It is high time all security chiefs were sacked. Nigeria is becoming a banana republic. If police officers are slaughtered in this manner, what hope do we have as ordinary citizens? |

“For the avoidance of doubt, any person henceforth found on the streets, roads or pathways in this country continuing with the protests or marches shall be arrested and be charged to court immediately,” a statement said. Are we still under democratic rule? Since when did peaceful protests become a crime? |
LAGOS (AFP) – The Nigerian police warned on Monday that “illegal” protesters would be arrested and those calling for regime change would face treason charges after unions called off a week-old nationwide strike. “For the avoidance of doubt, any person henceforth found on the streets, roads or pathways in this country continuing with the protests or marches shall be arrested and be charged to court immediately,” a statement said. It also said “any person or group of persons calling for a regime change before the expiration of the mandate period of the current government is committing treason and will be so arrested and prosecuted no matter who she or he is.” Top rights activists and opposition politicians led massive rallies during the strike where some protesters suggested the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan step down over the January 1 removal of fuel subsidies that doubled pump prices. Nigeria’s unions on Monday called off the strike — which was launched on January 9 and brought tens of thousands into the streets — following Jonathan’s decision to reduce fuel prices by around 30 percent. As Jonathan made the announcement early Monday, soldiers deployed in key spots and occupied main protest sites. Authorities later fired tear gas, shot into the air and used armoured vehicles to disperse protesters. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/01/those-calling-for-regime-change-would-face-treason-charges-police/ |

Fear the police, not the soldiers. The first are a bunch of dumb asses and the latter are real professionals. With the police accidental discharge can happen at ant time! |

Why are they meeting again? I think they have accepted the FG offer of N97 |
Following Sunday night’s failure to reach an agreement with government over the fuel subsidy issue, labour is scheduled to meet at 1pm today to plan its next line of action even as it has signalled its intention to meet the Justice Alfa Belgore Committee on Wednesday. One major sticking point is government’s refusal to revert to the pre-subsidy removal price of N65 although in a nationwide broadcast Monday morning, President Goodluck Jonathan announced a new price of N97, which is lower than the N141 announced by government on January 1. FUEL SUBSIDY STRIKE DAY 6: LIVE UPDATES: LAGOS: 9.20AM…Residents of Lagos woke up this morning to a heavily security clamp down as armed soldiers were seen manning strategic points across the city. It is clear that the ever popular mass rally, which throughout last week took place at the Gani Fawehinmi Square, Ojota, may not hold as the area is swamped with security operatives including armed soldiers. However, the city is still deserted as commercial activity is virtually none existent with offices, banks and government institutions remaining shut. ABUJA: 9.47AM:…While there is not a very noticeable army presence in the federal capital, the city still remains a virtual ghost town with most shops and offices yet to open. Transcop Hilton, which used to be very busy before the strike action began last week, is still recording low patronage, ditto for Sheraton Hotel.
