Even more disturbing is how far the abuse has evolved. In many instances, as soon as a contract is awarded, a letter of completion is issued—before a single shovel hits the ground. This guarantees the release of the full contract sum long before any work is done. What follows is predictable: abandonment, half-completed projects, and disappearing contractors.

In a functioning democracy, procurement is a cornerstone of public accountability. The process is meant to ensure that public funds are spent judiciously, transparently, and in the best interest of the people. It requires a clear separation of duties—those who award contracts must not be the ones who execute, supervise, or audit them. But in Nigeria today, that line has been dangerously blurred, if not completely erased.

We are now witnessing a troubling trend: the same individuals who issue contracts also award them to themselves, execute them, supervise the execution, and perform oversight on the same work. This is a total collapse of checks and balances in public administration.

I recall visiting a governor who invited me to accompany him on an inspection of a road construction site. Before a cheering crowd, he lashed out at the Lebanese contractor.

“I want this road delivered by Easter! I want to celebrate Easter on this road!” he thundered.

“Ebano!” the people hailed.

“If you fail to deliver, I will terminate the contract, impound your equipment, and have you arrested!”

“Yes, sir,” the contractor replied, visibly shaken. The crowd roared in approval.

That night, I was invited to dinner at the governor’s residence. Seated at the same table was the very same contractor. Over the course of the evening, I learned the truth: the “contractor” was actually a member of the governor’s staff. The company executing the project belonged to the governor himself.

What does this mean for our country?

It means corruption has been institutionalized. When the contractor is also the regulator, there is no incentive for quality, transparency, or accountability. Projects are inflated to enrich insiders. Poor or non-existent work is certified as complete. Reports are manipulated, audits buried, and public funds vanish into private hands—with no consequence.

The evidence is everywhere: abandoned roads, phantom health centers, dry water systems, ghost schools, and overpriced supplies that never reach the people. Oversight institutions—ministries, procurement bureaus, audit offices, even legislative committees—are either compromised or sidelined.

I know a state where the governor secured a massive loan and generous grant to overhaul the water infrastructure. The only visible result? A grand building called Water House—a monument to failure. Not a single drop of water flows to the people.

I, too, have been a victim. As a senator, I nominated a constituency project to benefit my community. The supervising ministry awarded the contract to its cronies, issued letters of completion without execution, shared the funds—and the so-called contractors vanished.

This is not mere incompetence. It is a carefully orchestrated scheme. By concentrating the powers of procurement, implementation, and oversight in the hands of a few, a corrupt elite has hijacked governance itself.






A friend of mine once captured this phenomenon succinctly:

“Conflict of interest is no offence here. When the Security Officer is a vendor of anti-theft equipment—and he is the burglar at night—the recycling of equipment will never end.”

The consequences are devastating.

First, it erodes public trust. Citizens lose faith in government when they witness resources squandered with impunity. Second, it drives out genuine private sector players. Honest contractors are pushed aside by political insiders who rig the process. Third, it deepens poverty and inequality. When funds meant for schools, hospitals, roads, and clean water are diverted, it is the poor who suffer most.

If Nigeria is to escape this quagmire, we must return to the foundational principles of procurement: transparency, competition, and independent oversight. Procurement laws must not just exist—they must be enforced. Conflict of interest must be punished, not explained away. The civil service must be insulated from political interference. And civil society must refuse to stay silent. It must ask tough questions and demand real answers.

Democracy is not just about casting votes every four years. It is about how leaders manage public resources in between elections. When procurement becomes the playground of cronies and political fixers, democracy is hollowed out—and governance becomes little more than legalized looting.

Let us call this what it is: corruption at its most sophisticated. And let us act now—before it becomes irreversible.

Going beyond the misleading headline and actually reading this article, it becomes obvious that this piece of poor PR is about how current FG's policies are "a total reshaping of how Nigerians CONSUME, SURVIVE, and ADAPT." It is unfortunate because that's recipe for hardship and not prosperity.

On the contrary, government polies should be deliberate effort to reshape how Nigerians PRODUCE, INNOVATE, CONSUME and PROSPER. Nigerian economy operates on extractive institution and this is evident from the analysis of the post. Always extracting from the masses you’re meant to offer more and more social benefits.

In 2024, Tinubus economic reform were:

The question we need to ask ourselves is did any of these economic reform made any meaningful impact on the quality of life of an average Nigerian citizen?

We can keep deceiving ourself showing to the public macroeconomic stats and score cards of how much our foreign reserve has improved, but what stands as economic indicator impact are the feedbacks we get from common Nigerian streets in Lagos, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Abia , Porhacourt, Katsina, Benue, Markurdi , Rivers , Bayelsa , Kogi , etc.

None of Tinubus reformation was tailored to processing our raw materials to create employment for the teeming youth population. Chemical engineering graduates , industrial design graduates, bio chemistry graduates, political science graduates etc have no place to work as there are no critical value chains ; the system have turned all of them to bike riders , Uber and Keke Napeb drivers finish, and yet they are claiming to be reforming the economy.

Nigeria is still very much resource dependent and that has always been our major economic problem. When you package all your raw materials as a nation to other countries without granular refining in your country before exporting , you’re not only killing intellectual capitals but also undermining the interest of the masses.

The current economy system we operate only favours the few elites.

To those who don’t understand the point in this news: the USA established a policy of which the sole purpose is to discourage importation of goods. The practical way to implement this policy is to increase tariff on the imported goods.

The consequence is it makes those goods expensive to people living in the USA. Hence the people would begin to prefer cheaper versions of those items. The cheaper items are the localized goods - made in and by the USA.

It’s a way to promote and encourage local manufacturers in the USA.

Nigeria does the same when we placed a 25% tariff on USA imported goods . The implication : USA imported goods prices go up and becomes unaffordable. Reason you see many foreign products in Nigeria these days are so expensive- from Turkey wear to foreign shoes and bags and electronics.

In the hierarchy of statute and law, protocols are lesser in power than the grundnorm. The right that lady exercised is her constitutional right to Liberty and freedom.

If NYSC feels their member has offended any of the terms or regulations of their organisation, they should subject her to investigation and disciplinary proceedings accordingly.

To the stoopid Nigerians comparing Nigeria with other saner climes. I saw some really devastating comments under the news yesterday where Serbian PM was demanded by the opposition MPs to resign for causing the death of about 15 Serbians.

The news reported that a public facility poorly constructed had collapsed and had lead to the death of this 15 Serbians.

Consequently , the opposition party stormed the Serbian national senate using grenades of different colours to disrupt the activities of the senators.

And some dull heads started whining by insinuating and taunting Serbian nation undermining the patriotic act of the opposition and indirectly describing their reaction as an ill rather than an exercise of democratic rights.

And I angrily wrote my response in the form of comment stating how such Nigerians can be so dangerous to co exist with normal thinking Nigerians. And I stated in that response examples of cases where Nigerians in their thousands loose their lives as a result of public corruption.

And how the opposition parties in Nigeria would not show up to challenge these excesses.

I have come to realize that what keeps the country Nigeria backwards is not the government; it’s the active presence of these set of stoopid Nigerians we have in our mist.

And sadly enough, some of these stoopid Nigerians often claim they are educated and hold degrees in human and society related courses such as Sociology, Psychology, economics and more.

Yet they demonstrate behaviour wreaks of valueless systems in the society rather than showing behaviour that brings about innovation and positive change in the society.

Their stupidity emboldens and always encourages terrible and corrupt practices in the country. They are often notable for arguing along the line of ethnic conflict, religion conflict and materialistic interactions. This is because they are so empty internally. And unfortunately, we have more of their population than the normal Nigerians.

If what was reported from Lagos Nigeria had happened as usually in a saner clime like the US, even in some African countries, immediately relevant persons , entities , oppositions and organisations would have started calling out the relevant leaders directly responsible for the lost lives.

Their calling out is usually not the flimsy type. Is either they demand just like what happened in Serbia , that the PM should resign , or they demand something of value to not only remedy the current crisis but prevent such occurrence from happening to their citizens in the near future.

That’s what’s called a working system.

But what do we get in Nigeria. It’s one random social media individual that saw the situation and posted the horrible news to the knowledge of relevant authorities. And from the response of those authorities that were tagged , does it appear like these authorities have a clue as to what needs to be done to salvage the sad situation ?

The answer is a capital no.

All these sum up to the fact that Nigeria remains a shit hole and the country is not giving up that status anytime soon if these insane persons in Nigeria are not reducing drastically in their numbers.
