InvestmentRe: Visa, Mastercard, Paypal And Uber Back Facebook's Coin With $10 Million by doyinmolah(op): 8:07am On Jun 14, 2019
Big companies like Visa and PayPal are reportedly willing to pay millions for the privilege of running a node on the Facebook cryptocurrency network.
Facebook’s foray into crypto has been met with mixed reaction. Some are hailing it as the next step in a global financial revolution, while others have expressed concerns over the company’s shady past record when it comes to security, privacy and data abuses.
Nevertheless, U.S. tech and finance giants clearly want a slice of the Facebook crypto pie. According to the Wall Street Journal, a number of financial and e-commerce companies, venture capitalists and telecommunications corporations have already pledged to back the new project.

Big Names Want In On ‘GlobalCoin’

The report added that over a dozen firms, which include Mastercard Inc, Visa Inc, PayPal Holdings Inc, Stripe Inc, Booking.com, and Uber Technologies Inc, have formed a consortium and agreed to pledge $10 million each to secure governance over the new crypto coin.
It was reported last month that the social media giant was recruiting backers and aimed to raise $1 billion for the crypto project.
Fearing Bitcoin, VISA and Mastercard Reclassify Crypto Purchases as 'Cash Advances'

The currency dubbed ‘Libra’ or ‘Global Coin’ is expected to be officially announced next week. The stablecoin will be pegged to a basket of government-issued currencies — similar to the IMF’s SDR (special drawing rights) basket of fiat currencies — to avoid the volatility of cryptocurrencies.
The report was not very complimentary of bitcoin stating,
It has been a decade since bitcoin was born, yet consumers hardly use it—or the hundreds of other cryptocurrencies—to pay for things. Facebook is betting it can change that with a crypto-based payments system built around its giant social network and its billions of users.
The usual regulatory concerns have been raised as governments get anxious about the potential for money laundering. According to the WSJ, Facebook won’t exactly control the new coin, neither will the individual members of the consortium, which is known as the Libra Association.

Citing people familiar with the situation, it added that some could serve as nodes for blockchain transaction validation.
Facebook is still the direct developer of the greatly guarded technology so its influence over the coin is likely to be as strong as it has over the data on the social media platform. Just like Google, Facebook has a highly secretive algorithm that determines what users can and cannot see in its news feed.

‘Facebook Coin’ Will Boost Bitcoin

Co-founder and partner at Morgan Creek Digital Anthony ‘Pomp’ Pompliano said that the move was especially bullish for Bitcoin adoption considering two of the backers are Visa and Mastercard.
Facebook has secured Visa and MasterCard as two of the backers for their new cryptocurrency.
Very positive signs for future adoption of Bitcoin
— Pomp (@APompliano) June 13, 2019

Participating in the Libra project allows companies like PayPal, Visa, and Mastercard to exert some level of control over the new ‘cryptocurrency’ and its centralized governance. This makes the new coin unlike Bitcoin that’s an open-access cryptocurrency allowing anyone to download the software and run a node.
Therefore, ‘Facebook Coin’ is unlike to pose any real threat to the future of decentralized peer-to-peer finance.
InvestmentVisa, Mastercard, Paypal And Uber Back Facebook's Coin With $10 Million by doyinmolah(op): 8:03am On Jun 14, 2019
Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and Uber are all backing Facebook’s new cryptocurrency, according to a new report.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the social media giant has signed on more than a dozen backers for its GlobalCoin cryptocurrency, a stablecoin that has been developed in secrecy for more than six months. Each of the new backers will invest roughly $10 million in the project as part of a governing consortium for the cryptocurrency.
Stripe, Booking.com and MercadoLibre are part of the project, according to the Journal, though the report does not specify what their roles are.
Facebook announced it was launching GlobalCoin last December, though the company indicated that it was looking at cryptocurrency as far back as the end of 2017. The crypto is expected to be a stablecoin that will operate within the company’s messaging infrastructure – WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger.

However, Facebook has been tight-lipped about what exactly GlobalCoin will be used for, though the BBC suggested that Facebook may look to retailers, allowing its users to purchase discounted goods using the cryptocurrency. The cryptocurrency would be used to transfer value directly from Facebook to the retailer, cutting out credit card companies in the middle, which BBC suggests would help the retailers’ profits.

GlobalCoin is now expected to be unveiled on June 18.

RomanceIs Abortion As Dangerous As It Is Portrayed To Be? by doyinmolah(op): 2:08pm On Dec 29, 2016
Is abortion as dangerous as it is portrayed to be?

Over the years 'abortion' has been portrayed to be very dangerous to a woman's health, and with the help of films and television shows, this view has garnered popular support.

Hence the question, is abortion as dangerous as it is portrayed?

It is important to note first of all that films and television shows tend to present a skewed portrayal of abortion—when fictional movies and TV shows include a plotline about abortion, the tale typically paints the procedure as riskier than it is in real life. Analyzing 385 abortion-related plotlines from 1916 to now, it was found that while medical procedures like CPR are often shown as safer and more effective than the reality, stories of abortion are way more likely to end in the death of the patient than they are in real life. The obvious problem this report points to is that these fictional narratives don’t happen in a vacuum. These stories have real implications on the way people perceive women seeking abortions and their health care providers—especially in an era when conservative politicians argue that abortions are unsafe in order to justify laws that restrict abortion access.

Secondly, Medical abortions performed in the first 9 weeks of pregnancy have a very low risk of complications. This risk is the same as when a woman has a natural miscarriage. These problems can easily be treated by a doctor.
Out of every 100 women that do medical abortions, 2 or 3 women have to go to a doctor, first aid center, or hospital to receive further medical care. In countries where childbirth is safe, 1 in every 10.000 women dies during childbirth. Less than 1 in every 100,000 women who use a medical abortion die, making medical abortions safer than childbirth and about as safe as naturally occurring miscarriages. This means that a safe abortion with Mifepristone and Misoprostol is always lifesaving. Taking these pills is known as medical — as opposed to surgical — abortion. Despite their safety and efficacy, mifepristone and misoprostol are tightly regulated and, in many places, are difficult to get. The pills are legal in the U.S.; taking them without a prescription is not.

Lastly, The Abortion Surveillance Branch of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) maintains that induced abortion is safer than childbirth and that the serious complication rate is less than one percent.

Disclaimer: The writer is not trying to state that 'abortion' is not dangerous, but is it as dangerous as it has been portrayed to be? Let's therefore set aside our religious views for once and answer this question scientifically

PoliticsOpen Letter To Governor Ayodele Fayose by doyinmolah(op): 8:05am On Sep 18, 2016
THE FOUNTAIN IS GETTING DRIED: The Continuous Falling Standard of Education in Ekiti State, Why We Must Not Keep Quiet.*

His Excellency,

It is with great delight that I am writing this letter to you as a good indigene of Ekiti who wants a great future for the good people of Ekiti State. I hope you will not see this letter as a politically motivated letter or one written to discredit your administration.

I am not a politician and I do not have any affiliation with any political party. I am a social entrepreneur with focus on education. I believe education is the greatest gift one can give a child because it is the most powerful tool to change the world.

Ekiti State is considered as the academic capital and knowledge power house of Nigeria. And it is not just because we have the highest numbers of professors in the country but because these professors have gone as far as the global stage to make Nigeria and Africa as a whole proud. Our professors have made laudable contributions in almost every field of endeavors.

Ekiti produced the First Professor of Mathematics in Nigeria, as you already know, sir -- the person of Prof. Adegoke Olubunmo, and the first professor of Architecture in West Africa, the person of Prof. Adeyinka Adeyemi. Peter Bodunrin was the second professor of Philosophy in the whole of Africa, as you know, sir. Benjami Osuntokun is also one of the first professor in the field of Neurology while his brother Akinjide Osuntokun is another reputable professor of Yoruba. Prof. Niyi Osundare is as well a notable person in the literary world and Bolaji Aluko, Sam Aluko, Olanipekun Esan, Dipo Kolawole, A.A. Agboola, Jacob Ade-Ajayi, are only a few among the great professors Ekiti has produced. If there is anything that Ekiti is known for all over the world, it is our intellectual heritage.

In Ekiti, I have believed there are only two alternatives -- it is either a child goes to school or he goes to the farm. Our people are wise and that is why they chose to go to school instead of focusing only on farming. The dividends is what we are reaping today.

Nothing delights an average Ekiti parent than to see his or her child wear the academic gown and achieve excellence within and outside the walls of the academic environment. Ekiti people cherish education so much and that is why a town like Okemesi-Ekiti can boast of over 30 professors. It is also the reason that it is said that Ekiti State is the only State in Nigeria that has at least a lecturer in every university in the country.

When Ekiti State was carved out of Ondo State in October 1,1996, the then head of state, General Sani Abacha was so proud of Ekiti people's achievements in the academic fields and our contributions to the development of the country that he voluntarily agreed that our motto should be *“Fountain of Knowledge”*. This motto was earned by sweat and hard work of great Ekiti indigenes who made sure they achieved success in their fields.

The sincere question we need to ask today is this: *“Is the fountain not getting dried?”* In my own view, the fountain of knowledge is getting dried and our future as a people is at stake. One of the biggest tragedy that can happen to us as a people is to fall short of the great legacy left behind by the great academic giants of Ekiti State who labored so much to put Ekiti State on the world map as a result of their intellectual prowess.

We are gradually losing the race of academic excellence. In the time past, our students participated in national and international competitions and came home with medals. Ekiti State University is the first and only State owned University to be named as the best University in the country. In the time past, Ekiti State was considered Centre of Academic Excellence. But the story is changing gradually.

The continuous fall in standard of education in recent times is not just a threat to the academic heritage but also a threat to the future of the state. The recent performance of Ekiti State in WAEC and JAMB shows that we are gradually losing our position as fountain of knowledge. Education is becoming a luxury in the state as majority of the public secondary schools in the state now produce students who can neither read nor write proficiently and parents who can afford private schools see the private schools as a better alternative.

In the last two years, Ekiti State was placed respectively on the 12th and 11th position among Nigeria states in WAEC exam performance.

As the governor of the state, it is you who will protect the future of every child by providing quality and affordable education. While I commend your administration and past administrations for your efforts in restoring the lost glory, I will implore you to do even more if we are ever going to maintain our pride as the country’s fountain of knowledge.

Ekiti State as at today is littered with dilapidated buildings as schools. I did not get pictures on the Internet. I always come home and I do come across some schools so much that the first thing that comes to my mind is about how the students could be learning in such a horrible environment.

Many schools in Ekiti State cannot boast of a standard laboratory not to talk of an ICT Centre. The world is changing and we must be ready to change too. We cannot produce 21st century students when we are still using the 19th century methods of teaching and learning.

Why I will not blame you for the present situations of things in Ekiti State as regard the standard of education, I will encourage you to make education one of your priorities. The prosperous countries in recent times are not countries that rely on agriculture as the major source of revenue, as we can see; but they are country that are investing in ICT to transform their education sector so as to produce citizens that can solve problems by leveraging on the power of the ICT. The success story of Dubai and the UAE as a whole is what we can learn from.

Although the past administrations contributed to the problem on ground especially the administration of Governor Fayemi. The Hundreds of Millions of Naira he used to purchased personal computers for individual students should have been used to build ICT centres for all secondary schools in the state as done by the Federal Government in all Unity Schools across the country. I believe this would have been more effective and contribute positively to the progress of the education sector.

The year the ex-govenor distributed the laptops, our students’ performance dropped virtually in all exams because the project was a misplaced priority. In my own view, the motive of the project was to misappropriate public fund rather than the said reasons. What is the purpose of distributing laptops in a state where no single school can boast of a standard library, in a state that students are learning under dilapidated buildings, a state where teachers are still using blackboard and chalk, and a state that cannot meet up with UNESCO standards of quality education.

We have expensive private secondary schools in the state that their students are not using laptop not to talk of students in the public secondary schools that still find it difficult to read paper materials and were given laptops to read digital materials. The students saw the computers as Father Christmas gifts from Governor Fayemi and we thank God he retrieved them soon enough when he saw the way they were misused by both students and teachers. Progress in any endeavor is a marathon race and not a dash race. The mind needs to be empowered first before the hands are empowered, if there will be progressive change.

I keep asking myself where the retrieved laptops were kept as we didn’t hear anything from Governor Fayemi about them before he left office.

You may have reasons to continue to blame the past administration for the present situation but it surely will not change anything. Our major concern now should be what can be done to rescue our education sector from the sorry situation it is presently in. Something must be done as soon as possible. Government-Private Partnership Initiative should be launched in order to come up with lasting solutions.

From my personal research the followings are the problems facing Ekiti State Education Sector and I will also suggest what can be done to solve the problems:

*Lack of Motivation for teachers:* I heard your government is owing teachers more than six months salaries and this has continued to lead to strike upon strike in the state. While I know the country is presently in recession, I believe you can still do better than owing them this much. The incessant strike is really affecting the students’ performance as they are not well taught by their teachers and sometimes are being rushed as the teachers try to cover all the syllabus despite all the time wasted during the strike.

*Inconducive Learning Environment:* Creating a conducive learning environment is as important as learning itself. There is need to improve the learning environment across the state. Improved classroom environment will certainly produce positive results. A lot of schools are in need of urgent renovations.

*Insufficient Learning Facilities:* A lot of schools in the state cannot boast of a standard library, a science laboratory, an ICT centre and so forth. Providing these facilities will not only aid students’ success in various examinations, it will also provide a platform where they can learn more and develop themselves beyond what is taught in the classrooms.

*Inconsistent Trainings For Teachers:* There is need to continue to empower teachers with information and teachings tools through intensive trainings. There is need to train teachers on the use of digital and technological teaching tools so as to improve their productivity.

While there are a lot of problems facing the education sector, I believe addressing the following four first will lead to a new dawn of progress in Ekiti State and upholding of the intellectual heritage we are known for. By all means we must not allow the Fountain of Knowledge to get dried. Ekiti State shall rise again and we will never cease from being a land of honour.

*Yours faithfully,*

*Vincent Adeoba,*
*A Concerned Ekiti State Indigene.*

BusinessThe Exchange Rate Of Naira To $1 Is Now 391 Naira. A Curse Or Blessing by doyinmolah(op): 12:47pm On Feb 21, 2016
In what is increasingly clearer, a cocktail of bad choices, incoherent policies made worse by instability in the markets, as well as a fastidious clinging to antiquated ideas, the fate of the Naira hang in the balance as it continues its downward slide.

The Nigerian Naira continued to fall in value against the American Dollar on February 17th 2016. Naira now sells at 391 Naira per Dollar at the black market.

Meanwhile, the currency remained stable at the formal interbank foreign exchange market as the exchange rate is #199.34.
The currency has also depreciated against the British Pound to #505 per Pound on the black market.

The C.B.N had however intervened with supplies of the foreign currencies on Thursday at the interbank market where banks buy foreign currencies at the official rate of #199/$1.00.

Unfortunately, market dealers lamented that the volume supplied was too small to meet the demands presented by the banks on behalf of their customers.

According to Sunday Vanguard the development prompted frenzied recourse to the parallel market by some dealers and their customers, crashing the fragile Naira further.
According to Saturday Punch, this current trend has made parents who have children schooling abroad to take their frustration to banks, with some of them weeping openly.
Furthermore, the Yoruba Unity Forum has also warned the president that if the falling rate of the currency is not checked urgently, millions of Nigerians are likely to lose their jobs.
This unfavorable situation has made so many people to advocate for the devaluation of Naira.
Albeit all these negative impacts of the scarcity of Dollars, The Punch reported some positive impacts stating that the scarcity of dollars in the country has left traders and it no option than to be thronging some commercial cities in the country to buy goods in order to remain in business.

Some of the traders, who are majorly importers of textiles and other materials, resorted to thronging Aba, Onitsha, Lagos and Kano markets.

Thus positive impact will help revamp the manufacturing sector, create more jobs, make Nigerians to patronize Nigerian made products and ultimately improve the economy which is what most Nigerians want.
GOD BLESS NIGERIA
