NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA, MATRICULATES OVER 13,000 NEW STUDENTS.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has officially welcomed over 13,000 new students into its seventeen (17) faculties with their various academic programmes in the institution for the 2024/2025 academic session.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikechebelu, FAMedS, FNAMed, welcomed and congratulated the fresh students for scaling through the stiff competition of gaining admission into the university of the moment, named after the great Zik of Africa, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the University of all Times. He also commended the parents and guardians on the milestone.

Prof. Ikechebelu urged the freshers to remain focused on their academic goals, cautioning them against social vices, examination misconduct, certificate forgery and absenteeism from classes.

Prof. Ikechebelu outlined his vision for the university, dubbed "BEAUTIFY UNIZIK; Light-up UNIZIK, Excellent UNIZIK, Safe and Secure UNIZIK; and Digitize UNIZIK (BLESSED UNIZIK) with a hedgehog concept of (HPS)² Happy Productive Staff and Happy Progressive Students.

The matriculation ceremony held, Friday, January 24, 2025 in different facilities, was presided over by the Deans and other faculty officials. The ceremony featured Oath taking (Oath of loyalty and the Oath against secret cults) by the new students, as they all pledged their allegiance.

In line with using his talents to contribute to the growth of the University, Comrade Bonny Ozo Nkwuaku anchored the Unizik Matriculation Ceremony for Faculty of Engineering on Friday, 24th January, 2025.

The Ceremony featured:

SSANU UNIZIK Congress Held on Thursday 16th January, 2025 At The Multipurpose Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka

The 7-member Credentials (Electoral) Committee for SSANU UNIZIK Election was successfully nominated, ratified and inaugurated on Thursday, 16th January, 2025 at Multipurpose Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, during a Crucial SSANU Congress under the supervision of the National Vice President of SSANU, South East Zone, Comrade Engr. Okey Animba and the Zonal Treasurer, Comrade Dr. Linus Akata.


According to Branch Secretary, SSANU UNIZIK, Comrade Bonny Ozo Nkwuaku, "this was preceded by the usual solidarity song, opening prayer and brief remarks by the SSANU Chairperson, Unizik, Comrade Dr. Njideka Nwangwu, who thereafter introduced the National Vice President of SSANU South East Zone Comrade Engr. Okey Animba and the Zonal Treasurer, Comrade Dr. Linus Akata."

After a brief remark by the National Vice President of SSANU South East Zone, Comrade Engr. Okey Animba, he directed the Zonal Treasurer, Comrade Dr. Linus Akata who read out a correspondence from the SSANU National approving the holding of the crucial Congress and the suspension of other activities.

After making further references and cited relevant portions of the SSANU Constitution to justify the day's exercise, Congress then went into the sole business of the day and nominated, ratified, and inaugurated the members of the Credentials Committee.

The Credentials Committee has 4 women and 3 men as members.

Addressing the Concerns of Unpaid Staff at Unizik: A Commitment from Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu


The administration of Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, FAmeds, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, wishes to reassure all unpaid staff that it is earnestly dedicated to resolving their ongoing challenges. Prof. Ikechebelu's recent meeting with the unpaid staff in the Council Chamber on November 26, 2024, underscores his genuine commitment to alleviating these difficulties.

As a leader who prioritizes the well-being of both staff and students, Prof. Ikechebelu embodies a vision articulated through the acronym BLESSeD—Beautify Unizik, Light-up Unizik, Excellent Unizik, Safe & Secure Unizik and Digitize Unizik. He is actively pursuing solutions to bring relief to the affected staff and restore financial stability to their families.

Recognizing the harsh realities of providing for a family in today’s economic climate, Prof. Ikechebelu approaches these issues with empathy. His Christian values guide his understanding of scarcity amid abundance, and he finds it vital to advocate for the university community in their time of need.

It is crucial to emphasize that the university's management is not indifferent to the plight of its staff. Previous administrations made genuine efforts to address these challenges. While obstacles may have surfaced in the past, the current administration's commitment to progressing these efforts deserves acknowledgment and support.

During the meeting on November 26, 2024, Prof. Ikechebelu assured the unpaid staff that their cases are being processed by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and emphasized that they would soon be absorbed into the system. He reiterated the university's dedicated approach in resolving these matters.

Prof. Ikechebelu also confirmed that his submissions to the Budget Office are intact, and payment processes will begin as soon as clearance is achieved. He affirmed that his promises hold weight and that he is committed to transparency and accountability.

Additionally, he reassured the unpaid staff that they would be eligible for the productivity bonus extended to other staff members once resources permit.

In light of these developments, the administration of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, once again calls for patience and understanding from our staff. With faith in our collective efforts, we are hopeful that these issues will be resolved promptly. The university remains steadfast in its commitment to the welfare of its staff.

2024 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES (IDPD): CENDASNER, UNIZIK CELEBRATES WITH STUDENT'S WITH DISABILITIES.

UNIZIK - As the world commemorates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) on December 3rd, 2024, students with disabilities in the Centre of Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER) in the Nnamdi Azikiwe, UNIZIK campus have advocated for comprehensive inclusion of persons with disabilities in all facets of human activities.

CENDASNER organized a march and procession within the university to celebrate the day for public awareness.
The walk from the CENDASNER office by the main library through to the Administration Building of the University, drew the attention of media organizations and staff, persistently advocate for inclusion and support for the rights of persons with disabilities in the society.

In an interview with the Director of the Centre, Prof. Williams Emeka Obiozor, the international event is meant for promoting the inclusion of persons with disabilities in national development, as well celebrate those who have distinguished themselves in various fields of human endeavor irrespective if their disabilities. He expressed his gratitude to the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebulu and the Management of UNIZIK for the establishment of CENDASNER, for support towards the centre and disabled students. Prof Obiozor also thanked AFREXIM bank, Queen of Ndidaland Internation Foundation, Sir Jonathan C Nzekwe, among other philantropists who support CENDASNER.

"Today is about promoting the rights and well- being of persons with disabilities at every level of society and development, and to raise awareness about persons with disabilities in all aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. Established since 2019, CENDASNER has disabled students across various departments in the university.

During the sensitization march led by the deputy director II of CENDASNER, Associate Prof. Syvila Obi stressed the commitment to assisting persons with disabilities to study in the university and called for collaborative efforts from all relevant stakeholders to ensure inclusiveness for all disabled students and staff in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Highlights of the celebrations include a speech from a visually impaired student in the Faculty of Law, Master Tochhukwu Obiefuna who stated that the awareness on celebrating International Day of Persons with Disability is excellent. He pointed out the impact of digital literacy challenge on blind students and called on the government and well meaning individuals to provide scholarships for the economically disadvantaged blind students. He further urged the incorporation of sign language experts and interpreters to facilitate effective communication and participation during lectures and event of disabled students.

The event brought together representative from all clusters of disabled student groups in the University who engaged in the procession to create awareness on the issues affecting the Disability community.

Federal University Gusau Validates Prof. Benard Odoh's Professorship

The Federal University of Gusau has validated Professor Benard Odoh's Professorship following the argument surrounding his academic qualifications as recently appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

In the affirmative, Federal University Gusau has reaffirmed that Odoh's assessment to the rank of Professorship in Geological Sciences took effect on October 1, 2015.

A certified true copy of the appointment letter, dated November 12, 2015, and signed by Registrar Ibrahim B. Kaura, states:

"...the university management, having received favorable assessment reports from three assessors, has approved your promotion to Professor in Geological Sciences on CONUAS Step 1, effective October 1, 2015."

This authentication contradicts the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) President's claims that Odoh is not a full professor. Nnamdi Azikiwe University authorities have countered ASUU's position, alleging that some individuals are using the platform to pursue personal agendas after losing the Vice Chancellorship contest.

The university stated:

"Desperate characters, found culpable for academic infractions, are hiding behind ASUU's banner to spread falsehood and distort facts for selfish gains."

The letter of authentication from Federal University Gusau validates Odoh's professorship, putting the controversy to rest.

This clarification reaffirms Odoh's academic credentials and legitimacy as Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Prof. Benard Odoh's appointment to full professorship at Federal University Gusau was preceded by his appointment as a Visiting Professor in 2014 at the same institution. Notable academics, including Prof. P.O. Okeke and Prof. Aigbedion Isaac, evaluated Odoh's qualifications, research, and experience, giving him a high recommendation for professorship.

Contrary to claims that Odoh wasn't on Federal University Gusau's staff list, records show he was listed as number 45 in 2015 with staff number SP.O48 under Grade level 07/01.

Regarding the Academic Staff Union of Universities' (ASUU) claims about the appointment process for Nnamdi Azikiwe University's Vice Chancellor and Registrar, the university's Registrar clarified that the Governing Council followed established protocols and laws, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act and Standing Orders.

The selection process involved rigorous oral interviews, candidate assessments, and consensus among Council Members. Despite some opposition, the university is moving forward under Prof. Odoh's leadership, with staff and students united in support.

Since assuming office, Prof. Odoh has promoted research, learning, and productivity without disruptions, executing his blueprint for the university.

The 13th edition of the lecture series, held at the ASUU Secretariat in the Awka campus, served as the platform for Professor Odoh's announcement. He took the opportunity to express his gratitude to Senator Ben Obi, the benefactor of the lecture series, for his unwavering support. Senator Obi's influence has been instrumental in attracting prominent national and international figures to the lectures.

Professor Odoh also shared his vision for the university's future, outlining a disruptive development model designed to enhance academic quality, innovation, and competitiveness. His goal is to rank Nnamdi Azikiwe University among the top 50 institutions in Africa.

The event's chairman, Governor of Enugu State Dr. Peter Mbah, praised the legendary Zik of Africa, emphasizing the importance of emulating his leadership model. UNIZIK - The governments of Anambra and Enugu States have pledged their support for Professor Benard Odoh, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, during a courtesy visit to his office at the Awka campus. This visit coincided with the 13th edition of the Annual Zik Lecture Series.

Anambra State Governor, represented by Deputy Gilbert Ibezim, expressed optimism about Professor Odoh's ability to fulfill his plans for the institution. Similarly, Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, commended Professor Odoh's foresightedness and pledged his government's readiness to partner with the university to ensure a successful era. Governor Mbah also expressed confidence in Professor Odoh's capacity to put the institution on the global map.

In a significant step following his recent appointment, Prof. Bernard Ifeanyichukwu Odoh, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), toured the university on Monday, November 4, 2024, as the 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university. Prof. Odoh, accompanied by the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Rev. Fr. Prof. Peter Agbonome, embarked on a comprehensive tour of several university facilities.

The visit was aimed to assess the state of the university’s infrastructure and identify areas that require strategic support to enhance service delivery for both staff and students.

During the tour, the Vice-Chancellor reiterated his commitment to re-positioning UNIZIK as a leader in academic excellence by fortifying its various units, departments, and centres. His vision focuses on fostering a conducive environment that supports teaching, learning, and research at the highest level.

The offices and facilities visited included the Records Unit, Admissions Unit, Office of the Registrar, Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics, Office of the Deputy Vice- Chancellor Administration, Postgraduate College, the University Auditorium, Business School, Department of Architecture, and the Library.

Prof. Odoh's proactive engagement reflects his dedication to propelling the university to greater heights and ensuring effective operations within the institution.
