PoliticsOndo PDP Primary: Two Men Caught With Thumb-printed Ballot Papers by dsweetest(op): 5:22pm On Jul 22, 2020
Two men have been caught at the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election with ballot papers already thumb-marked for Agboola Ajayi, one of the aspirants and deputy governor of the state.
We gathered that one of the men caught is s a chieftain of the party in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The spokesperson of the party, Zadok Akintoye, confirmed the development but said they were caught outside the election venue.

“Yes, it happened but not inside the hall where the election is taking place. Election is currently going on smoothly and aspirants have been told to warn their supporters against coming close to the election venue,” he told us

He also said he has no idea of the number of the ballot papers that the men were caught with and that all aspirants have dissociated themselves from the already thumb-marked papers.

When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to Mr Ajayi, Tope Okeowo, told us that the men were caught with “specimen”.

“They were seen with specimens with agents to educate delegates,” Mr Okeowo said, adding that the development is just “propaganda against his principal.”

The state police spokesperson, Tee Leo-Ikoro, said he is yet to be briefed about the development.

There are eight contenders for the governorship ticket. They are Mr Ajayi, Eyitayo Jegede, Boluwaji Kunlere, Eddy Olafeso, Ben Okunomo, Bode Ayorinde, Godday Erewa and Sola Ebiseeni.

PoliticsMagu: Malami Frustrated Extradition Of Diezani, Other Fugitives by dsweetest(op): 11:34am On Jul 21, 2020
Embattled acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has responded to allegations that he frustrated the extradition of a former minister of petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke and other fugitives to face trial in Nigeria.

Rejecting the allegation, Mr Magu has now told a presidential probe panel investigating allegations of corruption against him that it was his accuser, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, who was actually frustrating the extradition of the fugitives.

In the reports, which was originally published by the News Agency of Nigeria and republished by several newspapers, Mr Magu was accused of refusing to cooperate with crime-fighting authorities in the United Kingdom to facilitate the return of Mrs Alison-Madueke to face corruption charges in Nigeria.

The report also claimed that Mr Magu has refused to provide documentary evidence that would make the office of the Attorney General of the Federation commence the process of extraditing Mrs Alison-Maduake.

However, in Mr Magu’s response to the presidential probe panel obtained by us, he denied refusing to share information with the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the United Kingdom.

“The NCA still shares critical information with the Commission and conducts joint operations with the Commission under the Combined Inter-Agency Task Force (CIATF) and also directly. Classified documents in this regard can be produced for sighting on request and with the consent of the NCA. The Commission is also jointly working with the NCA on several cases including the Diezani Allison-Madueke cases and all the Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) requests on these cases are passed to the NCA and the Crown Prosecution Services through the Centra Authority Unit (CAD) of the Ministry of Justice contrary to the allegations of the HAGF,” Mr Magu wrote.

He added that following the delay by UK authorities to charge Mrs Alison-Madueke, the EFCC wrote to the authorities in the country through the AGF requesting the extradition of the former petroleum minister so she can face pending charges in Nigeria.

He added that Mr Malami has yet to communicate with the commission the position of UK authorities on the request it made.

Contrary to the claim made against him by Mr Malami, Mr Magu told the probe panel that under his leadership, “the EFCC maintained a good working relationship with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation which recently acknowledged this relationship by commending the Commission publicly and on record.”

He added that apart from the request for the extradition of Mrs Alison-Madueke, the EFCC has made several requests through the AGF for the extradition of high profile Nigerian fugitives and that Mr Malami has yet to respond to any of the requests.

“Some of these fugitives include Robert John Oshodin who laundered millions of United States Dollars on behalf of former National Security Adviser (NSA) Colonel Sambo Dasuki (Rtd), former Special to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme Mr Kingsley Kuku and Hima Aboubakar who was criminally indicted by the investigation of arms procurement conducted under the former NSA Colonel Sambo Dasuki (Rtd). Attached and marked as Annexure 32 (a)-(e) are copies of the extradition requests of these fugitives.

“The Commission also forwarded a Mutual Legal Assistance request to the HAGF for onward transmission to the authorities of the British Virgin Island through a letter dated 9th September, 2019 wherein the Commission requested for critical information in respect of the P&ID case but the Commission is yet to receive any response from the office of the HAGF,” Mr Magu wrote.

Mr Malami did not respond to calls made to him Tuesday morning seeking his comments for this story.

Last week, Mr. Malami announced Mr Magu’s suspension following President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval. Prior to his suspension he was arrested and brought before the probe panel headed by Ayo Salami, a former president of the Court of Appeal.

Mr Magu is currently being investigated by a panel headed by Ayo Salami, former president of the Court of Appeal, over allegations of corruption and insubordination levelled against him by Mr Malami.

After his arrest, allegations that Mr Magu diverted billions of naira gotten from recovered funds, as well as the interests accrued from the funds, were circulated and published on various media platforms. He rejected the charges saying all recovered assets are intact and can be accounted for.

CrimeUS Lawyer, Pissetzky Disputes Court Record, Says He Remains Hushpuppi’s Attorney by dsweetest(op): 12:29pm On Jul 20, 2020
Against court records, Gal Pissetzky, the top Chicago lawyer hired to defend Ramon Abbas, who is facing wired fraud charges in the United States, has insisted that he remains his attorney in Los Angeles.

It was earlier reported that Mr Abbas, popularly addressed as Hushpuppi, had settled for a government lawyer after his case has been transfered to another district on Wednesday.

Court records showed that Mr Abbas’s case has been transferred to the Central District of California for prosecution.

Moreover, in the commitment letter sent to California, Mr Abbas refused to retain Mr Pissetzky as his attorney. Rather, he requested that a court-appointed counsel be assigned to him.

Reacting to Our report, Mr Pitsetssky said the court order obtained by this paper is not correct even when a signed copy was sent to him.

“I am still and will continue to represent Mr. Abbas in California,” he said in response to enquiries sent to him.

Commenting on the decision contained in the court order, Mr Pitsetssky stated that the choice was not made by his client.

“The reason the court Order states that he wishes to have an appointed lawyer is because it is usual practice to mark this box.No one asked Mr. Abbas what box to mark, and it was automatically marked. I am Mr. Abbas lawyer. He will not have a court appointed lawyer.”

This paper cannot verify Mr Pissetzky’s claims from the defendant because he is currently in prison.

TravelOver 370 Nigerians Asked To Leave U.S. ‘for Breaking Laws’ by dsweetest(op): 2:49pm On Jul 17, 2020
More than 370 Nigerians were ordered to leave the United States this year, after being found guilty of breaking immigration laws and other crimes, data from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shows.

Data obtained from the ICE and compiled in a June report by a global tracking website on government policy, TRAC, says 376 Nigerians, who mainly resided in Texas, New Jersey, California, New York and others, were served court orders to leave the U.S. between January and June, having been convicted of immigration and criminal charges.

TRAC is a U.S.-based tracking website that keeps databases of immigration, FBI cases and firearms data for public access.

The data referenced in this story was obtained by TRAC and sourced directly from the ICE through FOI requests.

This comes even as the scramble to flatten the spread of COVID-19 continues with the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policy on immigrants.

Trend

About 3,019 Nigerians were deported from the U.S for criminal convictions in 15 years, starting from ICE’s establishment in 2003 and ending in 2018, a Life and Times analysis revealed.

But within the first half of this year, 335 Nigerians violated immigration laws including unlawful entry into the country, overstayed visas, fake documents and many others.

About 41 other Nigerians have criminal records of aggravated felonies such as fraud, drug crimes, sex and firearms offences.

Over time, ‘criminal aliens’ often top the list of priorities when it comes to deportation from the U.S.

This was laid bare more during the Trump administration as the American president vowed to “chase people with criminal records away from our country.”

Court proceedings

Once a foreign national is arrested for an offence by the Department of Homeland Security, they are tried before an immigration judge, which is often a lengthy legal process. The individual is most often flagged for deportation. Therefore, a deportation case is filed.

Deportation proceedings are conducted to determine whether the individual charged with violating immigration laws should be removed from the U.S. By removal, it means deportation.

During the proceedings, the individual could appeal the case and the term could be lessened to a voluntary departure but this does not provide for alternate erasure of criminal records.

The individual could be allowed to remain in the country if the judge finds the charges against him or her are not sustained or the government requests that the charges be dropped, as well as where the judge finds the other provisions in the immigration law entitles the individual “relief” from removal.

Between January and June this year, 2,700 deportation cases involving Nigerians were filed with immigration and criminal charges; the outcome of the court proceedings showed that 376 Nigerians were ordered deported.

Nigeria fell behind Cameroon which had the highest figure among the African countries – 647 – and was ahead of Democratic Republic of Congo and Ghana which had 229 and 175 deportees respectively.

Concerns

But there are concerns by human rights activists that the U.S. may be brewing another crisis over the rights of the planned deportees who are reportedly kept in detention facilities across the country.

The 376 people are among the 901 Nigerians being held in detention facilities across the U.S., according to the 2019 report by ICE. No report of extradition of these deportees has been made yet.

However, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the Human Rights Watch had urged the ICE to halt involuntary transfers of foreign nationals between facilities, and put in place policies at detention centres “that would allow safe social distancing and effective hygiene for as long as detainees remain in custody”.

“The U.S. government should not force deportees to travel so long as it puts them and their communities at heightened risk of COVID-19,” the Human Rights Watch said.

“Despite outbreaks of COVID-19 in U.S., immigration detention centres and government travel restrictions the world over, the U.S. has continued deportations with little regard for the consequences,” the US program director at Human Rights Watch, Nicole Austin-Hillery, said.

“With these reckless deportations, the Trump administration is contributing to the spread of COVID-19 and endangering public health globally.

PoliticsBREAKING: Armed Security Men Storm The Home Of Joi Nunieh In Port Harcourt by dsweetest(op): 10:53am On Jul 16, 2020
Joy Nunieh, former Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, was on Thursday blocked by 30 armed policemen from leaving her house in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for the airport.

LifeandTimes news gathered Nunieh was due to appear before Senate committee on NDDC in Abuja this morning.

"Nunieh just called me now. The police have taken over her house since 4:00am in Port Harcourt. She is expected to testify before the House of Reps today. With a noticeable distress in her voice, she alleged the police broke into her premises and she expected they would take her away soon," a source close to her told us

Twitter

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, and Nunieh had last week appeared before a Senate ad hoc panel investigating the alleged mismanagement of N40bn by the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC.

At the hearing, Akpabio said he did not know the expenditure of the NDDC under Nunieh because she refused to give him briefings.

But Nunieh, who made damning allegations against Akpabio, said the minister engineered her removal for failing to dance to his tunes.

She alleged that Akpabio asked her to change the dollars in the NDDC account; sack the head of the legal team, who is from the North; remove all directors, who refused to follow his instructions and also implicate Peter Nwaoboshi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC.

According to Nunieh, Akpabio warned that if she did not follow his instructions, she would be removed.

PoliticsNigeria And The Struggle For Qualitative Leadership - By Ike Agbatekwe by dsweetest(op): 7:30pm On Jul 15, 2020
For over two decades, I have watched with justifiable disdain- the political situation in our native Nigeria. Beginning with the new democratic dispensation that started in 1999 and the events preceding to the new era which was borne out of a selfless and humble struggle by well-meaning Nigerians across all tribal divides.

It was a unified call by all  Nigerians for a real change against the monstrous tyranny and the dictatorship of General Sanni Abacha. I had just returned back from the United States after a protracted absence - it was indeed a new dawn and apparent divine intervention.

The urge for a democratic government was based on the belief that it will pave a way for economic, political, and social change which will foster development in our developing country. But that will be very far from the truth of what is transpiring in our polity today from all reasonable assessment.

It will also be an error of judgment for me to single out any one of our previous leaders other than the one already mentioned, for the failed system that we have been construed to live in today. I however have a strong belief and conviction that the civilian government that we have inherited for two decades, has not augured well for the average Nigerian who represents the core segment of the population.

The glimmer of hope that the citizens harbored for salvation from a democratic government has been dashed by a successive bunch of greedy charlatans, whose primary interests are short of realistic ideas for development and welfare for the people that they represent.

The present situation that we find ourselves in Nigeria today has raised a consistent question; about whether our political leaders have the fortitude to look beyond their own shortsighted self-interest and begin to address real economic and social problems that have captivated our country for six decades despite our vast resources.

The problems are so self-evident that we should begin by addressing those that threaten our core values; political pluralism, broad-based economic opportunities as opposed to one monopolized by oligarchs, cultural and religious tolerance as well security secured by means other than a gun.

For Nigeria, which ranks 146th in the 180 countries in Transparency International's Corruption Index in 2019, to assume here deserved place in the community of nations, there is need for a realistic national dialogue, which should center around value and proportion, greed and appropriate reward as well as the role of government in the marketplace.

TravelDiversity Visa Lottery Winners Sue Trump For Visa Ban by dsweetest(op): 1:39pm On Jul 15, 2020
More than 200 would-be immigrants from about 70 countries who were winners in the U.S. government’s Diversity Visa lottery programme and relatives have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the president’s recent executive order suspending immigration until next year.

“The plaintiffs in the case followed the rules and did everything they were supposed to do.

”They had planned to build a new life in the United States of America,” the lawyer Curtis Lee Morrison, based in Los Angeles, told el Nuevo Herald.

The federal lawsuit was filed in the District of Columbia and claims that the Trump administration has repeatedly attacked the Diversity Visa programme, created by Congress in 1990 with the purpose of facilitating immigration from countries that are underrepresented in the demographics of the U.S.

The executive order, enacted in June, prevents the winners of the Diversity Visa Giveaway, just over 50,000 people, from completing the process of their immigrant visa application.

The State Department has said it will not make an exception for immigrants, who must complete their application before the end of September.

Trump has said the order seeks to protect the U.S. job market at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has triggered unemployment and an economic recession is feared.

But the lawyers and almost 500 plaintiffs – including the visa winners and relatives – disagree.

PoliticsBREAKING: Diversity Visa Lottery Winners Sue Trump For Visa Ban by dsweetest(op): 12:10pm On Jul 15, 2020

Trump has said the order seeks to protect the U.S. job market at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has triggered unemployment and an economic recession is feared.

But the lawyers and almost 500 plaintiffs – including the visa winners and relatives – disagree.

The executive order also affects the family claims of permanent residents in the U.S. Thousands of them have joined in a petition to revoke the measure on the We the People platform, hosted on the White House site.

The countries with the highest representation among the winners of the Diversity Lottery in 2020 are Cuba and Venezuela, with 2,703 and 1,068 visas, respectively.

The plaintiffs include family members from both communities, as well as from distant countries such as Egypt, Ukraine, Qatar, and Lithuania, among others.

Morrison said that in November 2017, the Trump administration asked Congress to cancel the visa lottery program. Failing to reach a bipartisan agreement, the White House renewed its request in 2018, and when Congress rejected it, the administration “took a series of executive measures in 2020 to sabotage,” he said.

As of May 2020, only two immigrant visas had been processed, the lawyer said.

The immigration ban until the new year directly impacts tens of thousands of people who had won the raffle in 2019.

“Our dream was always to go to the United States to meet our family there and work to fulfill our dreams as professionals,” said Katia Elena Casanova from Cuba, an industrial chemist who, along with her husband, won the lottery.

“My husband has always believed in the power of the Law of Attraction.

”We never doubted that we would win that raffle, but our hearts fell when President Trump signed the new decree,” she said.

PoliticsCOVID19: UK Economy Records Sharpest Decline In 300 Years, Boris Johnson rattled by dsweetest(op): 4:26pm On Jul 14, 2020
Britain’s coronavirus-ravaged economy slumped almost one-fifth during the country’s lockdown and remained set for its sharpest decline in annual output for 300 years, official data showed Tuesday.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said gross domestic product plunged 19.1 percent in the three months to the end of May “as government restrictions on movement dramatically reduced economic activity”.

The Office for Budget Responsibility, in charge of the government’s economic forecasts, said the “UK is on track to record the largest decline in annual GDP for 300 years”, estimating that the economy could shrink by as much as 14.3 percent in 2020.

The Bank of England had already forecast that the UK economy could have its sharpest annual contraction in centuries.

GDP output grew 1.8 percent in May from April as the government began to ease restrictions, particularly boosting construction and manufacturing.

May’s data “is a disappointing first step on the road to recovery and suggests that hopes of a rapid rebound from the lockdown are wide of the mark”, noted Capital Economics analyst Thomas Pugh.

“Indeed, the path to full economic recovery will probably be much longer than most people anticipate.”

Just three months after the Conservatives won a large majority in last December’s election, the pandemic derailed their plans for overhauling the U.K. economy to “level up” forgotten regions of the country.

It forced Johnson instead to commit hundreds of billions of pounds to rescue private companies and pay workers’ wages. These big state, big spending interventions alarmed free marketeers in the party and threw Johnson’s tribe into a full-scale identity crisis.

On tuesday June 30th 2020, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave his response: the Conservative Party isn’t in crisis, it is changing for good.

The traditional Tory instinct to balance the nation’s books is now not the priority and state spending will continue to flow. “We will not be responding to this crisis with what people called austerity,” Johnson said. “We are not going to try to cheese-pare our way out of trouble.”

But will this strategy work? With this latest news from the Office for National Statistics, this remains to be seen.

PoliticsBreaking: First Ever COVID-19 Vaccine Produced, To Be Released By Russia by dsweetest(op): 1:09pm On Jul 13, 2020
Russia on Monday said it was preparing to supply its coronavirus vaccine to the global market, with its military reporting that tests among volunteer soldiers have been successful.

According to the Russian military’s Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star) Newspaper reported that there were no complications or side effects observed.

Russia plans to finish the clinical trials by the end of July.

Earlier, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko, said that Russia was preparing to sell such vaccines and other relevant medical supplies on a global level.

“Russia is ready to supply to the global market the means of direct anti-viral action, including medication for cytokine storm therapy, test systems and vaccines,” Murashko said.

Russia has been racing to develop a vaccine and improve treatments for the virus in recent months as its caseload surged to the world’s third highest, behind the U.S. and Brazil.

Russia has reported more than 640,000 cases of the novel coronavirus, with more than 9,000 deaths directly linked to the virus. Read more below.

TV/MoviesRe: Daniel Craig Is An Insult To The James Bond Persona by dsweetest(m): 9:47am On Feb 19, 2020
Daniel Craig is hands down the worst Bond ever.

Bond is charm, screen presence, charisma and smoothness. That's Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, Sean Connery.

Daniel is like a retired Army dude.

David Oyelewo, Idris Elba, Chris Helmsworth, the list of the actors that can play it better is long.

By the way, Skyfall is the worst James Bond flick I ever saw. James Bond is about charm, smoothness and unbelievable gadgets, not about gritty action.

If you want to get into an ivy league college, You need to be among the top 75th percentiles. (SAT score of at least 1500+ with Essay 18/24.) That your Waec result is below 3.5.
The average GPA at Stanford is 3.94.

and More reliance Is placed on Test scores and GPA, extra-curricular activities too.
they want the brightest.
in every 100 applicant, only 5 are admitted.
Best wishes!
Thanks for your reply @Futuragetty

Thanks so much.

So...

The lower the age the better?

RealTrump:
What's your age?
What's your SAT scores?
But importantly, what's your story? Your SOP is your number 1 deciding factor. Stanford is never short of quality applicants, only your story can set u apart, not test scores...from what I gathered.

Also, don't bank on your EE upper credit. Ivy league applicants are known to have taken quite some college level courses even as high school students. So your ND, is not a big deal.

If u can tell them about how u used to trek 12 miles to and from school everyday even with your torn sandals. How with your EE knowledge, u have been able to dam your village river and provide electricity and water. How u are the captain of your village football team n beat all other team in your local government. Things like this.

...u might just get in based on emotional sentiments.

You can apply to ALL ivy league schools, but make sure u apply to easier targets too.

Getting to an IVY league university will depend on ur academic profile (GPA and SAT) and other extra curricular achievement
But my advise for u is that as u are looking at IVY be looking at dafe school also
Okay. Thanks. I don't quite understand what you mean by ''dafe'' school though.

Also, does GPA mean the number WES would give me after evaluating my WAEC result?
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by dsweetest(m): 2:19pm On Jan 09, 2020
Hello all. Thanks a lot for this thread.

How do you guys see someone getting into an IVY League school like Stanford. I am currently working on writing my SAT. I have 4 A's and 3 C's from my WAEC result. I attended Auchi Polytechnic with an Upper Credit in E/E Eng, though I don't know if I need to use that. I have been involved in biz ever since I left school.

I am currently submitting my WAEC result to WES for evaluation.

What should be my next step?

Also, does anyone have any idea about the fees?

Thanks a lot.
