HealthThe Act Of Masturbation Is More Common Than You Think! by Droleo1(op): 11:23am On Aug 20, 2017
Masturbation is the act of stimulating one's genitals to achieve sexual arousal and pleasure usually to the point of orgasm. The act of masturbation is very common, even among those with sexual partner.
It is usually the first sexual act experienced by most people and it is part of the growing child exploration of his body parts.
Masturbation can be self or mutual(between sexual partners) and is considered normal and a healthy part of sexual enjoyment in some cultures. However, some religions and cultures are against masturbation or even label it sinful and this can lead to guilt or shame about the act. Medically, masturbation is considered safe and normal. Most people usually deny the act of masturbation when confronted physically.
An online poll was conducted to ascertain the proportion of people who practice the act of masturbation. About 332 people participated in the poll and approximately 80% practice the act of masturbation while 20% don't. Out of the 80% who practice the act of masturbation, 53% are males while 27% are females and out of the 20% who don't masturbate 11% are females while 9% are males. In another independent research, about 95% of males and 89% of females reported they have masturbated.

HealthDo You Know Your Blood Pressure? by Droleo1(op): 9:45am On Aug 19, 2017
The blood pressure reading consists of two different parameters, the systolic blood pressure and the diastolic blood pressure. The top number is the systolic blood pressure while the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats while diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries while the heart rests. Blood pressure is usually measured in mm Hg.

A normal systolic blood pressure is less than 120 mm Hg and a systolic blood pressure of 140 mm Hg or more is considered to be high. A normal diastolic blood pressure is lower than 80 mm Hg and a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or more is high. Blood pressure is measured using a blood pressure monitor called sphygmomanometer and it can be checked at home.

Routine blood pressure check is very important. If your blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg(normal blood pressure), you need to check it at least every 2 years. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 - 139/89 mm Hg(prehypertension) get it checked at least every year or more. If your blood pressure reading is 140/90 mm Hg or higher(high blood pressure) see your doctor for proper medical advise.

Defining hypertension
Optimal blood pressure: systolic less than 120 mm Hg, diastolic less than 75 mm Hg.
Normal blood pressure: systolic 120 - 129 mm Hg, diastolic 75 - 84 mm Hg.
High normal blood pressure: systolic 130 - 139 mm Hg, diastolic 85 - 89 mm Hg.
Mild hypertension: systolic 140 - 159 mm Hg, diastolic 90 - 99 mm Hg.
Moderate hypertension: systolic 160 - 179 mm Hg, diastolic 100 - 109 mm Hg.
Severe hypertension: systolic 180 mm Hg or more, diastolic 110 mm Hg or more.
An online poll showed that most people who know their blood pressure reading have values between 90/60 - 139/89 mm Hg and this represent 62% of the respondents, 28% have values between 140/90 - 159/99 mm Hg, 6% have values between 160/100 - 179/109 mm Hg and 4% have values of 180/110 mm Hg or more.

HealthCondom Burst Is More Common Than You Think by Droleo1(op): 4:56pm On Aug 18, 2017
The use of condom is very necessary in preventing unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. However, the efficacy of this device is not 100% and the commonest cause of failure is its breakage during usage.

In my previous posts, I wrote about the common causes of condom bursts and What to do when condom bursts/breaks. Therefore, condom burst should not cause panic.

An online research showed that 35% of individuals have at least experienced a condom burst while 65% have not. From the figure it can be seen that significant number of people do experience condom burst and this a very high risk factor for unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

HealthThe Most Preferred Route Of Drug Administration by Droleo1(op): 10:16am On Aug 17, 2017
Any path through which drug is taken into the body is called the route of administration. Routes of drug administration can be classified based on:

The location where the drug is applied
Enteral: Through the gastrointestinal tract which can be oral or rectal.
parenteral: Routes other than the gastrointestinal tract(intavenous, intramuscular, intathecal, inhalation)
The site of target action
Local: The effect of the drug is targeted at a desired location.
Systemic: The drug affects the whole body system.
Several factors affect the choice of route through a drug is administered to a patient. These includes: the extent to which a drug can be absorbed from the different routes, the medical condition of the patient, the site of desired action, the effect of digestive enzymes on the drug, the physical/chemical nature of the drug.
The oral route of drug administration is very convenient and cost effective. It is also the route of administration preferred by most individuals. In an online poll, 83% of individuals preferred the oral route while just 17% preferred the parenteral route of drug administration.

HealthWhat Most People Do To Prevent Unwanted Pregnancy by Droleo1(op): 10:03am On Aug 17, 2017
Unwanted pregnancy simply means unintended or unplanned pregnancy at the time of conception. This usually results from not using any form of contraception, wrong or inconsistent use of contraception, contraceptive failure, forced sex(rape). The rate of unplanned pregnancies has been on the increase especially among teenage girls and a significant proportion of children born in recent times are products of unintended pregnancies. This has resulted in a significant increase in the number of people seeking for the voluntary termination of pregnancies(induced abortion).

Unplanned pregnancy can easily be prevented through the use of various reversible modern contraceptives as failure rate is rare when used properly. It is important to note that unplanned pregnancies is not just a problem of the singles, as there has been increase in the number of married couples seeking for induced abortion. A breast feeding woman can get pregnant from about 10 days after childbirth!

An online poll revealed that 48% of single adults use contraceptives in the prevention of unwanted pregnancy while 29% abstain from sex. About 10% use the ineffective withdrawal method with very high failure rate and 13% do nothing towards preventing unwanted pregnancy.

HealthAre You Pro-life Or Pro-choice? by Droleo1(op): 11:27pm On Aug 16, 2017
Many have argued that women should have control over their reproductive organs in the ongoing controversy surrounding the moral, religious and legal stand of induced abortion. This has resulted in the formation of movements like pro-life and pro-choice.

Pro-life refer to anti-abortion movements against the practice and legality of abortion. The advocate of pro-life argue that life begins at conception and the human embryo is a person and has right to life. There are false medical claims by some pro-life groups that abortion causes breast cancer or damages future fertility. On the other hand, pro-choice refer to movements in support of the that women should have the right to an elective abortion. Their argument is based on the fact that a woman has the right to make her personal choice as it involves her body, health and future. Also, the availability of legal abortion reduces the number of women exposed to exposed to the numerous risks associated with illegal abortions. Despite the arguments by the pro-choice movements, majority are anti-abortion.

In an online poll in which 3073 people participated, 70% were in support of the pro-life movement while just about 21% supported the pro-choice movement, 8% had no preference for either movements.

HealthContraceptive Failure Rate More Common Than Expected by Droleo1(op):
Any method or device(contraceptive) used to prevent pregnancy is called contraception. There different types of contraceptives which allow you to enjoy sex without the fear of getting pregnant. These devices have been proven to be highly efficacious over time when used in the right manner. However, contraceptive failure still remains a major cause of unintended pregnancy and most of these usually result from inconsistent or incorrect use. The expected failure rate of most contraceptive devices is very low when used perfectly, usually about 1 in 100 but this is not usually the case due to inconsistent or incorrect use.

In an online poll, 29% of women said that they have at least experienced a contraceptive failure. This figure is quite high when compared to the expected failure rate of contraceptive devices. The only way to achieve a better result with contraceptive devices is through consistent and correct use. It is also important to note that certain drugs can render contraceptive pills ineffective. Therefore, if you are to go on the pill always ask your doctor to tell you about the drugs that may reduce its efficacy.
