DREDGING BUSINESS IS PROFITABLE
TIPS FOR DREDGING INVESTORS BEFORE ACQUIRING LAND FOR DREDGING OR MOBILIZING DREDGER TO SITE .

* Dredging is sweet and good business and remains a good investment, but must be done rightly.
* Land for dredging should be acquired with the assistant of a good consultant to guild well ; as it is said that localization of industry is ; good road, closeness to off takers and availability of sand in the Lake or Lagoon or contribute to the success of dredging net income.

* Dredgers are acquired according to sizes or report of the sand search of dredging area, as this will guide investor location and availability of sand in the dredging area, either the sand is shallow, far away or over dredged .

If site is virgin that means it is not dredged before and you can walk from the water front into the lake up to 50 meters or 100m into the lake or Lagoon , in this type of dredging location, u need just a mini chines dredger called PUSHER or KEKE , either manual or hydraulic (Jagaban)

This dredger can dredge perfectly on a verging site to dredged site with sand at just 2m to 5m dept and distance of between 50 meters to 150meters away from the shore around the circumference of the dredging site, here u don't need a big dredger, economically to maximize profit ( staff and gas) operations reduced

But
.* Over dredged site or non virgin site is a site already dredged for more than a year or two years by another investors , this type of site is costly to run because it requires a bigger dredger maybe a 12/12 or 14/ 14 or set of chines dredger which comprises of (master dredger,3 transporters and a pusher) . This is because the site is not virgin and the sand is far. Away from the site and requires a big dredger to pump through the lines or pipes or a Chinese transporters which will convey the sand to the shore and push out with pusher dredger , therefore making dredging process more costly because of the logistics .

However, u must able to identify your site to know which group it belongs either by a sand search or Manual diging of stick to know level of sand. This will guide you from the beginning for a good decision making on dredging equipment choice and mobilization to site.

NOTE MARKET PRICE OF DREDGERS TO HIRE OR PURCHASE

* A used manual pusher is between 8m and 10m to purchase

* A new manual operating pusher is #15m to purchase

* A new hydraulic Jagaban pusher is #25m to purchase

* A set of new Chinese transporter dredger consisting of master dredger ,3 transporters and a pusher is #150m with long ladder

WHY YOU MUST DO SAND SEARCH BEFORE YOU START DREDGING OR MOBILIZING EQUIPMENT TO SITE

A case study is a channelization and dredging project that took place in ibeju Lekki this year 2021 by a community.

when i was invited for the project , the first thing i suggested was, we carry out the seand search to enable us know the condition of the soil and depth of the sand, but they said know; that there is sand.

I decided not to take up the contract without conducting a sand search and the contract awarded to another contractor who moved in swam buggy to open up the land and put dredgers to start sweeping. and behold the mud depth is m,ore than 6m into the ground by which the boom of the swam buggy wend down without getting any trace of white sand.; what a wasted effort and money.

i was latter invited to conduct the sand search and advise best approach and equipment to get the results.

OUR PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND METHODOLOGY

Our projects are primarily concerned with carrying out an extensive geological investigation and sand search for the purpose of dredging of sharp sand materials with the area concerned having been identified by the client or representatives.

We embarked on the exercise with a drilling equipment consisting of a set of metal and plastic pipes, Echo Sounder (ECHO MAP) with accessories, pumping machine, pipe range, rotation clamp drilling rig and other drilling accessories including DGPS instrument mobilized to the site. A total of Six (6) boreholes were marked out, drilled for thorough investigation within a proposed sub-bottom dredging area to a depth of 15m from where soil samples at various depths were obtained. Positioning was carried out by GPS to enable precise relocations at a later date.

The entire project will be mapped, to give a bird’s eye view of the project and
enable assessment and planning for project execution to be carried out by the contractors.

LEARN FROM THESE FEW PAST PAINFUL CLIENT EXPERIENCE:
1. Some client paid for the Lagoon front to be used for dredging before doing the sand search and the result shows the Lagoon has been over dredged above 1000 kilometers ( financial operation which he can not continue with and break even)

These are just few samples of what we have experience from some clients costly mistakes before before we were invited to consult for them and advise they relocate to better sites after spending so much in the last mistakes, and some are there struggling and loosing in dredging because they did not do sand search at all or EIA nor have a good consultant to guild them right.

SAND SEARCH AND REPORT
When dredging for the purpose of land reclamation or stockpiling for construction, one thing is paramount and that thing is SAND. It is the quantity and quality of the sand available at the proposed dredging site that determines the success of the project to be carried out. The quantity of sand deposit and the cost of dredging out this sand to a discharge site is what translate to the amount of money you make. So why not determine and evaluate all this by firstly, carrying out a sand search?

Sand Search simply means exploring water bodies with the objective of locating areas with sand deposits in commercial quantity, to be exploited by dredging for land reclamation or stockpiling for the purpose of construction.

The importance of sand search in the dredging industry cannot be overemphasized. Sand search has been trivialized in Nigeria’s dredging industry and has resulted in some cases of failed projects due to faulty sand search reports among other factors. Entrepreneurs usually make the mistake of sidetracking professionals in their quest for cheap labour and end up with regrets and huge losses.

The need for an accurate sand search report before the acquisition of a reclaimable or stockpiling site is very important and is the first step towards carrying out any project in this business. Cases of people rushing to acquire and pay for sites is common, on assumption that sand to be mined is available almost everywhere in the water body. Non-availability of sand in such sites after payment have been made for land, have led to huge losses to such client especially when a non-refundable mobilization/demobilization fee of millions of naira had been paid to a dredging company.

When the proper approach should have been, to first ascertain the availability of sand within the periphery of the proposed dredging site, the quality of such material and the distance from the points of mining to the point of discharge. Such information determines to a large extent the cost of dredging.

Sand search can be carried out scientifically or manually. The scientific approach to conducting sand search surveys involves
• Bathymetric Mapping for depth information,
• Boring for sample collection and
• Accurate Positioning of proposed burrow pits for dredging from the right spot.
More sophisticated approach include the use of a sub-bottom profiling electronic survey equipment that gives water depth and accurate sub-bottom profile of survey lines and subsequently a 2 or 3 - dimensional model of the sub-bottom of the project area. Such equipment can acoustically ‘see’ as far as 1000m below the seabed and produce traces of the sub-bottom with precise discrimination between various soil types, layer by layer.

The manual approach includes drilling by water jet procedure, good results is however limited to shallow depths and also has the disadvantage of the geometry of drilling not adhered to by non-professionals who confuse a borehole with a burrow pit and therefore do not ascertain material spread but assumes the availability of sand if a borehole is successful. Volume calculations cannot be based on one point, which necessitates the drilling pattern to either be in a grid format covering the entire project area or in a burrow pit configuration using cylindrical figures. With the former approach, quantity can be calculated from sub-bottom contours while the latter approach allows volume computation by the cylindrical formula.


In conclusion therefore, a good sand search survey report must among other things provide information as to the quantity of sand available for exploitation based on mathematical formulas and not guesswork ; the quality of sand, usually determined by laboratory sieve analysis for particle size range of the samples ; a co-ordinated bathymetric map of the project area , not a sketch, depicting depths for smooth navigation of the dredger to the sand pit and as a base for determining changes in the sub-bottom topography after dredging ; the exact coordinates of the center point and radius of burrow pits; the distances of the burrow pits to the stockpiling site and a recommendation on the length of dredger ladder required for maximum mining of the deposit from the burrow pits. Professional Hydrographic Surveyors, their fees notwithstanding, should be used for this exercise as a way of avoiding losses, due to inaccurate data acquisition methods. Such post operational losses are by far greater than the Surveyors fees and the report remains an asset for the client. As earlier mentioned, sand search reports determine the success or failure in dredging business and must therefore, be professionally handled.
