Goodmorning my fellow Nlers, pls a quick question, for those of us who are opportuned to get discount from hospitals, did you have to fill a form asking for the discount or was it just a verbal thing? And then your bill given as though there was no discount given.?

Discounts are usually given to international self pay patients. it's clearly written on the bills. They usually give a sort of criteria for benefiting from that discount usually may say if you pay at the first visit etc.

The itemized receipts and zero balance also have the fees and discounts given.

Hope this helps you.

So sorry about her predicament. This kind of situation is not what I would wish on my enemy.

That said, I wasn't here on birth tourism when I had my child. I actually lived and still live in the US. And note where I said that the insurance (mine and my husband) had to pay back the money Medicaid paid the doctors, hospital and for medication. If my insurance had refused the charges (my husband's insurance actually the charges for the air ambulance at first stating that they could have taken my son to San Joaquin Hospital instead of Valley Children's and only paid after the hospital and his pediatrician submitted letters on why they had to take him to VCH), we would have been stuck with the bills and made to pay back every penny.

Now, your friend is on birth tourism, baby has jaundice, probably due to ABO incompatibility (that was what mine had), and is seeking to use Medicaid. That is not fair and very wrong because medicaid was funded through the back of of working, tax paying citizens for other citizens and LPR who cannot afford insurance. The argument of the baby being a USC doesn't hold water. He is a USC but does he earn any money? Pay taxes? Contributed to Medicaid? Do his parents pay taxes? Remember when she got her visa, they asked her if she was financially capable, and she answered in the affirmative. We should always be prepared for cases like this.

Proving she paid her bills and Medicaid paid her son's bill during renewal, im pretty sure is probably gonna anger the VO and earn her a denial. Tell her to talk to the hospital and see if her bills can get discounted and if she can get on a payment plan. Or maybe reach out to charity organizations

Thanks MamaOO for that prompt response. I will relay it to her. maybe she should explore the option of charity organisations. I agree with you that it's unfair to get Medicare when one doesn't pay taxes here. it's like stealing from the system. Reaching out to charity organisations is the way to go. how do you suggest she goes about that.

on a lighter note, if she doesn't get any help, hmm. I have been calculating even the cost of air lifting the child alone you quoted, she will pay bill her whole life time and then transfer the bill to the child who will also transfer to her own child probably up to the 4th generation. The greatgrand child will be paying for the cost of giving birth to greatgrand ma in the US. God help us.

Yes. He is a citizen. We his parents are citizens as well. But being a citizen doesn’t automatically qualify you for Medicaid. You have to actually be eligible based on income. Medicaid is for low income earners and people living below poverty lines but live and earn money in the US. He is entitled to Medicaid because we (his parents live here), work and we get taxed, but he isn’t qualified based on his parents’ income being over the eligibility threshold and that’s despite the fact that for every monthly paycheck, the government deducts Medicaid taxes from our salary, which between me and my husband is around $800 a month. No jokes.

Being a US citizen doesn’t automatically qualify you for Medicaid. Note that I said the bills was eventually sorted out between Medicaid and our insurance companies. We were not qualified for Medicaid based on our income. Medicaid has an income threshold to qualify and once you’re over that threshold, you don’t qualify.

I guess the hospital enrolled him because his case was so critical (he had severe jaundice, that was life threatening) and he even had to be airlifted via an air ambulance to Valley Children’s. The bills were mounting (the bill for the air ambulance itself was $51,450 or so), they needed insurance for him pronto and I wasn’t there. They wouldn’t allow me ride in the air ambulance with him, so while they already airlifted him to Madera, I was still in the hospital trying to sort and sign my discharge papers, talk to social workers, go home and pack cos they told us to expect to be there for at least two weeks, shop for essentials and then drive two hours to Madera from where we live. I didn’t see him until about 10hours later and by the time I did, he had already been admitted, ragged, paperwork filled out and receiving treatment.

When you apply for Medicaid, they ask income based questions don’t they? That’s to know if you qualify. You as a mother, on birth tourism should not answer those income questions cos you don’t make income here neither do you pay taxes.

Let me even chip this in. Once the child grows up and probably wants to attend college here, they have to pay out of state tuition and in most cases, out of state tuition is even as expensive as international tuition. We all know how expensive international tuition is don’t we? You might ask why they have to pay out of state tuition when they’re US citizens?. It’s because they for them to qualify to in-state tuition, you must have been resident in that state for at least two years or more, depending on the state. The kids lived in Nigeria so they’re not resident in any state. Hence, the out of state tuition is needed. They will/might qualify for student loans though, and they will need to start paying that back as soon as they’re out of college.

And yes, the bill was in his name, the Medicaid was in his name as well. But when you fill out your paperwork, they demand for parents name and sometimes social security number. When they run your name, they can see you have insurance and that’s where they contact your insurance, since you’re his parents and you have insurance they expect you to put your child on your insurance and not on government assistance.

MamaOO..,

Thanks again for this detailed info. Pls my friend is right in your shoes. she is here for birth tourism and was delivered sometimes last week. baby was manage in NICU for about 4 days and bills started accumulating.

She went for the pediatricians visit this week and had to be moved as an emergency to another childrens hospital. appatently her child has life threatening jaundice. She is so confused amd devastated. I spoke to her now and she says that people advised that shegets Medicare for the child being a US citizen and that if she can prove that she paid all her own bills it will suffice for renewal of her VISA. Based on this write up I advised her against it. but yet again how on earth can she pay the bills?

so just in case she chooses to get Medicare what is the process?
If she chooses not to get Medicare can she be given significant discount since she is self pay.
Should she wait until she gets the bills first before applying for the Medicare just to know what she is dealing with first.

Poor girl. just wanted to have an American child. didn't bargain for this.

please this topic interests me as I am in the same condition and I know lots of people facing this too.
In my case, they refuse to read the meter, giving us estimated bills of 17k etc and even when we pay the money it's not reflected and the bills keep accumulating. we have complained and written lots of letters attaching all our receipts of payments all to no avail.
whenever they come around they cut the light despite our explanations. Apparently the disconnection team is not same as the billing team. it's quite discouraging.

I think this should be moved to front page so that people who have solutions to this misdemeanor can bring it up.

I know there is a consumer protection agency but I don't know if it is functional.

I really can't wait for competition in the power sector. PHCN would definitely go the way of NITEL.

please you will need to show them that you've got money in those accounts as they can't prove it by seeing just your card. you neèd recent statements of accounts of you ain't coming with cash. I remember someone either on this forum or elsewhere who was turned back because she had a card and no statements to show how much was in the account.

Hello All,

What if I ain't travelling with cash for childbirth? Can I just tell them at port of entry that my card is loaded? Do they check? Òr tell them my husband will be joining me?[/quote]

Dear All, Good day. I have been a silent guest on this forum for a very long while and it has helped me tremendously. I really want to give back a little from my experience so far.
I am currently in the US to have my baby and I would like to share my POE situation at the Houston POE which I arrived last week.
First and foremost I want to inform us all that the immigration officers are on this page and read it all the time. They specifically mentioned this page to me and asked me to inform the house that they are with us. Not to scare anyone as I presume they may even be amongst us giving some input and guidance to us. He laughed at the change I intent letter we talk about here. I had it handy based on what I read here but i didn't even need to show it to him especially since he had laughed about how silly he thinks it is. My saving grace was that I had applied for the visa for vacation when I wasn't pregnant and I mentioned when asked that I will use it for child birth in future if I get pregnant. He saw that in my record. pls note that i was specifically asked this question and sincerely i thank God i was otherwise i may not have volunteered the information myself. However the Immigration officer at the POE says some of us will say we were not asked and it doesn't really matter we should have declared from the onset.
Secondly please always say the truth. No matter the cost. When you lie it apears like you are unscrupulous and can't be trusted.
Thirdly, let's not be scared of saying we want to give birth in the US. Both the consular officer and the immigration guy told me it's very legal to give birth in the US of you can pick the bills. All that is required is that you demonstrate that you know the bills and can comfortably pick them.
Finally please always always pick your bills and have your itemised receipts and zero balance handy. it's really unfair for us to use the Medicaid or other health insurance in the US. The citizens are taxed heavily for these services and getting it is like stealing literally. pls let's not do that . Sometimes we can be cohersed and tempted to do that even by some hospitals and doctors but don't fall into that trap. And as the nice guy I may at the POE adviced pls don't sign anything while in Labour. you may not be cordinated enough to read through properly. God bless.

[b]To all doctors in the house: Since 1994 I have been suffering from malaria parasite; for 16yrs now, it has been my greatest problem and it is really killing. Anytime I go to the hospital, malaria parasite is always diagnosed and malaria drugs always prescribed but after taking those drugs my condition still remain the same, I still feel sick with malaria; body pain, muscle ache, body weakness etc. My concern is, why are those drugs not working for me, why should I be treated and barely a week later still be diagnosed with MP. I have taken all sorts of drugs prescribed by doctors but to no avail. The sickness from this malaria parasite is affecting my productivity at work, my studies, my everything. Please, doctors try and help me, save life.

sorry dear for the repeated ailment.you never stated if you had gone for a laboratory test for malaria parasite.I will advise you to visit your doctor and request for full investigations.just dont narrow yourself to malaria.it could be something else.just consult a doctor and if possible a physcician.good luck.
Travel / Re: My Terrible Experience With Dana Airlines. by drI: 5:44pm On Oct 28, 2009
Thanks a lot for your sympathy. They really need to improve their services.
The story didnt even end here.By the next day when i got to lagos airport to get another flight for my return,i succeeded in getting an arik flight for 12:30pm,and of course paid double the amount.Only for me to go to their station at the local airport and i was told to go to the mm2 wing if i wanted my refund[i would have expected they told me that when they called to cancel the flight ,when i enquired, the response was that i should have found out from the caller].On my way there,a friend of mine called me back saying that the arik flight had just made their final boarding announcement so i had to rush back.having paid #1500 for an airport taxi.
When i got back to ph,i tried calling them severally and was finally told that i had to come back to lagos to get my refund, when i tried explaining to them that i was going to be due back in december they rudely cut the phone on me.
Definitely,i will never fly dana again and advice everyone that cares to listen not to make reservations with them.maybe one can get their tickets right at the airport when one is sure the aircraft is on ground.but like i said earlier on,i can only deduce what their safety procedures would be from what i have experienced so far.I may be wrong but i stand to be corrected.
Thank you.
Travel / My Terrible Experience With Dana Airlines. by drI: 9:35pm On Oct 20, 2009
I am extremely pissed with dana airline.Me thinks they are the worst airline in nigeria especially in terms of logistics.though i dont know much about their safety standards.

I was going to Lagos for an interview from portharcourt, got my flight booked about 2weeks before the date and 2hrs 30mins before my departure from ph,i got a call from them telling me the flight had been rescheduled for the next day by 1:35pm,you can imagine the time for my interview was 10am.I had the option of an instant refund which i took and had to pay twice the amount for another flight with another airline.thank God i even got a flight or else i would have had to take a night bus and arrive lagos in 2days cos i learnt the road at ore is so bad people literally sleep there.

As though that was not enough,i got another call a night before my return to ph and was told that my flight had been cancelled and they were going to refund me my money.

Sincerely i had to console myself with the fact that maybe God just wanted to save me from death.cos i just cant imagine this kind of airline with such horrendous services adhering to good safety standards. That said,i still have to find time to read the terms and conditions of the ticket and heaven help them let me not find out they had breeched my rights cos i plan on making good money from them at the law court.

please be warned.let dana be your last resort and dont book befor time.they are not organised at all.

I think the best treatment is to find out what exactly she is nagging about.I dont think any one just nags for no reason. If the complaints get too much, then i think she is just not happy with your personality and is just probably putting up with you.i talk from experience.Once had a bf who i felt i could change. i just kept on nagging and nagging about everything.I almost lost my mind trying to change him.Unfortunately,i saw i couldnt change him and he was also getting frustratedwith my incessant complaints and we had to go our seperate ways.My sincere advice to everyone, dont get into a relationship with the bid to change the person.you would definitely turn into a nagging person.

Rosabelle,
I think foreign students get to choose where they are posted to.I learnt from my friends that they are given the option of either ph,abuja or lagos.i stand to be corrected though.
As per the procedure, you would be deployed to a state for the orientation camp which lasts about 3wks,then you would be sent anywhere in the state to do your primary assignment for the rest of the one year.everything can be arranged as per naija.if you have a place of primary assignment already, they wld write to nysc telling them that they needed you ,then you wld be posted there.
As i said earlier on, all these can be arranged depending on who you know.personally,i was initially posted to zamfara, then i redeployed to abuja by connection and then i got a place of primary assignment by connection too and was posted there by nysc.
If you can defer your BA until you are 30yrs, that would be good.cos methinks its just one wasted year.lol.
take care and good luck on whichever decision you make.

allycat,
Whilst i agree with you that we cannot compare government organisations with the private sector, its also important to take cognisance of the peculiarities of our noble profession. The government has a great role to play in the health care of its citizens because not every one would be able to afford proper medical care if left to.Theres the need for proper subsidisation of health care by the government. a large chunk of the budget should be allocated to health care. Sincerely we cant afford to make BUSINESS out of health care especially in nigeria.the result would be that proper health care would only be for the rich while the poor be left at the mercy of a conscienceless government.
This is my take.Anyone else has a say?

That aside, i wld patronise you to see what youve got in your report as i might need the information offered.Like i said earlier on,i wld love to do an mph or masters in health management being a medical doctor. I would like to know if one can get scholarships with the online programmes, if one can get a working visa to sweden and if yes, how easy it is to get a job there to manage the cost of living being mentioned and how much savings can sustain someone until he/she gets something doing.

Its a pity though but we ve got to realise that Nigerians are very tribalistic people.

my dear, please nursing jobs are not lucrative in naija oh. not at all.
Maybe abroad but not in naija at all.
I am a doctor in a private hospital and they pay nurses about 20k per month.
those in teaching hospitals get about 60k.
those in the other sectors like companies get a lot more.like i know a nurse in shell that earns about 600k.
uve got to know its not their main core business so they employ about 3% of nurses.

@Ben,im sorry i asked a question about the health insurance and how it works in yhe uk. Ive just read your comprehensive write up on it earlier on.
your suggestions make so much sense. The so called 5 star hospitals would only be like the typical government thing that wld phase out after some time out of lack of maintenance.
methinks the solution to our health problems is the involvement of the private sector in health insurance, however as it goes right now, i am not really sure if i would say thats a good solution.where i work for example, we have lots of insured patients who get health services according to their premiums.
its kind of frustrating cos the doctors are limited to the dictates of these health insurance companies even when we know it might not necesssarily be the best. sincerely,NHIS just seems to be the worst of them all.do you know that pple under NHIS cant see a specialist?terrible aint it?
