Thanks for the research .... who to blame? These two paragraphs sums up everything! They knew it was risky ...but .... was worth taking. I guess they will rebuild ... maybe with a breakaway for when it happens again. There is really a need for that bridge ... I believe it's worth the risk.

No doubt... seems it didn't matter if the soil was sand ... clay or rock ... neither did the magnitude of the building .... as long as the materials were not substandard. No surprise the building collapsed.

By the same logic ...doing all the necessary tests ... this case is different. Bear in mind ... this was more than a landslide ..it was like a mini earthquake with mountain shifting. What test should they have possibly done to avoid this? Besides getting the soil etc...I would fault them if the bridge was built at a point where there was a history of landslides ... in which case the location would've been a bad one regardless of soil. Nature is unpredictable.... there is nothing we can do to avoid it nor prevent damages.

The bridge itself didn’t collapse because of weak materials. What failed was the mountain slope beside it. Many landslides in the area begin deep underground with no surface cracks or visible warning signs, so they’re extremely hard to detect beforehand.

Why build there at all?
Because that route is one of the only possible pathways linking central China to the Tibetan plateau. The terrain is so rugged that engineers often have no alternative but to build bridges, roads, and tunnels through risky areas. The choice is usually between building there — or having no connection at all.

Who is to blame?

If the early surveys showed danger and it was ignored → engineers or planners are at fault.

If the slope appeared stable and showed no warning signs → it’s more of a natural event that exceeded human prediction.


Based on what is known so far, it looks more like an unexpected deep-slope collapse rather than a straightforward engineering error. The final investigation will determine whether there was any negligence.
