Konquest: True that.
Indeed, when the Nigerian-American, Dr. Julius Oni left his job at the Johns Hopkin University as a musculo-skeletal specialist in the United States and moved back to Nigeria a few months ago in 2024 after 25 years of living in the U.S., some posters online said he was "mad" for doing so. But this is a self-aware guy who already has real estate investments in Nigeria and took that conscious decision to move over to Nigeria with the full support of his wife to start his own specialist medical facility after selling his house in the United States. He still maintains professional ties with Johns Hopkin though.
I follow the brilliant Julius Oni (who is originally a native of Ile-Oluji in Ondo State and still in his 40s) on Instagram and the original video he posted on IG including subsequent videos went absolutely viral. Since then, he has had a lot of media engagements from media outlets who interviewed him and that gave him massive publicity and clients.
I was on a YouTube channel of one of the top media brands with over 1 million subscribers and another U.S.-based doctor of Nigerian descent posted a comment on the channel stating that he has been inspired by Dr. Julius Oni's "Reverse Japa" story and he too was already planning to give back to Nigeria by setting up a specialist medical facility in Nigeria. That's the power of putting yourself out there and telling a POWERFUL story that would be of benefit for all. Very well said👏👏 |

femi4: Just do you. No village people anywhere. Away with this naija mentality. Oyinbo will do preggy trimester till she put to bed on social media n nothing will happen People fail to understand that there are benefits and risks in every single thing that we do. Posting one's achievements on social media has some benefits as well as risks. Does the benefit outweigh the risks? What exactly are these risks? Are they actual risks based on cold facts or are they just Nollywood inspired? |

luminouz: Lmaooo .what else you think I post, my bedmatic skills? Scholastic achievements of course. But I learned early enough NEVER to do it again. Stay hidden and grow..that's my motto. That's strange. How exactly does one hide their scholastic achievements? They are there for you to announce it to the skies. What's the point of getting all that education if noone knows about it? Hold on, can you carefully tell me what you think scholastic achievements mean? What did you study in school and what degrees, if any, have you obtained? |

Nairaland General › Re: Posting Your Achievements On Social Media, Yay Or Nay? by DrAda(f): 4:13pm On Dec 08, 2024 |
luminouz: It may work for you and that's fine but don't ever think evil people or village people don't monitor. That's a very wrong assumption.
Seeking online validation by posting my life has never worked for me. It's not in my nature and never worked out well. I excel better when I keep my mouth shut and my hands busy hustling. My star/moon or whatever zodiac attracts too much envy and jealousy from others and I can't keep looking over my shoulder. You seem fine though...good luck Also valid. Perhaps my star is different from yours because at this point, I have remote jobs that pay better than my current job, all because I 'overshare'. I really don't know what you all do in your social media space but mine is simply tailored to show off my skill set and scholastic achievements. |

Urghhh 👿 Please read my posts carefully to understand the message that I am trying to pass along. The only opinion or validation that I need or listen to is mine and mine alone. I post my achievements because I am very proud of it and even though it may make others mad or uncomfortable, I sincerely couldn't care less. **I just realized that it is you. Figures. I shouldn't have wasted my time replying |

pocohantas: Well said. I have turned down remote work public speaking all because I want to be private. The last one I turned down was less than 3 months ago. I saw the videos on TikTok/Instagram and looking at the ladies that spoke, I felt this pain knowing I could have been one of them. Though my reason for turning down the last one was valid, but can you imagine the benefit that would have come with speaking at that event?
Thanks for your motivation. I really need to look into this. Wow. I simply can't believe you turned that down. But not to worry, another opportunity will definitely come along and this time you will be mentally ready to grab it with both hands and feet. Remember to put yourself out there and actively engage in everything and anything that comes your way. These challenges or opportunities are there for a reason. To help you grow to be the best version of yourself. Well done |

pocohantas: I think Purple in particular has really bad friends and they come off as classists.
I have two friends that are heavy posters and one took to content creation. I followed the content creator one when she had less than 30 followers and I like/engage all her posts. I must drop comments hyping her. Why would I be angry my friend is winning? Her husband is the doting type. Always buying her this and that. If you no get mind, you fit put her picture for bottle when you see her husband's doings.
I also belong to a group of female remote workers. Some of us are active on TikTok and IG. Some are not. To be sincere, the active ones amongst us have gotten more perks than we that keep hiding behind our private Instagram pages. Sometimes I wish I can be like them. But someday...someday... Well said. I am a very private person but noticed that that lifestyle was literally doing nothing for me. I have since restrategized and my God, it has been amazing. Putting myself out there and forcing people to take notice of what I have done and can do has turned my life around and I am simply not going back. Never hide your light under a bushel because of outlandish concerns about what people might say or do. You are hurting noone but yourself. We should learn to change our mentality because the misfortunes we face may have nothing to do with the people around you. Learn to take charge of your life no matter what happens. Always remember that good and bad happens to us all, so why not live your life to the fullest whilst you still can. |

This life is quite complex.
A number of persons here reported getting negative feedbacks when they post their achievements online.
For me, it has been the absolute opposite. Anytime I post about my successes, more seem to roll in. Thinking back now, I strongly believe that's my primary motivation behind posting my successes online.
It helps me strive to do more and not be complacent but most importantly I attract important clients and stakeholders who are eager to partner with me based on my skill set |
Nairaland General › Re: Posting Your Achievements On Social Media, Yay Or Nay? by DrAda(f): 2:28pm On Dec 08, 2024*. Modified: 7:21pm On Dec 08, 2024 |
It depends. I guess when you get to a certain age, you will yearn to post your achievements for you and you alone and not for anyone else.
More so, why hide it? It literally makes no sense. On LinkedIn, people fabricate all sorts of stories to make it look like achievements. Without a solid portfolio aka CV which consists of nothing but your achievements, then you have to ask yourself if you are living or just existing.
All these is to essentially say that yes I support posting ones achievements for every damn person on the planet to witness. |
