Not being Nigerian, I was unaware that it was commonplace to end sentences with "now." But, being eager to learn, it's something that I know about, "now." Is there a reason that sentences are frequently ended with the word "now?" Having had it pointed out to me, I'll be more aware of it, "now." And, if I do it when speaking, will I sound more like a native, "now?"

(How'd I do? grin)

Lacrissa, is this fellow somebody you actually know, or simply a cyber-friend?

If the former, then may I suggest that you actually talk with him?

If the latter, then enjoy the game of "cat and mouse." wink

@emofine:
Please forgive my failing to thank you, in a timely manner, for your translation of a previous post. Indeed, it is much appreciated, and you're very gracious to provide it for me!

In the time I've spent here, I've encountered a few delightful people who have helped me when it comes to translating the tongues of Nigeria to those with which I'm more familiar. Even though they are truly euphonious, my lack of familiarity with them leaves me unaware of what is meant by their marvelous manifestations of mellifluity.

Again, I thank you. Feel free to post in Pidgin if you wish--just remember to provide those of us who are less fortunate a translation!

Well, first of all, I hope that this is the most enjoyable birthday you've enjoyed so far, Inked_Nerd!  Happiest of thoughts and wishes!

As we're offering gifts (in a cyber sort of way), I certainly afford my respect and appreciation of your ongoing presence here as a betterment of the site.  Your postings are intelligent, pertinent and informative, yet they are witty and compassionate when they need to be--never didactic or condescending.  You don't fear addressing issues plainly, and you present your views being respectful to those of others.  This is something of a rarity--and a refreshing one at that--here on nairaland.com.

But rather than continue with the accolades that you very much deserve (and further risk being accused of unnecessarily "big grammar"), I wish to say "Thank you."  I'm certainly glad to have made your "cyber-acquaintance" and I genuinely look forward to reading many more of your insights.

Happy Birthday!

Nairaland / General / The Year 2011--what's Next? by drrionelli(m): 8:44am On Dec 27, 2010
This thread encompasses two ideas:

1. What would you like to see happen in the year 2011?

2. What do you THINK will happen in 2011 that you don't wish to?

These can be on a personal level, or they can be more broad.

Thank you for your input!

May I add to this list the word PHILTRUM?

The philtrum is the grooved area of the upper lip just beneath the nose. cheesy

I confess that I'm not linguistically gifted, so I trust that my questions will not seem to be misguided.

Yoruba is, as I understand, a fairly widely used language in Nigeria, so would it be in the best interest of the government to support its preservation? The French government has a board that, as its sole purpose, is dedicated to keeping the French language from being corrupted (or bastardized) by too much alteration from outside sources (e.g., other languages syntax and word usage). The government of Spain also has a similar watchdog group (which recently is responsible for altering the actual used alphabet of the language).

The only potential problem I can see with Nigeria's instituting something of this nature is that, as has been noted, the plethora of languages spoken and written by so many people. But, then again, a country's government must support its own cultural heritage, mustn't it?
