PoliticsVoter Registration Day 4: Inec Ddc Machines Stolen by DrKnow1(op): 10:07pm On Jan 19, 2011
Barely  four days into the registration of eligible voters across the country,  there are reports that some of the Direct Data Capture Machines used by the  Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the exercise have been stolen and taken to unknown places .
P.M.NEWS gathered that the machines were distributed to members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who work with the Commission as ad-hoc  registration officers.  But  yesterday, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hodewu Avoseh, raised an alarm on the floor of the House that the  machines were already being hijacked within the state.

@sky blue ^^^^^^
I will vote for Ribadu not for his achievements or any other thing but on one single act of his only - For not pocketing the $15million bribe offered him by Ibori. Not many Nigerians can do that. I see him as a honest man to trust. He took the money and deposited it in the Central Bank. He could only investigate and arrest people. The prosecution and outcome of such cases rest with the AGF and the Judiciary. By the way, do you know there was controversy over making Ribadu to be answerable to the AGF? That the the prosecution of high profile cases should be done by the AGF.

The head of the civil service of the federation, Oladapo Afolabi, has directed all federal permanent secretaries to set up a tracking system to monitor and document resumption and closing time of every civil servant.
Mr. Afolabi gave the directive in a circular issued on Thursday last week. He instructed the permanent secretaries in charge of various ministries and government agencies and departments to install clocking devices that will efficiently record the movement of civil servants.
He, however, said that ahead of the installation of a clocking device, all permanent secretaries should, henceforth, strictly enforce the resumption and closing time of 8.am and 4.00 pm respectively.
The directive follows complaints about the civil servants’ attitude to work by President Goodluck Jonathan when he swore-in three newly appointed permanent secretaries. President Jonathan expressed displeasure at the low level of commitment to duties by some federal civil servants and called for an immediate change in attitude.
Lingering tradition
Shortly before the former head of the civil service of the federation, Stephen Oronsaye, retired last year, he threatened severe disciplinary actions on truant civil servants after discovering that only one in every three civil servants report to work before 8a.m.
His threats led to a fiasco in the federal secretariat after so many civil servants, including ranking officers, were severally locked out of the offices for late coming.
“The two days I have directed that offices should be locked against latecomers was to see the extent of the problem and I am quite disappointed that not less than two-third of my staff come late to work,” Mr. Oronsaye had lamented.
Despite Mr. Oronsaye’s strict measures, officers of the federal civil service continued with their tradition of late coming and truancy in their duties. The late comers also included some senior officers like directors and deputy directors.
Although it is hoped with the introduction of technological devices in the monitoring of arrival and closing times will greatly improve the productivity of the officers, some civil servants NEXT spoke with feel, “it will end up like the rest.”
Some others who spoke to NEXT on conditions of anonymity pessimistically dismissed the project saying, “it won’t last.” Others complained the transport system does not aide punctuality.

PoliticsRe: Babangida Is The Leader Of The North - Atiku by DrKnow1(op): 12:40pm On Jan 12, 2011
Hail the new Ahmadu Bello of the North cheesy
PoliticsBabangida Is The Leader Of The North - Atiku by DrKnow1(op): 12:28pm On Jan 12, 2011
Minna — A presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, had said that former military president, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has now assumed the leadership of the north and filled the vacuum left by late Saduana Ahmadu Bello.
Meanwhile, Babaginda yesterday emerged a national delegate to the party's special national convention that holds tomorrow at the Eagle Square in Abuja.
IBB was a presidential aspirant before the Northern Political Leaders Forum picked Atiku Abubakar as its consensus candidate for the PDP primaries.
However, it appears that the Niger State state government has not given Atiku its backing as the deputy Governor Ahmed Ibeto did not outrightly endorse him for the primary poll.
Ibeto, who received Atiku at Government House, Minna, said that there was nothing he could say, but to wait on the elders of the state to know whether to declare support for the vice president or not.
Atiku who was speaking when he paid a courtesy call on the Governor of Niger State, said Babangida was the leader of leaders and general of generals.
According to him, IBB was a symbol of unity for the north from the struggle to put down the third term attempt by former President Olusegun Obasanjop to the present struggle to entrench good governance.
According to him, what is now called Northern Political Forum was formed by G3 led by IBB to G15 also led by IBB. and now the Norttern Political Forum also led by IBB.
He said his determination to defeat president Goodluck Jonathan was borne out of the desire to clear the nation of third term fever adding that Goodluck ambition is an extension of third term agenda.
According to the Deputy Governor "elders are the people we hold to high esteem not only to guide us but to show us direction in the nation's affairs".
He stated further "we have discussed with our elders his Excellency (Atiku) will see the result" while saying that "I am really in short of words".

Politics3,000 Rendered Homeless In New Bakassi As Fire Razes 300 Huts by DrKnow1(op): 11:47am On Jan 12, 2011
Calabar — Over 300 huts have been razed down and 3,000 persons rendered homeless as fire guts a fishing settlement in Afa Iso Mbiet in Day Spring II Island in the Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State.
In the inferno which started weekend, household property including clothes, electronics, beds, food, cash, fishing implements, outboard engines and boats were lost.
Vanguard gathered that what aggravated the damage was the harmattan wind that swept through the area spreading the fire to all the huts, thereby aborting all efforts by the villagers to halt the disaster.
At the scene, after the devastation, many of the displaced could be seen hurriedly putting up make_shift huts with wild palms to accommodate the people while majority have temporarily relocated to neighbouring fishing ports.
Victims, especially women and children were seen helplessly crouching around exposed to the inclement weather of the harmattan breeze with barely any cloth to cover themselves and no food or water to drink.
Also affected was a Government Primary School, 3 Churches and 3 provision stores.
While narrating what happened, the village head of Afa Iso Mbiet, Chief Effiong Iman whose palace was also burnt said that the fire started as a surprise and created panic amongst the populace who had no inkling of the source.
Mfon Effiong Okon, 31 who sustained a first degree burn said that the injury was as a result of his effort at stopping the fire.
Mrs. Emem Isong, 27 a pregnant shop owner, who deals on cloths pointing to where her shop once stood in tears said everything was burnt in the fire. She called on Government to come to their aid.
The Pastor of The Apostolic Church in the area, Elder Effiong Asuquo Akpan said that apart from the structure, the Church property worth thousands of Naira was lost.
Meantime the Director_General, Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Mr. Vincent Aquah, MON has described the sad incident as a heavy draw back to the economic lives of the victims as well as the State.
Mr. Vincent Aquah who was represented by the Programme Assessor in the Agency, Peggie Inyang said that it was a pathetic situation which needed urgent response.
