Science/TechnologyClimate Change: Is Nuclear Power The Answer? by dstringzz(op): 2:53am On Jan 19, 2019
Nuclear is good for the environment. Nuclear is bad for the environment. Both statements are true.

Why is it good? Nuclear power is planned to be a key part of the UK's energy mix.

The key benefit is that it helps keep the lights on while producing hardly any of the CO2 emissions that are heating the climate.

CO2 emissions come from traditional ways of creating electricity such as burning gas and coal.

And the government is expected to have halted emissions almost completely by 2050, to help curb damage to the climate.

Why is it bad for the environment?
Because major nuclear accidents are few and far between, but when they happen they create panic.

Take the Fukushima explosions in 2011, which released radioactive material into the surrounding air in Japan. Or the Chernobyl accident in 1986, which spewed radioactive material across northern Europe.

But arguably, the bigger environmental problem is what to do with nuclear waste.

This is a very live issue in the UK, where contaminated material has been held in a temporary store at the Sellafield site in Cumbria.

The government has been trying for years to secure a site with the right geology, offering cash sweeteners to local communities to host a permanent £12bn underground store for the most dangerous waste. So far no permanent dump has been agreed - that is after 70 years of nuclear power in the UK.

Can we get by without new nuclear?
"The UK policy identifying the need for nuclear to play a role alongside renewables has been supported by numerous independent studies," said a spokesperson for EDF, which is building the Hinkley C nuclear power plant.

"Nuclear provides low-carbon electricity when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine."

Previously civil servants estimated that future UK electricity supplies would be divided up roughly 30/30/30 between nuclear, wind and fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage (CCS).

But no-one has been willing to invest at scale in the expensive CCS technology, which pumps CO2 emissions into rocks.

Wind is ready to take its place in the sun. But with old nuclear stations closing, nuclear won't be able to fulfil its third of the deal unless new nuclear plants are built.

The issue has caused a bitter divide between environmentalists, with some arguing that the risk from climate change is so severe that it's worth supping nuclear fuel, albeit with a long spoon.

Others argue that the technology is dead and that renewables and other options can supply the UK's needs without the danger of nuclear accidents and waste.

Prof Jim Watson, director of the UK Energy Research Centre, told BBC News: "Most analysts now have accepted that we don't need 30% of energy from nuclear - renewables can take a substantially bigger share.

"But taking any option off the table makes the job of meeting essential carbon targets even harder. It would certainly be hard to do without nuclear altogether."

What are the alternatives?
The people who keep our lights on are looking to find ways of extending the life of existing nuclear plants, and trying to get nuclear power more cheaply.

Factory-built small modular reactors that can be delivered on the back of a lorry are touted as one solution - but they are not expected to be operating at any scale until well into the 2030s. And what's more, with nuclear, bigger is generally better.

Meanwhile, other options are being urgently explored. We need the power market to be more flexible. We need to develop better batteries and other techniques for storing power.

And we need systems that will reduce the demand for electricity at peak times and transfer the demand to off-peak times when wind energy is plentiful and cheap.

One particularly hard task is to find ways of storing power between months and even seasons.

Last but by no means least, the government needs to prompt people to insulate their homes to reduce the demand for energy in the first place.

The news that Hitachi is suspending work on a nuclear plant in north Wales has made all these tasks more urgent.

Science/TechnologyTwitter Warns That Private Tweets Were Public For Years by dstringzz(op): 10:42pm On Jan 18, 2019
Private tweets sent by users of Twitter's Android app could have been exposed publicly for years.

Twitter said it had discovered a security flaw which meant "protected" tweets became public when some changes were made to accounts.

Anyone who updated the email address linked to their account between November 2014 and January 2019 could have had messages exposed, it said.

Twitter said it had started to let affected users know about the bug.

It added that it had turned the protections back on for Android users who had inadvertently switched them off.

Twitter said it was also issuing a public notice about the error because it could not confirm the exact number of accounts that had been affected and wanted to reach those it could not identify by an internal investigation.

"We're very sorry this happened and we're conducting a full review to help prevent this from happening again," it said.

It encouraged users to check their privacy settings to make sure they reflected their preferences.

Twitter said it fixed the flaw on 14 January and would share more information if it became available.

Anyone who used Twitter via an Apple device or through the web would not have been caught out by the bug.

PoliticsBrexit: High-profile Germans Plead With UK To Stay In EU by dstringzz(op): 10:36pm On Jan 18, 2019
Leading German figures have written to the UK asking it to stay in the EU.

The letter, published in the Times, is signed by 31 people, including the leader of the Christian Democratic Union - and likely successor to Angela Merkel - Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

They cited post-work pints and pantomime as beloved British habits.

But the UK's role in post-war Europe is the focus of the signatories calling for Britain to stay.

"Without your great nation, this Continent would not be what it is today," they wrote.

The letter - also signed by the chief executive of Airbus, Thomas Enders, and punk singer Campino - said the UK had helped define the European Union as a community of "freedom and prosperity".

"After the horrors of the Second World War, Britain did not give up on us," it continued.

"It has welcomed Germany back as a sovereign nation and a European power.

"This we, as Germans, have not forgotten and we are grateful."

The signatories said that they "respect the choice" of British people who want to leave the EU and, if the country wants to leave for good, "it will always have friends in Germany and Europe".

But they said the choice was not irreversible and "our door will always remain open".

'Friends across the Channel'
The letter concluded: "Britain has become part of who we are as Europeans and therefore we would miss Britain.

"We would miss the legendary British black humour and going to the pub after work hours to drink an ale. We would miss tea with milk and driving on the left-hand side of the road. And we would miss seeing the panto at Christmas.

"But more than anything else, we would miss the British people - our friends across the Channel.

"Therefore Britons should know, from the bottom of our hearts, we want them to stay."

Brexit: France activates no-deal plan
France will spend millions of euros preparing ports and airports for a no-deal Brexit
French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has said a no-deal Brexit looks "less and less unlikely" and has launched a contingency plan to prepare for it.

After the UK Parliament rejected the withdrawal agreement, Mr Philippe said laws had to be passed and millions invested in French ports and airports.

An EU official will now visit all 27 capitals to co-ordinate no-deal plans.

EU countries with close UK ties have already begun preparing for its departure on 29 March without a deal.

"We are taking this very seriously now as the possibility of a no-deal Brexit is becoming more possible after Tuesday night," said European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas. "This is work which is ongoing and it's developing fully. We are not taking any chances."

Cristiano Ronaldo: Las Vegas police request DNA sample following rape allegations

11 Jan

Police in Las Vegas have issued a warrant for a DNA sample from Cristiano Ronaldo as part of their investigation into the rape allegations made against the Juventus forward.

The 33-year-old's lawyer, Peter S. Christiansen, told BBC Sport it was a "very standard request".

The Wall Street Journal says the warrant was recently sent to the court system in Italy.

Ronaldo denies assaulting Kathryn Mayorga at a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.

"Mr Ronaldo has always maintained, as he does today, that what occurred in Las Vegas in 2009 was consensual in nature, so it is not surprising that DNA would be present, nor that the police would make this very standard request as part of their investigation," said Christiansen's statement.

German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel, which first published the story about the allegation in October, said Ms Mayorga filed a report with Las Vegas police shortly after the alleged incident.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it was "taking the same steps in this case as in any other sexual assault to facilitate the collection of DNA evidence".

The LVMPD added: "We can confirm that an official request has been submitted to Italian authorities.

"Due to this being an ongoing investigation, we have no additional information or comment on this case at this time."

Der Spiegel said that in 2010, she reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo involving a $375,000 (£288,000) payment for agreeing never to go public with the allegations.

Her lawyers are now seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement void.

Ronaldo's lawyer has previously said his client does not deny entering an agreement but that "the reasons that led him to do so are at least to be distorted".

He added: "This agreement is by no means a confession of guilt."

Ms Mayorga was inspired to speak out by the #MeToo movement, her lawyer has said, and is suing Ronaldo in a lawsuit in the United States.

Ronaldo moved to Juventus from Real Madrid for £99.2m in July. He has won the Ballon d'Or - awarded to the world's best footballer - in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

The Portuguese international has previously dismissed the allegation as "fake news" and earlier in October issued a statement through his Twitter account in which he "firmly" denied the accusation.

His lawyers claim documents used in Der Spiegel's investigation have been "completely fabricated" but the publication says it has "no reason" to doubt the authenticity of key documents used in its story.

South Africa sniffer dog intercepts 116kg of rhino horn
11 January 2019
South African authorities have seized 116kg (256 lbs) of illegal rhino horn being smuggled out of the country.

The haul of 36 horns and horn fragments, worth about $1.3m (£1m), is believed to be one of the biggest seized in the country in recent years.

Customs officials at OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg say it was sniffed out by Lizzy, a detector dog.

The horns were found tightly packed inside boxes, along with everyday items such as decorations and doormats.

The eight boxes were already ready to be shipped to Dubai, the South African Revenue Service (Sars) said in a statement.

Despite concerted efforts to fight it, poaching is still a persistent issue in South Africa. Between 2007 and 2014, rhino poaching rose by about 9,000%.

Conservation groups say the number of rhinos killed has been gradually decreasing since 2014, but more than 1,000 rhinos continue to be killed in the country every year.

To get horns out of the country, and often on to lucrative markets in Asia, poachers usually smuggle them out one by one, or break them down into smaller blocks and pellets.

Sometimes the horn is ground down into a powder, so that it can be used in traditional medicines in China and Vietnam.

Sars says dogs like Lizzy - who discovered the latest shipment - are part of a nationwide initiative to fight smuggling.

I'm not your usual critic, but this guy seems to have gotten lost in the euphoria of dating a billionaire's daughter. Fine, it's cool and they're in love, but ambition seems to be absent in this guy's dictionary. When new acts like Mayorkun and Ycee are busy dropping hits and climbing up the ladder to becoming tier 2 and eventually tier 1 artistes, this guy is busy enjoying his comfort zone.

Well, I hope he's got a solid back up plan, just in case the relationship goes south... just saying.
So,because someone posted a photo with is girlfriend means he is not working on ambitious. Chill out bro
