special Needs, NAU-AWKA, Miss Ruth NwaJesus, a final year Law student with visual impairment thanked the Global Queen of Ndidaland Charity Foundation and her Founder Enyi Ezenwanyi Egbunike Agbakoba for the kind gestures and appealed for more financial support from other humanitarian bodies to support CENDASNER projects.

The ceremony was concluded with a vote of thanks by the Nigeria manager of the Foundation, Hon. Arthur Udo who praised Unizik for establishing CENDASNER and promised that more support will be coming to the Centre from their founder.

Digital Revolution: UNIZIK Digital Inclusive Team Advocates for the Rights of Students with Disabilities

The UNIZIK Digital Inclusive Team, in partnership with the Global Research Network Think Tank, United Kingdom, and CENDASNER, Unizik, recently hosted a three-day Round Table Discussion titled "Disabilities Digital Inclusion Rights Advocacy." The event, held from Tuesday, 11th, Friday, 14th, Tuesday, 18th June 2024 at International Collaboration and Linkages, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, aimed to promote the rights of students with disabilities through digital awareness and equip them with technological devices for inclusivity advocacy.

The first day of the round table discussion featured four discussants. The session was facilitated by Dr. Mariagoretti Obiakor; Fellow African Inclusion Alliance, Fellow Digital Equity and Innovation USA, Member Global Research Network UK; who is also a lecturer in the Department of Education Management and Policy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, defined digital technology as encompassing all electronic technologies that generate, store, and process data using "ON and OFF" states. She also explained that any device assisting individuals in achieving their goals is considered digital and digitalized devices are electronic machines that store data in symbolic and alphabetical languages.

Dr. Obiakor also underscored how digitalization fosters innovation and creativity, crucial in making students with disabilities relevant in today's digital landscape. Digitizing processes and workflows can streamline tasks, automate processes, and enhance speed and accuracy, resulting in cost savings, improved resource allocation, and faster response times.

“This can contribute to student's competitiveness and growth. Digitalization also enables greater accessibility and convenience. With digital platforms, information and services can be accessed remotely, providing flexibility and convenience. She highlighted digital technology as GSM phones, simplifies the key importance of digitalization lies in its ability to enhance efficiency and productivity, particularly in education, digitalization can bridge gaps and improve access to essential resources for students with disabilities” she said.

Moreover, digitalization fosters innovation. Leveraging digital technologies such as AI, big data analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) can generate valuable insights and lead to the development of novel solutions to complex challenges. This capacity for innovation is essential for ensuring the relevance of students with disabilities in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Professor Williams Emeka Obiozor, the Director of the Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER), who discussed inclusivity for students with disabilities in UNIZIK and Nigeria. He highlighted the need for an inclusive and accessible environment for PWDs, stressing the importance of valuing them as members of the community and providing equal learning and workplace opportunities.

Professor Obiozor of Adult Education and Special Learning also mentioned initiatives such as the "One $treet" radio program, aimed at raising awareness about disabilities and promoting inclusion. Additionally, he outlined the "YES I CAN" project, an annual celebration showcasing the abilities of students with disabilities and promoting self-sufficiency.

The third discussant focus was on the creation of employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The speaker emphasized the positive impact of job creation and entrepreneurship skills, such as self-sufficiency, improved self-image, the opportunity to build a meaningful life, and connecting with like-minded individuals.

Dr. Gladys Ozuluonye Chime, a lecturer at the Department of Education Management and Policy at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, discussed the importance of promoting vocational and entrepreneurship skills for people with disabilities. She highlighted that providing access to foundational support, including assistive devices and resources, can significantly enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

Dr. Chime also pointed out the significant challenges faced by students with disabilities, such as social stigma and the lack of vocational and entrepreneurial skills. She emphasized the need to create a more inclusive and supportive environment to counter these challenges and prevent the exploitation of individuals with disabilities.

Another discussant, Mrs. Amauche Ogah, discussed the rights and use of library resources among students with disabilities. She particularly emphasized the need for policies that would allow these students to occupy front seats in classrooms for better auditory access.

Mrs. Ogah shared her experiences as a student coordinator at CENDASNER, highlighting the efforts to advocate for students' rights and address the challenges they face in accessing library resources. She also mentioned ongoing efforts to make the vocational center more accessible to students with disabilities.

During the 3-day round table discussion organized by the UNIZIK Inclusive Team, a visually impaired student from the Department of Guidance and Counseling at UNIZIK, Miss Mbajiogu Precious Nzubechukwu, expressed her thoughts on the event, describing it as insightful and beneficial. She emphasized the importance of meeting and engaging with like-minded individuals to address the challenges faced by the disabled community.

Miss Mbajiogu stressed that many disabled students lack access to and knowledge of technological devices due to financial constraints. She highlighted the need for electronic voice recorders, phones, and laptops to better integrate with society. She emphasized the necessity for enhanced skills and knowledge in utilizing digital technologies to improve academic performance and self-sufficiency in the future.

The second day of the event featured a dynamic round table discussion themed "Life Skills for Students with Disabilities". Dr. Mariagoretti Obiakor served as the facilitator, and the speakers included Dr. Chinenye Amaonye, Dr. Gladys Chinwe, Dr. Juliana Nkechi Nwaodo, and Dr. Nwama Winifred. Each lecturers addressed key areas such as social skills, emotional skills, confidence, communication skills, and personal hygiene among students with disabilities, advocating for the overall well-being and success of these students.

Dr. Mariagoreth Ijeoma Obiakor highlighted the importance of life skills in promoting social change among individuals with disabilities. She defined life skills as essential for full participation in daily life, enabling individuals to effectively address life's demands and challenges.

The lecturer and facilitator stressed the significance of advocacy and identified various types of life skills, including personal hygiene, basic communication, emotional skills, and confidence. She emphasized the need to bridge the gap in economic empowerment by providing students with disabilities access to essential skills, citing it as crucial for Nigeria's development and economic prosperity.

“The low representation of individuals with disabilities in Nigeria's workforce and urged the government to invest in life skills to enhance economic prospects and overall growth. The importance of incorporating digital skills, creating a conducive learning environment, and providing life skills support for students with disabilities in their penultimate year of university education” she said.

Dr. Nwama Winifred also stressed the significance of proper personal hygiene practices for overall health and well-being, particularly for female students with disabilities. She highlighted the need for proper menstrual hygiene practices and called for improved access to sanitation facilities and personal hygiene products in public spaces and schools.

The speaker advocated for policy changes to ensure free or subsidized personal hygiene products and called for the design of accessible and inclusive sanitation facilities for individuals with disabilities and special needs. Her discussion aimed to drive awareness and advocate for a future where lack of personal hygiene does not impede the health, education, or dignity of students with disabilities.

During the discussion, Dr. Juliana Nkechi Nwaodo emphasized the importance of communication tools for students with disabilities, underscoring the challenges they face in accessing adaptive technology and the need for personalized learning paths. She highlighted the role of communication skills in promoting cognitive development and enhancing various skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving.

The fourth speaker, Dr. Gladys Chinwe, delved into the emotional aspects and confidence of students with disabilities. She stressed the importance of group discussions to challenge stereotypes and create a more supportive environment for students. She also advocated for the use of personal storytelling to foster empathy and understanding of the social and emotional aspects of disabilities.

The round table discussion provided a platform for open dialogue and allowed discussants to address misconceptions and myths about students with disabilities, ultimately fostering a more informed and empathetic perspective. The discussion succeeded in shedding light on the importance of digital inclusion in advocating for the rights of students with disabilities and fostering inclusivity in educational and workplace settings.

Bridging the Gap: Empowering the Persons with Disabilities in Anambra State, Solution and Sustainability for a Brighter Future

There has been a comprehensive solution unveiled by Prof. Williams Emeka Obiozor to ensure that persons with disabilities in Anambra State have access to a better quality of life. The Event is a Town hall meeting called by the wife of the Governor Dr. Mrs Nonye Soludo on Wednesday June 11, 2024 at Anambra State Governor's lodge Awka.

He expressed gratitude to Her Excellency, Dr. Nonye Soludo, for providing the opportunity to address the issue of finding lasting solutions through empowerment in Anambra State.

Professor Williams Emeka Obiozor, who is also the director at the Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities, including those with deafness, blindness, speech disorders, and mental disorders, among others. He pointed out the prevalent negligence towards this community within the state and highlighted the role of the state government in implementing solutions through empowerment and sustainability.

His presentation titled “Solution and Sustainable Empowerment of Persons with Disability in Anambra State” emphasized the need for the government to prioritize the revival of rehabilitation centers across the state and ensure accommodations for people with disabilities, including housing, job opportunities, healthcare, and education services. Additionally, he stressed the importance of recreational facilities, social events, and vocational training for the empowerment and independence of youths and adults with disabilities.

Professor Obiozor recalled the prioritization of empowering Anambraians with education and vocational skills were set priorities when we deliberated and penned down the state’s Social Agenda and Education during the 3-day Vision 2070 Project at Agulu Lake Resort shortly before the elections which ushered in this Solution Government. He pointed that the “1Youth 2 Skills Project” initiated by the state government, emphasizing the need to extend such privileges to persons with disabilities. He underscored the role of government in formulating policies, implementing programs, and providing appropriate training services for the disabled community.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of providing seed money for entrepreneurship activities after training and advocating for the use of technologies to bridge communication and institutional barriers. The campaign “Solution and Sustainability” aims to empower persons with disabilities and catalyze transformative change within the Anambra community. Professor of Adult Education and Special Learning called for collective action and support for this transformative campaign, envisioning a more inclusive and empowered Anambra community.

The event was attended by dignitaries including Her Excellency, Dr. Nonye Soludo, the Chairman of JONAPWD, Mazi Ugochukwu, and members of JONAPWD and the disability community.

I composed this series (Part 1) to highlight the exceptional leadership of Professor Williams Emeka Obiozor( Igboekuteaku), a distinguished scholar and educator at the Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria.

The fundamental principle I gleaned from Prof. Williams Obiozor is that a true leader renders himself "UNNECESSARY." I have personally witnessed his extraordinary leadership styles and find his natural inclination towards ordinary people to be particularly noteworthy. His loves for service and dedication to effecting positive change have left an indelible impression on me.

After observing the considerable challenges faced by disabled individuals and the remarkable work undertaken at CENDASNER, I felt compelled to articulate my admiration in written form. Prof. Williams' authentic love for God and people, combined with his strategic approach, serves as the impetus behind the favorable developments at CENDASNER, UNIZIK.

Prof. Williams Emeka Obiozor's journey from a modest background to attaining the position of a Professor of Adult Learning and Special Education exemplifies resilience, dedication, and unwavering determination. Despite encountering numerous hurdles, he pursued academic excellence and holds a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His commitment to effecting positive change has garnered recognition on both national and international platforms. He continues to inspire others through his mentorship and leadership, instilling the values of dedication and perseverance in the next generation of leaders.

An alumnus of University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, United States of America; Wilmington University of Delaware, USA; and University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is a versatile scholar haven received two masters degrees (Adult Education and Community Development; Instruction and Learning/Special Education); and a doctor of Education (ED.D degree) in Leadership and Innovation in Education. He taught Special Education and Exceptionalities at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, USA, as well as the Deputy Director of the Frederick Douglass Institute of the institution.

He is a visiting professor to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Ebonyi State University; Enugu State University, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education and so on from 2018-2020. He served as the Rector, Nation Builders College of Technology, Asaba, Delta State.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Prof. Williams is a recipient of the United States Congressional Youth Leadership Award recipient in 2006 at Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. and has made substantial contributions as a special education resource teacher in the Maryland Public Schools System and Adult literacy research consultant at Sojourner Douglass College (4year degree awarding institution) in Cambridge and Salisbury campuses of Maryland-Eastern Shores, United States of America.

As an accomplished scholar, Prof. Williams has authored over 65 scholarly publications and served as the founding editor-in-chief of reputable journals. His book, "Globalization for Adult Education: Theories and Strategies for Instructors," published in 2014, is widely utilized in tertiary institutions for adult education programmes. He consults with NATCOM-UNESCO, UNICEF, NCCE, NUC etc. He has led so many accreditation and resource verification panels to many Nigerian tertiary and higher institutions for the National Universities Commission (NUC) and National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) since 2012.

In 2021, he won a grant of over $100,000 from the African Export Import Bank (AFREXIM) Cairo-Egypt for Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER) and in 2023, his Center was instrumental to the winning of Gold Award for Nnamdi Azikiwe University as the Best University in Nigeria that provides access to persons with disabilities for higher education, courtesy of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

He is presently the Director of CENDASNER which was established in 2019 with 11 students with disabilities but today has an enrollment of over 100 students studying different course in the University. He has groomed so many researchers and scholars in the field of Education. He also runs the One$treet Radio $how syndicated in 94.1 FM Radio station in Awka. Prof. Obiozor is married with four. He loves playing tennis and writing academic book and romance novels.

UNLOCKING CHIBUZOR MADUFORO'S POTENTIAL: CENDASNER, UNIZIK OFFERS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE.

To support students with disabilities and ensure more persons with disability have access to quality education, CENDASNER has put smiles on a 3rd year blind student named Chibuzor Maduforo at Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research office today.

The director of the centre has offered 100 Thousand Naira only to him through CENDASNER student Trust Fund. "Our financial stewardship has been instrumental to this change and we are excited to reveal the trajectory this centre is making to ensure the welfare of people with disability is profound evidently," he said.

During the presentation, Prof. said " we understood that his family are in difficulty supporting him as he concludes his 3rd year programme. We don't want him to be a drop out".

Williams Obiozor, Prof. of Adult Learning and Special Education stressed the needs for our wealthy Nigerians to assist people with disability, and such efforts gives a long way in turning around the future of the people with disability.

Highlighting how the money would be disbursed, the director said 75,000 to cover his completion of tuition; 10,000 Teaching Practice booklet and 15,000 for transportation fare to a place for his student teaching in Awka North Local Government Area, Anambra State.

"This initiative of lending support to students with disabilities on campus is an ongoing process since 2020 till date. Thanks to the support of Chikason Group, Chief Sims Ezeani (Omelora Neni), GUO, Dubai Estates and Big Ben Fashions, Prof. Benedict Okey Oramah and Afrexim Bank of Cairo, Egypt, among others. We highly appreciate these philanthropic individuals and companies" he added.
