A creative group, Oyomma Dance Troupe of the Music Department at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has unveiled the maiden Oyomma Dance at Professorial thanksgiving of Professor Derek Orji, Professor of Applied Linguistics.

The event, which was held at ASUU Secretariat, NAU on 6th July 2025, is in line with the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi's vision of inclusivity and making UNIZIK more than an education hub, promises an unforgettable experience and academic performance.

In an inspiring effort to spotlight the intersection of Thanksgiving, cultural dance and creative expression, Pastor Ikedimma Okeke, Creative Director of Oyomma Dance and Head of Department, Music, officially announced the maiden dance at the event.

During an exclusive interview, Pastor Dr. Ikedimma Okeke described the initiative as more than just a dance, but was created to nurture talents and engage them productively.

" This is not just another dance; it is a powerful fusion of music, dance, designed to glorify and highlight the beauty of African Cultural expression," he said. We want to create a platform that uplifts, inspires and rewards productivity.

The Head of Department, further stated that the Oyomma Dance Troupe is a part of a larger vision to position UNIZIK as a beacon of cultural site in Nigeria, attracting stakeholders and creatives to experience us.

In a bid to connect with students and address their needs, Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi paid a visit to the students' hostels at the Awka Campus on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The visit was marked by warm receptions from the students, who were eager to share their concerns with the Acting Vice-Chancellor.

At the Stella Okoli female hostel, Prof. Arinze-Umobi was met with jubilation. She expressed her love for the students and stated that her visit aimed to identify and solve their problems. In a gesture of goodwill, she handed over several cartons of sanitary pads, which she personally funded.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor also visited Prof. Dora Akunyili Hostel, where students appreciated her philanthropic gestures and shared their challenges.

At the male hostels, including Prof. Basil Oli and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Hostels, students expressed their gratitude towards the philanthropic gesture of the Acting Vice-Chancellor and listed their challenges. Prof. Arinze-Umobi assured them of prompt attention to their challenges.

CENDASNER, UNIZIK Donates to Albinism Society Trust Fund

The Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has donated N20,000 to the Albinism Society Trust Fund during an event celebrating International Albinism Awareness Day. This event was organized in collaboration with the VIVIGOLD Foundation and the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission.

In his welcome address, Mr. Israel Ephraim Ben, the State Chairman of the Anambra State Albinism Association, highlighted that the 2025 International Albinism Awareness Day serves as an opportunity to celebrate resilience, advocacy, unity, and progress towards inclusion and equity for individuals with albinism in Anambra State and beyond. The day also marked the official unveiling of the VIVIGOLD Foundation.

He expressed his gratitude to Prof. Williams Emeka Obiozor, Director of CENDASNER, as well as the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, and Comrade Vivian Ezeonwumelu, founder of the VIVIGOLD Foundation and the pioneering Chairperson of the Anambra State Albinism Association, for their support and commitment.

“As we commemorate this day, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a state and a world where no person with albinism is left behind; where our health, safety, and rights are protected, and where we are empowered to live with dignity and pride. This vision cannot be achieved alone. I would like to sincerely thank my fellow executives of the Anambra State Albinism Association for their tireless dedication and teamwork.

“We also appeal to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to expand insurance coverage for persons with albinism beyond the state, enabling access to hospitals equipped with chemotherapy and radiotherapy services—vital for effective skin cancer treatment,” he stated.

Representing Prof. Williams Emeka Obiozor, the Director of Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research (CENDASNER), was his deputy, Dr. Victor N. Oguaka. He urged the albinism community to persist in pursuing education, as it remains the key to a successful future. He also called on supporters of persons with albinism and disabilities to continue providing love and care, as they are the backbone of our community.

Department of Applied Microbiology and Brewing Hosts Metagenomics Workshop: "From Raw Reads to Insights"

The Department of Applied Microbiology and Brewing, under the Faculty of Biosciences, successfully conducted a three-day intensive training program titled "From Raw Reads to Insights: Metagenomics Analysis and Microbial Diversity." Held from June 2nd to June 4th, 2025, in the Faculty of Biosciences Boardroom, the workshop provided participants with cutting-edge knowledge and practical skills in metagenomics research.

The program covered essential topics, including Fundamentals of Metagenomics in Microbiome Research and quality control and Metagenomics assembly, taxonomic profiling using MetaPhlAn and Alpha & beta diversity metrics

Professor Effiong Edet Bassey, Head of the Department of Applied Microbiology and Brewing, represented the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, and commended the facilitators and organizing team for their efforts in delivering an impactful workshop.

In his address, Prof. Bassey emphasized the workshop’s significance in addressing critical challenges in data collection, analysis, and presentation within the research community. He highlighted the potential for innovation, collaboration, and scientific transformation, reinforcing the department’s commitment to advancing research and fostering academic excellence.

Mr. Francis Muoghalu, a Research Data Scientist and Health Informatics Specialist, delivered an insightful presentation on "Introduction to Metagenomics, "defining it as the study of collective genomes from microbial communities. He elaborated on key techniques, applications, and analytical approaches in metagenomics research.

Additionally, Mr. Muoghalu provided a step-by-step guide on RNA-Seq Data Analysis, detailing preprocessing of raw sequencing data, quality assessment using tools like Gene expression quantification and biological interpretation

He explained the importance of quality control in sequencing workflows, explaining how tools such as quality control and trimmomatic help detect and rectify issues like adapter contamination, sequence duplication, and low-quality reads, ensuring robust downstream analysis.

The first day concluded with an engaging Questions & Answers session, where lecturers and postgraduate students discussed key concepts and explored real-world applications of metagenomics in microbial research.

This workshop marks a significant step in strengthening research capabilities and fostering collaborative scientific advancements within the academic community.

UNIZIK Branch of SSANU and NASU Rejects 20% Allocation Formula for N50 Billion Earned Allowance

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University has expressed its opposition to the allocation formula employed by the Federal Government for the disbursement of the N50 billion Earned Allowance (EA) targeted at university-based unions.

In a statement jointly signed by Comrade Chukwudi Anthonia, SSANU Chairperson, UNIZIK Branch, and Comrade Ikegulu Chukwugozie, NASU Chairman, UNIZIK Branch, it was highlighted that “allocating 80% of the funds to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) while designating only 20% for SSANU, NASU, and NAAT is not only inequitable but also undermines the essential role played by non-teaching staff in the effective operation and advancement of Nigerian universities.”

The statement emphasized the necessity to remind both the government and the public that the N50 billion allocation was intended to address part of the earned allowance arrears resulting from a collective bargaining agreement established after the 2022 industrial action between JAC (SSANU and NASU) and the Federal Government.

JAC urges the Federal Government to take immediate action to reverse this decision to avert potential disharmony and disruption of academic and administrative functions in universities.

The JAC expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the recent appointment of external council members, which will facilitate the effective operation of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka

“We appreciate our members for their patience in the face of this grievance. The National Leadership of JAC is actively engaged in addressing this injustice. We remain committed to pursuing this issue until a favourable resolution is achieved.

“SSANU-NASU (JAC) UNIZIK stands firm for integrity, equity, and justice in solidarity with all its members,” the statement concluded.

UNIZIK: PROFESSOR CAROL ARINZE-UMOBI ASSUMES OFFICE AS THE ACTING VICE-CHANCELLOR.

Professor Carol C. Arinze-Umobi has assumed office today as the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Arinze-Umobi, a Professor of Laws, took over from Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, FAMedS, as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor following the expiration of his tenure.

In his handover speech, Professor Ikechebelu thanked President Tinubu and Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, for their special affection for the University. He further thanked the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Barr. Olugbenga M. Kokoyi, for piloting the affairs of the council and the University with vigor and focus for excellence. Ikechebelu expressed satisfaction with Professor Umobi's appointment and assured her of his availability and support during her administration.

"Today, I am privileged to transmit the powers conferred on me to our new Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, and to assure her of my availability and support for her administration. This is to ensure the continued growth and development of UNIZIK..." Ikechebelu stated. He also requested the Management, Staff, and Students to support the Acting Vice-Chancellor for the greater good of the university.

In her response, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Arinze-Umobi, expressed appreciation to God Almighty for finding her worthy for the appointment. She thanked the outgoing Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ikechebelu, for the handing-over note and assured that the document would be a guide. Speaking further, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Arinze-Umobi, assured the university community that she is taking over with the vision of "FEELING THE PULSE OF STUDENTS AND STAFF" as she pledged to do her best within the shortest possible time. Umobi further asked God for the wisdom of Solomon and promised to operate an all-inclusive administration; hence, she called on all to come together and support her administration as the university moves ahead.

UNIZIK Governing Council Reappoints Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi as First Female Acting Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has approved the reappointment of Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi as the institution’s Acting Vice-Chancellor. This historic reappointment makes her the first female to hold the position in the university’s history.

The decision was conveyed in a letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi. According to the letter, the appointment, which takes effect on May 19, 2025, is for an initial period of (6) six months, in compliance with Section 5(13) of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act 2003.

The letter stated: "The Governing Council has approved your appointment as Acting Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of the University Senate. Your tenure shall not exceed six months or until a substantive Vice-Chancellor is appointed, whichever comes first. The terms and conditions of your appointment align with the Federal Government’s guidelines for all federal universities."

The Federal Ministry of Education has formally acknowledged the appointment, affirming that due process was followed in line with statutory requirements.

In a press release signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations on behalf of the Minister of Education, the Ministry expressed confidence in Professor Arinze-Umobi’s leadership.

"The selection process adhered strictly to the provisions of the Universities Act, involving nomination by the University Senate and subsequent approval by the Governing Council. The Ministry is satisfied that due process was observed and commends the university for upholding transparency and merit-based leadership," the statement read.

As Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Arinze-Umobi will oversee the day-to-day administration of the university, coordinate academic and administrative functions, and ensure the institution’s smooth operation during the transition period.

The Federal Ministry of Education reiterated its commitment to university autonomy, transparency, and meritocracy in the appointment of leaders across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

UNIZIK Management Officially Recognizes Comrade Chukwudi Anthonia-Led SSANU Executives

The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has formally acknowledged the Comrade Chukwudi Anthonia-led executives as the legitimate leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), UNIZIK Branch.

In a memo dated 25th April 2025(Ref. No: NAU/REG/57A/74), the University Registrar, Mr. Victor I. Modebelu, directed the university community to recognize only the duly elected executives under Comrade Chukwudi Anthonia. The memo further cautioned against any individual or group parading themselves as SSANU leaders or operating unofficial social media platforms in the association's name.

The Comrade Chukwudi Anthonia-led executive was elected on 25th March, 2025 during the 5th Quadrennial Congress held at the Multi-purpose Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

This announcement reaffirms the university's commitment to upholding due process and recognizing only duly constituted leadership within its community.

UNIZIK Nursing Department Inducts 103 Graduands of Class of 2024, "The Ille Excelsior", into the Noble Profession

NNEWI, April 11, 2025 — In a ceremony marked by pride, joy, and solemnity, the Department of Nursing Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), on Friday, April 11, 2025, formally inducted 103 graduands of the Class of 2024—proudly known as “The Ille Excelsior”—into the revered Nursing and Midwifery profession.

The 14th Induction and Oath-taking Ceremony, held at the College of Health Sciences, Okofia Campus, was a celebration of excellence, resilience, and a shared commitment to human service.

Representing the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, the Provost of the College, Prof. JKC Emejulu, delivered an uplifting address, commending the graduates and their families for their hard work and dedication. He also lauded the tireless efforts of both academic and non-academic staff in steering the department toward greater heights.

Prof. Ikechebelu’s BLESSeD UNIZIK vision—Beautify, Light-up, Excel, Safe and Secure, Digitize—was reiterated, with emphasis on fostering a culture of “Happy Productive Staff and Happy Progressive Students (HPS²).” He encouraged the new nurses to uphold the core values of the profession: compassion, dignity, and ethical practice.

Prof. Emejulu also applauded the leadership of Dr. Florence T. Sibeudu, Head of Department, for steering the department through a transformative era, including the pioneering use of the newly established 100-capacity CBT Centre at the Okofia Campus. He credited Prof. Ikechukwu Onyenwe and his team for the facility’s establishment and urged the graduates to consider giving back to their alma mater, even as they explore global opportunities.

In his first official induction ceremony as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology, Prof. C.O. Akosile described the Class of 2024 as exceptional—intelligent, ethical, and well-equipped for global impact. He also announced the institution of two new N50,000 awards to recognize academic excellence and exemplary conduct.

In her welcome address, Dr. Florence T. Sibeudu emphasized the dual significance of the occasion: the successful completion of a rigorous academic journey and the beginning of a lifelong vocation. She acknowledged the visionary leadership of the Vice Chancellor and expressed deep gratitude to stakeholders including the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) Registrar, Dr. Ndagi Alhassan, and past and present faculty leaders.

Dr. Alhassan, who administered the professional oath, praised the graduates’ tenacity and encouraged them to embrace ongoing professional development and innovations such as telemedicine and data analytics. He commended the induction planning committee for orchestrating a memorable event.

The guest lecture, delivered by Dr. Chikaodili Ihudiebube-Splendor from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, was titled “Standing Out as a Nurse: Career Opportunities and Global Prospects in Public Health.” She urged the graduands to explore diverse career paths with global health agencies like WHO, CDC, and NGOs such as Doctors Without Borders. Emphasis was placed on cultural competence, continuous learning, and advocacy for health equity.

The Department of Educational Management and Policy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, in collaboration with the Directorate of Grants Management and Development, Awka Window on America, Tansian University, Umunya, and the UNESCO Chair on Education, Research and Digital Inclusion, University of Alicante, Spain, recently held a one-day practical workshop.

The event, themed “Demystifying Grants Writing and Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunities through Practical Experiences and Applications,” took place on April 9, 2025, at the Conference Hall, Faculty of Education Building, UNIZIK. The workshop focused on capacity building in grant writing and fellowship research.

Representing the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, was Professor Ada Sam-Omenyi, Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor on Academic Matters. Professor Sam-Omenyi emphasized the significance of the workshop's theme in today’s academic climate. She reflected on her early days in academia, having begun teaching at the university level at just 27 years old, and described the Faculty of Education as “the mother of all faculties,” highlighting its foundational role in producing professionals across various sectors.

Speaking about the Acting Vice Chancellor, she noted:

Dr. Kingsley Chinaza Nwosu, Associate Professor of Educational Psychology, UNIZIK, underscored the importance of preparation in accessing postdoctoral fellowships. He described a postdoctoral fellowship as a training-focused position designed for scholars at the end or near completion of their PhD journey, facilitating their transition into independent researchers and early-career academics.

Dr. Christy Odimegwu, Consultant at Chris-Harris Research and Educational Services, spoke on “Transforming Research Articles into Research Projects in Education: From Ideas to Impact.” She demonstrated how academic papers could serve as the foundation for larger, impact-driven research projects.
For instance, she noted:
A paper on the relationship between creative leadership and research team productivity could inspire a project aimed at building leadership capacity among university research leaders.

She also emphasized collaboration, technological integration, and continuous training as vital tools for academic advancement.

Other notable speakers included Professor George Uchenna Eleje, Director of Grants Management and Development at UNIZIK, and Professor Rosa del Roig Vila, Director of the UNESCO Chair on Education, Research and Digital Inclusion, University of Alicante, Spain.

The workshop offered more than lectures—it featured interactive sessions, including roundtable discussions on fellowship opportunities, group work, brainstorming activities, and Q&A sessions. The event successfully bridged theory and practice, equipping participants with actionable tools for academic growth and grant acquisition.

On April 2, 2025, the newly elected Executive Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Branch, paid a courtesy visit on Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph I. Ikechebelu, in his office.

During the visit, the SSANU Vice-Chairman for the South East Zone, Comrade Engr. Okey Animba, encouraged the new executives to align with the BLESSeD Agenda of the Acting Vice-Chancellor. He commended Professor Ikechebelu for his commitment to fostering peace, progress, and development at UNIZIK since assuming office. Pledging the union’s unwavering support as a partner in progress, he also expressed optimism for the university’s continued growth.

Press Release: Impersonation of duly elected SSANU UNIZIK Branch Executive Committee.

1. Our attention has been drawn to an online circulation of a purported "new SSANU Executives" outside the duly elected Executive Committee led by Comrade Anthonia Chukwudi at the 5th Quadrennial Congress of SSANU UNIZIK held on Tuesday 25th March 2025.

2. Recall that the election of the Comrade Anthonia Chukwudi led executive at the 5th Quadrennial Congress of the Union was witnessed by the National President of SSANU and other National Officers amidst large turn out of members who participated actively in the process as enshrined in the SSANU Constitution, after receiving the blessing of the Vice-Chancellor(Acting), Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu.

3. Therefore, kindly disregard the charade organised by the expelled former Chairperson Dr. Njideka Nwangwu and her suspended cohorts. Their action is only a figment of their imagination, a desperation and joke taken too far by the same faceless group that had also circulated a writ of summons online claiming it was an order to stop the valid election which produced the Comrade Anthonia Chukwudi led executives.Is it not therefore laughable that the so called faceless group is now disobeying "their own purported court order?".

4. Their purported election that was not witnessed by the National Officers, the CSO as directed by the Vice-Chancellor(Acting), neither were there voters or a Credentials Committee could simply be described as a group of people who took photograph at the SSANU Secretariat.

5. SSANU is a respected Union of core professionals who conduct their business with dignity.

6. For the avoidance of doubt and information of the general public, the highest decision making organ of SSANU, National Executive Council (NEC) at its 50th Meeting held on Wednesday 26th February 2025 at the Federal University Otuoke Bayelsa State *expelled* Njideka Nwangwu from SSANU, while Kennedy Udechukwu, Confidence Okafor, Uche Sam-Chinweze, Uche Okafor were *suspended for 2 years*. Therefore they have no business with SSANU at the moment and the general public is hereby cautioned not to enter any business with them on behalf of SSANU.

7. Impersonation of duly constituted authority is a crime punishable by law.

8. Despite the provocation that has threatened the existing Law and Order in the University, we call on all Members to stay calm as the Executive Committee of our Branch shall come up with far reaching decisions to uproot the emerging Cancer and put an end to the scourge.

9. We also call the attention of the Vice-Chancellor (Acting) , the Chief Safety Officer of the University to quickly arrest this ugly attempt by faceless individuals to cause chaos and breakdown of law and order in the University.

UNIZIK's 19th Convocation: 8,157 Graduates, Honorary Doctorates for Ali Pate, Seyi Tinubu, and Chika Emenike

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has commenced its 19th Convocation Ceremony with a press briefing delivered by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikechebelu FAMeds, FNAMed, on behalf of the Senate, management, staff, and students.

Speaking at the Council Chamber, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu announced that the convocation, which began today, March 26, 2025, with a lecture by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, will conclude on Friday, March 28, 2025.

He revealed that a total of 8,157 students will be graduating across various academic levels. The breakdown includes 163 postgraduate students, 706 NTI postgraduate students, 680 Master of Science graduates, 463 Doctorate degree recipients, 16 PhD graduates from the University Business School, and three honorary degree recipients.

The convocation program includes an awards ceremony for outstanding students at the university auditorium on Wednesday, followed by the award of Bachelor’s degrees at the convocation arena on Thursday. Friday’s activities will feature the foundation-laying of new projects, commissioning of completed projects, award of higher degrees, honorary doctorate conferments, and the installation of Emeritus Professors.

Professor Ikechebelu highlighted the remarkable progress UNIZIK has achieved and announced that three distinguished individuals will be honored with honorary doctorate degrees:

SSANU, UNIZIK Elects Comrade Chukwudi Anothonia Chinenyenwa as Chairperson for First Four-Year Term

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), UNIZIK Branch, has successfully elected a new leadership team to steer the affairs of the union amid ongoing leadership challenges.

During the 5th Quadrennial Congress held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Comrade Chukwudi Anothonia Chinenyenwa emerged as the Branch Chairperson, securing a decisive victory with 300 votes as the sole candidate for the position.

In other closely contested races, Comrade Ofoebe Obierika Amuluchenna clinched the position of Vice-Chairperson with 139 votes, defeating Comrade Ozoemena Ifeyinwa Judith (119 votes) and Comrade Anugoh Augustine Chiragorom (65 votes).

For the office of Secretary, Comrade Anyali Tevin Chifum emerged victorious with 208 votes, surpassing Comrade Uzoma Anyaegbunam, who secured 134 votes in what was described as a tense contest.

In the Treasurer's race, Comrade Akujobi Tochukwu Prince triumphed with 133 votes, defeating Comrade Ejidike Uzoamaka Joy (115 votes) and Comrade Okoye Ogbalu Emmanuel (88 votes).

A Mandate for Progress and Unity

Expressing gratitude for her election, Comrade Chukwudi Anothonia Chinenyenwa described the mandate as both an honor and a call to action. Reflecting on her tenure as Treasurer, she highlighted the union's accomplishments, particularly in advancing workers' welfare amid a complex political landscape.

She noted that SSANU, UNIZIK, had achieved remarkable recognition as a leading university-based union, ranking highest on the university's visibility index.

In her acceptance speech, she pledged to uphold transparency, democratic engagement, and the welfare of all union members.

"I stand before you today filled with gratitude and deep humility as I accept the mandate you have given me to continue leading our great union. This trust and responsibility are not taken lightly. I pledge to build upon our achievements and usher our union into an era of lasting peace and progress," she stated.

FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES AT UNIZIK HOSTS ANNUAL LECTURES COMPENDIUM, BOOK LAUNCH, AND AWARD PRESENTATION

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, recently held its Annual Lectures Compendium, Book Launch, and Award Presentation on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at the ASUU Secretariat on campus.

The event featured Special Adviser to the Acting Vice Chancellor on general duties, Prof. AU Nnoyelu serving as a representative of the Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu FAMeds, FNAMed. He extended warm greetings to the chief launcher, Chief Engr. (Dr.) Prince Arthur Eze, Eze N’Ukpo; the Mother of the Day, Prof. Sylvia Chika Ifemeje, Anambra State Commissioner of Justice/Attorney General; and the Royal Father of the Day, HRH Oruche Nnamdi Ugodinobi, Okeife II of Ozubulu.

He also commended the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and his Management Team for the initiative to codify the Faculty’s annual lectures into a book. The Faculty Annual Lectures series addresses academically significant topics, and the creation of this compendium enhances accessibility for scholarship.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Chinedu Oguejiofo Okoye, reflected on the faculty's inception in 2021 and recognized the pioneering lecturers who laid its foundation. He highlighted that the Faculty Annual Lectures series was initiated during Prof. J I’s administration and has fostered collaborations with various bodies, establishing a tradition of organizing annual lectures featuring diverse speakers—a significant milestone for the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

The book, titled “Contemporary Issues in Environmental Sciences: A Compendium of the FES Annual Lecture Series 2006 to 2024,” was reviewed by Prof. Emeka Ezeonu, a Professor of Environmental Biochemistry and Toxicology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

He noted that this compilation encompasses the Faculty's annual lectures delivered over nearly two decades (2006-2024). The 250-page volume, edited by Ejikeme JO, Toluwani D, and Egbuna OK, addresses a broad array of contemporary environmental science issues, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, sustainable development, and emerging technologies. Authored by distinguished scholars and leading environmentalists in Nigeria, the book represents a premier collection of works in its field.

The event not only showcased compelling academic discussions but also included the presentation of the book and awards to esteemed personalities and supporters of the Faculty. Among the notable award recipients were Chief Engr. Arthur Eze, Prof. Mrs. Sylvia Ifemeze, and HRH Igwe Oruche Nnamdi Ugodinobi.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Refutes Contract Scandal Allegations, Denounces Sahara Reporters Publication

Nnamdi Azikiwe University has firmly denied allegations of a contract scandal, dismissing claims made in a March 2, 2025, publication by Sahara Reporters that accused the institution of awarding the same project to two companies without revoking the initial contract.

According to the Sahara Reporters article, the university allegedly awarded a perimeter fencing contract to Abdullah Hawawo Construction Co. Ltd in 2024 for ₦180,031,437.50, and then again to Duonni Nigeria Limited in February 2025 for ₦370,738,365.05 — without terminating the earlier contract.

In response, the university released a statement titled “Debunking the Lies and Exposing the Treacherous Scheming of Contract Touts and the Shenanigans of Detractors”, signed by Mr. Njelita Louis O., the Acting Head of Information, Public Relations, and Protocol. The statement condemned the publication as false and malicious, accusing both Sahara Reporters and Abdullah Hawawo Construction Co. Ltd of orchestrating a deliberate attempt to damage the university’s reputation.

The university categorically denied the claims made in the publication titled “Nigerian University UNIZIK Caught in Contract Scandal as Acting VC Awards Same Project Twice, Second Over Double Initial”, clarifying that no contract was ever awarded to Abdullahi Hawawo Construction Co. Ltd for the remodelling and construction of the Southern Boundary (Frontage Perimeter Fence, Lot 1).

Nnamdi Azikiwe University reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, emphasizing that the accusations are baseless and aimed at undermining the institution’s leadership and progress.

SPEECH BY THE PRO-CHANCELLOR AND CHAIRMAN OF THE GOVERNING COUNCIL OF NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA, BARRISTER OLUGBENGA KUKOYI DURING HIS MAIDEN MEETING WITH THE SENATE OF THE UNIVERSITY IN AWKA ON THE 26TH OF FEBRUARY, 2025.

Protocols

It is with a great sense of honour and privilege that I address the Senate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 11th Governing Council of this great university. No doubt, this is an assemblage of distinguished academics and erudite scholars.


2. Whilst it is true that the Council is made up of seasoned professionals and technocrats drawn from different fields of human endeavour, we would not pretend to know your terrain more or better than you do. Some of you went to school here and live and work here. Others came with rich and varied experiences from other places and have been around for a while. Thus, you have firsthand experience and insider information that we may not have.

3. The Governing Council, under my leadership, will continue to work with the representatives of the Senate and other stakeholders to get the input of every critical segment of the university community in all we do.

4. We shall continually engage with the different stakeholders in the spirit of collective bargaining and in the overall interest of members of staff and students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University as well as the host communities.


5. But in doing this, we will not sacrifice fairness, equity, justice, merit, competence, and above all, the Rule of Law, on the altar of some primordial considerations or sentiments. This is the way to go because these were the principles that the “Great Zik of Africa”, the man after whom this great university is named, was known for. And these are the principles that the Visitor to this great university, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, holds dear.


6. It is worthy to note that this great university was founded to inculcate and disseminate knowledge without let or hindrance to all Nigerians based on the principles of “discipline, self-reliance and excellence”.


7. However, in recent times, the university has been in the news for not-so-ennobling reasons. Working with the entire university community, the Governing Council will endeavour to make a clean break with the past, instil discipline and change the narrative.

8. Knowing the strategic importance of collaboration and partnership, we shall seek to foster a strong partnership between the university and private sector as well as relevant public institutions towards addressing the infrastructural challenges in the University while promoting a culture of maintenance and continuous improvement of the existing facilities. Towards this end, all existing and pending partnerships will be reviewed and/or pursued to ensure their realisation while we seek new ones.


9. In our efforts to promote excellence, we must work together to advance the University’s research output, non-academic reputation and impact of notable alumni to improve our rankings in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. We can do this by rejigging our courses and programmes and tailoring them to the needs of the labour market and the realities of our world, where there is tremendous progress in various fields, from technology and medicine to space exploration, among others.


10. We shall do our very best within available resources to ensure that members of staff and indeed the entire university community, from Awka to Nnewi, Ifite-Ogwari to Agulu and Oko-Afia know the period of this Governing Council for good – in the overall best interest of the university and our nation.


11. As a first step towards promoting a strong feedback mechanism, the Governing Council shall have a suggestion box on all the campuses and premises where members of the university community can easily offer suggestions and air their views on any issue without fear of molestation or harassment from any quarters. The Acting Registrar and Secretary of the Council shall also make available the telephone numbers and email addresses of all Council members through the various channels of information dissemination in the university. We assure you of utmost confidentiality in the treatment of such feedback.

12. Distinguished members of the Senate, in the discharge of our responsibility for the good management, growth and development of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, we shall strive to do things differently and try as much as possible to carry along all the critical stakeholders in an atmosphere of mutual respect, trust and service. We shall run an open-door policy and be receptive to new ideas, suggestions and constructive criticisms.

13. In light of the foregoing, we crave the support and solidarity of all as we go along as partners in the journey for a better Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Let us at once decide to come together and change the narrative. Let us bid farewell to the days when the university was in the news for the wrong reasons. And let us embrace the present and future with Renewed Hope for academic excellence, research breakthroughs and other ennobling attainments worthy of a university of this stature and standing.

14. There is still enough space at the top where Nnamdi Azikiwe University rightly belongs. But, to get and remain there, we need the cooperation of each and every one of you because it is the sum total of our individual and collective efforts in our various units, departments, directorates, faculties or unions that will make a complete whole.

15. Let us resolve to be the agents of the good and positive change or transformation that we desire. Let us brighten that corner where we are. We can do it. And we must do it. If not for our sake, then for the sake of those coming after us. Let it be said that when we were here, we did our very best for the advancement of knowledge, research and development of this great university that is rightly named after the “Great Zik of Africa” – the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka!

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, announces the appointment of Barrister Monsur Olugbenga Kukoyi as the new Pro-Chancellor, following the dissolution of the Council led by Greg Mbadiwe.

The appointment was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the university’s governance and academic excellence.

Before assuming his new role, Barrister Kukoyi served as a member of the Governing Council at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is a distinguished legal practitioner, trained in the United Kingdom, and a seasoned entrepreneur and philanthropist. He hails from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, in South West Nigeria.

Barrister Kukoyi has officially resumed duties at UNIZIK, engaging with stakeholders and initiating strategic discussions aimed at advancing the university’s growth and reputation.
